1. The Poppy War: A Novel [Book]

Product Details:
“i have no doubt this will end up being the best fantasy debut of the year […] i have absolutely no doubt that [kuang’s] name will be up there with the likes of robin hobb and n.k. jemisin.” — booknest – a library journal, paste magazine, vulture, book – bub, and entropy best books of 2018 pick! washington post "5 best science fiction and fantasy novel of 2018" pick! a bustle "30 best fiction books of 2018" pick! a brilliantly imaginative talent makes her exciting debut with this epic historical military fantasy, inspired by the bloody history of china’s twentieth century and filled with treachery and magic, in the tradition of ken liu’s grace of kings and n.k. jemisin’s inheritance trilogy. – when rin aced the keju—the empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the academies—it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from rooster province could pass without cheating; to rin’s guardians, who believed they’d finally be able to marry her off and further their criminal enterprise; and to rin herself, who realized she was finally free of the servitude and despair that had made up her daily existence. that she got into sinegard—the most elite military school in nikan—was even more surprising. – but surprises aren’t always good. – because being a dark-skinned peasant girl from the south is not an easy thing at sinegard. targeted from the outset by rival classmates for her color, poverty, and gender, rin discovers she possesses a lethal, unearthly power—an aptitude for the nearly-mythical art of shamanism. exploring the depths of her gift with the help of a seemingly insane teacher and psychoactive substances, rin learns that gods long thought dead are very much alive—and that mastering control over those powers could mean more than just surviving school. – for while the nikara empire is at peace, the federation of mugen still lurks across a narrow sea. the militarily advanced federation occupied nikan for decades after the first poppy war, and only barely lost the continent in the second. and while most of the people are complacent to go about their lives, a few are aware that a third poppy war is just a spark away . . . rin’s shamanic powers may be the only way to save her people. but as she finds out more about the god that has chosen her, the vengeful phoenix, she fears that winning the war may cost her humanity . . . and that it may already be too late.

Reviews:
Samantha Shannon is one of my FAVOURITE authors. I've read the three books that are out in The Bone Season septology MULTIPLE TIMES and I'm OBSESSED. I follow her on social media and I'd been hearing about a world filled with dragons and female power for a while and while I was excited, it wasn't until I saw that JAW-DROPPING cover that I knew, with all certainty, that I WOULD DEFINITELY BE READING THIS BOOK. So, when Bloomsbury India send me an advance copy, I jumped in joy and dived in almost immediately. IN A NUTSHELL: The Priory of the Orange Tree is one of the BEST fantasy novels I've read in a while, especially in terms of world-building. The religions, the kingdoms and the politics usually don't intrigue me as much as the characters do, but Priory was a perfect blend of it all. I was as invested in the fate of the kingdom and the people as I was in the characters narrating the story. I loved the magic, the dragons, the lore, the romance, the friendship and the political intrigue. In a nutshell, that ended up being no so nutshell-y, The Priory of the Orange Tree was everything I expected it to be AND MORE. THINGS I LOVED: 1. EAD AND SABRAN. These two were my FAVOURITE characters and I loved them and their story. 2. In this world, both same and different sex partners and were the norm, except for royalty because of the whole line of succession reason, but companionship was based on love, not society-based gender constructs and it was wonderful 3. THE WATER DRAGONS WERE BRILLIANT and I LOVED Tane and her dragon's story. 4. THE WORLD, THE RELIGIONS AND THE PALACES were all brilliant. I cannot describe how much I became a part of this world while reading this 800-page beauty, but I did. It was probably the most "I'm a part of this world now" experience I've ever had. THINGS I DIDN'T LOVE AS MUCH: 1. Niclays Roos and his storyline seemed like filler at best. Full Review on A Thousand Words A Million BooksAditi - ATWAMB

Reviews:
I started playing the video game the end of October before learning that the games tell the story of what happens AFTER the books, which I believe there is five of them. I told my husband he should have led with that! I love male authors because they have a way of getting straight to the point without losing the substance of the story where female authors tend to be a little detail driven and drawn out. This book follows that straight to the point aspect so you're given a lot of information in the first few chapters. For anyone who is a fan of the game or loves a good fantasy action drama with rich and enduring characters and relationship [not all of them romantic] I highly recommend this book. It's only rated a 4 star because the translation from Polish to English does not always crossover well but the books have definitely solidified my fandom to this world!JOSEPH
This set is a great place to start to begin reading the Witcher stories, however another book was actually added by the author to technically be a prequel to these. Do your research first and start with that book. Although technically you don't have to but it helps. This set is very nice and was the best priced anywhere I could find at the time. BAM got it to me safe and sound and wrapped well but took forever to get it, well over a month. Stories are fantastic and since there are so many reviews on them I won't bother, this review is more to the collection being a good deal and a nice have.Tammy

