Reviews:
I work at Barnes and noble and this was one of the advanced reader edition. I loved it! How it depicts how it feels to be here in the u.s. illegally was pretty accurate. Just the beginning with saying how they treated her at the immigration office, is something I heard of so many times hopefully this helps others feel what immigrants feel. But aside from that I love the whole story of how they fall in love 💛 100 percent recommend it
A book about realistic and kind of impossible romance. It really is not only about love and high school crushes, you can really connect with some of the personal problems the charcacter are going through. It can get a little sad at times so I wouldn't call it a light read.barbara.p

Reviews:
"Strength must be seized." I needed this message this week. If was being truly critical, I'd rate this a 4.5 only because out of 3 (arguably major) plot twists/reveals, I was able to predict 2 of them quite early – but I'm not being critical, because this didn't detract from my enjoyment of the writing. The ending is also a bit cliffhanger-y and I wanted some more resolution but obviously, this didn't affect me because this story actually made me slow down and repeat my listening of the audiobook and re-read lines in the version on my e-reader to highlight certain quotes and savor the narrative experience. I stretched out reading this over 3 days when I certainly could have finished it in 2. Upon finishing it, I pre-ordered the second book, forthcoming in January, We Free the Stars . I bought it NOW and it comes out in JANUARY 2021. I rarely ever do this. Most of what I read I first borrow from the library, and then decide to purchase if I truly love it. Plus the romance here is done SO well – I love these characters. They're believable and so is their love – even if they won't admit it yet in words to each other! This to me, is a love story between two introverts and I adore that. There are a lot of familiar elements I love in this story, but that’s precisely why I enjoyed it. Although in my mind there are winks and nods to other YA/fantasy/romance tales, this one is written solidly, it feels delightful to see it unfold. Faizal does a MASTERFUL enemies-to-lovers slowburn. This story is so lush and mysterious, the characters and the setting and the magic, all of it.theprofreads
I was super fortunate to receive an advanced reader copy of We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal from Fierce Reads at C2E2! HUGE thank you to Fierce Reads for this amazing arc! First I have to mention the absolutely gorgeous arc cover of We Hunt the Flame. I love the official release cover, but look at how stunning the arc edition is! I love it so much! Much like the cover, We Hunt the Flame is a gorgeous masterpiece! We Hunt the Flame is an incredible debut from Hafsah Faizal. I loved everything about this story and I can’t wait to read more from her. We Hunt the Flame is an epic fantasy adventure full of political intrigue, mystery, a slow-burn romance, and feminism. It is set in a beautifully created world and narrated by two main characters, Zafira “The Huntress” and Nasir “The Prince of Death.” Both leads are written so well — they each have a history and backstory that shows the reader how they have become the Huntress and the Prince of Death. Faizal was able to do this without information dumping! Zafira and Nasir both experience huge growth and development throughout their journey. They both must confront their emotions, past traumas, and inner demons. The journey changes both for the better which brings them closer. I liked that the change wasn’t immediate or easy. Zafira and Nasir truly had to go on a journey – both physically and emotionally. Side note – the cast of side characters was also so good! Each character was very well done and added to the story. The story takes place in the world of Arawiya. There is a ton of history and culture in this world, but as I said earlier, it felt natural and not like information dumping. Arawiya is a nation made up of five caliphates (or states). Magic has disappeared from Arawiya and left a curse throughout the land, including the forest of darkness known as the Arz and the island of Sharr. Although it is a place, Sharr was a character on its own. It was all encompassing and had its own personality and desires. I haven’t read a lot of books where the setting/world is an actual character. It really elevated the story and showed how talented Faizal’s writing is. I can’t get over the writing of We Hunt the Flame. Hafsah Faizal is able to create lyrical, poetic, and enchanting words that flow perfectly together to craft a wholly original story. Faizal’s beautiful writing is incredibly lush and descriptive. This world and setting is super detailed and intricate, but still completely captivating. The intense detail didn’t seem overwhelming and actually added to the beautiful setting. I truly saw the world that Faizal created. I was on the journey with Zafira and Nasir. My ONLY complaint/suggestion is that a glossary would be nice. I did need to pause to look up some of the Arabic words in order to better understand some scenes. I can’t say enough good things about We Hunt the Flame. I feel like a lot of YA fantasy blends together lately, but not Hafsah Faizal’s masterpiece. We Hunt the Flame starts off a bit slower, but kept me pulled in the entire time. The ending is full of reveals, twists, and cliffhangers. I cannot wait for the rest of the series! I was given a copy of this title, free, en exchange for my honest opinion. his is another book that talks about a white police officer shooting a black male. But make no mistake, it is also a book that stands out on its own. You have probably already heard of this book, as it came out and took the world by storm. I am not one that ever feels that a book deserves a bunch of hype, but in this case I can understand it. It is good for so many reasons, but it is not a perfect book. (I have yet to find one that is.) Starr is at party in her neighborhood when shots are fired. Her old friend, Khalil is there with her and quickly gets her out and safely away. While heading to her house or her father's store, they are pulled over by a white officer for a busted headlight. While Starr is mentally reciting the lessons of how to behave when pulled over by the police, it is apparent that Khalil did not receive those lessons. As the police is making his way to the car, Starr does ask if there is any drugs in the car. What could have simply been a routine stop quickly escalates into a homicide. This is due to both Khalil's mouthiness and the officer's fear/prejudice/choice. **With the rising number of shootings, people -black people in particular- have been having conversations with their kids about what to do when you are pulled over by the police? Is it necessary? If you have taught your kids to be respectful of authority then no it's not. Because, regardless of your opinion of the police or your socio-economic circumstance the police are in a position of authority. EVEN IF YOU HAVE DONE NOTHING WRONG. I have been pulled over before and was told that I resembled a suspect that the police were looking for. No I didn't believe them, but I was still respectful. Sometimes, it's not about being right, it's about doing the right thing.** Starr then struggles with how to reconcile what has happened, with the way the world reacts and how the police handle the situation. "Sometimes you can do everything right and things will still go wrong. The key is to never stop doing right." The real power of this book is that through all the devastation and heartache hope remains – it is such a poignant reflection of reality. Thomas does not hold back in any way, and she is demanding of her reader. Completely gripping, challenging, confronting, and incredibly painful at times, this is a book that demands to be read. Aside from this, Thomas is a truly spectacular writer. Her ability to completely immerse the reader (even one who has no real comprehension of life might be like in Garden Heights) is astounding. She writes with real feeling, moving between pain, grief and anger and humour, family dynamics, young love and the monotony of every day with ease. Her ability to inject humour at any moment is both wonderful and disarming.Hannah
5. Scythe [Book]

