Very relevant to Australian retirement financial issues. I particularly found the plain english explanation of Deeming rates & shares very helpful. I have recommended this book to several friends & family. The book is refreshing to have such a positive approach to retirement & money matters. It really provides an easy reference to quickly look up different Australian retirement financial matters.debcai-82
I'm nearly finished and wanted to give a review- thank you to author Patricia Howard. I was given this book as a gift and wasn't sure how much it would apply to me, as I'm a ways off from retirement. It is great though, easy to read but tackles important concepts. Most relevant part for me has been in chapters 3 and 4, making good investment choices and financial well-being. But later parts are Interesting and touch on themes that need to be talked about, especially for today's retiree age group this is an absolute hit.Thane
Preretirement financial planning is a complex area requiring careful thought and advice from different sources. This book provides a useful and easily readable summary of the issues. Clearly explains the do's and don'ts. Best not to rely on one authors viewpoint entirely but very well worth the time taken to read to help you navigate your finances through the transition into retirement.Old mate

Product Details:
The classic guide to constructing a solid portfolio—without a financial advisor! “with relatively little effort, you can design and assemble an investment portfolio that, because of its wide diversification and minimal expenses, will prove superior to the most professionally managed accounts. great intelligence and good luck are not required.” william bernstein’s commonsense approach to portfolio construction has served investors well during the past turbulent decade—and it’s what made the four pillars of investing an instant classic when it was first published nearly a decade ago. this down-to-earth book lays out in easy-to-understand prose the four essential topics that every investor must master: the relationship of risk and reward, the history of the market, the psychology of the investor and the market, and the folly of taking financial advice from investment salespeople. bernstein pulls back the curtain to reveal what really goes on in today’s financial industry as he outlines a simple program for building wealth while controlling risk. straightforward in its presentation and generous in its real-life examples, the four pillars of investing presents a no-nonsense discussion of: the art and science of mixing different asset classes into an effective blend the dangers of actively picking stocks, as opposed to investing in the whole market behavioral finance and how state of mind can adversely affect decision making reasons the mutual fund and brokerage industries, rather than your partners, are often your most direct competitors strategies for managing all of your assets—savings, 401(k)s, home equity—as one portfolio investing is not a destination. it is a journey, and along the way are stockbrokers, journalists, and mutual fund companies whose interests are diametrically opposed to yours. more relevant today than ever, the four pillars of investing shows you how to determine your own financial direction and assemble an investment program with the sole goal of building long-term wealth for you and your family.
Reviews:
One of the theories of the book is when things are cushy returns aren't the best and sometimes returns are powerful after a disaster. We have seen this during COVID 19. Despite an early sharemarket drop, returns have been very strong since and there has been a V shaped recovery in the sharemarket.Philospher King
A lot more detail than many other financial literacy books. Very down to earth and straight forward. Great for anyone wanting to learn the basics philosophies of stocks.

After reading this book, I purchased others based on the ideas set forth. Very good book for the "newbie", and its information you can trust!diesellaptops1

