Reviews:
I began this book prepared to like it, I really did. Actually, I was pre-reading it to see if it was suitable for my son. It is not. First, let me say that this book is not for children. Certain topics of a sexual nature are routinely mentioned, indirectly. All of that action takes place off-stage or implicitly. At the start, I was all for Captain Aubrey. I wanted to like him. After all, he is the hero of twenty more sequels. I tried to like him. I just couldn't. He is an obtuse, vain, vulgar, amoral jerk. His only real and true skill is in seamanship and the classical violin. The author uses the immersion method to introduce his audience to the terms and jargon of early nineteenth-century navy seamanship. Nothing much is explained to us landlubbers, which makes following the copious sailing and battle descriptions a bit sketchy. I tended to gloss over at the mention of too many "stuns'ls" and "topgallantmasts." There is a vein of anti-Catholicism which surfaces several times. Two characters are secret Catholics, and neither acquits himself heroically in that regard. One takes an oath against the Pope to obtain his commission; the other avoids revealing his true creed by turns of phrase and re-directing the conversation. Aubrey hates all Catholics (if he knows them to be so) and makes no bones about it. Of course, one would not expect to find pro-Catholic sentiment in His Majesty's Navy. All of the technical jargon and religious differences aside, the story did mostly hold my interest. In the end, I was not satisfied with the resolution of the story. I am sure that is directly related to my dislike of the main character. I don't plan on pursuing any of the abundant sequels at present. I think I'll try the Midshipman Quinn books next.philothea.distracted
Unique blend of historical perspective, masterful seamanship, and precise details of life aboard a British warship bound together by the colorful saga of a friendship between an upwardly mobile Sea Captain and his close friend, the ships physician. Great book, great series written with an erudition guaranteed to evoke the rhythm and pulse of the sea.mshne614
As far as sea-farin' adventures go, this one is one of the best around. The characterisations are complex and diverse. The descriptions of life on the sea are captivating. I would find myself getting completely caught up in the book and unable to put it down. I could practically smell the sodden ropes and stinking bodies aboard the tall ships. The character of the doctor was my favourite. Just a brilliant story, with excellent characters and written in a very digestible way.
2. The Reverse Of The Medal (Vol. Book 11) (Aubrey/maturin Novels) [Book]
Product Details:
"an overwhelming, outstanding novel…!"—irish times captain jack aubrey, r. n., ashore after a successful cruise, is persuaded by a casual acquaintance to make certain investments in the city. this innocent decision ensnares him in the london criminal underground and in government espionage—the province of his friend stephen maturin. is aubrey's humiliation and the threatened ruin of his career a deliberate plot? this dark tale is a fitting backdrop to the brilliant characterization and sparkling dialogue which o'brian's readers have come to expect.

Reviews:
The Aubry/Maturin series has got to be one of the best series ever written on this time period. As a set like this is the only way to buy them as well, because once you started reading you will not want to quit. The characters are all real people who have their ups and down, you can see them as real people who just had their lives documented by the author. 5 stars all the waydowntime407
I have read this entire 21 book series 6 times over the last 10 years, and have never read another favorite book more than 3 times. These books are not just about the Royal navy during the Napolianic wars, they speak volumes about human nature, friendship and love in a timeless way. The quality of the hard cover complete set is excellent so far, but I am only halfway through the first book in my 7 reading of the series. In my humble opinion O' Brian is on par with Shakespeare.kirkaa

4. Desolation Island: The Aubrey/maturin Novels Book 5 [Book]
Product Details:
"the relationship [between aubrey and maturin]…is about the best thing afloat…. for conradian power of description and sheer excitement there is nothing in naval fiction to beat the stern chase as the outgunned leopard staggers through mountain waves in icy latitudes to escape the dutch seventy-four."—stephen vaughan, observer commissioned to rescue governor bligh of bounty fame, captain jack aubrey and his friend and surgeon stephen maturin sail the leopard to australia with a hold full of convicts. among them is a beautiful and dangerous spy—and a treacherous disease that decimates the crew. with a dutch man-of-war to windward, the undermanned, outgunned leopard sails for her life into the freezing waters of the antarctic, where, in mountain seas, the dutchman closes…

