The actual book was fine, big fan of my boys Neil Gaimen and Pratchett. However, the product description was "good," which implies a scratch here and there, maybe a creased spine, or a note/highlight. The book recieved had cracks all over cover, torn pages, and overall disappointing. I guess you get what you pay for, but if this is what "good" condition is, maybe shell out the few extra dollars for "very good" or "like new"evelynrl
I have given away more copies of Good Omens than I can count, over the years, then buy another copy when I decide to read it again. The story is timeless, the premise entertaining, and its hard to tell who wrote what, with writers as good as Gaiman and Pratchett. Needless to say, I had a tremendously entertaining evening re-reading it, and look forward to the TV adaptation.sheenpowel_0
I have read this book many times and each time it is just as funny and entertaining as the first time I read it. God and the Devil Decide this is it! Send down instructions to their chief demon and chief angel on earth who decide, "No way can we allow this happen". Their pursuits in preventing Armageddon are akin to the "gang who couldn't shoot straight"". Hysterical and funny. Honestly, this book is like my favourite book to ever exist. I love the way Donna Tartt expresses each character, the descriptions of each character, the imagery, it's just so perfect, I wish it was turned into a movie.I would love to see the way Donna would work with the directors and producers to portray this book, but it's just so perfect I'm going to read it over and over again.
I had high hopes for this book and it honestly let me down. The entire thing was anticlimactic. The characters didn't have much of a personality and I felt that many IMPORTANT things were missed out on since the narrator often wasn't included in events, he was just told about them later. I gave the book two stars because I enjoyed the writing style, but the overall story didn't appeal to me.SAVVY

I dont read books very often, but there are a few I have been able to read and retain the information. (Poor memory and concentration due to Fibromyalgi). This book changed my life. I know a lot of people tend to say that, but really, this book changed my life. It confirmed what I had been thinking about the world, and that was that we must make ourselves happy. I am not religious, so the messiah message meant something different to me than it might to someone who was. The point, I think, is that we can all be our own Messiah and make our own dreams and hopes a reality. Sitting around and waiting for things to get good isn't going to fix anything. So this book gave me an incredibly positive (if somewhat naive) outlook on the world around me. Having been a keen reader of Frances Fyfield novels which are also thought-provoking, I was keen to obtain this first title in a new series. It is proving to be very engrossing and Maisie Dobbs, the main character, is likeable and believable in the time period in which the novel is set. This slant on the aftermath of the First World War is very topical at the moment and I look forward to the next one in the series, whatever that may be about.wit1ton

Robert A Caro is simply a master of biographies. Not only does he recount fact, but it's the exploration of the individual, their characteristics, their use of power, the relationship between individuals with power and those without, that makes his writings so insightful. Caro is by far the best biographical writer I have come across. I would recommend this book and Caro's multi-volume set on Lyndon B Johnson to any reader wishing to understand politics, power and just humanity generally. A masterpiece.Electric417

