I definitely recommend this to someone who wants to go to therapy but can’t because of insurance or other reasons. If you’re dedicated, this book will help. At least a little. I go to therapy and I’m also on a DBT group (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) and about 98% of this book is things I’ve learned throughout my journey. I bought this recently because of a lot of trauma the past few years and I feel like I need to do something to help myself too. And this book is great! As a therapist of over 20 years, I am thrilled to have this book in my toolbox. It’s based on science but is in no way technical or dry. Quite the opposite – it’s conversational and funny. Most important, it includes strategies that work. Too many self help books say you have to change your thinking before you can start to make real change in your life. This is false. We don’t have direct control of our thoughts or feelings. In fact, for many of us, it’s the opposite – thoughts and feelings control US! We get stuck in our heads and thus stuck in our lives. Just knowing this is not enough, however, and what Bonior does is teach her reader HOW to get out from under the control of thoughts and feelings. This is an amazing book! when i found this book it called out to me. it was hard to put down. Finally, here is writing about the history of the PTSD diagnosis and how it came to be. And the compassion and caring that these psychiatrists and therapists and researchers express for their patients/clients is very touching. To me, it's as good a book as "The Road Less Traveled" by M. Scott Peck, MD. Easy to read, lots of case histories that actually make sense, and are to the point, and the history of research into causation and the relationship between early childhood trauma, and how the brain adapts in order to "function" after it interprets the trauma.