Product Details:
A time best ya book of all time (2021) two teens must learn the “art of killing” in this printz honor–winning book, the first in a chilling new series from neal shusterman, author of the new york times bestselling unwind dystology.a world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery: humanity has conquered all those things, and has even conquered death. now scythes are the only ones who can end life—and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control. citra and rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe—a role that neither wants. these teens must master the “art” of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own. scythe is the first novel of a thrilling new series by national book award–winning author neal shusterman in which citra and rowan learn that a perfect world comes only with a heavy price.
Reviews:
Shusterman does a fantastic job at characterisation, world – building, and pacing. It is a perfect introduction to the perfectly imperfect Scythe universe as it meticulously discusses the moral quandaries regarding life within a world that has conquered death. Shusterman realistically considers minute details in this world of science – fiction, drawing inspiration from past and present society to manufacture a seemingly perfect, yet stagnant future. Thus, resulting in somewhat dark, but most importantly, thought provoking journey of change which will have you binge-reading the rest of the trilogy and writing a review before you even know it!scionecrosis
Both my husband and I love this book series. We had never heard of the author before and weren't sure about it. Promoted as a teen book, it really is excellent for teens and adults (my restriction is that younger children might find it too disturbing). Extremely well written and compelling. Quite a different story and I think, very thought provoking. This particular copy, I am giving to a friend to enjoy. We have bought the full series. The 3rd and possibly the final book on just came out. It is about death in a world where natural death no longer occurs and how that is made to happen. If that intrigues you, I think you may very well enjoy this book–which is stand alone or you can buy the series. We enjoyed it so much that we have now purchaced more books from this author to read at a later time.stanandcarol
Easily one of the best middle grade books I've read in a while. Neal Shusterman is an amazing writer already so he didn't disappoint. He's created this unique world that is eye-opening and may reveal some of the lengths people would go to to get what they want. You'll also fall in love with the characters that actually seem like they're real and are detailedand in depth. I love this book and this series.lusine.m

