5. Inside Apple: How America's Most Admired–And Secretive–Company Really Works [Book]

Product Details:
Inside apple reveals the secret systems, tactics and leadership strategies that allowed steve jobs and his company to churn out hit after hit and inspire a cult-like following for its products.if apple is silicon valley's answer to willy wonka's chocolate factory, then author adam lashinsky provides readers with a golden ticket to step inside. in this primer on leadership and innovation, the author will introduce readers to concepts like the "dri" (apple's practice of assigning a directly responsible individual to every task) and the top 100 (an annual ritual in which 100 up-and-coming executives are tapped a la skull & bones for a secret retreat with company founder steve jobs). based on numerous interviews, the book offers exclusive new information about how apple innovates, deals with its suppliers and is handling the transition into the post jobs era. lashinsky, a senior editor at large for fortune, knows the subject cold: in a 2008 cover story for the magazine entitled the genius behind steve: could operations whiz tim cook run the company someday he predicted that tim cook, then an unknown, would eventually succeed steve jobs as ceo.while inside apple is ostensibly a deep dive into one, unique company (and its ecosystem of suppliers, investors, employees and competitors), the lessons about jobs, leadership, product design and marketing are universal. they should appeal to anyone hoping to bring some of that apple magic to their own company, career, or creative endeavor.
Reviews:

Reviews:
This is my first Mac but not my first Apple product. I did my research and decided that the Air was the right model for me as I don't do a lot of video editing, so didn't need the Pro model and the new M2 chip looked more capable of dealing anything I could throw at it. The M2 Mac Air looks stunning and feels nearly as light as my iPad Pro with the keyboard, the keyboard on the Air is fantastic and the typing feels much better than my work surface pro 3 laptop. Being Apple everything just connected and synced perfectly which was one of the reasons for getting a Mac, The battery life is exactly as stated, great, The boot up speed is super quick and the screen is very clear, I've only used it inside so don't have to turn the brightness up past half way. Being fan less it is silent and I haven't felt it getting warm at all but I haven't really pushed it but compared to my surface pro 3 where the fan cuts in quite often whilst doing similar tasks I'm really impressed. But I've had some issues getting used to menu paths etc as I've only ever worked on windows based machines but I did think having used Apple products for years it would be easier but somethings are quite different from Windows, also a lot of the Apps are either iPhone or iPad versions so not compatible with Mac, so apps like Netflix & Disney work through safari and you can make a shortcut on your desktop but no App! Overall though I'm very happy with M2 MacBook Air.
I have to say I’m very impressed. I don’t usually write reviews but this one I’ve been meaning to. So far my new laptop has been so amazing. 2 years ago I bought 3 Dells. (Homeschooling) they were so slow and close out windows, less than a year I had to be on the phone with technical support. 1 had to be replaced, and the beginning of this school year they hardly work. Getting pictures to download was a com joke we had to email them from our iPhones to get them saved to files. Currently now only one still works and is no longer covered under warranty. It takes 10 minutes to load a simple page. With that being said, my MacBook, saved 5 iPhone photo files (a lot Of photos like thousands) within 15 minutes per phone!!! Also comes with some really Cool features, they’re clouddocs, amazing for homeschool graphing for like grade logs, gpas, attendance. When someone texts me it pops up on the computer so I can respond without going to get my phone. And it’s very simple to operate once you learn the programs. Overall very pleased and was the best purchase of 2022!user101932
B&H sent my package through DHL – this is the best option if you live abroad – international orders are not a problem – with DHL you are assured to receive your items from B&H. Purchased a 16 gigabytes of ram and a 1 terabyte ssd – I may have been able to get by with a 512 but I prefer local storage and cloud storage over external hard drives. It is cheaper to get a 256 and purchase a terabyte external ssd. The MacBook Air was purchased to replace an older MacMini which can no longer be upgraded but is needed to run older applications. The Air runs smoothly with no noticable lag on any of the apps I use specifically google drive, pages, mail, google mail, audiobook binder, iMovie, simplemind, Splashtop, WhatsApp, zoom, pixlmator, handbrake, Plex, keynote, numbers, and vlc. I do some video encoding but the files are not more than 15 minutes so the hit to the cpu is minimal – so I don't need the cooling of a pro model. I appreciate the size and screen which is not far off from the 13 inch pro model – in most indoor environments the 400 nits is enough for what I need to accomplish – still next to a an iPad you will notice the screen is not as bright. I have owned a 2018 MacBook Air and this M1 version is noticeably more responsive opening apps and encoding video and audio files – the keyboard is good and not a problem – although I am not a touch typer I do prefer limited travel as I have grown accustomed to typing on iPad screens for extended periods. if you need MacOS and prefer a lighter laptop and do not need to encode video or hundreds of jpegs or pngs then this is your machine – if longer battery life is important and you don't mind a Touch Bar then go with the MacBook Pro – Either way you will not be dissapointed.Kenneth

