Great walk through for gardeners who need a little help planning and organizing to reap the most from their garden.MELISSA
Authors claim this book works for any gardening zone and while this is correct, it takes a few moments to date your pages. Once this is done, book is ready to go! I love the gardening tips. I am a medium experienced gardener and I learned a few things right off the bat! I love the journal pages. They are divided by years so you can easily see what worked well (or not so well) the year before and plan accordingly. Journal pages are located within each week, which makes it very easy to see while you are IN the week. Pages can be wiped off, which is a great help when you have the book at the garden while working. One very small complaint. Print is dark gray, which is a little difficult for me to read without my glasses but again, a very small complaint. Also fun are the "She says / He says" tips. Father and Daughter sometimes agree and sometimes don't! You decide!lb_homesales

Reviews:
This book gives great information on starting seedlings, companion planting, livestock management, and is a great primer for a budding homesteader or for anyone who wants to be a bit more self sufficient. Please check with your local zoning laws before you jump into building chicken coops, etc. Not all areas are keen on some of the ideas in this book.tanjaeubanks
I LOVE this book so far and I'm not even done reading it! It has so many useful tips, and information…lots of answers to questions that I wouldn't have even thought to ask. Everything is really easy to understand (I had no knowledge of how to raise bees, now I do) and very well laid out. Not only is it well written but there are pictures in some cases to help convey what is being said. Perfect! Can't wait for it to be spring/summer so I can start putting some of this into action!elles_1717
This is a great start, if you are trying to get back to basics and live with a little more self sufficiency. I does not have all the answers, but it gives great information to ask the right questions.garrobin_2

Reviews:
This book goes into more detail than most general gardening books. I was impressed that it explained Botanical names correctly. The seed starting chapter was in depth for experienced gardeners but not overwhelming for novice's. The plant profiles are accurate, and include pronunciation, botanic and common names, zone and bloom times. The few pages dedicated to soil are in my opinion incomplete. While sand, silt, and clay soils are all mentioned, and recommendations are made on how to improve them for gardening–Soil STRUCTURE, is not defined. The novice however, is still directed to do the right thing regarding their soil type. If I could only own one general gardening book, I would choose this one. 15. Gardening For A Lifetime: How To Garden Wiser As You Grow Older [Book]

Product Details:
From the winner of the national garden club's award of excellence although the garden may beckon as strongly as ever, the tasks involved—pulling weeds, pushing wheelbarrows, digging holes, moving heavy pots—become increasingly difficult, or even impossible, with advancing age. but the idea of giving it up is unthinkable for most gardeners. so what’s the alternative? in gardening for a lifetime, sydney eddison draws on her own forty years of gardening to provide a practical and encouraging roadmap for scaling back while keeping up with the gardening activities that each gardener loves most. like replacing demanding plants like delphiniums with sturdy, relatively carefree perennials like sedums, rudbeckias, and daylilies. or taking the leap and hiring help—another pair of hands, even for a few hours a week, goes a long way toward getting a big job done. this new edition features an additional chapter describing how sydney’s struggles with hip and back problems forced her to walk the walk. as a friend of hers says, “last summer you wrote the book. now, i’m happy to see that you’ve read it.” gentle, personable, and practical, gardening for a lifetime will be welcomed by all gardeners looking to transform gardening from a list of daunting chores into the gratifying, joyful activity it was meant to be.

Great book!! I was looking for something in my senior years that would help with taking care of a large garden!his book was a recommendation for just that when I took a Master Gardening class! Loads of info on how to "replant" your gardenlindyremembers
I would encourage anyone who loves gardening to read this book–especially those who, like me, are getting closer to that "advanced age" when gardening is still one of the best things we do, but becomes a little more difficult to do. Eddison has a humorous, yet realistic, approach to the question of gardening and age. She recognizes the limitations that come with age and physical problems, but also recognizes the sadness that accompanies those limitations for the avid gardner. There is a slight melancholy that sneaks in when one looks back over 40 or 50 years of gardening, to realize that the abilities are not what they used to be. The old saying, "The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak," comes to mind. As I hit 60, with a coronary bypass in my recent past, I intend to keep gardening as long as I possibly can. And, I pray that when my time comes, the good Lord lets me drop dead in my garden, doing what I love doing. Read the book!leedj51

Whether you are a keen gardener or in the horticulture industry this book is amazing. Packed with information, it is easily the best plant reference book I have owned. Weighty though, so make sure you have strong knees.Rich
Very comprehensive coverage of just about every garden plant you can think of but note that this is a UK-based publication so the cultivation information given relates most closely to the English climate, which is ok if you're based in Tasmania or other cooler regions such as the Blue Mountains. Australian native plants are covered to some degree but you should look elsewhere if they are your focus.copycath
Excellent as a reference book in a library. Very well researched and presented. Not so good for home use, as it is very bulky and heavy, if you are elderly.elvis3764
