Reviews:
I like the chapter by chapter approach to each diagnosis. I've used this w/ clients who have substance abuse issues, but this focuses on other mental health diagnoses. the clinical examples are helpful, but maybe rather lengthy. This approach is still in it's infancy regarding empirical data to back it up with mental health issues. If you work in a setting where only empirically supported treatment is allowed, it might be difficult to make a case for applying this skill set in your work.jimilton80401

19. Motivational Interviewing And Stages Of Change In Intimate Partner Violence [Book]

Product Details:
Motivational interviewing (mi) is a therapeutic strategy and counselling approach that is based on the recognition that clients who need to make changes approach counselling at different levels of readiness to change. mi attempts to establish a therapeutic alliance with the client by using a high level of empathic listening, affirming the client's autonomy and choice, and matching interventions to the client's stage of change. as such, it is intended to create a non-judgemental, non-confrontational, and non-adversarial climate in which the client is "accepted" despite the presence of "unacceptable behaviour." the approach attempts to increase the client's awareness of the potential problems caused, consequences experienced, and risks faced as a result of the unhealthy behaviour in question. therapists help clients realise the benefits of change and help them become motivated and committed to achieve it.
Reviews:
The concept of Motivational interviewing is an innovative therapeutic strategy which recognises that individuals proceed through a set of stages when preparing for, accomplishing, and maintaining behavioural change. Motivational interviewing is based on the transtheoretical model (TTM) which outlines five distinct stages of readiness to change: Pre-contemplation, Contemplation, Preparation, Action, and Maintenance. No book to date has focused exclusively on applying the "Motivational interviewing" concept to intimate partner violenceuntil now. This volume presents important applications of Motivational interviewong and TTM concepts with both victims and perpetrators alike. The book consists of research studies that investigate the advantages and challenges of Motivational interviewing. The authors provide readers with new intervention models and techniques for domestic violence that will ultimately help victims and perpetrators of abuse break down the barriers to change. In todays modern therapy's, Motivational interviewing has become increasingly widespread among counsellors and therapists, but no literature to date has focused exclusively on applying Motivational interviewing to domestic and partner violence such as this great book has. This book has been written by established authorities in the field, the enclosed chapters represent important applications of motivational enhancement strategies to intimate partner violence with both victims and perpetrators of abuse. These studies include descriptive research on victims and perpetrators of abuse, measurement issues in assessing stages of change, and real-world applications of motivational interviewing. The author(s), Murphy and Maiuro illustrate both the benefits and challenges inherent in this growing area of research. Whilst this book does inherently describe the process from the point of view of "research", in practice, it doesn't seem to be a really useful resource as a stand alone tool. But rather playing a resourceful part of a practitioners/students toolbox of tools used in "Motivational Interviewing" skills. Please note, this book is predominantly about the research on the effectiveness and offers only a few "real-time" tips on applying the method. It is also mostly devoted to offenders and perpetrators of violence and abuse, and their stages of change. Overall, this is a very useful tool to use in combination with a range of other tools. This book is suited to the student practitioner and practising practitioner alike. Definitely a book for your professional and personal library and well worth a readozhappybrowser
