2. The 10,000 Year Explosion: How Civilization Accelerated Human Evolution [Book]
Product Details:
Resistance to malaria. blue eyes. lactose tolerance. what do all of these traits have in common? every one of them has emerged in the last 10,000 years.scientists have long believed that the “great leap forward” that occurred some 40,000 to 50,000 years ago in europe marked end of significant biological evolution in humans. in this stunningly original account of our evolutionary history, top scholars gregory cochran and henry harpending reject this conventional wisdom and reveal that the human species has undergone a storm of genetic change much more recently. human evolution in fact accelerated after civilization arose, they contend, and these ongoing changes have played a pivotal role in human history. they argue that biology explains the expansion of the indo-europeans, the european conquest of the americas, and european jews' rise to intellectual prominence. in each of these cases, the key was recent genetic change: adult milk tolerance in the early indo-europeans that allowed for a new way of life, increased disease resistance among the europeans settling america, and new versions of neurological genes among european jews.ranging across subjects as diverse as human domestication, neanderthal hybridization, and iq tests, cochran and harpending's analysis demonstrates convincingly that human genetics have changed and can continue to change much more rapidly than scientists have previously believed. a provocative and fascinating new look at human evolution that turns conventional wisdom on its head, the 10,000 year explosion reveals the ongoing interplay between culture and biology in the making of the human race.
Reviews:
Excellent book about origins of Europe.wstaq
This book point out the evolutionary changes in mankind since civilization began. It shows in what ways man has changed and what caused the changes. I expect many people will be upset by the ways it discusses the mental and intellectual differences between the races and scientifically backs them ups. I will change the way you look at mankind.cvwiikarl1453
3. Processes In Human Evolution: The Journey From Early Hominins To Neanderthals And Modern Humans [Book]
Product Details:
The discoveries of the last decade have brought about a completely revised understanding of human evolution due to the recent advances in genetics, palaeontology, ecology, archaeology, geography, and climate science. written by two leading authorities in the fields of physical anthropology and molecular evolution, processes in human evolution presents a reconsidered overview of hominid evolution, synthesising data and approaches from a range of inter-disciplinary fields. the authors pay particular attention to population migrations – since these are crucial in understanding the origin and dispersion of the different genera and species in each continent – and to the emergence of the lithic cultures and their impact on the evolution of cognitive capacities. processes in human evolution is intended as a primary textbook for university courses on human evolution, and may also be used as supplementary reading in advanced undergraduate and graduate courses. it is also suitable for a more general audience seeking a readable but up-to-date and inclusive treatment of human origins and evolution.

5. The Story Of The Human Body: Evolution, Health And Disease [Book]
Product Details:
From an evolutionary perspective, if normal is defined as what most people have done for millions of years, then it's normal to walk and run 9-15 kilometers a day to hunt and gather fresh food which is high in fibre, low in sugar, and barely processed. it's also normal to spend much of your time nursing, napping, making stone tools, and gossiping with a small band of people. our 21st-century lifestyles, argues dan lieberman, are out of synch with our stone-age bodies.

9. The Secret Of Our Success: How Culture Is Driving Human Evolution, Domesticating Our Species, And Making Us Smarter [Book]
Product Details:
How our collective intelligence has helped us to evolve and prosperhumans are a puzzling species. on the other hand, human groups have produced ingenious technologies, sophisticated languages, and complex institutions that have permitted us to successfully expand into a vast range of diverse environments. what has enabled us to dominate the globe, more than any other species, while remaining virtually helpless as lone individuals? this book shows that the secret of our success lies not in our innate intelligence, but in our collective brains—on the ability of human groups to socially interconnect and learn from one another over generations.drawing insights from lost european explorers, clever chimpanzees, mobile hunter-gatherers, neuroscientific findings, ancient bones, and the human genome, joseph henrich demonstrates how our collective brains have propelled our species' genetic evolution and shaped our biology. our early capacities for learning from others produced many cultural innovations, such as fire, cooking, water containers, plant knowledge, and projectile weapons, which in turn drove the expansion of our brains and altered our physiology, anatomy, and psychology in crucial ways. later on, some collective brains generated and recombined powerful concepts, such as the lever, wheel, screw, and writing, while also creating the institutions that continue to alter our motivations and perceptions. henrich shows how our genetics and biology are inextricably interwoven with cultural evolution, and how culture-gene interactions launched our species on an extraordinary evolutionary trajectory.tracking clues from our ancient past to the present, the secret of our success explores how the evolution of both our cultural and social natures produce a collective intelligence that explains both our species' immense success and the origins of human uniqueness.
Reviews:
Heinrich creates a compelling synthesis of information from widely varied disciplines – from archaeology and anthropology to neuroscience and gene sequencing – showing the impact of culture on our species. He argues (effectively, in my opinion) that culture (rather than intelligence) is what truly distinguishes humans from other species on the planet. Although his writing is good and fairly easy to read, it is pretty dense with charts, numbers, technical details, and endnotes, so it might be important to note that this is more like a "fun-to-read textbook" than like a "sciencey pop culture book." There are a few places where Heinrich seems to set aside careful scholarship and shoot from the hip, so some of what he writes should be taken with a grain of salt. When he describes correlation and then attributes causes, he sometimes doesn't back this up with any proof. In a few cases, he engages in what come across to me as ad hominem attacks. But in my mind, this doesn't invalidate his central thesis.grsoft1
10. The Psychology Of Man's Possible Evolution [Book]
Product Details:
This edition of the psychology of man's possible evolution includes a lecture, not previously published, in which ouspensky givers some details of the "school of the fourth way," with which he was connected, and an account of some of its fundamental principles, methods, and rules.the psychology ouspensky sets forth in this introductory lectures has existed in one form or another for thousands of years and, unlike modern psychology, studies man from the point of view of what he may become. once a man realizes how little control he has over his reactions to external circumstances and internal stimuli, he may wish to find a way to becomoe free of this mechanical way of living. ouspensky describes how a man must work simultaneously on his knowledge and his being to find inner unity and why although his development depends on his own efforts, this is very difficult to achieve without guidance from a "school."