Reviews:
I will never forget some books reading with my kids and this is one of them! I have triplet girls. The oldest has had to have tubes placed in her ears. She didn't hear well for awhile and we thought she was a bit behind because of it. I would take extra time helping her with her homework, reading with her and such. One day I was cooking dinner and she was sitting on the floor with this book. I realized she was reading it loud and clear, all by herself! I also realized that she was using her hearing problem to her advantage for more attention! LMBO! She had to do what she had to do to compete for attention in a house with six kids. Every once in awhile now she pulls it out and asks for help reading it! I now see it as a cue she feels she needs more attention. It's a very special book for us!sarah.h
I just got this book for my 5 year old son for Christmas. I looked it over and thought it was the cutest childrens book I have seen. You can not go wrong with Dr, Seuss. It not only teaches sight words and rhyme, but also counting and sorting objects as well. My 1 year old and I use this book while the 5 year old is at school (oops, I am telling my secrets now) and he is learning to count the objects and can look at the pictures and tell some of the story.tamitha.s
My kids love this book. It's okay. It's an easy read with cute graphics, but the ending is just weird. Every time I read it, I expect there to be some resolution to the obvious tension of competition between the characters, and then… there's not. I wouldn't recommend giving this as a gift.megan.m

Product Details:
Apple follows the life of an apple throughout the year, demonstrating the cyclical patterns in nature. the youngest readers will delight in following the journey of the bright red apple–the only splash of color in the otherwise black-and-white illustrations–as it travels from tree, to harvest, to snack, to compost, and finally to sprout. a single word complements each illustration, urging early readers to reflect on each stage in the apple's life. apple is acclaimed cut-paper artist nikki mcclure's very first book, originally self-published and sold in a limited edition of just 200 copies. now, 16 years later, it is available in wide release, and fans will relish the chance to own the book that launched mcclure's signature style. praise for apple starred review "run your fingers across this satisfyingly square book's cover and feel the subtle, smooth outlines of a ripe apple and simple letters. you'll immediately sense the solid, soothing storytelling at work inside, achieved through astute manipulations of paper." –kirkus reviews, starred review "the art is gorgeous, the text is one-word-per-page minimal and the "story" is sprinkled with welcome surprises." –the new york times book review "the emphasis on the cycle of life makes this a useful classroom and library addition." –school library journal

15. The Four: The Hidden Dna Of Amazon, Apple, Facebook, And Google (Galloway Scott)(Paperback)

Product Details:
New york times bestseller usa today bestselleramazon, apple, facebook, and google are the four most influential companies on the planet. just about everyone thinks they know how they got there. just about everyone is wrong. for all that’s been written about the four over the last two decades, no one has captured their power and staggering success as insightfully as scott galloway. instead of buying the myths these companies broadcast, galloway asks fundamental questions. how did the four infiltrate our lives so completely that they’re almost impossible to avoid (or boycott)? why does the stock market forgive them for sins that would destroy other firms? and as they race to become the world’s first trillion-dollar company, can anyone challenge them? in the same irreverent style that has made him one of the world’s most celebrated business professors, galloway deconstructs the strategies of the four that lurk beneath their shiny veneers. he shows how they manipulate the fundamental emotional needs that have driven us since our ancestors lived in caves, at a speed and scope others can’t match. and he reveals how you can apply the lessons of their ascent to your own business or career. whether you want to compete with them, do business with them, or simply live in the world they dominate, you need to understand the four.

