Reviews:
This is one of the best books ever written. Chambers was a true prophet of God. Like the Bible, the truths written in the text are ageless. The book expands on many of the scriptures of the Bible to the deeper spiritual levels. This would not be a book for new Christians, but for Christians who have walked with God for a while and are seeking to become one with Him. If you are serious about making a full commitment to God, this is the book for you.ralphandbeau2011
It can be a great QT book for people who can only spare 5 minutes a day. Though it is a short page read, it is quite profound in a simple kind of way. For a new believer, I think this book will help him/her understand the "relationship" factor between the reader and the Christ. For the seasoned believer who may have lost their way because of doctrine and therefore, it has caused an heartache, this book can help you feel Jesus the way you first met Him.ablelife
This book gets you closer to God and helps you understand what a relationship with God truly is. Chambers was a man of God in a deep and profound way. Charles Stanley said that this book was one that had the greatest impact on his life after the Bible. Chambers makes you want the deep relationship he has with God, He inspires and motivates you to be a different person. When I first read this book years ago, I marked passages and had ? there. I didn't "get" those things, but I knew I wanted to. Over the years, I have read and reread this book and the ? go away and I am blessed.ibsmiley

4. A History Of The Bible: The Story Of The World's Most Influential Book [Book]
Product Details:
A literary history of our most influential book of all time, by an oxford scholar and anglican priest in our culture, the bible is monolithic: it is a collection of books that has been unchanged and unchallenged since the earliest days of the christian church. the idea of the bible as "holy scripture," a non-negotiable authority straight from god, has prevailed in western society for some time. and while it provides a firm foundation for centuries of christian teaching, it denies the depth, variety, and richness of this fascinating text. in a history of the bible, john barton argues that the bible is not a prescription to a complete, fixed religious system, but rather a product of a long and intriguing process, which has inspired judaism and christianity, but still does not describe the whole of either religion. barton shows how the bible is indeed an important source of religious insight for jews and christians alike, yet argues that it must be read in its historical context–from its beginnings in myth and folklore to its many interpretations throughout the centuries. it is a book full of narratives, laws, proverbs, prophecies, poems, and letters, each with their own character and origin stories. barton explains how and by whom these disparate pieces were written, how they were canonized (and which ones weren't), and how they were assembled, disseminated, and interpreted around the world–and, importantly, to what effect. ultimately, a history of the bible argues that a thorough understanding of the history and context of its writing encourages religious communities to move away from the bible's literal wording–which is impossible to determine–and focus instead on the broader meanings of scripture.

In this fascinating, stimulating book, Karen Armstrong looks at the centuries from 800 BC to 300 BC, when great strides in religious belief were made. It was the period of time that included Buddha, Socrates, Confucius and Jeremiah. Full of insight and history, this is a highly original book that adherents of any (or even no) tradition can get a lot out of. Thought provoking, highly recommended.

7. A Little History Of Religion [Book]
Product Details:
For curious readers young and old, a rich and colorful history of religion from humanity's earliest days to our own contentious times in an era of hardening religious attitudes and explosive religious violence, this book offers a welcome antidote. richard holloway retells the entire history of religion–from the dawn of religious belief to the twenty-first century–with deepest respect and a keen commitment to accuracy. writing for those with faith and those without, and especially for young readers, he encourages curiosity and tolerance, accentuates nuance and mystery, and calmly restores a sense of the value of faith. ranging far beyond the major world religions of judaism, islam, christianity, buddhism, and hinduism, holloway also examines where religious belief comes from, the search for meaning throughout history, today's fascinations with scientology and creationism, religiously motivated violence, hostilities between religious people and secularists, and more. holloway proves an empathic yet discerning guide to the enduring significance of faith and its power from ancient times to our own.
Reviews:
This book contains some interesting facts and insights, but it is not a history of religion. More, it is a history of christianity, yet it is not even that because it is, overwhelmingly, superficial. The author has, at best, given me a taste for more information about the history and origin of religions, but he is clearly not the author I will go to in future.Nemo
Nicely written and relatively unbiased. Recommended reading for young people.welucas_0
8. The Rise And Triumph Of The Modern Self: Cultural Amnesia, Expressive Individualism, And The Road To Sexual Revolution [Book]
Product Details:
"carl trueman explains modernity to the church, with depth, clarity, and force. since the landmark obergefell v. hodges supreme court decision in 2015, sexual identity has dominated both public discourse and cultural trends–yet no historical phenomenon is its own cause. from augustine to marx, various views and perspectives have contributed to the modern understanding of the self. in this timely book, carl trueman analyzes the development of the sexual revolution as a symptom–rather than the cause–of the human search for identity. trueman surveys the past, brings clarity to the present, and gives guidance for the future as christians navigate the culture in humanity's ever-changing quest for identity.