11. Steering Human Evolution: Eighteen Theses On Homo Sapiens Metamorphosis [Book]
Product Details:
Humanity must steer its evolution. as human knowledge moves a step ahead of darwin's theories, this book presents the emergence of human-made meta-evolution shaping our alternative futures. this novel process poses fateful challenges to humanity, which require regulation of emerging science and technology which may endanger the future of our species. however, to do so successfully, a novel 'humanity-craft' has to be developed; main ideologies and institutions need redesign; national sovereignty has to be limited; a decisive global regime becomes essential; some revaluation of widely accepted norms becomes essential; and a novel type of political leader, based on merit in addition to public support, is urgently needed. taking into account the strength of nationalism and vested interests, it may well be that only catastrophes will teach humanity to metamorphose into a novel epoch without too high transition costs. but initial steps, such as united nation reforms, are urgent in order to contain calamities and may soon become feasible. being both interdisciplinary and based on personal experience of the author, this book adds up to a novel paradigm on steering human evolution. it will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of modern history, evolution sciences, future studies, political science, philosophy of action, and science and technology. it will also be of wide appeal to the general reader anxious about the future of life on earth. comments on the corona pandemic add to the book's concrete significance.

12. Masters Of The Planet: The Search For Our Human Origins [Book]
Product Details:
Fifty thousand years ago—merely a blip in evolutionary time—our homo sapiens ancestors were competing for existence with several other human species, just as their precursors had done for millions of years. yet something about our species distinguished it from the pack, and ultimately led to its survival while the rest became extinct. just what was it that allowed homo sapiens to become masters of the planet? ian tattersall, curator emeritus at the american museum of natural history, takes us deep into the fossil record to uncover what made humans so special. surveying a vast field from initial bipedality to language and intelligence, tattersall argues that homo sapiens acquired a winning combination of traits that was not the result of long-term evolutionary refinement. instead, the final result emerged quickly, shocking our world and changing it forever.