10. The Intelligent Investor: The Definitive Book On Value Investing [Book]

Product Details:
More than one million hardcovers sold now available for the first time in paperback! the classic text annotated to update graham's timeless wisdom for today's market conditions the greatest investment advisor of the twentieth century, benjamin graham taught and inspired people worldwide. graham's philosophy of "value investing" — which shields investors from substantial error and teaches them to develop long-term strategies — has made the intelligent investor the stock market bible ever since its original publication in 1949. over the years, market developments have proven the wisdom of graham's strategies. while preserving the integrity of graham's original text, this revised edition includes updated commentary by noted financial journalist jason zweig, whose perspective incorporates the realities of today's market, draws parallels between graham's examples and today's financial headlines, and gives readers a more thorough understanding of how to apply graham's principles. vital and indispensable, this harperbusiness essentials edition of the intelligent investor is the most important book you will ever read on how to reach your financial goals.
Reviews:
A previous reader considered at least one sentence per page to be important enough to highlight in yellow. The good condition definition reads no highlights. The book is hard to read due to the markings.19flyboy79
Warren Buffett's pick – as the best book written on his sort of investment approach to the market. Buffett's investment firm, Berkshire Hathaway, is the 9th largest company on the SP500, so he must know something investment, right? As Buffett points out in numerous public places (including clips of him being interviewed, see Youtube), Chapter 8 (on market fluctuations and how to intelligently deal with them) and Chapter 20 (on the risk of catathrophic loss and how to intelligently deal with it) are the most important chapters. The Intelligent Investor was originally written in 1949, so many of Graham's examples are very dated. However the advice itself, as Buffett notes, is timeless. Each chapter in this particular Revised Edition has been updated by Jason Zweig with newer examples that extend to 2003. Zweig's writing and examples are clearer than Graham's in my opinion. There is enough here for what Graham calls the "Defensive Investor" (those of us who buy and hold index funds for decades, essentially dollar cost averaging, allocation, re-allocation, diversification etc. etc.) to be worth a read, although much of the book pertains to the "Enterprising Investor" (those of us who aren't primarily Defensive Investors). Age old advice about confusing speculation with investing and psychological / emotional factors (such as resisting the temptation to sell when the market tanks or buying stocks at excesssively high prices when the market is bullish) abound. Good time tested advice that you probably won't hear from your stock broker or your cryptocurrency sellerjohnjacqueline
This book can be viewed as a summary of 'Security Analysis', another of the authors famous books which is generally considered to be the more hard-core text book version on the subject of investing and stock analysis. This book will help an inspiring investor understand what he/she is buying and how to justify the purchase price through arithmetic. Benjamin Graham was a fantastic mathematician so there are plenty of great examples in accounting used. The chapter commentary relates modern examples of the early 2000's tech boom-and-bust to Ben Graham's teachings throughout each chapter and the reader will find that this book is still extremely relevant in today's markets. Recommended to those who are more familiar with financial markets, as the author's writing style assumes his audience to be on a more informed level on the subject of financial markets and equities. For those that enjoy and want a little more, check out 'Security Analysis', by Benjamin Graham and David Dodd. You wont be disappointed.Mat

Reviews:
Good book definitely has changed my way of thinking.leviathafo_0
Reviews are weird… It's a book. The paper was light and crisp, making it inviting to turn the pages endlessly. It was too light to consider using as a weapon if needed though. Probably wouldn't make veryt good body armor either. The content of the book is good. If you're interested in buying real estate with little, or no money, down; this book has plenty of tips.rach3202
In hindsight I should have picked up in the title "no money" – this guy is a con man who has a poor editor and provides nothing but far fetched ideas that only loosely relate to properly investing and sound more like a school kid talking about what they would do if they found $1M. Like the scenario where you are a builder who flips houses and a Dr you know just happens to lend you $370k… what a great and applicable strategy that is to my lifePeco

Great book. Very informativeGaz
Delivered on the promiseJeff
read about the intelligent investor while browsing the internet. After much consideration I decided to bite the bullet and buy it. The only reason I gave it such a low review was because it was basically was just confirming what I already knew buy in cheap sell off big ride the market like a roller coaster. don't put all your eggs in one basket. I like the book because Graham has a broad view of investment strategies how ever he was wrong about the governmental CD as I put his strategies into practice on an asx simulator. the cds I bought didn't work out all to well. (Maybe it was a poor choice on my part.) although he made me fell better as I read it as he put one of those annoying know it all in their place. They may know a lot about science but they have zero I.Q when it comes to business. stocks and governmental bonds cds. Anyway graham was a intelligent man regardless of the book. making money off the book very intelligent. His words of wisdom were easy to read and under stand. how ever due to slow growth in recent times as business don't seem t be able to grow much technology is nearing its peak . Its not as useful as it would have been in the 1970s -1999s. Even though some of the companies are still doing ok in todays market must of them have become redundant. Grahams the intelligent investor makes it simple to understand and has They are no where near as unfortunately none of my "friend" would enjoy this type of literature to much fact not enough fiction.reader
