I was struck by the flawed physical attributes of many of the characters: stuttering brother, hare-lipped sister, blind family friend, and wondered if all of these (except for the brother) really contributed to the plot. Initially, I found the relentless descriptive similes actually corny and repetitive. Fortunately, these began to disappear as the story progressed. The author repeatedly interjects details which are supposed to reinforce the time period, but they seem not to ring true. (I'm sure I did not, in the '60s, serve Kool-Aid at almost every meal.) That being said, it was an interesting read and was generally quite well-written.artistcollectingstuff

A well done psychological thriller. This might even be my favorite psychological thriller book! A woman commits a horrific crime and then goes silent, and is placed In a psychiatric ward. Everyone has given up on trying to reach her except for one young therapist. I love how the author dives into such a serious psychological response and helps us all try to understand it as we read. There's no judgement for those with mental illness and he tries to paint a picture for us what it would be like and to what extents humans will go to when they are fearful and scared. It was amazing to see how the author could develop a character so well even when she didn't speak! There are many surprises, that's probably all I should write! You'll love this!ajskid

This book is an easy and pleasant read. There is little to no suspense, horror or macabre. The "twist" will please some, but will be a bit disappointing to others. The middle of the book is very interesting, moves well, and is the main reason that I pushed my review to 4 stars. The rest of the book (chapters 1-3 or so, and the final twist and conclusion portions) were very run of the mill. This was the first book I purchased in a few years. I am trying to get back to my tradition of buying a bestseller written by an author I am unfamiliar with over the holidays. (This is how I discovered Dan Simmons, whose book "The Terror" stands as one of my most rewarding choices so far). This one was mostly a disappointment. My advice is to find it cheap or even shop for a used copy. There's a good chance you won't hang on to this one.Father Wolverine

Storyline/Overview – Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist and he is interested in Alice's story who has murdered her husband. He is determined to get to the details behind the crime. Even though the patient (Alice) is Silent throughout the narrative, the story progresses to spotlight her complex characteristics. "Unexpressed emotions never die. They are buried alive, and will come forth later, in uglier ways" BEST Psychological Thriller I have read in a long time! My opinion – Very well researched topic and the quotes at the start of every part of the book make sense at the end Every scenario described feels so realistic and I was amazed how much engrossed I was in this book Nice pace and a very easy to understand and read kind of language used The plot has a nice edginess and it wants you to keep turning pages to figure out what happens next! I was amazed at the flawless development of the characters, outstanding buildup and curiosity maintained and in fact increasing as pages turned! The final twist is the unique climax and no matter how much aware you are of the story, you'll still not be able to predict it and I was mind blown by that sole fact The chapters are well divided and the engrossing fast-paced read makes it a page turner for sure! I enjoyed this wonderful psychological drama ride and cannot believe it is debut novel by Alex. Kudos!! Conclusion – It is definitely a clever and intriguing story with a mind-blowing twist to enjoy! "Every human being was the result of a million different factors mixing together." If you enjoy Celeste Ng's novels, you need to read this! Dang dang dang dang! I had heard nothing but amazing things about this books so I bought it for myself as a birthday gift. I wanted to start it right away, but was reading other things so it just sat on my shelves until this past weekend. I was tossing up reading this one or another book and I am so glad I went with this one! This book did take me a bit of time to get into and I found myself thinking "oh boy, another beloved book that I am going to give three stars." I was so bummed. Once I became acquainted with all of the characters and their stories though, I feel hard into this one! In this story we follow a group of people, a group of moms with developmentally delayed children, a doctor, and a Korean family running The Miracle Submarine. One night the submarine explodes killing and injuring several people. Throughout the book you follow the court case and see just how many people are hiding information and harboring secrets. I can't write a synopsis to do this one justice haha just read the one Goodreads provides. Although this one took me a while to get in to, once I was in, I was there and ended up loving everything about this! The characters all had so many sides and secrets! You could sympathize and also be mad at everyone, the twists were really well handled and developed, the court room scenes were amazing (you can definitely tell this was written by a lawyer!) I just highly recommend this one!Samantha

Charlotte and Reed are two complex characters that have each have their own issues but have such an amazing story. It's a sweet love story where the characters are well written and loveable. Reed is guarded and the reasoning is surprising and not what I expected. I loved every minute of it and will not hesitate to pick up a book by these authors.Rharrill

Slaughter's characters are complex; all have scars, both mental and physical, all are strong but betray very human flaws; there are no saints here, but these characters are easy to care about. You know how most amazing romance novels in the young adults section (I'm 23 so I'd think I'm a young adult) always end up with good story telling but skips the… spicy parts? Well this book gives you everything. Amazing pacing. Actually cares enough to let you know each character in a natural way. I can't put down my book. I only forced it down because I'm about to finish and I want to buy the next book immediately! But for those who get triggered by rough intimacy or just anything around that area don't get it. This book had me hooked from start to finish. It reminds me of a Gillian Flynn novel with all its twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat, second guessing your assumptions of what you think you have figured out. Definitely a fantastic psychological thriller. It’s been adapted into a movie that is supposed to be released soon, but I would highly recommend reading the book beforehand because A.J. Finn develops the characters and atmosphere so beautifully and eerily, creating a picture that would be taken away by the visual representation of a movie.lachelle.a