13. Evolution Of The Human Diet: The Known, The Unknown, And The Unknowable [Book]
Product Details:
One is the fundamental concern over our present-day eating habits and the consequences of our societal choices, such as obesity prevalent in some cultures and starvation in others. another is that humans have learned to feed themselves in extremely varied environments, and these adaptations, which are fundamentally different from those of our closest biological relatives, have to have had historical roots of varying depth. the third, and the reason why most paleoanthropologists are interested in this question, is that a species' trophic level and feeding adaptations can have a strong effect on body size, locomotion, "life history strategies", geographic range, habitat choice, and social behavior.diet is key to understanding the ecology and evolution of our distant ancestors and their kin, the early hominins. a study of the range of foods eaten by our progenitors underscores just how unhealthy many of our diets are today. this volume brings together authorities from disparate fields to offer new insights into the diets of our ancestors. paleontologists, archaeologists, primatologists, nutritionists and other researchers all contribute pieces to the puzzle.this volume has at its core four main sections: reconstructed diets based on hominin fossils–tooth size, shape, structure, wear, and chemistry, mandibular biomechanics archaeological evidence of subsistence–stone tools and modified bones models of early hominin diets based on the diets of living primates–both human and non-human, paleoecology, and energetics nutritional analyses and their implications for evolutionary medicinenew techniques for gleaning information from fossil teeth, bones, and stone tools, new theories stemming from studies of paleoecology, and new models coming from analogy with modern humans and other primates all contribute to our understanding. when these approaches are brought together, they offer an impressive glimpse into the lives of our distant ancestors. the contributions in this volume explore the frontiers of our knowledge in each of these disciplines as they address the knowns, the unknowns, and the unknowables of the evolution of hominin diets.
14. The Evolution Of Humankind [Book]
Product Details:
15. The Evolution Of The Human Head [Book]
Product Details:
In one sense, human heads function much like those of other mammals. but, in other respects, the human head is quite unusual. unlike other animals, even our great ape cousins, our heads are short and wide, very big brained, snoutless, largely furless, and perched on a short, nearly vertical neck. this integration not only permits the head’s many units to accommodate each other as they grow and work, but also facilitates evolutionary change. lieberman shows how, when, and why the major transformations evident in the evolution of the human head occurred. the special way the head is integrated, lieberman argues, made it possible for a few developmental shifts to have had widespread effects on craniofacial growth, yet still permit the head to function exquisitely.this is the first book to explore in depth what happened in human evolution by integrating principles of development and functional morphology with the hominin fossil record. the evolution of the human head will permanently change the study of human evolution and has widespread ramifications for thinking about other branches of evolutionary biology.
16. Not By Genes Alone: How Culture Transformed Human Evolution [Book]
Product Details:
Humans are a striking anomaly in the natural world. our unparalleled ability to adapt has allowed us to occupy virtually every habitat on earth using an incredible variety of tools and subsistence techniques. our societies are larger, more complex, and more cooperative than any other mammal's. in this stunning exploration of human adaptation, peter j. richerson and robert boyd argue that only a darwinian theory of cultural evolution can explain these unique characteristics. not by genes alone offers a radical interpretation of human evolution, arguing that our ecological dominance and our singular social systems stem from a psychology uniquely adapted to create complex culture. richerson and boyd illustrate here that culture is neither superorganic nor the handmaiden of the genes. rather, it is essential to human adaptation, as much a part of human biology as bipedal locomotion. drawing on work in the fields of anthropology, political science, sociology, and economics—and building their case with such fascinating examples as kayaks, corporations, clever knots, and yams that require twelve men to carry them—richerson and boyd convincingly demonstrate that culture and biology are inextricably linked, and they show us how to think about their interaction in a way that yields a richer understanding of human nature. in abandoning the nature-versus-nurture debate as fundamentally misconceived, not by genes alone is a truly original and groundbreaking theory of the role of culture in evolution and a book to be reckoned with for generations to come. “i continue to be surprised by the number of educated people (many of them biologists) who think that offering explanations for human behavior in terms of culture somehow disproves the suggestion that human behavior can be explained in darwinian evolutionary terms. o. wilson, harvard university

This book is not a a presentation of a religious bias as some claim. However it does seriously question the theory of evolution. Though it is inevitably biased towards the author's opinion, it sticks very closely to facts and scientific analysis. Most of the material is based on interviews of evolutionary scientists performed exclusively for this book. IF YOU HAVE ANY INTEREST IN THE EVOLUTION OF WHALES OR BIRDS OR DINOSAURS this book has some ASTOUNDING information about current theories that you will find almost nowhere else. If you wonder why anyone questions evolution this book will give you a good insight into source of their doubt.newsw.newsw
I used this series for my high school student, who gets bored easily and needs engaging material. The "Evolution: The Grand Experiment" has been a GREAT study for us and kept my student interested and actually learning. It takes a very scientific and factual approach to the material and encourages the reader to use common sense and thinking skills instead of just swallowing information. The full-color images, charts, and call-out boxes break up the reading so it isn't monotonous. It's enough material for 1 semester, and I definitely encourage getting the coordinating Teacher's Manual, as that has the questions, quizzes, and answer keys related to this book. For anyone who wants to do a complete year of science, we found that getting both this book and the next volume (Living Fossils) has worked well to fill the year with a challenging but not overwhelming schedule.VANESSA

19. The Complete World Of Human Evolution [Book]
Product Details:
Human domination of the earth is now so complete that it is easy to forget how recently our role in the history of the planet began: the earliest apes evolved around twenty million years ago, yet homo sapiens has existed for a mere 150,000 years. in the intervening period, many species of early ape and human have lived and died out, leaving behind the fossilized remains that have helped to make the detailed picture of our evolution revealed here.this exciting, up-to-the-minute account is divided into three accessible sections. "in search of our ancestors" examines the contexts in which fossilized remains have been found and the techniques used to study them. "the fossil evidence" traces in detail the evolution of apes and humans, from proconsul to the australopithecines, and homo erectus to the neanderthals and homo sapiens. the latest fossil finds at major new sites such as dmanisi in georgia and gran dolina in spain are appraised, and new advances in genetic studies, including the extraction of dna from extinct human species, are evaluated. "interpreting the evidence" reconstructs and explains the evolution of human behavior, describing the development of tool use, the flourishing of the earliest artists, and the spread of modern humans to all corners of the world. the book is superbly illustrated with hundreds of photographs, diagrams, and specially commissioned reconstruction drawings by the artist john sibbick.
