5. Science And Human Behavior [Book]
Product Details:
The psychology classic—a detailed study of scientific theories of human nature and the possible ways in which human behavior can be predicted and controlled—from one of the most influential behaviorists of the twentieth century and the author of walden two.“ this is an important book, exceptionally well written, and logically consistent with the basic premise of the unitary nature of science. many students of society and culture would take violent issue with most of the things that skinner has to say, but even those who disagree most will find this a stimulating book.” —samuel m. strong, the american journal of sociology“this is a remarkable book—remarkable in that it presents a strong, consistent, and all but exhaustive case for a natural science of human behavior…it ought to be…valuable for those whose preferences lie with, as well as those whose preferences stand against, a behavioristic approach to human activity.” —harry prosch, ethics
Reviews:
S&HB is a textbook written by B. F. Skinner for students in introductory psychology at Harvard. Published in 1953, some of the principles are dated but not the underlying philosophy and the scope of Skinner's approach which begins with basic principles and goes on to cover the behavior of individuals, groups, and eventually the survival of a culture. As good as the book is, one really needs a guide because Skinner's approach to behavior is much different from how behavior is approached in Western culture. For example, Skinner recognizes that humans have feelings, emotions, and can sense events occurring beneath their skins but he does not consider these causes because they cannot readily be altered. (Interestingly, he is concerned with describing how humans can learn to talk about events occurring beneath their skins.) Skinner considered any action of an organism that was mediated by a nervous system and controlled by other aspects of the physical world to be behavior. Given this definition, he asked "What can ethically be done to change and maintain behavior? Lots can be done for the better! Great intro book to understanding the science of behavior! I strongly recommend it!will.esp
Interesting but outdated is how I would summarise this book. Good for historic interest but so many of the ideas have been significantly updated or dismissed as wrong that this book should not be used as a learning tool unless one already has a lot of contemporary knowledge for comparison.BH

8. Human Behavior In The Social Environment: A Social Systems Approach [Book]
Product Details:
Since the publication of the first edition of human behavior in the social environment, several generations of students have successfully used this classic text, which takes a social systems approach to human behavior. this systems approach is still widely accepted in the human services disciplines, including social work, education, nursing, psychology, and in human services programs themselves. its ideas have become the organizing framework for curriculum, as well as fruitful sources for new applications of theory and practice. among the advantages of the social systems approach is that it permits students and practitioners to see connections between fields of practice, between methods, and across professional disciplines and bodies of theory. the book serves as a template of the concentric circles of human behavior, with chapters on fields of behavior, beginning with the person and ranging outward to culture and society. abundant examples from practice and from behavioral patterns are drawn from the social sciences, topical events, literature, and the authors' personal and professional experiences. this volume responds to the needs of students and instructors as these have developed since the publication of the previous edition.

9. The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided By Politics And Religion [Book]
Product Details:
In "the righteous mind", psychologist jonathan haidt answers some of the most compelling questions about human relationships: why can it sometimes feel as though half the population is living in a different moral universe? why do ideas such as 'fairness' and 'freedom' mean such different things to different people? why is it so hard to see things from another viewpoint? he explores how morality evolved to enable us to form communities, and how moral values are not just about justice and equality – for some people authority, sanctity or loyalty matter more. morality binds and blinds, but, using his own research, haidt proves it is possible to liberate ourselves from the disputes that divide good people. "a landmark contribution to humanity's understanding of itself". ("the new york times"). "a truly seminal book". (david goodhart, "prospect"). "a tour de force – brave, brilliant, and eloquent. it will challenge the way you think about liberals and conservatives, atheism and religion, good and evil". (paul bloom, author of "how pleasure works"). "compelling … a fluid combination of erudition and entertainment". (ian birrell, "observer"). "lucid and thought-provoking … deserves to be widely read". (jenni russell, "sunday times"). jonathan haidt is a social and cultural psychologist. he has been on the faculty of the university of virginia since 1995 and is currently a visiting professor of business ethics at new york university's stern school of business. he is the co-editor of "flourishing: positive psychology" and the "life well lived", and is the author of "the happiness hypothesis: finding modern truth in ancient wisdom".

