An excellent complement to The Knowledge Project podcast95bonty
This book has enabled me to re-shape how my brain processes information and given me so much more confidence in my decision-making abilities. I feel that my upbringing through traditional schooling failed to prepare me for the real world, and I have feared being "left behind" for a long time. This book (and its author's other works) have enabled me to take control of my reactions & the direction my life is taking. I can't recommend it enough. Set the new foundation for your thinking by integrating mental models, and viewing the world more accurately for what it is, simply by reading through Volume 1 of The Great Mental Models. I did, and I will never look back! Can't wait to get cracking on Volume 2!J.C.

Reviews:
I read this book straight through, and marked off anything new to refer back. The book is a light read but offers enough models to trigger interest and follow up in more depth. The book is good for work thinking, scenarios and creative writing when working scenes and character traits. The models I recognise from work as well as from writing and drawing class or wood working. But in a different context. Which gives more depth to there capabilities. The book can also highlight your thinking preferences and where you need to add more range.Daniel can read now

Reviews:
I read this via my public library. I liked it so much , I purchased it for my book shelf. We as a species are on autopilot and this book explains why. Humans understand most body systems and their operations. Very little is known of our minds and the difference between it and our brains. After reading this book, your daily thoughts and desires will take on a whole new outlook.2knives1*
Psychology book in which common sense is presented as psychobabble and jargon then dispensed as science and new discoveries or "insights" into the way people think. For example the presentation of "prospect theory", in which someone's decision making process between two variables is found to be a function of what they are comparing. Such as the choice between getting a million dollars for sure or a 25% chance of getting four million, is found to be different for someone who already has ten million, compared to someone who has nothing. This can be summed up in the simple common sense phrase "It's all relative", with no need to research or explain or needlessly develop "new" behavioural theories. Then the equally absurd "theory induced blindness" in which a researcher develops a theory and can't see things any other way. A classic case of someone not being able to see the wood for the trees. Even the main premise of the book as referred to in it's title is simply about instinctive (fast) and considered (slow) thinking. It goes on and on in the same vain for over four hundred pages without offering a single new insight which could not be encapsulated by a simple common sense couplet or well known idiom or proverb. This cannot be disguised by the author's chatty and self-effacing writing style in which his familiarity with us and occasional pretension of doubt of his own theories is another manipulative tool used so we can forgive our "friend" for his true but rehashed drivel and jargonisation. Not only that, but such insights, rather than being of use to humanity, or adding to the sum of human knowledge, are useful only to the worst and most cynical and untrustworthy type of manipulative psychologists; the marketeers, advertisers and salesmen.cgodbol
This book is often quoted and rightly so. It's a great insight into how we think and how we draw conclusions. Don't think of it as a text book; it's been slightly dumbed down to make it very readable.Pietro

Reviews:
Must read book on dealing with the issues of the past and moving into your future. It feels like Dr. Deloney is in the room with you helping guide you.weewaa2006
Dr. Delony has a writing style that is easy to read, follow, and connects the reader in a way that makes you feel he is with you, in person – coaching you through the processing of your own mental health journey and recovery. His sense of humor and wit are pretty epic in his book – in a very good way. Don't forget to read the footnotes – there are some pretty funny stuff in there! The only criticism I have is I wish the book came with a journal or workbook, which aligned with chapters in the book. Make no mistake, Dr. Delony will make you do homework in this book (ask the hard questions for you to ponder and self-assessment), and I believe a workbook/journal would be an awesome addition to organize your thoughts, write them down and self reflect on your answers. If you are serious in getting and being well – then please read this book! I look forward to seeing other works from Dr. Delony in the future.Des Crane

I admire what Tony Robbins has done over the years. He is successful and inspires and instructs others to be the best they can be.munchxkin
i bought this book many years ago just to see what tony robbins had to offer. I got one ting from it and that was a quick way to stop biting my nails. many of the techniques that are used in this book are pulled directly from the pages of the NLP training guides and are a little dated. I have read a quote from the developer of NLP sayign that Tony Robbins gives people that attend his seminars phobias about eating meat so he gave them all a phobia about eating vegetables because he wanted them to make up their own mind. So when you are reading this book remember that it's up to you to make up your mind about what you do with it

20. Mental Models: Thinking Tools To Increase Your Productivity, Improving Decision Making Skills, Logical Analysis, And Problem-Solving. Learn How To Change Your Mind And Control Your Life. [Book]

Product Details:
Mental models are simulations created by the mind to make sense of the world and predict. metal models are tools the mind uses for thinking and making decisions. phil johnson-laird and ruth byrne have proposed the idea of mental models to explain how humans think. – models can be three-dimensional objects that people, like ownership or negation, can rotate in their minds or abstract concepts that cannot be visualized. mental models can be compared to the blueprint of an architect or the dna model of a biologist, with the distinction that mental models are abstract images that are intangible, and not physical. models can be drawn from a wide range of fields: economics, biology, military, engineering, math, etc. for another, a model derived from one domain may serve as an analogy. – the theoretical number of mental models is infinite. but some, including shane parrish, suggest that you research various mental models to enhance your thought. he has compiled a comprehensive collection of models from different domains that are useful for application to many problem types. examples include first thought principles: based on fundamental facts rather than referring to what you already know (analogies). a conceptual model is simply a description of the workings of something. – some of contents in this book are listed here:mental models – the power of our mind – what is your mental model? – creative thinking skills effective mental tools to get creative solutions to problems – decision making mistakes to avoid – what are you waiting for… click to buy your copy now
