Probably the most important series of books I read as a child- the ideas and feeling I experienced while reading them have stayed with me into adulthood. The feeling of being able to create a world that seemed to make much more sense than the one we inhabit fueled my desire to become a writer, which I am happy to report is a career that I am following today! The books are fantastic for children, as they do not spoon feed ideas, but encourages them to think for themselves. If I ever have children, they will certainly have these books to read. There has been controversy over these books- the churches have said that Pullman is teaching kids to be anti religious. I don't believe this to be the case, but people will of course read whatever they want into them, same as how Bill & Ben the Flowerpot Men were labeled as gay & Harry Potter was "encouraging occult practices". Whatever the case, I only hope that this does not prevent any young people from reading Philip Pullman's fantastic works. Rather than being preaching anything, I find them to be supportive of individual thought & considering everything from different viewpoints. And surely, we want to encourage the next generation to do just that, as well as fostering a love of literacy.
I bought this set because I didn’t want one that had printed in red that it was an HBO series and this image doesn’t show that it had it. Turns out this one has it, see my pics. I loved this book. It took me a bit to finally start reading but once I did, I could not put it down. I was a Greco/Roman history major and this book was right up my alley. I love how she sprinkled in some of the other mythologies, such as Prometheus, to really build the story. I tried to read this when I first got it but I just couldn't get into it. Well this time I made sure to really let myself fall into the imagery of this story and I have fallen in love, I cannot put this done! All day at work I'm excited to get home to read and for me that says something because it takes a great book to really steal my obsession. This novel was absolutely beautiful. As a Madeline Miller fan from the Song of Achilles days, I had high expectations for this book, which were absolutely met! You are dragged along with Circe to experience her world and her life; all the good, bad, and ugly that entails. The emotion in this story is so real, and can make it difficult to read at times, especially when feeling alongside her, the graphic nature of the violence that is committed against our MC. (Content warning for people with a history of sexual assault, please be aware that this book does have a scene later in the novel that portrays an assault quite accurately, and can be distressing to read). The tragic tale of Circe that has been reimagined by Miller is absolutely another hit, I can't wait to reread this after all my friends have borrowed it.Charlie

I love this book because reading about the places, events, groups, etc. fires my imagination and gives me ideas for creating my own campaigns, adventures, and stories. The book is mostly that. 40 pages of places, history, gods and their portfolios. 60 pages of more detailed places. 20 pages of how all the races fit into the world, 25 more pages of class options, 10 pages of backgrounds. So for players, there's 35 pages of extra options. No new magic items, only a few cantrips to fit the new class options. No monsters or familiars. The characters were great, and it was easy to pull for them. And the plot moved along well, leading to a climax that kept me turning pages.

These can be used to help ease younglings into the world of D&D. They explain *some* things in language that's a little easier for kids to get into. My son is 4 and he's way too young for this, but he *loves* looking at the pictures and I explain things to him or paraphrase the text. The big HOWEVER is that these books are of limited usefulness by themselves. Someone will have to have the normal 5th edition rule books if you want to run an adventure with your kids. This book hooked from the first page. I told my husband that the writing reminded me of the Princess Bride (the book) with its footnotes and humor. That was just the first page. As the book progressed, I knew it was one that needed to be read to my kids. My two older boys (tweens) had already read Narnia and Lord of the Rings. I knew they'd love this, too. And they did. Passionately. This book and the 4-book Saga as a whole, are in my personal top 5 books/series of all time. In fact, both my husband and I stole the book from the "read aloud" area so we could devour it faster. I bought this book in the hopes that my middle school reader would enjoy them. To say he did is a gross understatement. In fact as soon as he read them he told me I NEEDED to read them too. I flew through this book (and the others) because I could not put them down. These stories remind me of C.S. Lewis and Tolkien – fun, inspirational and imaginative! I am now reading through this book again with my daughter and we are both hooked!! My father in law overheard a chapter and when I put it down he said, "you aren't going to keep going?" That is a sure sign of a good book!! The characters are absolutely amazing and each teach so many different lessons through their own experiences. I hadn't heard of these books before a couple months ago, and I am so glad to know them now! I can't get over the detailed description in these books that bring them to life and makes you feel like you are smack in the middle of a dark alley fending off black, lizard-looking, poisonous fang dripping Fang! Lyrics to songs being sung by a young girl and the events surrounding them left a lump in my throat. And the picture of being homesick while being at home was overwhelming to me. I have rarely come across a book that left my kids and I imagining a character to be the same in all our heads, and the description of Podo has us all assuming he is Mr. Edward's with a tat! Haha We read a chapter every morning at breakfast and it's hard to put it down and get to school. I just cannot recommend this enough!Rachel

