I bought this book for my hubby, but I found out that once I started reading it, I couldn’t put it down! Get this book for a baseball fan.Elizabeth
Our son has always liked baseball and your books are great for him. The puzzle mat should work great for our daughter who uses the kitchen table to make puzzles. When she’s working on one she, her husband and 2 small children have to eat their meals elsewhere. This should alleviate that from now on! Thank you!JEFFREY
My son is both a "reluctant reader" and a baseball fanatic, and I can't wait to give him this book! With each "why" question asked, the author has included wonderful pictures of the greats of baseball past, and each "answer" ranges from one paragraph to about two pages. Perfect for those who may be intimidated by a book with a more standard layout. My son loves to swap baseball knowledge with his grandpa, and I know they'll love sharing this book.Kramma

4. Pure Baseball [Book]

Product Details:
Hernandez provides commentary on two ball games in the 1993 season : a philles-braves match-up and an extra innings battle between the tigers and the yankees. [he] examines the overall strategies of the game and offers good analyses of fielding techniques, base stealing, lineups, umpiring etiquette, double-steal rundowns, hit-and-runs, signals, infield shifts and more. his most intense and incisive analysis, however, is saved for the psychology of the pitcher-hitter duels. all the subtleties of baseball are revealed as the two games unfold. mr. hernandez's opinions and pet-peeves–intentional walks, early-inning sacrifices, throwing fastballs to prevent stolen bases, large gaps in the outfield, pitchers who 'nibble. nibble, nibble,"–are well thought out and clearly articulated. [he] is particularly strong in analyzing the cat-and-mouse game played between pitchers and hitters as the count shifts the odds back and forth."– new york times book review "an mvp of a guide to the national pastime from savvy 17-year veteran of the major leagues who remains an ardent fan in retirement. hernandez came up with an angle that works to near perfection: tellingly detailed start-to-finish accounts of two games played midway through the 1993 baseball season."– kirkus reviews(starred)
Reviews:
Wonderful book. I was turned on to this books years back by a former manager. I've gained so much knowledge about the whole game of baseball. From the players view to the managers view. Takes some time to go through since there is so much information and insight. This is a really good book. One of my favorites. I highly recommend "Pure Baseball", if you really want to know the mental aspects of baseball and the multitude of games played within it. Manager to manager, pitcher to hitter, defense to offense. I decide to get the hard cover edition since the other paperback one I have is worn from use. I've read other books in the attempt to find something similar. Still looking. But I'm sure there are other one's out there. I just haven't found it yet. I'm working on "Three Nights in August", by Tony La Russa.passport619
This book is not for the casual fan of the game. Although Hernandez attempts to explain every pitch and maneuver in great detail, without at least a good working knowledge of the game you may find the dialogue a little tedious. If you love to dissect every decision made by the players and manager, this book is for you.kessel_miner
KH's book stands the test of time, and is as relevant today as it was 10 years ago. The book IS exactly what it says it is . . . a detailed analysis of the game. KH focuses on what he calls the heart of the game: the chess game between the pitcher/catcher, and the batsman. Hit and Run, positioning of the Defensive Fielders, Lefty/Lefty:Righty/Righty, what kinds of pitches do Lefty Hitters like to see, which ones are unhittable for them, etc. etc. . . .this is the kind of detail that KH gets into as he discusses two games, pitch-by-pitch, in the book. If you are a casual baseball fan, you won't like this book. If you are interested in seeing the game as the managers and players see the game, study of this book will help you . . . I say "study" because you'll have to read it more than once to learn everything that KH has to share. Craig Champagnecchampagne4