Reviews:
I personally purchased this same MacBook Air (MBA) but with 512GB of storage. It's the same exact unit. I liked it so much I purchased this one for my wife. She didn't need the extra GPU core or storage space. Overall, she has enjoyed this notebook more than the Wintel system we previously had. Apple's battery life estimates are more accurate, they're actually a little on the conservative side. Our previous Wintel systems (Dell XPS 13 2-in-1) were advertised with 14 hours of streaming battery life. The only way to hit that number was to turn the screen brightness down to 25%, turn off Bluetooth, flipping the screen around so the keyboard and trackpad were off, putting the system into power efficiency mode, and using MS Edge or the Netflix app (which limits streaming to 720p in Windows). Even then we couldn't ever fully get the 14 hours of advertised battery life and that was with 1080p notebooks. The MBA has a higher resolution display, a processor that performs better than the 11th gen Core i7 CPUs in our other units (that also had 16GB of RAM), and we can easily push 15 hours of real-world use with our systems. We no longer must bring a charging brick wherever we go. The battery life is longer if you just stream video content or play videos that have been downloaded. Another surprise with the MBA was the speaker quality. I'm not sure what Apple is doing but their speakers are better than what's in most 17" notebooks. The speakers in our previous 13" system were terrible, these put those to shame. Apple also put a faster SSD in these. Writing and reading large files take less time, the SSDs in our MBAs are almost 3X faster than our other systems (which were more expensive). The webcam is passible, I wish it were better. The image processor in the M1 helps with that though. Everyday performance with the 7 GPU M1 is fine, even for mobile gaming. macOS can now run iPad and iPhone apps, if the developers unlock them, and we haven't had any issues with that. 8GB of RAM is more than enough for everyday use with the M1. Even when we are stressing our systems, they only use 6GB of RAM. My only complaint is that the design is dated. It's essentially the same design that Apple released in 2018, just with a better keyboard. You get the same two USB4/TB3 ports, the same display, the same trackpad, the same physical webcam, and a better keyboard. I wouldn't normally have any issues with a classic design but it's almost 4 years old now and it has been cloned to death. Every other major PC maker has released a notebook that's a silver, dark gray, or gold slab of aluminum. I want color again with my PCs, like the old iBook G3 days. Even a white system would be different than the same three colors Apple has stuck with for far too long. The screen bezels are large, and the system is begging to be updated with a 14" display. Slimming the bezels while keeping the same form factor would allow for a 14" display, like Apple did with the 14" MacBook Pro. But, for the price of the system, it's hard to beat. The price-to-performance ratio of the baseline M1 MBA isn't matched with Windows notebooks and you get the added benefit of running macOS on Apple's hardware. It's powerful enough for photos and video editing yet efficient enough to last all day. This fan-less design is great and I'm excited to see what Apple does next.Pablo
I purchased the 2020 MacBook Air about 7 months ago. I was looking for a cost efficient Apple laptop that would be a useful tool for college. The 2020 MacBook Air with the M1 Chip is perfect for the tasks I need to complete for college and my personal life as well. Generally, the this specific model costs $1,250, however, if you catch it while on sale you can get it for a lot cheaper. When I purchased my MacBook Air, I was able to get a discount because I purchased it during the Back to School sale. I only paid $1,000 plus tax for the MacBook. I’ve tested out several computers over the years and the MacBook Air series, has always been my top choice. I finally purchased my own MacBook Air in August of 2020. At the time, the 2020 MacBook Air was the latest model. Compared to the older Air models, the battery life is great and can last up to 5 hours solely on battery power. I purchased the 512 gb model, however, I originally stradled the fence on whether to get the 256 gb model or one with a larger storage. After having the device for 7 months, and using it for several spaceous projects, I have only used 60 gb of space, and the device still preforms exactly the same as when I first bought it. The startup time is quick, and the playback ability is very smooth. I use my MacBook Air, almost every single day, and I love it. So far, I haven’t had to replace anything. The box includes, the MacBook Air, and the charger. The charger is a type-c charger, that has a medium size adapter head just like the newer iPad series. One of the negatives about the MacBook Air, is that it is really easy to scratch and ding. A quick fix could be getting a case, however, most cases only protect the outside. The keyboard and the screen are also directly exposed to dust, dings, pricks, and crumbs. Even still, the MacBook’s overall preformance surpasses all of the negatives. The 2020 MacBook Air with the M1 Chip is a top pick of mine for laptops. It is worth the price and easily withstands the several daily tasks of a busy college student.Tjazlyn
MacBook Air 2022 is perfect for students. Students can study different courses, this can go from economics to computer science. The laptop is suitable for any course that a student can follow. I do computer science and I notice that the MacBook can run several applications at the same time, and this is a very big advantage over old Windows computers. But also, for students studying economics. For example, the MacBook can easily work with Word, PowerPoint, Excel and much more at the same time. M1 Small chip. Immense progress. I think that the brand new M1 processor made by Apple itself is one of the biggest upgrades to the new MacBooks. In the previous models, Apple used the intel processors that are also in the old Windows computers, but in the new MacBook this is no longer the case. Personally, I notice that the Macbook stays much cooler during heavy downloads, and it also stops making noise. I also noticed that the processor could open apps much faster. In my opinion, I find the completely new design of the MacBook Air 2022 very astonishing! The design is made by different metals and glasses that ensure the Macbook will not brake after a little fall. I take the MacBook to school every day and I notice that the metals in the design of the MacBook make the laptop last much longer, especially when we talk about the outside of the laptop. The design also fits 100% with the rest of Apple's products, the MacBook comes in 3 different colors that perfectly matches with the latest iPhones and iPads. Finally, I recommend this product to anyone, especially college students. This product is also 100% suitable for people who are involved in large projects in their daily lives, such as photographers or architects, especially because the MacBook contains the M1 processor that can handle a lot without unexpected annoying bugs. “Power. It’s in the Air.” MacBook Air with M1 is an incredibly portable laptop — it’s nimble and quick, with a silent, fanless design and a beautiful Retina display. Thanks to its slim profile and all‑day battery life, this Air moves at the speed of lightness.MaximilienG

