1. Here All Along: Finding Meaning, Spirituality, And A Deeper Connection To Life–In Judaism (After Finally Choosing To Look There) [Book]

Product Details:
A renowned political speechwriter rediscovers judaism, finding timeless wisdom and spiritual connection in its age-old practices and traditions.“ sarah hurwitz was michelle obama’s head speechwriter, and with this book she becomes judaism’s speechwriter.”—adam grant, new york times bestselling author of give and take, originals, and co-author of option b after a decade as a political speechwriter—serving as head speechwriter for first lady michelle obama, a senior speechwriter for president barack obama, and chief speechwriter for hillary clinton on her 2008 presidential campaign—sarah hurwitz decided to apply her skills as a communicator to writing a book . . . about judaism. and no one is more surprised than she is. hurwitz was the quintessential lapsed jew—until, at age thirty-six, after a tough breakup, she happened upon an advertisement for an introductory class on judaism. she attended on a whim, but was blown away by what she found: beautiful rituals, helpful guidance on living an ethical life, conceptions of god beyond the judgy bearded man in the sky—none of which she had learned in hebrew school or during the two synagogue services she grudgingly attended each year. that class led to a years-long journey during which hurwitz visited the offices of rabbis, attended jewish meditation retreats, sat at the shabbat tables of orthodox families, and read hundreds of books about judaism—all in dogged pursuit of answers to her biggest questions. what she found transformed her life, and she wondered: how could there be such a gap between the richness of what judaism offers and the way so many jews like her understand and experience it? sarah hurwitz is on a mission to close this gap by sharing the profound insights she discovered on everything from jewish holidays, ethics, and prayer to jewish conceptions of god, death, and social justice. in this entertaining and accessible book, she shows us why judaism matters and how its message is more relevant than ever, and she inspires jews to do the learning, questioning, and debating required to make this religion their own. “searching for meaning in the ancient scripture and traditions of judaism, sarah hurwitz takes us along on an enriching journey of discovery. in here all along, she explores her birthright as a jew and finds timeless and valuable life lessons.”—david axelrod, director of the university of chicago institute of politics and former senior advisor to president barack obama

4. What Do Jews Believe?: The Spiritual Foundations Of Judaism [Book]

Product Details:
Once understood as an inherited tradition, religion is increasingly viewed today as a matter of personal choice, an experience to be examined and explored. yet while many american jews feel an emotional attachment to judaism, they cannot always articulate the beliefs that define their faith. in this provocative study, david ariel explores the diverse and colorful views of jewish thinkers on the profound issues of god, human destiny, good and evil, chosenness, torah, and messianism, among many other subjects. despite a diversity of views, ariel finds an overarching structure in the "sacred myths" that jews of every orientation return to as their core beliefs – the essential ideas that each generation strives to interpret and apply to life. to call these beliefs "myths" does not mean that they are fairy tales, but rather that they are starting points that define the essence of faith. meaning, ariel argues, is always presented in the language of the myths, or beliefs, that a culture holds sacred, and the sacred myths of judaism reveal the special nature of jewish spirituality. this spirited, clarifying discussion guides us toward a definition of the beliefs that shape jewish identity, providing the rationale and stimulus for a reconnection to the spiritual tradition of judaism.

5. Basic Judaism [Book]
Product Details:
Rabbi milton steinberg's basic judaism is "one of the best presentations of essential judaism" (christian century). concise and elegant, this is a book about the faith, ideals, and practices that form the historic jewish faith. including both the modernist and the traditionalist view in his exploration, rabbi steinberg discusses the torah, what judaism says about god and the relationship between man and god, the nature of good and evil in a moral society, and what exists in the kingdom of god. he also talks about the laws that define judaism, the practices and rituals that sustain it, and the synagogue and the rabbinate that support it.for all students of judaism–be they practicing jews, uncommitted jews, or curious non-jews, rabbi steinberg offers a brilliant chance to understand what the jewish faith is, why it has elicited such intense devotion, and why it remains such a mighty force in the lives of its believers and, beyond them, the world.
Reviews:
Milton Steinberg states correctly that he cannot detail 3,000 years of history in a 250 page book. Despite this limitation, he does an excellent job of presenting Traditionalist and Modernist forms of Judaism in a well articulated, easy to understand package. I would guess that Rabbi Steinberg comes from a Traditionalist background, not because of any bias in his writing, but because of his deep affinity for the Torah. He is fair to all sides of Judaism and well represents their perspectives. He also relays a heart-string-pulling passion for his faith. I wouldn't recommend this book for someone completely new to the subject of Judaism. Rabbi Steinberg uses many Jewish terms and cites a hefty amount of history that could be confusing or, at the least, be lost without context. I would recommend reading Solomon Nigosian's "Judaism" first. Then read this book. Paired together; 3rd party and 1st person, these two books makes quite a pair and provide a great survey of this meaing- & history-rich religion.sanderssc

Product Details:
It is a story like no other: an epic of endurance against destruction, of creativity in oppression, joy amidst grief, the affirmation of life against the steepest of odds. it spans the millennia and the continents âe" from india to andalusia and from the bazaars of cairo to the streets of oxford. it takes you to unimagined places: to a jewish kingdom in the mountains of southern arabia; a syrian synagogue glowing with radiant wall paintings; the palm groves of the jewish dead in the roman catacombs. and its voices ring loud and clear, from the severities and ecstasies of the bible writers to the love poems of wine bibbers in a garden in muslim spain. and a great story unfolds. not âe" as often imagined âe" of a culture apart, but of a jewish world immersed in and imprinted by the peoples among whom they have dwelled, from the egyptians to the greeks, from the arabs to the christians. which makes the story of the jews everyoneâes story, too.

