1. People Solve Problems: The Power Of Every Person, Every Day, Every Problem [Book]

Product Details:
Every person in every function of every organization is involved in solving problems. they show up in your email inbox, in meetings, in your own work. they are strategic and tactical, mundane and breakthrough, easy and difficult. most organizations want to, and need to, improve their people's problem-solving efforts, and so they offer them tools, templates, and training. yet this is not where the leverage for impact is found. building on that start, people solve problems is built on four primary domains. these capabilities are tool agnostic, equally applicable to any chosen problem-solving method or no method at all. this includes a wide range of capabilities from creating problem statements to integrating intuition into problem solving. these chapters outline the culture needed in the organization or the personal behaviors you must master to be successful in problem solving. the behaviors explored range from deliberately learning through problem solving to building transparency, vulnerability, and trust. problem solving is unlike other practices, training is incredibly insufficient, and coaching is the major driver of success. this section addresses the why, who, when, where, and of course the important how of coaching. the leader must be the architect of their problem-solving systems, a shaper of culture, and a framer of problems. problem-solving effectiveness is critical to success for both the problems you already know about and those you have not yet experienced. people solve problems will you help you, and those you lead, to be more effective now and in the future.

2. The Art Of Problem Solving: The Basics [Book]

Product Details:
The art of problem solving, volume 1, is the classic problem solving textbook used by many successful mathcounts programs, and have been an important building block for students who, like the authors, performed well enough on the american mathematics contest series to qualify for the math olympiad summer program which trains students for the united states international math olympiad team. volume 1 is appropriate for students just beginning in math contests. mathcounts and novice high school students particularly have found it invaluable. although the art of problem solving is widely used by students preparing for mathematics competitions, the book is not just a collection of tricks. the emphasis on learning and understanding methods rather than memorizing formulas enables students to solve large classes of problems beyond those presented in the book. speaking of problems, the art of problem solving, volume 1, contains over 500 examples and exercises culled from such contests as mathcounts, the mandelbrot competition, the amc tests, and arml. full solutions (not just answers!) are available for all the problems in the solution manual. – publisher.

Reviews:
This is a very easy to read book on some of the techniques that can be used for problem framing. It might've been helpful if perhaps Thomas could add how to design and run a problem framing workshop. That said, there are a lot of gems in this, good starting book for problem framing.kiwijinxter

4. Problem Solving Strategies: Crossing The River With Dogs : And Other Mathematical Adventures [Book]

Product Details:
Problem solving strategies crossing the river with dogs and other mathematical adventures why teach a course in problem solving? the nctm principles andstandards state that problem solving should be integrated throughout all courses and grade levels. for example, guess-and-check is a natural strategy to apply in algebra. advanced math students often use finite differences to study functions and sequences. and drawing a diagram and using physical representations are commonly employed strategies in many contexts. however, many students never encounter valuable strategies such as matrix logic or unit analysis. and in content-crowded math classes, few students get the concentrated practice or time necessary to fully develop their problem-solving skills. by taking a semester course in problem solving, students can master a multitude of strategies while developing confidence in their problem-solving abilities. your students will be better prepared to meet the challenges of school and life by taking this course.

Product Details:
Problem-solving strategies is a unique collection of competition problems from over twenty major national and international mathematical competitions for high school students. the discussion of problem solving strategies is extensive. it is written for trainers and participants of contests of all levels up to the highest level: imo, tournament of the towns, and the noncalculus parts of the putnam competition. it will appeal to high school teachers conducting a mathematics club who need a range of simple to complex problems and to those instructors wishing to pose a "problem of the week", "problem of the month", and "research problem of the year" to their students, thus bringing a creative atmosphere into their classrooms with continuous discussions of mathematical problems. this volume is a must-have for instructors wishing to enrich their teaching with some interesting non-routine problems and for individuals who are just interested in solving difficult and challenging problems. each chapter starts with typical examples illustrating the central concepts and is followed by a number of carefully selected problems and their solutions. most of the solutions are complete, but some merely point to the road leading to the final solution. very few problems have no solutions. readers interested in increasing the effectiveness of the book can do so by working on the examples in addition to the problems thereby increasing the number of problems to over 1300. in addition to being a valuable resource of mathematical problems and solution strategies, this volume is the most complete training book on the market.

8. Problem-Solving Through Problems [Book]

Product Details:
The purpose of this book is to isolate and draw attention to the most important problem-solving techniques typically encountered in undergradu ate mathematics and to illustrate their use by interesting examples and problems not easily found in other sources. each section features a single idea, the power and versatility of which is demonstrated in the examples and reinforced in the problems. the book serves as an introduction and guide to the problems literature (e.g., as found in the problems sections of undergraduate mathematics journals) and as an easily accessed reference of essential knowledge for students and teachers of mathematics. the book is both an anthology of problems and a manual of instruction. it contains over 700 problems, over one-third of which are worked in detail. each problem is chosen for its natural appeal and beauty, but primarily to provide the context for illustrating a given problem-solving method. the aim throughout is to show how a basic set of simple techniques can be applied in diverse ways to solve an enormous variety of problems. whenever possible, problems within sections are chosen to cut across expected course boundaries and to thereby strengthen the evidence that a single intuition is capable of broad application. each section concludes with "additional examples" that point to other contexts where the technique is appropriate.

18. The Pigman's Handbook Of Problem Solving [Book]

Product Details:
This comprehensive book, which is written by an acknowledged expert, is essential reading for all those responsible for the achievement of high levels of output from pig units. those charged with identifying the causes of low productivity and the implementation of remedial measures will find this clearly written volume invaluable. focusing on the complexity of accurately identifying the real causes of performance problems, the book emphasizes the importance of realistically appraising all the available evidence, including pig unit data and observation, before reaching firm conclusions. the author discusses all the main performance issues that commonly affect pig enterprises: for example, low litter sizes, high levels of stillborn pigs, high post-weaning mortality rates, slow growth rates, low feed intakes, and high feed conversion rates. he analyses each problem in detail at every stage and examines a range of possibilities before guiding the reader towards the most likely cause and the most appropriate course of action. in the context of the general animal health and nutrition, he indentifies related issues and recommends when it is appropriate to consult specialists in these fields. author: gerry brent began his career in pig production as a pedigree-herd stockman before moving into agricultural education. he became the manager of the national agricultural centre's pig demonstration unit and then embarked on a career in consultancy and pig unit management. he eventually returned to agricultural education and became one of the founders of modern pig industry training in the uk. gerry is the author of three other textbooks, including the pigman's handbook [farming press] a companion to this publication, and has contributed to the production of training dvds released by the british pig executive [bpex]. he was the recipient of the david black award for services to the pig industry in 2004. illustrations colour photographs throughout

20. The Art And Craft Of Mathematical Problem Solving [Book]
Product Details:
Professor paul zeitz conducts you through scores of problems, at all levels of difficulty. zeitz is a firm believer that mathematical problem solving is an important skill that can be nurtured in practically everyone. these are not mathematical exercises. instead, problems are questions that you initially have no idea how to answer. a problem by its very nature requires exploration, resourcefulness, and adventure– and a rigorous proof is less important than no-holds-barred investigation.