This book explains why we cant get along. It does so in a convincing and fact-driven way. If you want to have hope for the future, read this book.roberluca21
This was a text for a class I am taking, I did not expect much from it, except reading assignments. I was pleased to find that it was much more – not only it is an interesting read, it really does explain how we can all be GOOD people yet have very different views on politics and religion. The author uses real life examples and as well as data and studies to explain how measuring moral decisions and foundations play a role in how we treat each other and determine what is fair, right and acceptable in society.magyar5615
It does exactly what the subtitle suggests and explains the root causes of divisions between religions and politics and many other social challenges. I read it, then I studied it, and bought his earlier and latest books. We may be able to save humanity before it destroys itself with this knowledge. Haidt has some great YouTube videos. They'll make you want to buy his books if this is an area of interest to you.Pokken

11. The Abcs Of Human Behavior: Behavioral Principles For The Practicing Clinician [Book]
Product Details:
When cognitive behavior therapy emerged in the 1950s, driven by the work of albert ellis and aaron beck, basic behavior principles were largely sidelined in clinical psychology curricula. issues in cognition became the focus of case conceptualization and intervention planning for most therapists. but as the new third-wave behavior therapies begin to address weaknesses in the traditional cognitive behavioral models-principally the modest effectiveness of thought stopping and cognitive restructuring techniques-basic behavior principles are once again attracting the interest of front-line clinicians. many of today's clinicians, though, received their training during the years in which classical behaviorism was not a major part of clinical education. in order to make the best use of the new contextual behaviorism, they need to revisit basic behavioral principles from a practical angle. this book addresses this need.the abcs of human behavior offers practicing clinicians a pithy and practical introduction to the basics of modern behavioral psychology. the book focuses both on the classical principles of learning as well as more recent developments that explain language and cognition in behavioral and contextual terms. these principles are not just discussed in the abstract-rather the book shows how the principles of learning apply in the clinical context. practical and easy to read, the book walks clinicians through both common sense and clinical examples that help them learn to use behavioral principles to observe, explain, and influence behavior in a therapeutic setting.

13. 12 Rules For Life: An Antidote To Chaos [Book]
Product Details:
#1 national bestseller #1 international bestsellerwhat does everyone in the modern world need to know? renowned psychologist jordan b. peterson's answer to this most difficult of questions uniquely combines the hard-won truths of ancient tradition with the stunning revelations of cutting-edge scientific research.humorous, surprising and informative, dr. peterson tells us why skateboarding boys and girls must be left alone, what terrible fate awaits those who criticize too easily, and why you should always pet a cat when you meet one on the street.what does the nervous system of the lowly lobster have to tell us about standing up straight (with our shoulders back) and about success in life? why did ancient egyptians worship the capacity to pay careful attention as the highest of gods? what dreadful paths do people tread when they become resentful, arrogant and vengeful? peterson journeys broadly, discussing discipline, freedom, adventure and responsibility, distilling the world's wisdom into 12 practical and profound rules for life. 12 rules for life shatters the modern commonplaces of science, faith and human nature, while transforming and ennobling the mind and spirit of its readers.
Reviews:
I have just ordered two more copies, after only reading the intro.—and Prof. Peterson's numerous interviews simply expand my own heart. In this climate of high anxiety and appalling lack of compassion, echoed by Hugh MacKay in AUSTRALIA REIMAGINED. It is no wonder that he has an enthralled audience of millions, world- wide. My wish is that Prof. Peterson will produce a primer affirming our children and youth, to give them hope— for our learning young to master before they get to our Uni's. that have to do their own serious reflecting. In my opinion. AND to give our valiant teachers stronger morale and endurance—as so vividly depicted in Gabbie Stroud's TEACHER, also published last year. Finally, the more I devour of the Prof.'s 'Rules' the more I want to yell my rental's roof off , in agreement—our kids CAN be brought up in a far better world, if we follow Jordan's example of such raw courage and exemplary scholarship and teaching. I only wish that I could buy another 12 copies to share around !KCKLL
This is the third book I purchase as a gift. Jordan Peterson tells it as it is in how one should behave to be a functional human being in society. This is sadly supposed to be the role of parents but not many parents nurture their kids anymore by teaching them the basic life skills. I've seen so many young people can't keep their own room organised yet trying to solve the world's most complex problem. Let's keep it to basic – stand up straight, make yourself better than who you are yesterday and clean up your room before you try to solve any life's complex problem. You will be more content and happier in life and no longer feeling depressed all the time. Great for both men, women and anyone. I'm a woman who loves this book. This book has changed my life!!This book changes my life
An excellent book written with great depth and understanding about living a life. It is necessary to read at least twice to get a more complete picture of what Peterson is on about. Best of all this book made me think deeply about living a life and the ultimate ending of that life. Highly recommended but only to serious readers and certainly not for shallow thinking people.Bob
14. Sapiens: A Brief History Of Humankind [Book]
Product Details:
Official u.s. edition with full color illustrations throughout.new york times bestsellera summer reading pick for president barack obama, bill gates, and mark zuckerberg from a renowned historian comes a groundbreaking narrative of humanity’s creation and evolution—a #1 international bestseller—that explores the ways in which biology and history have defined us and enhanced our understanding of what it means to be “human.” one hundred thousand years ago, at least six different species of humans inhabited earth. yet today there is only one—homo sapiens. what happened to the others? and what may happen to us? most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but dr. yuval noah harari breaks the mold with this highly original book that begins about 70,000 years ago with the appearance of modern cognition. from examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.dr. harari also compels us to look ahead, because over the last few decades humans have begun to bend laws of natural selection that have governed life for the past four billion years. featuring 27 photographs, 6 maps, and 25 illustrations/diagrams, this provocative and insightful work is sure to spark debate and is essential reading for aficionados of jared diamond, james gleick, matt ridley, robert wright, and sharon moalem.
Reviews:
Sapiens is an insightful, history-laden explanation of how and why we humans organize ourselves the way we do. At the same time, it's a readable story of human history. Harari is an apt guide who doesn't preach, but lays out for us how we may have come by some of our inner workings. At a time when the future looks opaque, an unflinching look at our past can do wonders. I read all three Harari books this past summer, but found Sapiens to be the most compelling and important work of the three. A book that will change your mind, if you're open to it.jwregularguy
The book is a modern day classic which tries to reason why certain decisions were chosen over the other and how these decisions have shaped up the course of human history. While giving us potential explanations, Yuval also reminds us that these are mere speculations or theories and nobody can be sure what was going inside the minds of homo sapiens at that time. Some chapters are a bit of a stretch, though when someone tries to summarize the course of 70,000 years of human history into 416 pages, one can hardly complain. I have given an extra star for BookishSanta team who have provided the book in original (color edition) form with a nice touch of handwritten note.Utkarsh Y.
I really enjoyed this book. It is well written and had me gripped from page one. The author puts things into perspective – drawing analogies and parallels – that is shocking , surprising and even funny. I felt a number of emotions reading this, from ignorance, astonishing intellect, shock, horror, surprise, anger, sadness, hunger? I highly recommend for anyone looking for a easy, albeit enlightening read about the development of human, society and life as we know it.Gene