After seeing the show on Netflix and playing The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt game I wanted to get into the source material. The first two books are great for that because they are a compilation of short stories that don't exactly connect or relate to one another. Also, they read pretty easily as well. It doesn't feel like you're reading an accounting of historical reference, kind of like how Lord of the Rings reads. It is grounded enough in today's nomenclature that it is pretty easy to jump in and understand. Overall I recommend to anyone looking for a different medieval-type of story to get lost in, quickly!Nigel

This book is touted as an introduction to "The Witcher" series. A prequel if you will. It is presented as a novel but in reality, it is essentially a collection of short stories about Geralt of Rivia, who is better known as The Witcher. I wanted to like this more. It comes highly recommended as a great dark fantasy story with swords and sorcery, dungeons, and dragons. It has all those things, but it doesn't come off as very exciting or enchanting. I was disappointed in the book as a whole although some parts were interesting enough to hold my attention to the end. I realize that this is not considered the first book in the series. That would be "Blood of Elves". I may give this series another chance by reading "Blood of Elves" but if I do not see an improvement that will be the last book I read in this series.Michael

The book starts off a bit confusing and slow. If you are not familiar with the Witcher universe, it may be a bit much to be introduced to so much at once. This book is actually just a ton of short stories in the form of one book. That being said, I like the how the author reveals just a little bit of lore in each chapter that gives you more knowledge of the world he has crafted while offering compelling short stories that stand by themselves. The last few chapters I binged because the book was so great.MATT

I was disappointed in the book. I do have to say it is well written and engaging. But I cant help but think about how one sided it is and the extrapolation of factual data to prop up thoughts based on religion and anecdotal stories. Susan discusses many concepts that are fascinating about how the brain works but no explanation on their connection to being an introvert. Just more weak links and her own thoughts of pigeon holing someone's traits and attributes. Although I have only given two stars, I would give it a read to get thinking about different people in the world.BEBEBBOOKS

Quiet is an interesting book and has some interesting science about how people concentrate and work but I find it somewhat odd. The author is very attached to the idea of Rosa Parks as an introvert and brings this up multiple times in a way I don't find particularly palatable. She also uses an Einstein quote about working alone that really stuck out to me because if you read anything about Einstein and Milvera it's that all their friends spoke of them constantly working on their theories together. It feel like it was going to answer a question, but then it didn't come to a specific conclusion except "we need both types of people" and for some reason that felt like a let down. I found all the "are you an introvert/extravert" questionnaires funny because I answered yes on both and never got a clear answer to what that meant. A lot of the statements made too sounded like they had links to ADHD and autism but it was never mentioned which I found odd. Still it was interesting read & worth it if you're interesting in this kind of science.R

This gives an excellent insight into the personality type of a huge proportion of the population, their thought patterns, motivations, ways of responding and behaving that extroverts just do not understand. Everyone these days is supposed to be extrovert now and so many people are having to pretend to be extroverts in order to be accepted and progress at work. This was not the case until recent times and it is exhausting for those who are introverts to have to conform to this. Being quiet is normal for all these introverts but they are told that is not desirable. When assessments of children and adults take place being 'quiet' is considered a negative quality and the strong focus and thought processes of introverts are overlooked. Instead professionals and others tell introverts to speak up and basically turn themselves into an extrovert types, which is not possible. Consequently, their strengths and attributes, their input and ideas are often wasted. This is an excellent book for everyone to read – it explains to extroverts as well as introverts themselves, why they hate open plan offices and group meetings and need space as well as the company of others. All those working with children and young people in schools and colleges, and employing adults in workplaces should readthis. I liked this one a lot! I found it more enjoyable than “The Family Upstairs”. I’ve read others saying they could predict the ending early on, but I actually did not. Now with that said, I didn’t think it would be the true obvious choice. I actually found the true story behind it all to be rather sad. Bullying is definitely a problem, and while I know two wrongs don’t make a right, it did somehow feel like karma was served. And it also felt a bit sad knowing that Jenna’s mom really was paranoid beyond reason. It’s a quick read, so if you’re a fan of Jewell’s work, I definitely recommend this one, too!kerry.b

You may have read "Then She was Gone" last year, this is Lisa Jewell's latest book. In a beautiful and colorful neighborhood, the neighbors are all suspicious of each other. The book begins with a murder and then starts the story back in time leading up to the fateful event. Thankfully, the neighbors are always spying on each other so you are able to hear the suspicions of everyone as they play out. Every person has their own issues (and sins) and so it was hard for me to decide who I was rooting for while reading this book. Enjoyable, you might be able to predict it by the end (still enjoyable though). If you are patiently waiting for your next five star thriller read, this may hold you over.ajskid

