1. Stolen Focus: Why You Can't Pay Attention–And How To Think Deeply Again [Book]

Product Details:
New york times bestseller – our ability to pay attention is collapsing. from the new york times bestselling author of chasing the scream and lost connections comes a groundbreaking examination of why this is happening—and how to get our attention back.“ the book the world needs in order to win the war on distraction.”—adam grant, author of think again “read this book to save your mind.”—susan cain, author of quiet shortlisted for the porchlight business book award – one of the best books of the year: the wall street journal, financial timesin the united states, teenagers can focus on one task for only sixty-five seconds at a time, and office workers average only three minutes. like so many of us, johann hari was finding that constantly switching from device to device and tab to tab was a diminishing and depressing way to live. he tried all sorts of self-help solutions—even abandoning his phone for three months—but nothing seemed to work. the truth is even more disturbing: our focus has been stolen by powerful external forces that have left us uniquely vulnerable to corporations determined to raid our attention for profit. hari found that there are twelve deep causes of this crisis, from the decline of mind-wandering to rising pollution, all of which have robbed some of our attention. in stolen focus, he introduces readers to silicon valley dissidents who learned to hack human attention, and veterinarians who diagnose dogs with adhd. he explores a favela in rio de janeiro where everyone lost their attention in a particularly surreal way, and an office in new zealand that discovered a remarkable technique to restore workers’ productivity. stolen focus will transform the debate about attention and finally show us how to get it back.
Reviews:
An incisive look at our ever diminishing capacity to focus our attention and a well researched analysis of why this is so. An easy and informative read. We all need to read this book and recognize and face this critical challenge.Frankie
Some people lead their game. Hari is one of them and in his investigation into social media and their addictive devices certainly opened my eyes. It will take the regulators twenty years to catch up but Hari points out the exploitation of young and old minds and some of the solutions society will need. If we are not too late. If you care at all about your children's mental well being, read it.Mike
This book put on paper a lot of things I'd already assumed and felt, particularly about the impact of technology, but felt it was brought low by some cringeworthy moralising at times by Hari whose own sordid history in journalism should have held him back from throwing stones. It threatened to kill my immersion, as I'd struggled to put the book down until that point, but I'm glad I read it through.Rogan

The concepts explained in this book are so relevant and logical. It is such a challenge to get out of the 'shallow work' we are faced with throughout our days and into the 'deep' but this book spells out how and shows you the benefits that will flow. I read this book in record time and started implementing the concepts immediately.Darren in the Deep

Another book recommended to me by a friend. Being a researcher by trade, Deep Work reminds me of the importance of my role – the ability o do sustained and concentrative work. This book goes through the reasons why most of us are transforming our work lives from deep to shallow work. As Cal Newport states – Shallow Work stops us from getting fired; Deep Work gets us promoted. A great book for anyone wondering why they aren't achieving their desired outputs and how to find more value to get to the next desired levelAngela

A new epidemic is sweeping the country. some people call it “adhd,” “scatter brain,” or “brain fog.” and some people simply say they “just don't feel like themselves”—and haven't for a long time.people are thinking and feeling worse than ever. why? because our brains are not getting the support they need to produce the essential brain chemicals that keep us energized, calm, focused, and inspired. the brain fog fix is a three-week program designed to help you naturally restore three of your brain's most crucial chemicals: serotonin, dopamine, and cortisol. rebalancing these three brain chemicals will, in turn, enable the rest of your brain's chemistry to reach optimal levels. you will find yourself thinking more clearly, remembering more accurately, learning more quickly, and unleashing the floodgates of your creativity. you will also find yourself feeling more optimistic, calm, energized, connected, and inspired.the good news is that this is easier than you think. instead of trying to ambitiously overhaul one aspect of your life entirely with some difficult-to-maintain resolution, begin by making small and achievable changes in many different areas of your life.“ if i've learned one thing from the thousands of people i've treated, it's that you have to take the whole person into account if you want to think and feel better.”—dr.

Product Details:
Present moment awareness is an essential ingredient in life if one expects to experience any degree of authentic peace and contentment. it has been acknowledged for centuries as the cornerstone of spiritual awakening in all traditions of eastern thought. in the west, however, it is still a relatively unrecognised concept of living. the western mind is always restless, never content with the moment. its internal dialogue is always firing off thoughts filled with emotional content and pulling the individual out of the present and into the past or future. but individuals raised in western culture are becoming increasingly more aware of their overall sense of mental exhaustion, their lack of discipline and their inability to focus on demand. they are willing to expend the energy necessary to experience inner peace and a quiet mind that is waiting to follow the direction of their will. they are realising that the endless struggle to fulfil the insatiable appetite of instant gratification is fruitless and tiresome at best. they are ripe for a new path in life and eager for a new set of instructions. this is the purpose of the practising mind. this book is accessible to readers of all philosophical backgrounds. regardless of your perspective, you will find the book's insights most compelling. you can find the wisdom of both the practising mind and the meditating mind in the combination package: the total mindset. for your convenience, the practising mind is now in mp3 cd audiobook format.

As a non-adhd spouse and father this was informational and helpful to me as I continue to try to understand the issues and learn about strategies that COULD be employed. By those with adhd. If they will acknowledge and own it. If they will read it. I am hopeful.lookin4sgauge
My son was diagnosed in first grade with ADD (he's now in sixth grade). He does not have hyperactivity, only focus problems. Accepting the ADD diagnosis can be a tough pill to swallow for a parent, and this book is EXCEPTIONAL at explaining the disorder and how it affects all different age groups. It talks about what to expect, treatment options available including therapies, homeopathic, and medicinal, and teachs you methods to deal with the disorder. I've rented the book from my local library twice and finally decided to purchase it because I refer back to it so much. This is definitely worth the investment. In fact, it may be some of the best money you spend. This same author wrote Driven to Distraction which is an earlier book. While it is still good, I feel Delivered From Distraction is much better. Definitely buy with confidence!kbc47eb