New york times bestseller * the stunning conclusion to robin hobb's fitz and the fool trilogy, which began with fool's assassin and fool's quest "every new robin hobb novel is a cause for celebration. along with millions of her other fans, i delight in every visit to the six duchies, the rain wilds, and the out islands, and can't wait to see where she'll take me next."–george r. r. martin more than twenty years ago, the first epic fantasy novel featuring fitzchivalry farseer and his mysterious, often maddening friend the fool struck like a bolt of brilliant lightning. now new york times bestselling author robin hobb brings to a momentous close the third trilogy featuring these beloved characters in a novel of unsurpassed artistry that is sure to endure as one of the great masterworks of the genre. fitz's young daughter, bee, has been kidnapped by the servants, a secret society whose members not only dream of possible futures but use their prophecies to add to their wealth and influence. bee plays a crucial part in these dreams–but just what part remains uncertain. as bee is dragged by her sadistic captors across half the world, fitz and the fool, believing her dead, embark on a mission of revenge that will take them to the distant island where the servants reside–a place the fool once called home and later called prison. it was a hell the fool escaped, maimed and blinded, swearing never to return. for all his injuries, however, the fool is not as helpless as he seems. he is a dreamer too, able to shape the future. and though fitz is no longer the peerless assassin of his youth, he remains a man to be reckoned with–deadly with blades and poison, and adept in farseer magic. and their goal is simple: to make sure not a single servant survives their scourge.
Reviews:
this was a fantastic/ depressing as hell finish to a series of something like 14 books. i had to stop 100 pages out cause i was painful de-hydrated from crying too much. this stands in a league of it's own. i'm not saying it's better than say The Hobbit or other fantasy novels but there's something so different and special about the story of Fitz and his world. gone through alot of pain and joy to get here and i'll think but on the time i spent reading this series with fond memories. farewell Fitzmike
Robin Hobb IMHO is the best fantasy writer, ever! I have read her complete series 3 times and still get moved by her writing! She develops characters so completely that you feel a part of their world and know each intimately!! Now if only someone from Hollywood would read them, endless epic movies could be the result!Mike

Reviews:
After seeing the show on Netflix and playing The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt game I wanted to get into the source material. The first two books are great for that because they are a compilation of short stories that don't exactly connect or relate to one another. Also, they read pretty easily as well. It doesn't feel like you're reading an accounting of historical reference, kind of like how Lord of the Rings reads. It is grounded enough in today's nomenclature that it is pretty easy to jump in and understand. Overall I recommend to anyone looking for a different medieval-type of story to get lost in, quickly!Nigel
This book is touted as an introduction to "The Witcher" series. A prequel if you will. It is presented as a novel but in reality, it is essentially a collection of short stories about Geralt of Rivia, who is better known as The Witcher. I wanted to like this more. It comes highly recommended as a great dark fantasy story with swords and sorcery, dungeons, and dragons. It has all those things, but it doesn't come off as very exciting or enchanting. I was disappointed in the book as a whole although some parts were interesting enough to hold my attention to the end. I realize that this is not considered the first book in the series. That would be "Blood of Elves". I may give this series another chance by reading "Blood of Elves" but if I do not see an improvement that will be the last book I read in this series.Michael
The book starts off a bit confusing and slow. If you are not familiar with the Witcher universe, it may be a bit much to be introduced to so much at once. This book is actually just a ton of short stories in the form of one book. That being said, I like the how the author reveals just a little bit of lore in each chapter that gives you more knowledge of the world he has crafted while offering compelling short stories that stand by themselves. The last few chapters I binged because the book was so great.MATT

Great book for fans of Lord of the Rings and Guardians of the Galaxy. It really sets the foundation for Aveyard’s newest trilogy. Reviews:
I will never be able, to even put into words, how truly BRILLIANT this book series is. I have never read ANYTHING like it. WHAT an imagination. This has to be, the most underrated book out there, that TRULY deserves to be read! The imagination of this Author, is like nothing I have ever read before and isn't that what we are ALL looking for? That one of a kind story, that is like no other, that takes us away, keeping us totally enthralled, never wanting to put it down. Let me put it this way, in the very beginnings of this book, you find out that a particular character has already died and when it comes to the point, later in the books, where I found out how they died, I cried. I never cry over books, yet even knowing this character was already dead, I cried when I read the scene. THAT is what an amazing Author this is. This book is filled with a unique magic, one of a kind creatures and characters that will keep you guessing and I find it a shame, that because this book is not filled with excessive amounts of sex and violence, that it is not receiving the credit, it REALLY TRULY deserves!! ALL 5 stars ***** Read this book series, give it a chance. I admit it starts off a bit slow and it also hops back and forth in time but that is part of it's charm for me. Be patient, let it get going, introducing you to a world like no other, FINISH the ENTIRE series, you won't be sorry!!!Robin P

" After the castle came down in Rithfold, Chaol and Nesryn have sailed to Antica to try to rally more allies for Aelin and Dorian, and to seek the legendary healers to try to get Chaol walking again. But Chaol is broken, beyond just his physical limitations and Nesryn is the windseeker, she was not meant to be caged. Their paths end up taking them down different directions than they had expected, but they know Antica is there only hope. I didn't expect to like this book. I liked Chaol in the first couple books, and in fact was not a huge fan of Rowan to begin with, but then Chaol turned into a mopey man and I always found Nesryn a little boring. However, I think what Maas did with Chaols story was amazing. Sure he still moped, but he was broken, and the story was a tale of him repairing himself. I still find Nesryn a tad boring, but even her story got good towards the end. A lot of things were answered in this book, so while it is a companion novel, I'd say reading it is extremely important to he overall storyAmanda