Pros: I chose the MacBook Air to use whilst working from home. Having already having a older MacBook Pro that was also in use didn’t think it wise to spend the extra £300 to get another Pro. This was a very good decision. Not only is the new MacBook Air thinner and lighter than my original Pro it also is running the amazing new M1 chip. The M1 chip has not struggled whilst I have been running multiple programmes at the same time whilst working. I will be clear I have not being using apps such as Photoshop or Final Cut. It’s no fan design has caused me no problems in overheating and us as remained cool and silent during use. The battery life of 18 hours of video playback lasted me about 22 (30min) episodes on Netflix and 2 films. For work only it usually lasts 3 days before I have to charge it again. Very happy with the product and would recommend it for anyone needing a fast, stylish and powerful laptop. Even as Apple’s entry point model it is worth it! Cons: Keyboard compared to 2013 MacBook Pro sticks ever so slightly more. Does feature new keyboard which is an improvement over the last. Not a deal breaker.Vicky
This laptop is well made, with nice touches like being able to lift the lid with one hand without the whole laptop lifting off the table. TouchID is fast: from lifting the lid to being logged in takes only a second or two. All programs load quickly, and everything runs smoothly and responsively. The battery lasts ages with normal use (probably 8 hours). The audio is incredible. The bass is a bit lacking, but the sound is really immersive and 3D (it sounds like it's originating from outside the laptop), and high quality. The screen is lovely too: bright, sharp, and with nice colours, and the auto-adjustment due to changing light conditions simply works. There's not much keyboard travel, but certainly enough to feel pleasant. The trackpad is perfect: it's accurate, and all of the gestures, swipes, and shortcuts just work. The clicking isn't a proper click but some kind of clever haptic feedback, but it had me fooled. One downside is the camera is fairly low resolution, though I'm not bothered, as I'm not on the receiving end of it. The other downside is the case design limits cooling, so the fans can wind up even when playing a video (though the audio easily drowns them out). Any processor throttling to stop overheating isn't noticeable with standard tasks such as web browsing, videos, and emails. I've not tried video editing or compiling huge programs. Set-up was a doddle: everything transferred automatically over from our old 2010 MacBook Pro, and after a few hours (lots to transfer), it was set up and working almost exactly like the old one, with all the user accounts, mailboxes, programs, and settings transferred over. It integrates well iPhones and iPads: you can send and receive SMS messages, move browser tabs between devices, and even use an iPad as an extra screen. If this laptop lasts as well as our 2010 MacBook Pro, it is very good value (indeed, cheaper and with a better screen than some equivalent laptops).Nicholas
I brought this computer thinking I was spending money on a brand new computer that is not the case. These are refurnished computers and the one I got doesn't work or will hold a battery charge on it. I reached out to apple because when you buy a new Mac Book there is support on them and they told me that this computer that was sent to me was over a year old and that there was no warranty on it. I have sent the computer back to QVC and am waiting for a refund of my money. Maybe it is in the little print somewhere that these are not new but for the price I could have brought a brand new one actually cheaper at Apple. Also the stuff they send is pretty cheap and not worth the extra mark up they are changing!Refurbished Computer