This series was a little slow to get going for me, but once it did, I couldn't put it down! This book, the 2nd in the series, has DECKLED EDGES that ARE NOT walmart's fault (eye roll at the other review). I'm not a fan of deckled edges, but it seems the hardcover version of this book is only available that way.Christy829

Reviews:
Very disappointing compared to the first book. The first book had me squealing joy at every chapter, and Crush had me yelling in anger at almost every chapter. Mainly because of where the author went with the love plot. But if it feels like the whole first book was negated with this after I became so invested in the ending from that first book. My heart literally broke for weeks after reading the second book – especially because it felt like the author changed an MC's character wayyyy too much. Really hoping book 3 redeems this and we get our strong initial characters back in the spotlight.Sass
Omg this book is SO GOOD. I haven’t even finished it and it’s my favorite book. The first one was good. It set a good base for the second one. I am sad that I will be done soon(less than 100 pages left). Crush is so good. So much loyalty, intensity, suspense and surprises and I love it. Can’t wait to read Covet, Court, Charm and the Cherish!Felicis
I would recommend this book to anyone. Along with crush to of course. Tracy takes you on an amazing rollercoaster ride of emotions. Were one minute your happy but the next asking what just happened she even makes you cry a little. This world she has created for us to enjoy is my absolute favorite supernatural world. And you should seriously stop what your doing right now and go get your copy of crave and crush and join us at katmere academy. Special thank you to the woman who created this place that connects with so many. This book is a must read.Britt

11. Once Upon A Dream: A Twisted Tale [Book]

Product Details:
What if the sleeping beauty never woke up? once upon a dream marks the second book in a new ya line that reimagines classic disney stories in surprising new ways. it should be simple–a dragon defeated, a slumbering princess in a castle, a prince poised to wake her. but when the prince falls asleep as his lips touch the fair maiden's, it is clear that this fairy tale is far from over. with a desperate fairy's last curse controlling her mind, princess aurora must escape from a different castle of thorns and navigate a dangerously magical landscape–created from her very own dreams. aurora isn't alone–a charming prince is eager to join her quest, and old friends offer their help. but as maleficent's agents follow her every move, aurora struggles to discover who her true allies are and, moreover, who she truly is. time is running out. will the sleeping beauty be able to wake herself up?
Reviews:
Just love this book, the author writes beautifully and with a lot of detail. Filling in the blanks about some of the characters with intricate details. The twists in this tale is what makes this book unique; what if sleeping beauty never did wake up? A must read for anyone who has grown up with Disney movies! Also, I do recommend that anyone who reads this book (even though its he second in the series) do need to consider purchasing the other two titles in the series to complete the set. 5/5 😀blkkat19
This book really is a whirlwind. Taking you from one setting to the next, and the ending *sighs* is absolutely astonishing! But, like most of Braswell's books, the ending is also very open. I gave this book 4.5 stars, because some of the parts can be predictable. This twisted tale absolutely gets your mind running from the start. Guessing theories, ideas, the girl's love life. Also while reading this book: QUESTION. EVERYTHING. Any fairy-tale you thought you knew will be changed only slightly, but at the same time, it will change everything. I mean again: predictable. That's why I believe there needs to be a sequel for some answers to my questions. Now why I believe that it deserves as many stars as I gave it, is the way it is written. Honestly, a book could have a draggy plot line and predictable endings, but if it's written well enough, it lands on my bookshelf. I read the whole book in one day, and it's dark and dreary, so on a good old rainy day, it will keep you company. I recommend this book for anybody ages ten or older. This riveting tale asks one question: What if sleeping beauty never woke up? This book will answer that question, but has you asking many more. I hope you enjoyed my review! -Seattle Noelle, 14STACY