6. Play Hungry: The Making Of A Baseball Player [Book]

Product Details:
A new york times bestsellerthe inside story of how pete rose became one of the greatest and most controversial players in the history of baseball pete rose was a legend on the field. as baseball’s hit king, he shattered records that were thought to be unbreakable. and during the 1970s, he was the leader of the big red machine, the cincinnati reds team that dominated the game. but he’s also the greatest player who may never enter the hall of fame because of his lifetime ban from the sport. perhaps no other ballplayer’s story is so representative of the triumphs and tragedies of our national pastime. in play hungry, rose tells us the story of how, through hard work and sheer will, he became one of the unlikeliest stars of the game. guided by the dad he idolized, a local sports hero, pete learned to play hard and always focus on winning. but even with his dad’s guidance, pete was cut from his team as a teenager—he wasn’t a natural. rose was determined, though, and never would be satisfied with anything less than success. his relentless hustle and headfirst style would help him overcome his limitations, leading him to one of the most exciting and brash careers in the history of the sport. play hungry is pete rose’s love letter to the game, and an unvarnished story of life on the diamond. one of the icons of a golden age in baseball, he describes just what it was like to hit (or try to hit) a bob gibson fastball or a gaylord perry spitball, what happened in that infamous collision at home plate during the 1970 all-star game, and what it felt like to topple ty cobb’s hit record. and he speaks to how he let down his fans, his teammates, and the memory of his dad when he gambled on baseball, breaking the rules of a sport that he loved more than anything else. told with candor and wry humor—including tales he’s never told before—rose’s memoir is his final word on the glories and controversies of his life, and, ultimately, a master class in how to succeed when the odds are stacked against you.
Reviews:
Fantastic book. I read the book in two sittings. It was sooooo exciting I could not put it down. I still look up to Pete Rose as one of the greatest people on our planet. The Baseball Hall of Fame will not truely be a hall of fame until Pete Rose is enshrined there. Pete Rose is by far the best of the ball players to ever play the game. Just look at the lifetime best records he still holds. His constant hustle and enthusiasm was contagious to everyone around him. Thank you, Pete Rose for sharing your life with us in this book.Keith

8. Where Nobody Knows Your Name: Life In The Minor Leagues Of Baseball [Book]

Product Details:
From the acclaimed #1 bestselling author . . . a riveting journey through the world of minor-league baseball “no one grows up playing baseball pretending that they're pitching or hitting in triple-a.” —chris schwinden, triple-a pitcher “if you don't like it here, do a better job.” —ron johnson, triple-a manager john feinstein gave readers an unprecedented view of the pga tour in a good walk spoiled. he opened the door to an ncaa basketball locker room in his explosive bestseller a season on the brink. now, turning his eye to our national pastime, sports journalist john feinstein explores the colorful and mysterious world of minor-league baseball—a gateway through which all major-league players pass in their careers . . . hoping never to return. baseball's minor leagues are a paradox. for some players, the minors are a glorious launching pad toward years of fame and fortune; for others, a crash-landing pad when injury or poor play forces a big leaguer back to a life of obscure ballparks and cramped buses instead of fenway park and plush charter planes. focusing exclusively on the triple-a level, one step beneath major league baseball, feinstein introduces readers to nine unique men: three pitchers, three position players, two managers, and an umpire. through their compelling stories, feinstein pulls back the veil on a league that is chock-full of gifted baseball players, managers, and umpires who are all one moment away from getting called up—or back—to the majors. the stories are hard to believe: a first-round draft pick and pitching ace who rocketed to major-league success before finding himself suddenly out of the game, hatching a presumptuous plan to get one more shot at the mound; a home run–hitting former world series hero who lived the dream, then bounced among six teams before facing the prospects of an unceremonious end to his career; a big-league all-star who, in the span of five months, went from being completely out of baseball to becoming a star in the alds, then signing a $10 million contract; and a well-liked designated hitter who toiled for eighteen seasons in the minors—a record he never wanted to set—before facing his final, highly emotional chance for a call-up to the big leagues. from raleigh to pawtucket, from lehigh valley to indianapolis and beyond, where nobody knows your name gives readers an intimate look at a baseball world not normally seen by the fans. john feinstein gets to the heart of the human stories in a uniquely compelling way, crafting a masterful book that stands alongside his very best works.

Reviews:
I was very excited about this product. The illustrations and beautiful and tone is fun. However, it’s very disappointing that there are multiple inaccuracies in the book. For example, Ted Williams was NOT a middle infielder. Nolan Ryan was not left handed. And the like. If these were corrected it’d be a 5 star product, but in its current state, these are not insignificant oversights.Lee E.
VERY disappointed. As soon as I received my THREE copies, I sent a note to you in TWO different places and NEVER heard back. Do you realize that the logo is backwards in several places for your New York Yankees? Mickey Mantle and Lou Gehrig. This is inexcusable. I had planned to give these as gifts and am SO disappointed. The stories are good, the illustrations are delightful but this should not have been printed like this.Janet S.
We are a baseball family. Our youngest is in his second year of t ball and in kindergarten. Hot this as a Christmas gift and I know that he will like it. He loves books and baseball!Fawn C.

Very good book about the history of baseball interspersed with the author's personal experiences. Yes, it does get a little long – winded at times on specific subjects but, is a very good book, overall. Quite a few little known facts regarding baseball origins. I would recommend this for anyone who loves the game of baseball.stoopid13
Baseball is more than a game. It's the people who invented it, the people who promoted it, and all the "stuff" used to promote it and play it. This book will tell you everything you want to know about everything "baseball" . And it's entertaining, too!organhauler