Reviews:
not a easy read for myself ,i enjoy itlaurent1963
This is an excellent book regarding healthy as well as undesirable social interactions, why and how they occur. The author is a Harvard trained psychiatrist who was a medical journalist for many years, and published the famed "Emotional Intelligence," Social intelligence focuses on the dynamics of social interactions between two (or more) people, including behaviors that facilitate and those that thwart communications between people. It is richly analytical, without being pedantic. I recommend it for anyone who is interested either in improving their own social communications skills, or are trying to understand others in their life who may suffer (or excel!) in this dimension. This would include communications at home, at work, in marriage, and in community organizations (church, gym etc–wherever you interact with humans!).quietly1
I borrowed the book from library first but didn't have time to finish it. The book is a good source of research reference material for me so I'd like to own a copy.yaya9911
17. Projections: A Story Of Human Emotions [Book]
Product Details:
A groundbreaking tour of the human mind that illuminates the biological nature of our inner worlds and emotions, through gripping, moving—and, at times, harrowing—clinical stories“[a] scintillating and moving analysis of the human brain and emotions.”—nature“beautifully connects the inner feelings within all human beings to deep insights from modern psychiatry and neuroscience.”—robert lefkowitz, nobel laureatekarl deisseroth has spent his life pursuing truths about the human mind, both as a renowned clinical psychiatrist and as a researcher creating and developing the revolutionary field of optogenetics, which uses light to help decipher the brain’s workings. in projections, he combines his knowledge of the brain’s inner circuitry with a deep empathy for his patients to examine what mental illness reveals about the human mind and the origin of human feelings—how the broken can illuminate the unbroken.through cutting-edge research and gripping case studies from deisseroth’s own patients, projections tells a larger story about the material origins of human emotion, bridging the gap between the ancient circuits of our brain and the poignant moments of suffering in our daily lives. the stories of deisseroth’s patients are rich with humanity and shine an unprecedented light on the self—and the ways in which it can break down. a young woman with an eating disorder reveals how the mind can rebel against the brain’s most primitive drives of hunger and thirst; an older man, smothered into silence by depression and dementia, shows how humans evolved to feel not only joy but also its absence; and a lonely uighur woman far from her homeland teaches both the importance—and challenges—of deep social bonds.illuminating, literary, and essential, projections is a revelatory, immensely powerful work. it transforms our understanding not only of the brain but of ourselves as social beings—giving vivid illustrations through science and resonant human stories of our yearning for connection and meaning.
Reviews:
Karl (author) turns the workings of the mind into a rich, vivid story. A movie of the mind. This book is closer to poetry than pop sci. It's a great, approachable read for anyone curious about their mind.Acasualreader

A good book that emphasizes many of the things I have learned of the years in the school of hard knocks. Wish I could have had this fifty years ago. It would have been an easier read if edited a little better, (many typos and improper use of words) but a good book overall.Ken G.
