3. Cruel Optimism [Book]
Product Details:
A relation of cruel optimism exists when something you desire is actually an obstacle to your flourishing. offering bold new ways of conceiving the present, lauren berlant describes the cruel optimism that has prevailed since the 1980s, as the social-democratic promise of the postwar period in the united states and europe has retracted. people have remained attached to unachievable fantasies of the good life—with its promises of upward mobility, job security, political and social equality, and durable intimacy—despite evidence that liberal-capitalist societies can no longer be counted on to provide opportunities for individuals to make their lives “add up to something.” arguing that the historical present is perceived affectively before it is understood in any other way, berlant traces affective and aesthetic responses to the dramas of adjustment that unfold amid talk of precarity, contingency, and crisis. she suggests that our stretched-out present is characterized by new modes of temporality, and she explains why trauma theory—with its focus on reactions to the exceptional event that shatters the ordinary—is not useful for understanding the ways that people adjust over time, once crisis itself has become ordinary. cruel optimism is a remarkable affective history of the present.

Reviews:
I was very disappointed with the book. It is not a children’s book, it is written in a simple manner but not really directed in any children that I know. I’ve been working with children for 24 years and I can’t see how I could use this book. I actually have a couple of teenagers that I would use excerpts of the book to help them understand the concept of optimism so for that I thank youDK
This is a gift for a 10-year old male who can share optimism with others. Finding a way to communicate in a way to help others is one of the objectives of giving the book to a neighbor's child.Audrey S.

11. It Starts With Us: A Novel [Book]
Product Details:
After nearly two years separated, she is elated that for once, time is on their side, and she immediately says yes when atlas asks her on a date. but her excitement is quickly hampered by the knowledge that, though they are no longer married, ryle is still very much a part of her life—and atlas corrigan is the one man he will hate being in his ex-wife and daughter’s life. revealing more about atlas’s past and following lily as she embraces a second chance at true love while navigating a jealous ex-husband, it proves that “no one delivers an emotional read like colleen hoover” (anna todd, new york times bestselling author).
Reviews:
Who knew we needed a sequel. A Wonderful addition to the characters lives. Although the first book made me sad I loved that there was hope at the end. To have a storyline/book where it truly is focus on Atlas and Lily was a fabulous added touch. I truly enjoyed the Theo character what a lovable grown up boy he was. I enjoyed the other subplot storyline that happened. This book was very realistic in the way it depicts what happens when a divorce mother begins dating and has to deal with possible fallout of the ex-husband not being okay with it. Another exceptional storyline by Ms. Hoover bravo to her.Ann-Marie B.
The Perfect Sequel to It Ends With Us This was such a perfect end to a story we didn t know we needed a sequel to. It Ends With Us ended on a perfect note and we kinda gather what was going to happen to Lily and Atlas. It Starts With Us gave such an incredible story a love story we needed to read. I loved it for so many different reasons Lily is a superhero! Atlas is perfection and Rile is in desperate need of someone who can help him I cant help but feel bad for him I know I shouldn t but I can t help it. Colleen you ve done it again and I can t recommend this book enough. 2 people found this helpfulYady S.
The uplift we all need I have read everything Colleen Hoover has written so I had been counting the days until “It Starts With Us” was released. Meanwhile I reread “It Ends With Us” to refresh my memory of the characters. (It made me realize that I want to go back and reread all her books.) I fell in love all over again with Lily and Atlas. It was a hard heartfelt read. “It Starts With Us” picks up where the first book ends and we readers not only wanted that we needed it. These books will hit home with many people and it will offer them encouragement and hope. And we all need that. It s an absolute perfect read and you walk away feeling content. We all need that too.KNH
12. The Rational Optimist: How Prosperity Evolves [Book]
Product Details:
Life is getting better—and at an accelerating rate. but they have been saying this for two hundred years. yet matt ridley does more than describe how things are getting better. he explains why. prosperity comes from everybody working for everybody else. the habit of exchange and specialization—which started more than 100,000 years ago—has created a collective brain that sets human living standards on a rising trend. the mutual dependence, trust, and sharing that result are causes for hope, not despair. this bold book covers the entire sweep of human history, from the stone age to the internet, from the stagnation of the ming empire to the invention of the steam engine, from the population explosion to the likely consequences of climate change. it ends with a confident assertion that thanks to the ceaseless capacity of the human race for innovative change, and despite inevitable disasters along the way, the twenty-first century will see both human prosperity and natural biodiversity enhanced. acute, refreshing, and revelatory, the rational optimist will change your way of thinking about the world for the better.
Reviews:
You get the bad news all the time, so this book surprises you by telling how good things are. Don't expect the "we are all doomed" scenarios of the Deep Greens, here is why trade, development and progress will keep on making all of us wealthier, fitter, living longer and having more free time. Not the message anyone is hearing often today, but the evidence is all around us, Matt Ridley shows the way things devoloped and gives hope that it can all continue. Read this and you will be able to give the pessimists a really hard time!mrsteviebcnx
I really enjoyed this book. The author pulls in evidence to support his thesis from diverse areas of science and history, methodically establishing his points or destroying the expected objections. He even had a chapter devoted to why negativity is so persistent and popular, in spite of being so often proved wrong. Ties in the idea that we humans evolve not only biologically but also sociologically, and while the process of evolution can not have a destination it does have a direction. That direction is toward complexity and prosperity. See also "God and the New Metaphysics" by Herb Gruning for a more theological take on that idea.quidnunc9
Throughout history there has never been a time when there is any shortage of people predicting a disaster awaiting the world at some point in the future. None of the prophets of doom are ever held to account when their gloomy predictions fail to come true, which is nearly always. So-called "scientists" are still doing it today and people are falling over each other to believe their doom-laden view of the world, which will ultimately be proved as wrong as all the others. This is a "glass half-full" look at the world. All indications are that the world is on course for a happy, healthy and prosperous future. Poverty and hunger are on a downward spiral and the human race is doing what it has always done best: adapting to change and taking advantage of it. but the prophets of doom are still hard at work trying to undermine all of that.hjmulliner