Reviews:
This was my first Mac since I had the PowerBook Titanium G4 towards the end of college in 2001 and first cut my teeth in the tech world administrating Xservs. Once Apple went away from Motorola processors, got Intel-based chips, and then generally marketed itself out as the pretentious Panera Bread of electronics, I took a break from the Apple world. Different story, not relevant. Fast forward to today. My wife has been rocking out her 2018 MacBook Air, and I've been just using work laptops at home for the past decade. I finally decided to stop using the government bloatware devices that the government mismanages, and used her MacBook Air. It was sleek and sporty alright, but my God: almost 20 years away from iOS and I was frustrated with it daily. ("Crap! Where do I find this again?!") However, it came back to me, and I started focusing on the design. The keyboard. The technology and all the gizmos. I finally said "I want my own laptop," and after contemplating too many choices with the not-so-great Win10 devices, this MacBook Pro w/the new M1 chip caught my eye. After having owned it for several weeks now, I am happy with the design, the comfortability and ease of use (hardware, peripherals, etc). The M1 chip shows great promise — the battery life is exactly as advertised. So yes, I own and use a Mac now for computing. But never, ever shall I switch from my Samsung Galaxy line of smart phones! The only downside to this (and every Apple product) is the price point. To be truly competitive, Apple needs to focus on bringing in new customers (see: more competitive pricing) instead of keeping only the same pretentious individuals over and over.pentel
Pros: Having updated from a 2011 Macbook pro, this Mac is a significant improvement. Everything I have thrown at it is has managed and I haven't heard the fans come on or had the core temperature over 40 degrees celsius. I work on lots of different applications all at once with two screens (video editing, PowerPoint editing, photo editing, internet browsing etc) and it hasn't missed a beat. Genuinely crazy impressed with the performance of this machine, considering the relatively low specs. Design is as you expect. sleek, smooth and very light. The battery is unbelievable. I've not managed to get the battery below 50% and that is with extended use. Before having to return to my desk. But honestly, I think the battery would probably last a couple of days before needing to be recharged. Honestly, i did a lot of research on this laptop and contended with this or the Intel, and I'm happy i went for the M1. I think these chips are incredible for what they do and once developers catch up there will be a whole lot more to come. But overall, this is a lower graded spec laptop that can handle pretty much everything a higher spec similar model can. Cons: So, I guess it's not entirely the product's fault, but some of the Adobe applications aren't fully functional yet with the M1 chip. They work, and there is also a BETA version of some of the applications. But the full versions sometimes crash. So if you are someone who uses Adobe software and cannot wait for them to update their software to work with the M1 chip, you might want to consider the Intel version. The laptop is very powerful for the specs and I can't fault it. But monitoring it's RAM usage, it seems as though there are a lot of processes that Apple have made as standard run in the background that take up a lot of this RAM. It doesn't cause a problem at the minute at all and literally everything I have done it has managed with ease. But, I'm conscious that this might have a more of an impact in the future or it might not, dependent on Apple's ability to streamline the RAM usage later down the line. As a buyer, who wants a laptop that will be performing lots of heavy-duty tasks that need a lot of RAM, this might not be the machine for you and you might want to consider the 16GB version. But, for everyday tasks, general use and the odd video editing or photo editing. It is more than enough and can do anything you need it to no problem at all.Michael
Amazing MacBook!! The MacBook with M1 is blazing fast, even the standard base model with no upgrades. This was a replacement from an iPad since needed more of a computer feel and software for my work. I now use sidecar with my iPad for additional display.I've run into ZERO issues with any software or applications not working with the M1 chip. I've heard of problems arising but I myself have not come across that at all.if you have any other Apple products and are looking into buying a computer but hesitating on a Mac, SERIOUSLY consider an Apple computer (whether it's an iMac, Mac mini, Pro or Air). The Apple ecosystem is what makes the slightly higher price tag SO worth it. All of your Apple products sync with one another seamlessly and everything you put on your iPhone can be accessed by your MacBook or iPad via iCloud (ecosystem), etc and vice versa, which makes keeping all of your things in "one place" so easy.Zairam