Reviews:
I LOVED THIS BOOK! The magic system felt so familiar yet so different and I appreciated that so much. Lee's written was easy to read and listening to the audiobook enhanced the experience in a positive way. At times it did feel info dumpy, which is understandable and I didn't mind it too much because I believe Lee's intention was to help us understand the history of the impending war and Sirscha's life. I will say, and this is a SPOILER, that the plot twist felt rushed. I felt like it was just chucked in there and a quick mission took place and the guy was killed but it felt underwhelming and not enough action (especially for a book that is jam packed with action). Will I be reading the sequel? YES I CAN'T WAIT!!Sarah A

"The Martians of Science: Five Physicists Who Changed the Twentieth Century", by Istavan Hargittai, Oxford Univ. Press, NY 2006. ISBN 13 978-0-19-517845-6. HC 314/240 pages includes Preface, Contents, Intro., Appendix 12 pgs., Notes 36 pgs., Biblio. 6 pgs., Chronologies 7 pgs., Index 12 pgs. 9.5" x 6.5"A cleverly devised treatise details five of the Worlds' most notable theoretical physicists – all began as Jewish Hungarian citizens of Budapest who, in time, migrated to the U.S., toiled collectively and separately to develop strategic defense systems including the atomic hydrogen bombs, computers, modernized Airforce, and establishing or working at the AEC, NASA, JPL, Manhattan Project, Livermore, Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, etc.Convenient attribute of this writing is its apportionment into six chapters to reveal their progressive transition from early childhood into figures of greatness and thence onto their waning years. It reflects their family influences, societal environs, politico-economic conditions, scholastic opportunities, and acceptance into American cultural institutions as Princeton, Harvard, Berkeley, Caltech and the U.S. military. The plethora of B W photographs contributes enormously to the book's value as does appendix of "Sampler of Quotable Martians". Perhaps most importantly are descriptors of personal interactions amongst the Martians themselves. This book embraces exciting history, racism, psychological ploys of embattled nations bureaucracies, and the search for peace amidst glorious and sometimes inglorious purlieus. That the author is an acclaimed writer, recognized scientist, Professor of chemistry, authored several dozen books and is personally acquainted with and interviewed several of the 'Martians' is a plus. Its a good read and the price is right.niŝs.r
I read The Martian via audio book. Going into The Martian, I didn't know what to expect. I was around when it won a Goodreads Choice in 2014. Since that moment it has been on my to-read list and I was always very curious of it. I recently I saw previews for The Martian film. I finally understood what the story was about and my curiosity grew immensely. The idea fascinated me and as a Psych major, I wondered: what would being deserted in space do to your head? Then a good friend of mine read it and though she told me she wasn't sure if I would like it, I knew it was time to read it any way and I figured all the space and science jargon would be easier to get through if I went the audio route. I was blown away by home much I actually liked this book. Yes, some of that science stuff and numbers were a bit hard to get through and I found myself unconsciously tuning some of it out. My favorite part of the entire book was Mark's sass. He is a very sassy character and humorous! I found myself laughing out loud a couple times. The tale is an on-the-edge-of-your-seat read. Mark meets many trials which he very cleverly works through. The part that I was most looking forward to was obviously the psychological side of it which was touched on a few times but perhaps not as much as I hoped however I loved that Mark was perfectly honest in his log as to how he was feeling with an I am screwed and I'm going to die now! screw you Mars! attitude. At the end of the book I found myself cheering with everyone else! It left me feeling good and accomplished. (view spoiler) I will warn that this book contains strong language. I recommend this book to anyone who fascinated by space, those who love numbers and science and anyone who is in the mood for a bit of a challenging read.krista.t
The Martian is about an astronaut, Mark Watney, who is the first to walk on Mars. After a sandstorm his crew had to leave him, assumed dead. He survived and the story is about how he survived. Mark is a botanist and mechanical engineer, so the only way he can think of to stay alive is through growing potatoes. Why potatoes- Because it has 770 calories per kilo. So as we read along, he calculates and tries solving many problems that come into play. His dark sense of humour saves him at times. I read this book, because I have seen the movie and it was so good, I had to buy the book. This was also my first time in reading a science fiction book. I must applaud Andy Weir, the way he writes this book, is just astounding. With his knowledge of being a software engineer, his maths and physics, scientifically woven into this story, you would think this would be so believable. His plot twists in this book is superb which you don't see coming. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the engineering industry who like to know how things work, readers who like space, sci fi fans (and apparently Andy Weir is a Doctor Who fan and has seen all the episodes). Word of warning, since it does have dark humour in this book, there is a bit of swearing and crass language, but not overbearing.Pauline
