Robert Graves has done an excellent job of collating the stories of Greek mythology. There are so many fantastic elements to these stories: adventure, love, lust, virtue, battle, heroism, and of course, the supernatural beings. These are timeless stories that will continue on through the ages and still hold a moral, social, and imaginative relevance.Maggie94

9. Greek Religion [Book]
Product Details:
In this book walter burkert, the most eminent living historian of ancient greek religion, has produced the standard work for our time on that subject. first published in german in 1977, it has now been translated into english with the assistance of the author himself. a clearly structured and readable survey for students and scholars, it will be welcomed as the best modern account of any polytheistic religious system.burkert draws on archaeological discoveries, insights from other disciplines, and inscriptions in linear b to reconstruct the practices and beliefs of the minoan-mycenaean age. the major part of his book is devoted to the archaic and classical epochs. he describes the various rituals of sacrifice and libation and explains greek beliefs about purification. he investigates the inspiration behind the great temples at olympia, delphi, delos, and the acropolis – discussing the priesthood, sanctuary, and oracles. considerable attention is given to the individual gods, the position of the heroes, and beliefs about the afterlife. the different festivals are used to illuminate the place of religion in the society of the city-state. the mystery cults, at eleusis and among the followers of bacchus and orpheus, are also set in that context. the book concludes with an assessment of the great classical philosophers' attitudes to religion.insofar as possible, burkert lets the evidence — from literature and legend, vase paintings and archaeology — speak for itself; he elucidates the controversies surrounding its interpretation without glossing over the enigmas that remain. throughout, the notes (updated for the english-language edition) afford a wealth of further references as the text builds up its coherent picture of what is known of the religion of ancient greece.

Very pleased with my purchaseJ M.
I've been impressed with how accessible this text is for students and teachers. Rhodes provides an excellent commentary to fill in the gaps missing from 'Aristotle's' work. He insightful points to other sources that may've been used or ignored in Aristotle's account. I love that I would be able to give relevant portions of this to students so that they could learn from it and quote directly from it, as opposed to me telling them or them reading a textbook. Superior to online versions, worth buying the hard copy.Mrs Manners

A thorough and exhaustive laying out and discussion of the grammar. A reference book, big, a lot of pages. If that's what you're looking for, you've found it and will be glad to have it. But does it help a student learning the language? Not so much. But that is not really at all what it's for or about. Why did I give it so many stars and such a high rating? I know a valuable resource when I see it. I just have not had much use for it, that's all.watch156

This used book is in good condition. this book is missing its dust jacket. the first volume of the time-honored travel book about greece, written 2,000 years ago written in the second century ad by a greek traveller for a predominantly roman audience, pausanias' guide to greece is an extraordinarily literate and well-informed guidebook. a study of buildings, traditions and myth, it describes with precision and eloquence the glory of classical greece shortly before its ultimate decline in the third century. this volume, the first of two, concerns the five provinces of central greece, with an account of cities including athens, corinth and thebes and a compelling depiction of the oracle at delphi. along the way, pausanias recounts greek legends that are unknown from any other source and quotes a wealth of classical literature and poetry that would otherwise have been lost. an inspiration to byron and shelley, guide to greece remains one of the most influential travel books ever written. for more than seventy years, penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the english-speaking world. with more than 1,700 titles, penguin classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

An insiteful exploration into ancient Greece and the minds and lives of her people, 'the Greek Way', is an journey through Greece in the fifth century B.C through the eyes of her writers. With an indepth chapter exploring the character, works and subtleties of each of the key Greek writers, this book is witty, engaging, sensitive and totally amazing. Plus being a historical account, it also explores why ancient Greece is relevant to us today, the effect Greecian thought has had on our society, their art on our art, and how little their writings had effect on ours. Edith Hamilton's first book, 'the Greek Way' was her first book, written when she was sixty-three and ably testifies to her life-long study of the ancient country. A glorious read.Wendy Hooimeyer
