3. Love On The Brain [Book]

Product Details:
An instant new york times bestsellera #1 libraryreads and indie next pick! from the new york times bestselling author of the love hypothesis comes a new steminist rom-com in which a scientist is forced to work on a project with her nemesis—with explosive results.like an avenging, purple-haired jedi bringing balance to the mansplained universe, bee königswasser lives by a simple code: what would marie curie do? if nasa offered her the lead on a neuroengineering project—a literal dream come true after years scraping by on the crumbs of academia—marie would accept without hesitation. duh. but the mother of modern physics never had to co-lead with levi ward. sure, levi is attractive in a tall, dark, and piercing-eyes kind of way. and sure, he caught her in his powerfully corded arms like a romance novel hero when she accidentally damseled in distress on her first day in the lab. but levi made his feelings toward bee very clear in grad school—archenemies work best employed in their own galaxies far, far away. now, her equipment is missing, the staff is ignoring her, and bee finds her floundering career in somewhat of a pickle. perhaps it’s her occipital cortex playing tricks on her, but bee could swear she can see levi softening into an ally, backing her plays, seconding her ideas…devouring her with those eyes. and the possibilities have all her neurons firing. but when it comes time to actually make a move and put her heart on the line, there’s only one question that matters: what will bee königswasser do?
Reviews:
Can I give is 0 stars? Love Hypothesis is the ONLY reason this book has any sort of HYPE. This book and characters are terrible. Its like the book has an agenda made by the author… MC is absolutely unlikable, feminist liberal with a nasty attitude and woe is me personality. Which absolutely insults and overshadows actual women in the real world, whose profession hold much respect for their intelligence in the fields this MC is. THIS BOOK IS GARBAGE. Just skip it. This author may be a ONE HIT WONDER. Like many Pandemic writers. Fingers crossed we get another enjoyable book like Love Hypothesis. I ended up returning this, couldn’t even finish a few chapters in.Literary Sassy Lassy

Reviews:
I am going overseas for a trip in a couple of months and felt this would be perfect for my 10 or so hour plane ride each way. It almost is… I like the assortment of games. I'm familiar with word searches and Sudoku, and like how this breaks the games into levels by section. I am not very good at crosswords and even the easier ones look kind of difficult to me. But it has ANSWERS! Yes, it has a cheat sheet at the back of the book. So I never have to worry about being too stumped. Cryptograms is a new one for me, but it looks fun. I think this will really help cut the boredom out of the flight, which is great. The only issue is that this is like a real sized book. It's probably about a half inch thick, which is fine. But it is about the size of a normal sheet of paper. I wasn't sure how I wanted to do my luggage. I think I'm supposed to get one checked, one carry on and one personal item. I'm not sure if this will fit well in my personal item I'm supposed to have at my feet. This is certainly too big to fit in any of my small purses. But I'll have to figure it out. It's still nice regardless.Amy
I have had a great time working in this puzzle book. The book offers six different types of puzzles. The puzzles come in three levels: easy, medium and hard. There is even a warm up section to familiarize yourself with the book. The book is large and I really like that. The print inside is also large. It is easy to fill in the crosswords when the puzzles are as big as the page! The puzzles throughout the book are challenging but solve-able. With the variety of puzzles in the book, you’re sure to be busy for a while.jnbpdt
The Ultimate Brain Health Puzzle Book for Adults is perfect for keeping your brain healthy while on trips, on weekends, and any time you're bored. I love the variety of various activities: sudoku, cryptograms, word searches, crosswords, and more! If you are traveling soon, you should definitely pack this puzzle book as it provides hours and hours of entertainment (if not days)! I also love that there are various difficulty levels for all ages. I highly recommend this book as a gift or a tool for brain exercises!coffeemamaonthego
10. Spark: The Revolutionary New Science Of Exercise And The Brain [Book]