A must read to understand the degrading of our culture.alyancey
One of the greatest existential questions that is no longer asked is, "who am I?" because we are so distracted by the overload of information and misinformation that bombard us about our identity as human beings. Yet deep down, our lost soul demands that answer. Carl Trueman's book, "The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self" charts the course that brought us to the point where we are today, where we are coerced into questioning a biological, psychological, philosophical, physiological, existential, spiritual, scientific truth that we are born this way: male and female. Young people are taught that such a fundamental statement of truth is hateful, and should be shut down, not knowing that to deny such truths is to deny their very own worth. People are conditioned to get irrational and angry about the importance of knowing what it means to be male or female without having any good reason. We didn't get to the point where a statement like "I identify as a woman and therefore I am a woman" is commonly accepted as the norm in just the past 25 years. In fact, Carl Trueman explains it took over 300 years. Not bad cramming 300 years of history of psychological thought into a 400-page book! Carl explains how idea-viruses from Rousseau, Marx, Darwin, Nietzsche, Freud, etc collectively led us on a journey to change the very nature of the "self". It is not an easy read as it's written in a slightly academic bent, so I can imagine his newer book, "Strange New World" will be much more accessible. I would've given this a 4.5 stars but just left it at 5 because the content was spot on. Personally for me, this is a key point (amongst others) that I got – I'll put it this way simplistically: if you can't kill God the Creator, at least kill of His creation, then people will forget God Himself. Highly recommended if you're curious about the history of the development of the modern "self" (I read this as part of my preparation for a sermon I was preaching, Born This Way: Male and Female). If you're worried about getting through this, perhaps start with Carl Trueman's newer book which is purported to be easier to digest (I'll be reading it sometime), "Strange New World". Highly recommended.kiwijinxter