This is a great inspirational book to get your positive outlook going. I do want to put a side note that if you are all about provable facts then you might be a little disappointed- many of the anecdotes don't have factual proof that they occurred. But it's a nice short read that encourages you to have a better and positive outlook on life. Another important note is that there are religious and spiritual references. Nice read for the pool!nazee.m

18. Candide: Or Optimism (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition) [Book]
Product Details:
With its vibrant new translation, perceptive introduction, and witty packaging, this new edition of voltaire’s masterpiece belongs in the hands of every reader pondering our assumptions about human behavior and our place in the world. candide tells of the hilarious adventures of the naïve candide, who doggedly believes that “all is for the best” even when faced with injustice, suffering, and despair. controversial and entertaining, candide is a book that is vitally relevant today in our world pervaded by—as candide would say—“the mania for insisting that all is well when all is by no means well.”
Reviews:
Voltaire was an intellectual rogue. He sets up his paper tiger then, with characteristic cynicism, proceeds with his pornographic mockery. He dishes up sarcasm and criticism for every institution he considers, but naturally provides no positive alternatives. If you somehow like the failed rantings of an over-esteemed, conceited 18th century "philosopher" then you'll line up with everyone else to robotically sing his praises. I, like others, had to read his tripe for college, but I refused to laud the man. He is a bigmouthed loser who gets away with it just because he's brilliant. Voltaire's message is empty; he gave us nothing, excepting the guillotine. If the book had been written in 2010 no one would even publish it. Voltaire is intellectual cancer. Don't let your professor tell you Candide has greatness – it's old, but it's trash.2003_ub313
Linus R
If you excuse the ramblings of the basement dwelling, second rate community college dropout who has nothing better to do than dish out 1 star reviews of Voltaire on eBay of all places, then youll soon find out after reading Candide that it great quick read that remains relevant even today. I think the Chris Wear illustrated version is great in that the style of cartoon and cartoons themselves better portray the absurd and fantastical nature of the story.landofthegun406