I've started reading this book, and I have to say it's utterly gripping. The prologue sets the scene of a bloody climax of an historic event, that weaves its way seamlessly into the protagonists lifetime. Its engaging and rich in description and world building but without being too 'heavy' going. Making this an exciting rich and masterfully written fantasy epic. The Eye of the World novel, by Robert Jordan, creates a rich and colourfully imagined universe. Readers will be quickly charmed by and emersed in the well written local cultures and lore. Also, it is effortless to relate with the characters who are realistic and engaging. Jordan's plot focuses on three unlikely heroes: Rand, a simple sheepherder, Perrin, a thoughtful blacksmith and Mat, a likeable rogue. All three have their lives turned upside down when their sleepy home town of the Two Rivers is suprised by a horde of bloodthirsty Trollics (evil man-beasts). The three boys are told by a mysterious traveller Moirane that they are 'taver'en' (those who are able to manipulate unwittingly the fabric that governs the universe). These three must leave their home as they are sought by The Dark One (the novel's protagonist) and travel to the Eye of the World, which is a source of immense magical power. Their task is to stop The Dark One who is threating to use it to remake the world in his own image. Will the three small town farmboys be able to take on the immense power of The Dark One? What will they discover about their destiny in the process? The fantasy elements of the novel are top notch, with the main magical system being 'The One Power'. The One Power exists in a select few individuals who are able to tap into this personal source and manipulate the five elements(earth, fire, wind, water and spirit), to do everything from light a fire to heal a person who is mortally wounded. The twist to this inner power is that only women can touch it safely (Saidar) and men who touch the source (Saidin) will eventually go mad and die, killing those they love. This Ying Yang tension is key to the themes of the novel. This approach to magic is refreshing and leads to many moral conflicts within the novel itself. The cultures and lands in the Wheel of Time series are not only rich and imaginative, but have had all aspects considered, even down to marriage rights and political intrigue! Though this is a fantasy novel at heart, all of the races are original. You won't see your predictable Orcs and Elves in this text! This makes the world of this fantasy novel very realistic, yet also inventive. The main characters are not perfect and have real flaws that readers can relate to (for example, Mat having a penchant for gambling and girls!!!) The storyline is satisfying, which at its heart is a traditional Greek plot of good versus evil. Overall, Jordan's orignal style of prose, delightful descriptions and indepth, realistic cultures add a depth to the story which makes this novel refreshing and will keep you turning pages to the conclusion. I absolutely loved this book. While it's hard to come up with a truly original story anymore, Robert Jordan has created an incredible world that feels both familiar and strange at the same time. His characters truly breathe and the classic good vs. evil plot line is comforting with enough new spins to keep it fresh. I love the strong female characters; it's rare in high fantasy to exalt the woman's power and I applaud the author for doing so. This book dives deep into the backstory of the Wicked Witch of the West . Maybe she was misunderstood or maybe she was always Wicked. Familiar faces grace these pages including Glinda the Good Witch. You won't be able to put this book down as you discover a pre-Dorothy Oz filled with wonder, magic, and political tension. This is definitely a grown-up Oz that you will enjoy. When Dorothy killed the Wicked Witch of the West, seemingly she saved the land of Oz. Audience members cheered and were glad that the evil crone had finally been eradicatedexcept those of us who know the witch's story. Some of us are still grieving for her. Most who have read Wicked have come to know, and yes, love the one entitled the wicked witch who was brutally murdered by Dorothy Gale in the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz. As Gregory Maguire informs the world, the poor witch wasnt evil at all; she was simply misunderstood. In his 1995 novel Wicked', Maguire tells the tale of the world that Dorothy visits long before the young girl ever arrives. Almost forty years prior to Dorothys untimely drop amid the Lollipop Guild in Munchkinland, a strange green baby was born unto a priest and his wife, and was named Elphaba. Immediately feared because she was different, Elphie began her life as a strangeling, and basically stayed that way. She was not only born green, but she also had sharp, shark-like teeth which she promptly used to bite the finger off of one of the mid-wives that birthed her. They contemplated killing her because they knew she would have a rough life and she scared them, but mercifully they let her live. Elphaba Thropp grew up amid political oppression and tyranny throughout Oz as her father tried to preach away the sins that he thought were upon him, because he thought Elphaba was given to him as a punishment by the Unnamed God. Elphaba meets Galinda Arduenna at Shiz University, where the two young girls attend college. The girls, forced to room together because they lacked chaperones, were not the best of friends at first. Elphie and Galinda made due, however and soon grew fond of one another and had a gang of close friends that they would often gather with. It must be noted that Oz is made up of a great deal of strange characters, from the dwarfs in Munchkinland, to the Quadlings in the Ovvels of Quadling Country, to the Winkies from the Vinkus, and of course, animals and Animals. Animals (thats with a capital A to denote those with a spirit,or those who can walk and tall and think like humans), like the Cowardly Lion are vast in Oz, and even keep jobs like humans (and are in some cases smarter). That, however is something that the Wizard is trying to change, or Bann. After a shattering happening with Elphie's professor, Doctor Dillamond (a Goat)because of some extensive research he has done to thwart the evil Wizard, Elphaba takes on the notion to try and change the laws of the land. What follows is upheavals, restrictions on Animals, and strange people (like the large goofy Quadlings), an oppressive dictatorship in Oz, and Emerald City soldiers controlling the acts of nearly every citizen in Oz. Being a work of fantasy fiction, based loosely on Frank L. Baums The Wizard of Oz, it's filled with whimsical lands and peculiar beings that one could only conjure up in a dream state. Littered with strange, lewd sexual scenes, Wicked is an extraordinary work of fiction that makes us question what really happened in Oz. The story is about Elphaba (the "Wicked" Witch of the West) and the difficult life and times that she lived through. It shows her as a real woman, unloved by her parents, jealous of her siblings, in friendships, in love, and hopelessly depressed and distraught. This book shows how a series of misunderstandings and unlucky times can lead to the worst of times. Also, get to know Galinda (later Glinda), her once roommate and friend and the Wizard of Oz, an suicidal evil tyrant that is ruling all of Oz. Also learn what the secret is between Elphaba and the Wizard, why he wanted her killed, and what he realizes in the end along with everyone else. Like some of her earlier books about corruption in the police force, this one was hard to read because people are so evil and that is hard to accept. And as is often the case, there were twists I hadn't expected.
