2. From Gutenberg To Google: The History Of Our Future [Book]

Product Details:
Today's changes may be new and may be happening faster than ever before. the first big network revolution was the invention of movable-type printing in the fifteenth century. this book, its millions of predecessors, and even such broad trends as the reformation, the renaissance, and the multiple scientific revolutions of the past 500 years would not have been possible without that one invention. the second revolution came with the invention of the telegraph early in the nineteenth century. never before had people been able to communicate over long distances faster than a horse could travel. along with the development of the world's first high-speed network–the railroad–the telegraph upended centuries of stability and literally redrew the map of the world.wheeler puts these past revolutions into the perspective of today, when rapid-fire changes in networking are upending the nature of work, personal privacy, education, the media, and nearly every other aspect of modern life. but he doesn't leave it there. outlining what's next, he describes how artificial intelligence, virtual reality, blockchain, and the need for cybersecurity are laying the foundation for a third network revolution.
3. Gutenberg [Book]

Product Details:
Named “man of the millennium” in 1999, johannes gutenberg was the creator of one of the most influential and revolutionary inventions in europe’s history: a printing press with mechanical movable type. this development sparked the printing revolution, which is regarded as the milestone of the second millennium and represents one of the central contributions in the turn to modernity. his printing press came to play a key role in the development of the renaissance, the reformation, and the age of enlightenment, providing the material foundation for the modern knowledge-based economy and the spread of learning to the masses. his invention revolutionized the way that information is shared and broadened the boundaries of who has access to written knowledge. paving the way for bibliophiles of today, the gutenberg bible of 1454 remains one of the most famous books in history. gutenberg’s technical innovations remained unrivalled for almost 350 years, until industrialization of the printing industry and the digital revolution built on the advances that he began, increasing the rate at which information is spread. written by the leading expert on gutenberg, füssel’s biography brings together high academic standards and thorough historical details in a highly readable text that conveys everything you need to know about the man who changed printing forever.

Reviews:
The characters are engaging; the situations they get into are both surprising and believable. Like many good novels, the story grows with each scene as the reader learns more about Don and Rosie. Nothing is static. While the boy meets girl and falls in love is a predictable plot, the how, the who and the where are fun and new. The story has no loose ends, so I didn't bother to get the two sequels to The Rosie Project. Nevertheless, a great book you won't regret reading.Nerd63
Not normally something I'd pick up, but I was googling books with interesting and diverse characters and THE ROSIE PROJECT was on several lists. And….I loved it. Don is a character I liked, laughed with, bit my finger nails over and finally grew to love. I so enjoyed the first person writing that put me up close and personal with the inner life of someone with Aspergers. While I know Don is just a character, he gave me lots to think about and made me question what's so wonderful about being normal. I'll give my heart to most any book that can do that! Beautiful read. Throughly recommend.
This story starts off very real. I have met many individuals who struggle to say the right thing in social settings and are very awkward. In some regards, it seems like a caricature of people I know. There were times I laughed out loud. This is rare for me. There were some predictable parts in the book but they were overcome by the humor and heart warming story. I found myself looking forward to reading it. I also read Rosie Effect. The first book was more enjoyable because the nuances of Don, the lead character were more of a surprise. A great book to read before bed. If you are a scientist or in engineering, I think you will relate best to this story.mykitty
7. Nothing Like It In The World: The Men Who Built The Transcontinental Railroad 1863-1869 [Book]

