The next thing best after a live teacher to teach you how to do this is definitely this book. It is funny to read with a tone of sarcasm and patronization, but it makes learning more entertaining and time fly faster for a boring task like this. It doesn’t hurt to share what you learn from this book with friends and family too. I’ve always found the colour theme to this series is atrocious. Yes it gets the potential buyers attention with its emergency like bio hazard colour theme, but it completely depersonalizes the book, and when it is a dummy book about human emotions or sex, that’s hardly appealing to pick up and read, let alone have it on your bookshelf at home. It really screams mass production, can’t be lazed designing the cover.

This book is certianly the best account of World War II that I have ever read. Over the past few years I have read various books about one of the greatest wars in all of history, and there is no doubt that this is the best of all I've read. The authors do a tremendous job of communicating life on the home front as well as the battle front. The audience are able to get inside the lives of those who had to suffer the war, and at times it feels as if the reader is experiencing it himself. No book can ever do justice to what the war was really like, but this book enables readers feel the suffering of soldiers who saw their friends die right next to them and fear that the next knock on the door may be one delivering a telegram that a loved one is dead. The photographs effectively supplement the text and further communicate the message. This book clearly communicates what made America great, something that most people today do not understand and are trying to throw away. I would highly reccomend this book to anyone interested in America's greatest victory. It is perfect for reading through, brushing up on history, or for reference. Excellent book. I have rewad it twice now. My original copy was lost in a fire. It fits well into my library. One of the most compelling books of Vietnam and its conflict. Film was good, but the books fills in the gaps. Being a cornish man it also tells the story of the only cornish man to be a la Drang, Rick Rescorla, who survived all this only to die saving lives at the Twin Towers. This is an excellent account of the first major battle between US forces and the NVA. It contains detailed and graphic descriptions of the battle and contains information on what the NVA was doing at that time. The horror of war is very clear. Much of the book is made up of quotes from the soldiers who were there and what they experienced. I think the book would have benefitted from tighter editing. The details on each unit are repeated so often that it interferes with the flow. Moore thinks that the results of this battle in which 12 NVA are killed for each US death set the tone for the rest of the war. The US would wage a war of attrition in which the NVA/Viet Cong deaths would so outnumer our casualities that we would win the war. What a disaster!basil305

This is an excellent book. It is a riveting read which presents a first-hand account from the perspective of the Marines who fought the battle to hold Toktong Pass open so the 1st Marine Division (and supporting elements) could "advance in a different direction" (breakout, retreat, or withdraw) from the Chosin Reservoir where they were being overwhelmed by mass 'human wave' attacks by the Chinese "People's Volunteer Army." Over a 17-day period, a single isolated company (F Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment) dug-in on the frozen crest of a hill overlooking the pass beat off repeated large-scale attacks. This was a crucial battle, because if they had been overrun and the pass closed, it seems likely that the retreat would have been blocked and the 1st Marine Division encircled and effectively destroyed. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the Korean War or first-hand accounts of soldiers in battle – particularly under winter war conditions.