Really, this book is just fantastic. It may be a little boring at the start, but it is really interesting and exciting. I was actually amazed by how breathtaking it was. Originally reviewed on Just Me My Books. The book follows Percy, who ends up vaporising his maths teacher on a trip to a New York museum, and no one seems to notice. When he is expelled from yet another boarding school, his mother treats him to a weekend at the beach, even though it looks like a hurricane is about to descend on them. It's only on the arrival of Percy's friend Grover do they realise something is wrong and that a Minotaur is after Percy. Soon, Percy arrives at Camp Half-Blood and learns that he is a Demigod – half human, half god. After being recognised by his father, one of the three gods who vowed they would not have any more children, Percy finds out he is being blamed for stealing Zeus' master lightning bolt, and so is sent on a quest to retrieve it from the Underworld before the Summer Solstice, in order to prevent war on Mount Olympus. With the help of his Satyr Grove and fellow camper Annabeth, they discover that the gods have more to worry about than Percy being the son of a powerful god, and that Kronos maybe trying to make a comeback.victoria.k
My Appraisal of the book Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief Written by Rick Riordan If you were wondering about this book and can't decide if you want to read it, I read it and maybe this will help you decide. This book tells the first story of the Percy Jackson Series. The story is mainly based on Greek mythology but with a modern twist. Read about the marvelous first adventure of main character Percy Jackson (a teen from Manhattan) and his friends as they fight monsters and try to keep peace between the Olympian gods. This story is full of action and adventure and will keep readers wanting more. This story won't let you down, except that there is more in the series, and you haven't read it all. yet. I highly recommend this book. Opinion of the Tome GuyThe Tome Guy

I don’t want me third grader reading about “eating disorders”, throwing up, panic attacks, anxiety , bullying, puberty, and seeing a therapist. I don’t know how it has so many stars and other parents are ok this being put into a young mind. Back it goes . The other books talk about kissing , spin the bottle and teen drama. 3rd grader does not need to read about this kind of stuff. Their minds are impressionable and need to focus on positive thingsBatgirl

These were being offered at a very attractive price and I finally decided to buy. I've seen odd snippets of the films and thought to try the books; very pleased I did. Films can never keep more than three narrative threads going unlike a book and with these I have lost count of the number of threads running through the tale. They can be read straight through as you would normally read a book or you can use chapter headings and read through an individual thread and see what one person in the tale is doing. Don't expect happy endings though George Martin tells it as you would expect those times to be where the unlikable survive and the likable end up dead or maimed. And when you have read through, start again because this is a tale so tightly written with events and characters intertwining it will take several reads to fully get to grips with it. And then prepare yourself for the next book in what promises to be a never ending saga.
As an avid game of thrones fan, naturally I felt like getting the ASOIAF books for cheap. Postage was quick and the item arrived in immaculate condition, with a free poster map of Westeros and a part of Essos. The box that contains the book set has kinda teared slightly on the edges however. The box has been made to be maybe a bit too tight so take care when taking out books and putting them back in. Overall excellent service from The Works. Would recommend the box set especially at this price! Currently on book 2 and I thought A Game of Thrones was a compelling read, so the actual content is fantastic as well. If you're a GOT fan, make sure you have this on your bookshelf.ansbha-5243
Missed the series when shown on TV, so bought the books to accompany the film series, also recently purchased. Have only just started to read the first novel, but already I am captivated by the detail and the compelling and thrilling storyline. Looking forward to reading through and watching each of the episodes in turn.wyndhams52

I don’t like writing reviews. I think it’s silly (although I read them…) and because of that I’ve never written one, but this book is worth it. I saw this book among other “first day of school” books section in the middle of a very busy day at Target. I read a few and didn’t really love them then I picked this gem up. I’m an immigrant in this country and I immediately started weeping, INSIDE Target, in front of people, around page 3. It is a lovely book that is beautifully written and illustrated and I only wish it had been written earlier. It tells a lovely message of inclusion and love and family and friendships. I’m not going to lie, I thought I was buying it for my American born child, but really, I bought it for myself. Just a beautiful book.Athinak
This is a very cute book. I actually purchased it after seeing it on multiple teachers Wishlists.Jeremy