Reviews:
I absolutely love Ruth Chou Simons newest book!! Beholding and Becoming is a work of art, overflowing with Ruth’s soulful, encouraging words and illustrations that capture your heart and soul. Her faith-filled wisdom, stunning artistry, quotes, and use of Biblical stories and verses blend together flawlessly to create a beautiful and engaging experience for the reader. The author bares her soul with honest vulnerability as she shares relatable everyday struggles and sheds the light of Jesus on them. The book is about becoming, and being transformed, by beholding Jesus, living life Christ-centered, and worshiping Him in the amazing and not so amazing details of our everyday lives. I find her lyrical writing to be convicting and soul-awakening. Ruth’s words had a profound effect on me-she opened the floodgates to my weary soul. She gently spoke life to the places in my soul that felt wilted and overgrown. God knew I needed to read the words written on the pages of this amazing book. This is one of my favorite quotes by Ruth Chou Simons in Chapter 13, God’s Mercy When Things Seem Unfair: “His grace causes us to see ourselves truthfully: undeserving of His relentless love and lavish generosity. His great mercy fills the cracks of our unbelief and-when received-allows little room for bitterness and discontentment to spring up.” What a powerful message! I was enthralled by her beautiful artwork, captivated by her writing, and blessed by the powerful truths she shares. Each page, each delicate flower, the colors, and placement within the chapters heightens the reader’s experience. The author’s passion and loving faith are evident in every detail. I will be reading Beholding and Becoming daily, to inspire and lift my spirits by lifting my gaze to God, to draw closer and glorify Him in my everyday details, and to remind me how much I am loved. I loved Beholding and Becoming and I believe everyone that reads it will feel the same. Ruth Chou Simons desire and passion to draw others closer to God, to live and breathe our faith day in and day out is apparent throughout her beautifully written and illustrated book. It’s a gift rich in truths that open your eyes and soul to Jesus’ lavish love. I feel so blessed by having experienced Beholding and Becoming.susam49
Beholding Becoming is a beautiful and encouraging book to read! I have Ruth's early books, and this one surely didn't disappoint! The watercolor illustrations are delightful, soothing, and easy on the eyes. Each section offers words of encouragement for the daily grind. There are no dramatic stories, no guilt smacking narratives, no "I have it all solved" declarations – just gentle words of understanding, relatability, and achievable, personal challenges to grow as individuals. I found myself laughing with Ruth and nodding my head with understanding as she related short stories of her own personal growth experiences. Devotional books that I have read or tried to read were impersonal, cliché filled, lacking depth and soul or left me closing the book feeling guilty or beyond hope of restoration or redemption in some areas. I found myself challenged to behold my Savior and scriptures unhurriedly, and to give myself more grace as I continue in my process of becoming. Consider this excerpt from the book: "God is the Creator; you are the created. God is great; you are not. Does that chafe or relieve you? How you answer that question determines who you are becoming. In our social-media-crazed culture, everyone can be a star. It's so seemingly within reach that smallness feels unacceptable. …It's impossible for someone to continually behold and be dazzled by personal power and greatness while attributing all greatness and glory to God. The two can't coexist in the same heart. We either become molded by our sense of self-promotion or shaped by our understanding of God's preeminence." Such a fresh perspective on humility. We hear the word "humility" so often that it is easy to gloss over. This is confronting, yet gentle and thought provoking. I heartily recommend this timeless book!Maylady
Beholding and Becoming online review As always, Ruth Chou Simons, artist and author behind GraceLaced, makes much of God while literally and figuratively painting a picture of our journey to becoming whom God made us to be. She partners beautiful artwork with refreshing words that are saturated with the truth of the gospel in the everyday. “How we go about doing the next thing has everything to do with what we believe about what we’ve been given to do and who gives the next breath in which to do it.” Through the examples of everyday scenarios, we are reminded that no moment is too ordinary to be used by God. He has placed you where you are with what work He would have you to do so that you may bring Him glory. Beholding and Becoming is an encouragement towards growth, not berating or judgmental. This is a great book for personal use, but would also make an excellent gift for the art lover and anyone desiring to strengthen their relationship with the Lord.Becca

Reviews:
This is an outstanding book! I believe it is the best book I have read reviewing the previously written material on the subject and relating it not only to Christianity but other religions of the world. I have read extensively on the subject since Dr. Raymond Moody's book, "Life After Life" to the present time and recognized the majority of the authors and books he covers. I believe that John Burke's background as an engineer turned pastor adds to his unique analysis of the subject. I highlighted my hard cover book for later review and believe the book is important enough that that I purchased several more soft cover books for friends! Additionally, it is well written and a pleasure to read.BRUCE
Best book I have ever read concerning NDEs. It is a compilation of other studies with a Biblical perspective. It should be very compelling to anyone who reads it that our physical death is not the end but the beginning and how we choose to live our lives is of great importance. A must read for anyone with questions about their future.kendallma
This is the most complete book I have ever read about heaven. I had been led to read books about heaven just 3 months before my husband passed away. The near death experiences of others gave an amazing glimpse into heaven. Imagine Heaven tells about some of those people's experiences and uses Scripture to back them up. So comforting to know where my husband is.dardan917

This is the second one I purchased. The first one was for me. This one was to be sent to my friend for her birthday. When it arrived, I opened the package to be sure that it was the book that I had a copy of. It was, however, when I opened the book, it was very difficult to read. The pages seemed like they were a cheap xerox copy of the original. The pages are bleached white, whereas my original book has pages that have a soothing slightly yellow tint to them. The new book's print is so faded and faint that I had to get my reading glasses to be able to see the words comfortably. I sent the book to her, anyway. I hope she is not as picky as I am with the ease of readability that a book should have. I did not tell her that my copy has much darker print that is much easier on the eyes. Overall, I am not impressed with the quality of this print.jhhome