Product Details:
In this account of an unprecedented feat of engineering, vision, and courage, stephen e. ambrose offers a historical successor to his universally acclaimed undaunted courage, which recounted the explorations of the west by lewis and clark. nothing like it in the world is the story of the men who built the transcontinental railroad — the investors who risked their businesses and money; the enlightened politicians who understood its importance; the engineers and surveyors who risked, and lost, their lives; and the irish and chinese immigrants, the defeated confederate soldiers, and the other laborers who did the backbreaking and dangerous work on the tracks. – the union had won the civil war and slavery had been abolished, but abraham lincoln, who was an early and constant champion of railroads, would not live to see the great achievement. in ambrose's hands, this enterprise, with its huge expenditure of brainpower, muscle, and sweat, comes to life. – the u.s. government pitted two companies — the union pacific and the central pacific railroads — against each other in a race for funding, encouraging speed over caution. this was the last great building project to be done mostly by hand: excavating dirt, cutting through ridges, filling gorges, blasting tunnels through mountains. – at its peak, the workforce — primarily chinese on the central pacific, irish on the union pacific — approached the size of civil war armies, with as many as fifteen thousand workers on each line. the union pacific was led by thomas "doc" durant, oakes ames, and oliver ames, with grenville dodge — america's greatest railroad builder — as chief engineer. the central pacific was led by california's "big four": leland stanford, collis huntington, charles crocker, and mark hopkins. the surveyors, the men who picked the route, were latter-day lewis and clark types who led the way through the wilderness, living off buffalo, deer, elk, and antelope. – in building a railroad, there is only one decisive spot — the end of the track. nothing like this great work had been seen in the world when the last spike, a golden one, was driven in at promontory summit, utah, in 1869, as the central pacific and the union pacific tracks were joined. – ambrose writes with power and eloquence about the brave men — the famous and the unheralded, ordinary men doing the extraordinary — who accomplished the spectacular feat that made the continent into a nation.

Reviews:
If you even remotely like anything about railroading you will really appreciate this book. Ambrose's research is outstand. Considering the epic job the men that built the transcontinental railroad undertook it is amazing it ever happened especially considering the technology of the day. Ambrose's account of this is truely outstanding, you can almost feel what the men faced as Ambrose's recounts the tail. As a side not there is a great history lesson and a side the you never realized the civil war played in what became the transcontinental railroad. I would rate this better than excellent if there was such a choice to select.md-11mike
The story behind this enormous project is very interesting, lots of pictures to help you see the many challenges.private0524
The book is informative and detailed. It is packed with the history of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific when the U.S. transcontinental railroad was built from 1863-1869. One can truly understand and feel the muscle power it took to built such a road across the U.S. The terrain was tough and life was hostile in open country especially dealing with the Indians. Incredible. Ambrose captures the moment very well.806abram14

12. Virgil Abloh. Nike. Icons [Book]

Product Details:
In 2016, sportswear manufacturer nike and fashion designer virgil abloh joined forces to create a sneaker collection celebrating 10 of the oregon-based company's most iconic shoes. with their project the ten–which reimagined icons like air jordan 1, air max 90, air force 1, and air presto, among others–they reinvigorated sneaker culture. – virgil abloh's designs offer deep insights into engineering ingenuity and burst with cultural cachet. drawing on the genius of the original shoe using lettering, ironic labels, collage, and sculpting techniques, abloh played with language and sculptural elements to construct new meaning. inspired by the wit of dadaism, architectural theory, and avant-garde happenings, he analyzed what makes each shoe iconic and deconstructed it into an artistic assemblage, making each shoe into a piece of industrial design, a readymade sculpture, and a wearable all at once. – icons traces abloh's investigative, creative process through documentation of the prototypes, original text messages from abloh to nike designers, and treasures from the nike archives. – tm c/o nike collection its own unique touch. his deconstructive vocabulary is reflected in the swiss binding, which showcases an open spine and discloses the production of the book. – the book documents abloh's cooperative way of working and reaffirms the power of print. for its design nike and abloh partnered with the acclaimed london-based design studio zak group. together they conceived a two-part compendium, equal parts catalog and conceptual toolbox. the first part of the book presents a visual culture of sneakers while a lexicon in the second part defines the key people, places, objects, ideas, materials, and scenes from which the project grew. texts by nike's nicholas schonberger, writer troy patterson, curator and historian glenn adamson, and virgil abloh himself frame the collaborative work within fashion and design history. a foreword by hiroshi fujiwara places the project within the historical continuum of nike collaborators.

