2. Making China Modern: From The Great Qing To Xi Jinping [Book]
Product Details:
“thoughtful, probing…a worthy successor to the famous histories of fairbank and spence [that] will be read by all students and scholars of modern china.”—william c. kirby, coauthor of can china lead? it is tempting to attribute the rise of china to deng xiaoping and to recent changes in economic policy. but china has a long history of creative adaptation. in the eighteenth century, the qing empire dominated a third of the world’s population. then, as the opium wars and the taiping rebellion ripped the country apart, china found itself verging on free fall. more recently, after mao, china managed a surprising recovery, rapidly undergoing profound economic and social change. a dynamic story of crisis and recovery, failure and triumph, making china modern explores the versatility and resourcefulness that guaranteed china’s survival, powered its rise, and will determine its future.“ chronicles reforms, revolutions, and wars through the lens of institutions, often rebutting western impressions.”—new yorker“a remarkable accomplishment. unlike an earlier generation of scholarship, making china modern does not treat china’s contemporary transformation as a postscript. it accepts china as a major and active player in the world, places china at the center of an interconnected and global network of engagement, links domestic politics to international dynamics, and seeks to approach china on its own terms.”—wen-hsin yeh, author of shanghai splendor

3. America Second: How America's Elites Are Making China Stronger [Book]
Product Details:
A timely, provocative exposé of american political and business leadership’s deep ties to china: a network of people who believe they are doing the right thing—at a profound and often hidden cost to u.s. interests.the past few years have seen relations between china and the united states shift, from enthusiastic economic partners, to wary frenemies, to open rivals. americans have been slow to wake up to the challenges posed by the chinese communist party. why did this happen? in america second, isaac stone fish traces the evolution of the party’s influence in america. he shows how america’s leaders initially welcomed china’s entry into the u.s. economy, believing that trade and engagement would lead to a more democratic china. and he explains how—although this belief has proved misguided–many of our businesspeople and politicians have become too dependent on china to challenge it. america second exposes a deep network of beijing’s influence in america, built quietly over the years through prominent figures like former secretaries of state henry kissinger and madeleine albright, disney chairman bob iger, and members of the bush family. and it shows how to fight that influence–without being paranoid, xenophobic, or racist. this is an authoritative and important story of corruption and good intentions gone wrong, with serious implications not only for the future of the united states, but for the world at large.
Reviews:
Stone Fish is an expert storyteller who weaves together shocking and hilarious anecdotes of high-level US-China engagement to illustrate how vulnerable American institutions of power are to China's influence efforts. While other researchers have reported on individual instances of corruption or outsize influence, this book masterfully dissects China's tactics and illustrates how they are ubiquitous, strategic and intentionally deployed in all facets of US-China engagement. America Second is a must read for anyone seeking to better understand China's unique brand of covert, highly effective lobbying tactics.Chinahand
Fantastically researched and clearly written, a must-read for anyone hoping to understand the pulse at the heart of our country's relationship with China.Anon
America Second provides a fascinating account of how susceptible American power brokers are to Chinese flattery and influence. This book is meticulously researched and filled with both shocking and hilarious anecdotes. A must read for anyone seeking to better understand how the Chinese government exploits individual and commercial self-interest to turn American companies, politicians and other key influencers into de facto lobbyists for the Chinese agenda.A fan

Reviews:
I was first alerted to this book by a lady traveller I was sat next to on an internal flight in the USA nearly two years ago. The moment I returned home I ordered it from my local library. If you're interested in your own (& those dear to you) personal diet, health and wellbeing you need to read this book. Since reading it I mainly eat fish, difficult when my wife has never, as an adult, eaten fish and have reduced my red meat consumption down to a minimum as well as eating a great many more seeds, grains, fruit and juice. I've also reduced my alcohol consumption. I've now bought my own copy as a result of my eldest son's interest – he's 25, stopped smoking and living a healthier lifestyle.ltehome
This book is my Bible. I've been studying raw whole foods diets for many years, and although I am a lay person, I know how I feel …and LOOK … when I eat this way. This book does an excellent job of presenting well-researched, even academic, material in a highly readable, easy-to-grasp manner…complete with lots of graphs and charts that, for visual learners like me, demonstrate the text in a flash. The film, Forks Over Knives, was my first introduction to the concepts covered in The China Study, and watching it made me hungry for more info. Dr. Campbell is a fearless pioneer in his field, one to be admired and respected.jamaica-judy
This book was written by a research doctor and explains why we get sick & fat and backs it all up with 30 years of research data. Also, it is NOT selling any product or service (like weight watchers). It just explains how to improve your health and the reasoning behind the recommendations. It also explains the economic reasons why, even though they know, our government, drug companies and most doctors will not tell the American public about it. I have lost weight, lowered my Blood Pressure about 30 points to 120/73 and my cholesterol dropped from 204 to 146 in 3 weeks by just changing the way I eat. After 2 heart attacks (and bypass surgery) I finally got serious about my health. Get this book, it costs about the same as a Super Sized meal @ McDonalds and can change your life for the better in just weeks.GLGINAZ

Product Details:
A leading global public intellectual explains how, while america became arrogant and distracted, a three-thousand-year-old civilization is well on the way to becoming the number one power in the world. the twenty-first century's great geopolitical contest has begun. a major trade war has broken out. american and chinese naval vessels are having close encounters in the south china sea. american congressmen and businessmen are cheering their government's public attacks on china. china is standing firm and resolute. who will win this contest? what is at stake? and who will judge the winner? in this book, kishore mahbubani evaluates the two sides, and shows how china has been thinking on a global scale, launching ambitious initiatives under some of the world's most pragmatic and competent leaders. most critically, the chinese people have regained their cultural confidence. chinese society is now infused with innovation and dynamism. meanwhile, america has seen the power of its economic model badly damaged by the 2008 financial crisis. to many it is no longer the indispensable nation but an awkward interloper.the global rise of china and the relative strategic decline of the us presents a political challenge that the us has never faced before. american policymakers must shake off their complacency and launch a major strategic reboot of both domestic and foreign policies that have weakened the nation's social foundations and global standing. otherwise, the start-up nation, barely two hundred and fifty years old, with only a quarter of china's population, cannot expect to defeat the world's oldest continuous civilization. with his trademark candor, mahbubani delivers impartial and incisive insights on the strategic stakes and mistakes in this new great game.
Reviews:
With clear arguments Mahbubani lays out the case for treating China with respect and counters the silly war rhetoric of the Western political class. A great read for all peace loving people.Peacenik
Read this book to my Mum. Found the concepts and the view of the world very much in line with our own observations and realise that we look at actions while a great many people follow what other people say, whether it's true or not. Some of the Chinese history is not quite correct.Cyni book fiend