8. The Gifts Of The Jews: How A Tribe Of Desert Nomads By Thomas Cahill (Hardcover)

Product Details:
The author of the runaway bestseller "how the irish saved civilization has done it again. in "the gifts of the jews thomas cahill takes us on another enchanting journey into history, once again recreating a time when the actions of a small band of people had repercussions that are still felt today. "the gifts of the jews reveals the critical change that made western civilization possible. within the matrix of ancient religions and philosophies, life was seen as part of an endless cycle of birth and death; time was like a wheel, spinning ceaselessly. yet somehow, the ancient jews began to see time differently. for them, time had a beginning and an end; it was a narrative, whose triumphant conclusion would come in the future. from this insight came a new conception of men and women as individuals with unique destinies–a conception that would inform the declaration of independence–and our hopeful belief in progress and the sense that tomorrow can be better than today. as thomas cahill narrates this momentous shift, he also explains the real significance of such biblical figures as abraham and sarah, moses and the pharaoh, joshua, isaiah, and jeremiah. full of compelling stories, insights and humor, "the gifts of the jews is an irresistible exploration of history as fascinating and fun as "how the irish saved civilization.

Remember this is a dynamic equivalent. Author was not going for a literal translation, but only revealing the Jewishness of the Bible both OT and NT and the Jewishness of Jesus Christ (Yeshua haMashiach). The study notes are great and allows one to delve deep into the Word.turtle_trade
Even if you are a recent believer, then this Bible is amazing. Its geared towards Jewish Yeshua (Jesus) believers/recent converts (as I am).Gary
I truly like this version of scripture as it really does help you to understand the roots of Christianity and Judaism and combines them both. I like how it describes the ancient names of YHVH and Yeshua the Christ. I highly recommend that you read the introduction to the book to kind of have some insight, instead of just jumping right into scripture. I know it is truly a treasured book to me and the flexisoft covering is so much nicer than hardcover to me anyways. I wish I could of afforded the actual leather but it is truly awesome for the price that I paid. I truly love the explanations of the names of our God, such as ADONAI and Elohim, truly take time and get this version and be prepared to expand your mind as it teaches also the names of many people throughout the scriptures. I know I struggle trying to learn the pronunciation of the names but it's awesome to see and try.morbius45105

16. How Judaism Became A Religion: An Introduction To Modern Jewish Thought [Book]

Product Details:
A new approach to understanding jewish thought since the eighteenth centuryis judaism a religion, a culture, a nationality—or a mixture of all of these? in how judaism became a religion, leora batnitzky boldly argues that this question more than any other has driven modern jewish thought since the eighteenth century. this wide-ranging and lucid introduction tells the story of how judaism came to be defined as a religion in the modern period—and why jewish thinkers have fought as well as championed this idea.ever since the enlightenment, jewish thinkers have debated whether and how judaism—largely a religion of practice and public adherence to law—can fit into a modern, protestant conception of religion as an individual and private matter of belief or faith. batnitzky makes the novel argument that it is this clash between the modern category of religion and judaism that is responsible for much of the creative tension in modern jewish thought. tracing how the idea of jewish religion has been defended and resisted from the eighteenth century to today, the book discusses many of the major jewish thinkers of the past three centuries, including moses mendelssohn, abraham geiger, hermann cohen, martin buber, zvi yehuda kook, theodor herzl, and mordecai kaplan. at the same time, it tells the story of modern orthodoxy, the german-jewish renaissance, jewish religion after the holocaust, the emergence of the jewish individual, the birth of jewish nationalism, and jewish religion in america.more than an introduction, how judaism became a religion presents a compelling new perspective on the history of modern jewish thought.

20. How To Run A Traditional Jewish Household [Book]

Product Details:
How to run a traditional jewish household is a modern, comprehensive guide covering virtually every aspect of jewish home life. it provides practical advice on how to manage a jewish home in the traditional way and offers fascinating accounts of the history behind the tradition. in a warm, personal style, blu greenberg shows that, contrary to popular belief, the home, and not the synagogue, is the most important institution in jewish life. divided into three large sections—"the jewish way," "special stages of life," and "celebration and remembering"—this book educates the uninitiated and reminds the already observant jew of how judaism approaches daily life. topics include prayer, dress, holidays, food preparation, marriage, birth, death, parenthood, and many others. this description of the modern-yet-traditional jewish household will earn special regard among the many american jews who are re-exploring their ties to jewish tradition. such jews will find this book a flexible guide that provides a knowledge of the requirements of traditional judaism without advocating immediate and complete compliance. how to run a traditional jewish household will also appeal to observant jews, providing them with helpful tips on how to manage their homes and special insights into the most minute details and procedures in a traditional household. herself a traditional jew, blu greenberg is nevertheless quite sympathetic to feminist views on the role of women in jewish observance. how to run a traditional jewish household therefore speaks intimately to women who are struggling to reconcile their identities as modern women with their commitments to traditional judaism.
Reviews:
It gives a lot of information, but it's not as "orthodox" as I would had hoped it would be. The author is angry that part of the men's morning blessings includes thanking the Creator for not having made them a woman…even as a convert, I understand that it's not an "anti-woman" statement…while it has lots of good info that was very helpful, I wish it was more factual instead of tainted with all she doesn't like.dreamessentials85
My favorite book ever! Blu Greenberg does a much better job describing how to run a Jewish home than any Rabbi. Her writing style and content is better too. No offence ment to her husband who is also a talented writter as well as Rabbinic authority. Blu Greenberg just knows how to run a Jewish home better.jtnashjan