This was a psychological thriller like no other that I have ever read. Just when I thought I had things figured out, the author threw in another unexpected twist. The characters were good and evil or innocent and unassuming. My favorite character was Joey who metamorphosed into a lovable sister by the end of the book. Her brother Jack was almost an absent character, but he played a big role in the actual plot. I heartily disliked Tom Fitzwilliam from the beginning because he seemed such a shady character. His son, Freddie, seemed to be a neglected loner, so he is another one that the readers will need to watch carefully as the plot unfolds. This book's plot is developed like a thread that is unraveling from a garment. You see the thread and you pull on it and think that you have found the problem. The author is a master at misleading clues and innuendoes. This is a fantastic book for those who enjoy psychological suspense! It is so good that you will want to buy it on a weekend and plan to spend the weekend absorbed by it! The author keeps the medical terminology to a minimum making it a great read for those wanting to find out more on ageing. I really enjoyed his enlightenment to the fact that ageing is a disease but is not acknowledged. Instead, the focus is on fighting cancer, diabetes, dementia, etc.Doonerkabab

"Politics doesn't have to be what people think it is. It can be something more." To say that this book is outside of my comfort zone is an understatement. I never thought I'd voluntarily read anything classified as a political memoir. But it's Obama and I was interested in what he had to say, even if I had to sift through politics that I previously haven't either cared about or understood to hear it. "This, I was coming to realize, was the nature of the presidency: Sometimes your most important work involved the stuff nobody noticed." I was surprised by how much I loved this book. I learned so much about the ins and outs of political decisions and the fact that I found the details interesting says a lot about the quality of the writing. But the human stories were what really sucked me in. This is a book where a football is not a football, where Dr. No scrutinises all things ethical to avoid scandal ("If it sounds fun, you can't go.") and the president is the one who brings out the cake for people's birthdays. Also, and I may be the only one who thinks this is kinda cool, although I'd hate it if anyone was paying that much attention to me, "Renegade to Secondary Hold" was Secret Service code for Obama going to the bathroom. Make no mistake: this is a heavy book, providing in depth details of decisions relating to the financial crisis, war, healthcare, foreign policy, immigration, human rights and a whole bunch of other unfolding crises that wind up on a president's to do list. I found myself getting bogged down in the details of the financial crisis and for a few days I'd catch myself daydreaming about some of the books I could be reading instead. Everything after that, though, I couldn't get enough of. Having read little else for almost two weeks, part of me feels like I've always been reading this book and another part of me is sad that it wasn't even longer. This is also literally a very heavy book and an awkward one to hold; I lay in bed the first night, when I hadn't even finished the first hundred pages, trying to figure out why my hands hurt so much. It turns out that simply holding onto this book is its own workout. There's a lot of serious in this book but that's not to say there aren't some smiles and misty eye moments along the way. I chuckled when the secure mobile communications system broke down at the wrong moment, necessitating a very important and very serious phone call being made instead on "a device that had probably also been used to order pizza." I lost count of the times I could have easily wandered into ugly cry territory: the outcome of the DREAM Act, when Obama visited soldiers as they recovered from injuries sustained serving their country, personal family moments. I'm wondering how it will be possible to fit everything else in only one more book as this one leaves readers in May 2011, but I'm really looking forward to reading the second volume. I have mixed feelings about this book. I was definitely hooked wanting to know more and more as I read, especially with the writing style as she’s talking to someone throughout it almost like a reflection, but I felt conflicted a lot of the time based off the choices being made throughout the storyline. Without spoiling it, the ending did make me cry not because it was worthy of a cry but because I felt disappointed in what had happened. I guess I just didn’t like the choices that were made and what resulted of them. If you’re on the fence about this book, wait for it to go on sale or something. It’s a good book just not a “you need to read this because it’s life changing” type of book. Overall, good weekend read.Jessica

I really, really didn't like this book. The dialog and the language was trite and immature at best. I felt like I was reading a Young Adult novel. The story was uninteresting and tedious. And, as for the love story…there really wasn't one. She was a muse for him and she married another man. I think it was just an obsession more than love. I put my book in my recycling bin. I didn't even want to recommend it to anyone or put it in the Little Library of where we live. It had no redeeming social value at all.cherbug610

This book is the worst book I ever read. It was compared to books that I love like the "One Day" series. This is literally an unlikable love story where the lead mourns the most toxic relationship ever for the whole story at the expense of every decent person in their life. Terrific book as an introduction to the inner workings of Amazon.com Whilst it may not be perfectly well written, and the author may not have been exhaustive in his research, it hits its mark as a primer or introduction to the topic of Amazon.