And sometimes going many pages with nothing or just one small single colored item on a page. With as long as it took for this book to come out, I was expecting better. This module promised a lot of things it doesn't live up to. It's really all over the place. Quite a steep price for something that requires dozens of hours of prep and fixing before you can run it. This alternate cover of the Mythic Odysseys of Theros is stunning to say the least. I have collected all the alternate cover Dungeons & Dragons books released so far but this one is by far the best. The content is top notch and includes everything needed to set your adventures in a mythic Greek style campaign setting. This is, top to bottom, one of the best D&D books I've bought. At a basic level the quality of the physical book is higher than what's standard for these sorts of products, especially the paper quality. That might sound like a small thing, but if you live somewhere humid and have watched the pages of other sourcebooks warp you'll know that it really matters. The binding is also strong and I haven't gotten the bulging in the spine that happens with other often-used books like my PHB. I also can't say enough about the art. There's a ton of it and virtually every piece is mindblowingly good. This is helped by the choice to emphasize the range of possibilities presented by the material, so, for instance, the sample Path of the Juggernaut barbarian is a gnome rather than a half-orc or dwarf. It does a lot to make the setting feel distinct. I especially love the depictions of dragon blood characters who look a bit less human (big chonky heads) than is typical for dragborn in other handbooks. Add to that the excellent city maps and fully detached fold-out continent map and the book is worth buying for the illustrations alone. As for the writing and game content, it's amazing. I missed campaign 1 and doubt I'll ever have the time to go back and watch all of it, so I bought this book in part to get a sense for what I've missed. It does not disappoint. The overview of Tal'Dorei was good enough that it replaced the novel I was reading for a few nights and the overview of the afterlives of Vox Machina gave a great sense of what happens to heroes when the adventures are over. Unsurprisingly the world-building is first-class. The world feels real and interconnected but isn't so specific that you couldn't steal tons of this stuff to drop Kraghammer or Emon directly into your own games. Mechanically, there's too much good stuff to cover. All of the new subclasses are well designed and intriguing to me, but what sets them apart is the merging of mechanics and flavor. One problem with many subclasses in the PHB, Xanathar's, etc. is the disconnect between their fluff and mechanics. Not so here. The Path of the Juggernaut barbarian is all about being an unstoppable force moving people around the battlefield, the open sea paladin is all about freedom of movement, etc. There's not much here for min/maxers, but if you want to play evocative and thematic characters, I genuinely haven't seen a better set of subclasses. To sum up, this book is the best sourcebook I've ever bought in terms of physical product, artwork, lore, and mechanics. What more could you ask for?Marion K.
I absolutely love the book, it adds a lot of fun options to the campaigns I DM, and it’s so helpful to have such an expansive world and history. The magic items are exciting and make sessions much more fun for the players, the additional stat blocks make things interesting for the DM, and getting to see the Vox Machina characters and their stat sheets are great for die hard fans. Absolutely recommend for anyone who likes Critical Role, and even those who don’t. (Also, if you have Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount, the maps can be overlaid almost perfectly to combine the continents and make for a bigger world for all your players to explore and enjoy.)Angelo P.
I'm still going through the book, but I am quite pleased with its design. As it showcases a whole continent, it is very broad, covering just about every locale. Despite that, the detail it provides is nice; it gives you a rough idea for just about every location, settlement or otherwise. I also appreciate the list of NPCs in the beginning sections as well, and the included monsters are always a boon. Just so I am being transparent to other potential buyers, I primarily bought this book to help with designing my own world. I may use it to actually create my own version of Tal'Dorei later down the road, but the usefulness it has provided for my personal world design has been significant.
