1. Skeletons On The Zahara: A True Story Of Survival [Book]

Product Details:
A masterpiece of historical adventure, skeletons on the zahara chronicles the true story of twelve american sailors who were shipwrecked off the coast of africa in 1815, captured by desert nomads, sold into slavery, and subjected to a hellish two-month journey through the perilous heart of the sahara.the western sahara is a baking hot and desolate place, home only to nomads and their camels, and to locusts, snails and thorny scrub–and its barren and ever-changing coastline has baffled sailors for centuries. in august 1815, the us brig commerce was dashed against cape bojador and lost, although through bravery and quick thinking the ship's captain, james riley, managed to lead all of his crew to safety. what followed was an extraordinary and desperate battle for survival in the face of human hostility, starvation, dehydration, death and despair.captured, robbed and enslaved, the sailors were dragged and driven through the desert by their new owners, who neither spoke their language nor cared for their plight. reduced to drinking urine, flayed by the sun, crippled by walking miles across burning stones and sand and losing over half of their body weights, the sailors struggled to hold onto both their humanity and their sanity. to reach safety, they would have to overcome not only the desert but also the greed and anger of those who would keep them in captivity.from the cold waters of the atlantic to the searing saharan sands, from the heart of the desert to the heart of man, skeletons on the zahara is a spectacular odyssey through the extremes and a gripping account of courage, brotherhood, and survival.
Reviews:
You can find the synopsis of this book elsewhere, I'll just leave you with my impressions. This is one of those historical works that almost reads like a novel, but not in a schlocky way. Dean King does a nice job sticking to the unimpassioned facts, while still injecting enough humanism so that the reader generates genuine empathy and respect for the heroes of this story. I highly recommend this read!vertiboy
This will give you some perspective on life in the Saharan region of Africa. Surely some elements have changed after 200 years; however, many remain the same. The ability of the body to adapt under dire circumstances is fascinating. Make sure you read this with a tall glass of iced water !charles5618
Incredulous book of survival; couldn't put the book down…read it in one sitting.vinnydanose

Reviews:
This was a terrific read. It's obvious that Gabel and Eichar were the most factual of any book on the subject! The entire book was set up in a manner that enticed me to keep reading and I really appreciated the flipping from the present to the past in an effort to tie the two together. Well written and thoroughly researched. It was a great purchase!1967scifihorrornut
I have been intrigued and fascinated by the tragic mystery of the Dyatlov Pass for many years. In 1959 nine experienced hikers/mountain climbers in the Ural Mountains in the former Soviet Union did not return from their trip. When search parties were sent out to find them, their tent was discovered with huge knife tears in it – made from the inside! As though something horrific had occurred inside the tent that sent the nine young, healthy, highly educated and mentally stable hikers running for their lives into 30 degrees below zero temperatures and extremely high winds. None of them had bothered to put on their boots as all the boots were neatly lined up inside the tent. There were no signs of struggle or violence inside the tent. Eventually all nine bodies were discovered not far from their camp site, none of them wearing their thermal boots and not properly dressed for the intense cold, snow and wind in this unforgiving climate. The official conclusion was that they were killed by an "unknown compelling force." This has left the incident open for 50 years of conspiracy theories concerning just what this "unknown compelling force" was. None of these theories came close to adequately explaining what happened to these nine young people. If you want to find out what most likely DID happen and is certainly the most scientific, logical and sane theory, read Dead Mountain by Donnie Eichar. After reading this book in just two sittings (I couldn't put it down!), now I feel that this tragic mystery has finally been put to rest.kiefer5000
A co-ed band of adventurers undertake a challenging climb. They do not return. Search and rescue teams discover their remains and the unsolved mystery gives rise to wild theories. A recent investigation reopens this "cold case." The findings will surprise you. Physics is the key to understanding what really happened to these Soviet Union college students. This is the sort of mystery Mr. Sherlock Holmes would have enjoyed.jordyn-grace

This is a wonderful story written in a language our grandchildren can understand and relate to. Myles Standish is another great American of the Mayflower immigrants who the liberal left are attempting to besmirch and minimize the role the pilgrims played in the founding of America. Walmart only let us purchase 5 of these, consequently we had to go elsewhere to purchase others for our grandchildren. I am the 9th direct descendant of Myles Standish.Ralph

The Finest Hours is based off a true story took place in the 1950's. The story starts quick, it explains the conditions of both of the ships, the Pendleton and Fort Mercer. Both ships have been severely damaged and need help fast. Both ships were quickly made during WWII which led to them being damaged in the enormous 60-70 foot waves. Both ships were located a few hundred miles of the coasts of Cape Cod, known as one of the most dangerous places when at sea. As both ship's crew members hope to survive this tragic disaster, the coast guard has been notified and are racing against time and the snowy blizzard. I really enjoyed this book and would encourage anyone that enjoys action packed books to take a look at this story. I really liked how the authors never really over exaggerated the story one bit. This story was really good as it told the true event of probably one of the most dramatic rescue at sea ever recorded.BrycenN
The book was very interesting and filled in all the questions that the movie did not address. Very compelling. Such bravery in the darkest of storms. Hard to believe anyone survived be you sailor or saver. The picture galley was nice to put the faces with the names. Thanks to the authors for bringing this to us.50fivenomad
