This book is light enough to at least introduce an "insomniac" to develop a curiosity about how to sleep better. On the plus side, McKenna introduces tested and effective methods for progressive muscle relaxation, breathing meditation, visualization, and stress relief. His "touch points" technique is worth a try. And his books with CDs are marketed everywhere. His CD presentation, however, is abbreviated, and lacks depth found in other resources. His muscle relaxation topic, for example, quickly moves from the foot to the ankle to the knee & on up to the neck where more traditional methods go toe-to-toe etc. at a slower and more relaxed pace. Still, his survey of how to approach sleep issues is mainstream and will help develop more effective sleeping habits without wading through all the whys and wherefores found in more developed programs. I read this many years' ago and decided to read again after finally finishing the Dark Tower series. Insomnia is a great book which most of you on King's Team already know. I'd forgotten much of it over the years' and am enjoying it like it was the first time read. One thing I like about it is reading about someone with chronic insomnia makes one very thankful to be able to sleep normally. In King's usual style, the book is a roller coaster ride of emotions and a very good study into how Stephen King's brain works. I have a strong back ground in Sleep Disorders, so I can't speak about how informative this book is. The major contribution of this book to me is making me face the word INSOMNIA without being terrified. This book some how calmed me down about insomnia and helped me face it. I don't think that I will follow their recommendations and advice verbatim, but I know that insomnia is a transitional thing that if you face it and accept it it will go away. Some of the information in this book is common knowledge, but you just never think about it amidst your scattered thoughts and fatigue due to your insomnia (example: if you nap during the day you might have a hard time sleeping at night and more) If you are purchasing this book with high hopes and expectations that your insomnia will dissipate overnight then you will be disappointed. Read it without any expectations as the information is good and the book overall is well written.tamra0315
I'm lucky in that I have only experienced insomnia after a traumatic event. However this book covers many causes of insomnia and helps you to get to the root of your problems. It does not offer a quick and dirty solution – most people have tried those and would not still be looking for answers if they actually worked. I did not even have to read the entire book to get back in the sleep pattern, but I'm hanging on to this book!!hometowngirl56