Product Details:
A groundbreaking and fascinating investigation into the transformative effects of exercise on the brain, from the bestselling author and renowned psychiatrist john j. ratey, md.did you know you can beat stress, lift your mood, fight memory loss, sharpen your intellect, and function better than ever simply by elevating your heart rate and breaking a sweat? the evidence is incontrovertible: aerobic exercise physically remodels our brains for peak performance. ratey, m.d., embarks upon a fascinating and entertaining journey through the mind-body connection, presenting startling research that proves exercise is truly our best defense against everything from depression to add to addiction to aggression to menopause to alzheimer's. filled with amazing case studies (such as the revolutionary fitness program in naperville, illinois, which has put this school district of 19,000 kids first in the world of science test scores), spark is the first book to explore comprehensively the connection between exercise and the brain. it will change forever the way you think about your morning run — or, for that matter, simply the way you think.
Reviews:
We had to read this book in a fitness class at SRU. Shows how exercise can not only help you stave off dementia, but can actually help newly formed neurons actually adhere to the brain and help rebuild lost cells. It's a very good read and understandable to read and put into practice.susar-5
This is an amazing book on getting moving. I've always heard, and clearly believed in, the health benefits of exercising, but (apparently) that was never enough to get me moving. After reading this book (which talks about the mental, rather than physical, benefits of exercising), it finally clicked for me and I've been waking up at 5:45 each morning to exercise before the kids wake up (which is a miracle given that I'm not a morning person). If you're like me, struggling with motivation to get moving, I would definitely recommend giving this book a try. PS. For full disclosure, the book is a bit 'scientific', mentioning psychological, neurological, and biological studies that verify his hypothesis. Generally for me that was a bit much and often hard to understand. Still giving it 5 stars (less on 'entertaining') given the impact it had on me.Mateusz
11. A Thousand Brains: A New Theory Of Intelligence [Book]

Product Details:
Neuroscientist and computer engineer jeff hawkins argues that it's so hard to answer questions about the brain because our basic picture of how the brain works is wrong. in a thousand brains, hawkins takes a radically new approach to the brain, with stunning implications. hawkins' proposal, called the thousand brains theory of intelligence, is that your brain is organized into thousands upon thousands of individually computing units, called cortical columns. these columns all process information from the outside world in the same way, and each builds a complete model of the world. but because every column has different connections to the rest of the body, each has a unique frame of reference. your brain sorts out all those models by conducting a vote. the fundamental job of the brain, therefore, is not to build a single thought, but to manage the thousands of individual thoughts it has every moment. and once you understand how the brain works, it is a lot easier to make one yourself. hawkins is, above all, an engineer, and a thousand brains outlines how a new understanding of intelligence could lead to truly intelligent ai. combining cutting-edge theoretical neuroscience with an ambitious program for tomorrow's digital minds, a thousand brains heralds a revolution in the study of intelligence. it is a big-think book, in every sense of the word"–

Im not even close to conduct a review on Eric Kandal. I had to read his entire Principles of Neuroscience textbook while a therapy student at a graduate level and it was the hardest class I ever had taken. Dr Kandal is a master story teller and if you have an interest in the brain, memory or just what makes us tick I highly recommend this bookdapperdan30
I would highly recommend this to anyone who's looking to study neural science or even any aspect of biology, or perhaps even to try and understand how the mind/brain works. This book is written beautifully concise and educated in tandem with some detail to the horrors of a pre-WW2 nazi uprising (yes, the author survived the holocaust) — something quite unexpected of this book.superjen99
I LEARNED ABOUT THIS BOOK WHEN I LISTENED TO A RADIO INTERVIEW OF DR. KANDEL. THE INTERVIEW WAS SO FASCINATING THAT, THE SAME DAY, AS SOON AS I HAD ACCESS TO A COMPUTER, I ORDERED THE BOOK. THE SUBJECT IS DEEP AND GRIPPING AND IT IS WRITTEN IN A WAY THAT YOU DON'T NEED TO BE A SCIENTIST TO BE SUBMITTED TO READ IT. FRANKLY IT IS REALLY AMAZING THAT BRAIN SCIENCE CAN GRIP YOU WITH SUCH A STRENGTH AS READING A MISTERY NOVEL.guillusa

