As a pure mathematician I have lectured on the theory of Hilbert spaces for many years and known of its relevance to Quantum Mechanics; after all their theory was formalised by von Neumann in his 1930's book on QM. However until reading Susskind's book I never properly understood the essence of the connection. It is a beautifully executed exposition penetrating to the very essence of QM, accessible to anyone with a knowledge of basic calculus and the algebra of vectors and matrices and even much of what is required of these is nicely explained ( background in Hilbert spaces is certainly not a prerequisite). Like a good novel, "Quantum Mechanics: the Theoretical Mimimum" constantly drew me on as I worked through it. I know of no better introduction for anyone wishing to understand QM at anything other than the superficial level of most popular accounts.

I bought this book for a gift to a little girl. I've read it first before wrapping it. The contents in the books were arranged and written in a way that wouldn't make you bored. He has tremendous respect from the international physics community in the field of quantum mechanics, and has written a wonderful book for the 2020 general audience. It explains the field of quantum mechanics with no equations, just well thought out discussion. Of course this includes the physics background beginning with the Greeks, and up through Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, Maxwell, and the "classical physics" up to 1910. Einstein's relevance gets discussed, including his Nobel prize for his first quantum mechanical discovery, photons. The focus of the book is on quantum mechanics development, over the last 100 years and to-date. It's knowns, unknowns, and competing points of view are all compared, where he presents his own good conclusions. I cannot recommend this book any more highly, for 2020, to the general audience.blinkschulte
