1. Strength To Love [Book]

Product Details:
"if there is one book martin luther king, jr. has written that people consistently tell me has changed their lives, it is strength to love." so wrote coretta scott king. she continued: "i believe it is because this book best explains the central element of martin luther king, jr.'s philosophy of nonviolence: his belief in a divine, loving presence that binds all life." in these short meditative and sermonic pieces, some of them composed in jails and all of them crafted during the tumultuous years of the civil rights struggle, dr. king articulated and espoused in a deeply personal compelling way his commitment to justice and to the intellectual, moral, and spiritual conversion that makes his work as much a blueprint today for christian discipleship as it was then. individual readers, as well as church groups and students will find in this work a challenging yet energizing vision of god and redemptive love.

Reviews:
MLK is one of my historical mentors, and I came away with a much greater appreciation for the man after reading Phillips' book. King was the center of the Civil Rights movement, and his dedication to the movement's principles and goals was unwavering. This book shows how King kept the movement focused on the major issues, and kept the movement's credibility at a very high level. Knowing what he was up against on a local and national level, King used the media, publicity, and eventually public opinion to his advantage at a time when America was bitterly divided on the issue of racial equality. Anyone in a leadership position can benefit immensely from this book, as MLK demonstrated better than anyone how to stay focused on your goals and objectives no matter what the cost.olemiss1991

Reviews:
The Three Mothers is an eye-opening read that encourages us to take seriously not only the ways in which Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin were shaped by their mothers but also how these women resisted assaults on their own personhood as Black women and claimed their dignity when very few would. Drawing from a myriad of sources that indicates her prowess as a researcher and scholar, Malaika Tubbs does a masterful job of weaving together the stories of these women, their work, and their impact on their children to paint an accessible, thought-provoking portrait of the promise and pain of Black motherhood. Furthermore, by detailing these mothers’ lives through the historical context in which they were born, struggled, and strived, Malaika Tubbs skillfully reminds us that it is impossible to tell the story of America, much less the world, without centering the experiences of Black mothers in particular and Black women in general. This profound truth makes The Three Mothers required reading if we are to give an honest account about who we and the men we admire are indebted to, and who is owed our deepest respect, support, and love – Black women.Farris Blount III
Great concept for a book and can't wait to read it!Historical fiction
If you are a mother, have ever had a mother, or want to honor a mother you know…. this is a superb way to spend an afternoon with three common women who raised extraordinary sons. Each story examines both the hardships and privileges that shaped these women's lives. It is an unvarnished example of how everyday wins and losses can become a foundation for transformation, rather than devolve into ego or excess. And a tribute to "daily courage" keeping families strong. There are no grand gestures or secret speeches these men received as children… no holy grail given to these mothers over all the other mothers in history. What we see is Every Woman. I was left with a clear view of how we are each just a small dot in the continuum of family, over many generations, and how we build lives and expectations on the labors of those who went before us. As vastly different as these three women were, what they had in common was an unfailing belief that Love and integrity are passed down by example. Each understood Charity as an action, rather than a conversation. And though Faith (with a capital F) was devout for some, each mother adhered to another kind of faith — knowing they would live these values no matter what life threw at them. The book is rangeing at times, jumping between their stories rather than telling each seamlessly, in one full timeline, but that's hardly annoying enough to miss out on the fuller narrative. It's an exceptional history lesson of the power in any mom.Lysa
6. Living The Dream: The Contested History Of Martin Luther King Jr. Day [Book]

Product Details:
Day and the battle over king's legacy that continued through the decades that followed. creating the first national holiday to honor an african american was a formidable achievement and an act of resistance against conservative and segregationist opposition. congressional efforts to commemorate king began shortly after his assassination. the ensuing political battles slowed the progress of granting him a namesake holiday and crucially defined how his legacy would be received. though coretta scott king's mission to honor her husband's commitment to nonviolence was upheld, conservative politicians sought to use the holiday to advance a whitewashed, nationalistic, and even reactionary vision of king's life and thought. this book reveals the lengths that activists had to go to elevate an african american man to the pantheon of national heroes, how conservatives took advantage of the commemoration to bend the arc of king's legacy toward something he never would have expected, and how grassroots causes, unions, and antiwar demonstrators continued to try to claim this sanctified day as their own.

10. The Sword And The Shield: The Revolutionary Lives Of Malcolm X And Martin Luther King Jr [Book]

Product Details:
To most americans, malcolm x and martin luther king jr. represent contrasting ideals: self-defense vs. nonviolence, black power vs. civil rights, the sword vs. the shield. the struggle for black freedom is wrought with the same contrasts. while nonviolent direct action is remembered as an unassailable part of american democracy, the movement's militancy is either vilified or erased outright. joseph upends these misconceptions and reveals a nuanced portrait of two men who, despite markedly different family histories, religious affiliations, and class backgrounds, inspired each other throughout their adult lives. malcolm's push to connect pan-africanism to an international human rights agenda mirrored the "beloved community" that king eloquently articulated at the march on washington. similarly, the anti-war and anti-poverty campaigns of king's final years unleashed a stinging critique of racism, militarism, and materialism that echoed malcolm's impassioned anti-colonialism. the sword and the shield is the definitive history of not only the revolutionary lives and political impact of these leaders, but also of the movement and era they came to define. —
