Product Details:
*first place winner of the society of environmental journalists' rachel carson environment book award* from a former new york times science writer, this urgent call to action–updated for paperback with a new preface and afterword–will empower you to stand up to climate change and environmental pollution by making simple but impactful everyday choices. with urgency and wit, tatiana schlossberg explains that far from being only a distant problem of the natural world created by the fossil fuel industry, climate change is all around us, all the time, lurking everywhere in our convenience-driven society, all without our realizing it. by examining the unseen and unconscious environmental impacts in four areas-the internet and technology, food, fashion, and fuel – schlossberg helps readers better understand why climate change is such a complicated issue, and how it connects all of us: how streaming a movie on netflix in new york burns coal in virginia; how eating a hamburger in california might contribute to pollution in the gulf of mexico; how buying an inexpensive cashmere sweater in chicago expands the mongolian desert; how destroying forests from north carolina is necessary to generate electricity in england. cataloging the complexities and frustrations of our carbon-intensive society with a dry sense of humor, schlossberg makes the climate crisis and its solutions interesting and relevant to everyone who cares, even a little, about the planet. she empowers readers to think about their stuff and the environment in a new way, helping them make more informed choices when it comes to the future of our world.

6. The Skeptical Environmentalist: Measuring The Real State Of The World [Book]
Product Details:
Bjørn lomborg, a former member of greenpeace, challenges widely held beliefs that the world environmental situation is getting worse and worse in his new book, the skeptical environmentalist. using statistical information from internationally recognized research institutes, lomborg systematically examines a range of major environmental issues that feature prominently in headline news around the world, including pollution, biodiversity, fear of chemicals, and the greenhouse effect, and documents that the world has actually improved. he supports his arguments with over 2500 footnotes, allowing readers to check his sources. concluding that there are more reasons for optimism than pessimism, he stresses the need for clear-headed prioritization of resources to tackle real, not imagined, problems. the skeptical environmentalist offers readers a non-partisan evaluation that serves as a useful corrective to the more alarmist accounts favored by campaign groups and the media. bjørn lomborg is an associate professor of statistics in the department of political science at the university of aarhus. when he started to investigate the statistics behind the current gloomy view of the environment, he was genuinely surprised. he published four lengthy articles in the leading danish newspaper, including statistics documenting an ever-improving world, and unleashed the biggest post-war debate with more than 400 articles in all the major papers. since then, lomborg has been a frequent participant in the european debate on environmentalism on television, radio, and in newspapers.

Reviews:
I bought this book because I am tired of the propaganda that the main stream media bombards us with on a regular basis regarding enviromental issues. I knew how I felt, but wanted to learn more about the enviroment from an expert. This book does provide me with the information I was looking for, but I must admit that it is a "hard" read for me, very much like a text book, but I am finding it interesting and enlightening and hope to actually finish it at some pont.uk_fanatic
Some of these environmental questions are: How bad are things truly? What should we do about the problems? This book is an assessment of environmental concerns such as overpopulation and global warming. First in each topic it outlines the common concerns, then there is an analysis from all available data of the actual state of things and what we can realistically do, along with a sort of cost-benefit analysis. which sets a rationale for any action and ranks them as to effectiveness and thus desirability. Some "solutions" therefore, do not solve a problem and are a tremendous waste of resources (money, usually) that are needed or better used somewhere else. Sometimes the most wasteful solution is the one most often pushed forward, while more logical and effective ones are rejected. An example is the dire prediction of world starvation due to overpopulation. Actually global population is stabilizing and has begun to plateau for some time. And there are fewer people starving (despite headlines showcasing famines) across the globe than ever. The populations naturally stop increasing where health and other concerns are not an issue, thus clean water reduces infant mortality and fewer births can follow. As to global warming, this is the largest part of the book, and possibly where most of the attacks against the author arise–from the committed partisans to climate change philosophy. At any rate, it is an open-minded look–no pre-judged or forced outcomes, just a look at the data and a journey to where the facts lead.mickeycz
I like the honest approach of the author.tonyashenden
