This is a book for oil painters who want to develop a broader range of skills, many of which are lost today. It is an excellent book for someone looking to understand HOW the masters painted, and the many techniques they used, most of which you will not learn in many art schools today. I attended to a very good BFA art program, but they were only interested in developing a students artistic vision, figuring that the kids would gain the needed skills on their own as they went along. They may have had their priorities straight, but their method backwards, as most students need to master skills first, and then develop a vision pursuant to that mastery. If you are on either a student or a professional (like myself) but feel a hole in your painterly skillset the size of the Sistine ceiling, this book may be for you. Especially if you yearn to paint figuratively. This is not a book about photo-realism, although most of my profs wouldn't have known the difference. The author sometimes comes off as rather stuffy, and his adulation of Bougereau would make my old college profs cringe. His own skills (examples) are not on the level of the masters he invokes, but he seems to know a lot about their methods and communicates them well, which is what matters. The well-printed color plates alone are worth the cost of the book, with some of the best Vermeers, Rembrandts, Holbeins and Van Dykes I've ever seen, among many others. There is a dearth of contemporary work here, but for that buy "Classical Painting Atelier: A Contemporary Guide to Traditional Studio Practice" by Juliette Aristides, and you will have a solid pair of books on traditional oil technique and practice by two very good teachers.midnightbruiser

It's rather like having an encyclopedia of painting. Lots of good info. Just have to be sure that you're aware of which media is being taught!!! Acrylic vs pastel? Lots of difference in techniques! I do like the book very much though Sometimes, when I'm done with a painting and it doesn't work, I'll go through this book and it sort of helps me understand what went wrong with it. So… even if you're a professional painter (I am not!!!) this text might well be a great addition to your art library.grannybee0628