The instant new york times bestseller!" – the first book to address cognitive enhancement and alzheimer's prevention specifically in women–and to frame brain health as an essential component of women's health. – in this revolutionary book, dr. lisa mosconi, director of the women's brain initiative at weill cornell medical college, provides women with the first plan to address the unique risks of the female brain. – until now, medical research has focused on "bikini medicine," assuming that women are essentially men with breasts and tubes. yet women are far more likely than men to suffer from anxiety, depression, migraines, brain injuries, and strokes. they are also twice as likely to end their lives suffering from alzheimer's disease, even when their longer lifespans are taken into account. but in the past, the female brain has received astonishingly little attention and was rarely studied by medical researchers– resulting in a wealth of misinformation about women's health. – the xx brain confronts this crisis by revealing how the two powerful x chromosomes that distinguish women from men impact the brain first and foremost and by focusing on a key brain-protective hormone: estrogen. – taking on all aspects of women's health, including brain fog, memory lapses, depression, stress, insomnia, hormonal imbalances, and the increased risk of dementia, dr. mosconi introduces cutting-edge, evidence-based approaches to protecting the female brain, including a specific diet proven to work for women, strategies to reduce stress, and useful tips for restorative sleep. she also examines the controversy about soy and hormonal replacement therapy, takes on the perils of environmental toxins, and examines the role of our microbiome. perhaps best of all, she makes clear that it is never too late to take care of yourself. – the xx brain is a rallying cry for women to have full access to information regarding what is going on in their brains and bodies as well as a roadmap for the path to optimal, lifelong brain health.

the details of the placisticity of the brain and techniques for rebuilding the brain functions is amazing. This is a difinitive study or how to repair brain function, not only after stroke but in many other brain deficiency therapy applications. These techniques can enhance brain functionality from congenital deficit to trauma induced damage to the brain.racar-7124
Scientists are human beings and like most people, they can be set in their ways. Years ago, brain research seemed to indicate that the brain changes very little after childhood. Our personality, intelligence and talents are established then. Nonetheless, there was some evidence that this was not a cold and hard fact. Evidence that established scientists managed to ignore until a few pioneers forced them to see reality. This book is a collection of inspiring case studies about neuroplasticity, the ability of the brain to change and adapt to severe damage. There are too many details to share here, but there is a realization among leading neuroscientists that the brain can change much more than we imagined and that there is greater hope for stroke victims, people with attention deficit, autism and I suspect many other things not adequately research at this time. I am a math and science tutor and I have to say that some of the practical accomplishments of some of the researchers has inspired me to improve my program and treat the learning difficulties of my students more directly and effectively. The brain is incredibly resilient and once this is properly recognized in the therapy clinics, there must be a change in how we treat stokes, brain damage and other mental disorders. It's also a cautionary tale about not giving up on supposedly hopeless cases. There's even a story of a woman with half a brain, though somewhat impaired, one would not immediately notice that her condition is so extreme. I have to comment that alothough these stories are inspiring and based on sound science, there were numerous opportunities where the author failed to mention the many evolutionary implications of various brain characteristics. I can only assume Dr. Doidge is not well-versed in this area. One conclusion about brain plasticity is that it is more effective when the attention is focused. However, there was no mention of meditation or other techniques that help one do this. There is also no mention of the problem of epilepsy, both "naturally" occuring or as the side effect of sever brain injury. Perhaps too little is known at this point, but these issues seemed worth considering from my point of view. Thank you, -Ronronsclass
Norman Doidge was one of those responsible for bringing to the attention of the general public the fact that brain plasticity, and neuroplasticity, not only existed, but made the treatment of many neurological disorders, diseases and dysfunctions accessible, possible and successful. This book, his 2nd, gives wonderful and wonderfully clear examples and explanations of just some of the areas where doctors, scientists and patients working together have achieved remarkable, and scientifically well-documented, positive results using creative applications of the effects of neuroplasticity. If you're at all interested in understanding this hugely important area of the revolution in medicine and brain health, read this book. A real eye-opener and a very enjoyable read.indigo8