17. Gutenberg (Pre-Order)
Product Details:
Gutenberg is a mid-weight strategy game taking place in europe in the 15th century. each player takes the role of the printing pioneer trying to build their wealth and fame by developing their production capacity and gaining the support of patrons. through bidding for specific actions the players develop their printing workshops, acquire new fonts, inks and decorations. the unique system of rotating gears allows players to combine bonuses and earn large amounts of points. the game lasts six rounds and the player with the most points at the end wins.
Reviews:
I've played this solo and with 4 players. Not too cumbersome to teach others how to play. Love that it comes with tuck boxes to store all the pieces in. Playtime is not too long and is about an hour and a half with 4 people. Like that the board is two sided depending on the number of players. The bidding mechanism is great on who gets what actions to take and have first pick. Just as a note: There is one combination of printer bonus action and cog wheels that could break the game. If you have the bonus ability each turn to have the 2X on your cog wheel and the wheel that gives you victory points depending on the round you are in, can really generate a bunch of points for one person especially at the end of the game. One person got that in our game and scored 8. then 10 and then 12 points just from that without any effort and add to that completing in print orders.Charlene R
Fabulous game. Quick to pick up and absolutely amazing timeDonald D
Enjoyed this and the mechanism for turn-taking is cool and different. The typeface pieces are cool and this plays fast.Christopher P

Reviews:
Even better than I had expected. I absolutely love how it is organized too. It has sections for different types of activities. Some that take a little prep/planning, and others that you can do on the fly. I told my girls (9 & 11) that when they get stumped on what to do, just grab it for some inspiration. We have had it for two weeks now, and it is already becoming a go-to for them. I would definitely recommend this for others. Actually, I ordered two more for birthday gifts.Aimee E.
This is just what I was looking for. I purchased it for a 10-year-old for a school's-out present. Before I sent it to her, I looked clear through the book and marked some of my favorite activities with a sticky-note to let her know I'd found some favorites. A good range of activities, yet many will require the participation of an adult. I would have loved such a book when I was a child.Carol H.
I bought this book as a gift for a friend that spends a lot of time with her young grandsons. i read through it first, and it is spectacular…projects of every sort, inside and outside, and they are adaptable to suit several ages. In addition, that are lots of thoughtful things relating to psycho-social stages of developments, learning to get along with others, affirming thoughts on handling difficult situations…. Highlights has always excelled in encouraging self esteem, curiosity and growth in young people and this book exemplifies that.Margaret P.

Reviews:
I read this via my public library. I liked it so much , I purchased it for my book shelf. We as a species are on autopilot and this book explains why. Humans understand most body systems and their operations. Very little is known of our minds and the difference between it and our brains. After reading this book, your daily thoughts and desires will take on a whole new outlook.2knives1*
Psychology book in which common sense is presented as psychobabble and jargon then dispensed as science and new discoveries or "insights" into the way people think. For example the presentation of "prospect theory", in which someone's decision making process between two variables is found to be a function of what they are comparing. Such as the choice between getting a million dollars for sure or a 25% chance of getting four million, is found to be different for someone who already has ten million, compared to someone who has nothing. This can be summed up in the simple common sense phrase "It's all relative", with no need to research or explain or needlessly develop "new" behavioural theories. Then the equally absurd "theory induced blindness" in which a researcher develops a theory and can't see things any other way. A classic case of someone not being able to see the wood for the trees. Even the main premise of the book as referred to in it's title is simply about instinctive (fast) and considered (slow) thinking. It goes on and on in the same vain for over four hundred pages without offering a single new insight which could not be encapsulated by a simple common sense couplet or well known idiom or proverb. This cannot be disguised by the author's chatty and self-effacing writing style in which his familiarity with us and occasional pretension of doubt of his own theories is another manipulative tool used so we can forgive our "friend" for his true but rehashed drivel and jargonisation. Not only that, but such insights, rather than being of use to humanity, or adding to the sum of human knowledge, are useful only to the worst and most cynical and untrustworthy type of manipulative psychologists; the marketeers, advertisers and salesmen.cgodbol
This book is often quoted and rightly so. It's a great insight into how we think and how we draw conclusions. Don't think of it as a text book; it's been slightly dumbed down to make it very readable.Pietro