Another fascinating Aubrey – Maturin story! Working my way through the series!qualityguy18
Generally, I find history as usually written, boring, but not this series. Beautifully written and edited, as only the English seem to do. Every few years, I reread the entire series, and can't find them all at my library. I have a few more to buy, and then I will have the entire collection. Great writing, giving a background of Great Britain and the British Navy in the 1800s. Adventure wrapped around a core of history. Plenty of action, too!raptorspy
Another Patrick O'brian swashbuckler. Captain Jack Aury and his trusty ships surgen Stephen Maturin, Sail to australia abord the old, but refitted HMS Leopard. A ship with a cargo of prisoners, and a beutiful woman spy. On there way they face the plague, storms and a dutch 72 gun man of war, dead sit to send them all to the bottom. Good reading, I recomend it highly.573*bowman
5. The Commodore (Vol. Book 17) (Aubrey/maturin Novels) [Book]
Product Details:
The seventeenth novel in the sweeping aubrey-maturin series of naval tales, which the new york times book review has described as "the best historical novels ever written." having survived a long and desperate adventure in the great south sea, captain jack aubrey and stephen maturin return to england to very different circumstances. for jack it is a happy homecoming, at least initially, but for stephen it is disastrous: his little daughter appears to be autistic, incapable of speech or contact, while his wife, diana, unable to bear this situation, has disappeared, her house being looked after by the widowed clarissa oakes. much of the commodore takes place on land, in sitting rooms and in drafty castles, but the roar of the great guns is never far from our hearing. aubrey and maturin are sent on a bizarre decoy mission to the fever-ridden lagoons of the gulf of guinea to suppress the slave trade. but their ultimate destination is ireland, where the french are mounting an invasion that will test aubrey's seamanship and maturin's resourcefulness as a secret intelligence agent. the subtle interweaving of these disparate themes is an achievement of pure storytelling by one of our greatest living novelists.

Reviews:
I've read the first three books by Patrick O'Brian. Found them very well writern. He puts you in the time of the books.simply2me
I am finding that the books are a good source of material for the movie, but, reading all that english dialect and nautical terms is tough. It is going very slow. I may never get to this book. The movie was such an advernture and such a "guy flick" I find I have respect for the books, I just can't get through them. Wish me luck.konarichcv
Great book by itself or part of series. Warning, start it and you won’t want to put it down.John S.
7. Blue At The Mizzen (Vol. Book 20) (Aubrey/maturin Novels) [Book]
Product Details:
"the old master has us again in the palm of his hand."—los angeles times (a best book of 1999) napoleon has been defeated at waterloo, and the ensuing peace brings with it both the desertion of nearly half of captain aubrey's crew and the sudden dimming of aubrey's career prospects in a peacetime navy. when the surprise is nearly sunk on her way to south america—where aubrey and stephen maturin are to help chile assert her independence from spain—the delay occasioned by repairs reaps a harvest of strange consequences. the south american expedition is a desperate affair; and in the end jack's bold initiative to strike at the vastly superior spanish fleet precipitates a spectacular naval action that will determine both chile's fate and his own.

Reviews:
I'm incredibly disappointed by this product. Everything is perfect except that the books are printed on paper which is so thin as to be translucent. When reading one page, the ink from the other side of the page intrudes so badly as to almost make it unreadable. I have never come across a book with such thin paper in my life. I guess it is done to save money, but it is a decision which utterly ruins this collection of novels.JB75
I have loved this series for ten years and wanted my own copy for that long. O'Brian writes so well that it is hard to put the book down. He makes something as esoteric as the technical details of a sailing ship interesting, and writes his characters with humour and compassion. I sat down joyfully to read my very own copy and this will be my sixth time of reading the series all the way through.kado-6001

9. The Hundred Days (Vol. Book 19) (Aubrey/maturin Novels) [Book]
Product Details:
"one of the best novelists since jane austen…the hundred days may be the best installment yet." —philadelphia inquirer napoleon, escaped from elba, pursues his enemies across europe like a vengeful phoenix. if he can corner the british and prussians before their russian and austrian allies arrive, his genius will lead the french armies to triumph at waterloo. in the balkans, preparing a thrust northwards into central europe to block the russians and austrians, a horde of muslim mercenaries is gathering. they are inclined toward napoleon because of his conversion to islam during the egyptian campaign, but they will not move without a shipment of gold ingots from sheik ibn hazm which, according to british intelligence, is on its way via camel caravan to the coast of north africa. it is this gold that jack aubrey and stephen maturin must at all costs intercept. the fate of europe hinges on their desperate mission.
Reviews:
Carries on with another wonderful tale of Aubrey. The story is engaging and compelling so there is no true disappointment with this book. This one is not as crisp as earlier books and adds nothing to the human evolution of the characters. Maturin in grief does not have the ring of truth past novels have consistently brought to the table.lessoff
To anyone that has not read any of the other books in the series they will probably not really appreciate the story here . I read this after reading the first eighteen novels in the series and Jack and Stephen feel like old friends both of them getting old and supporting each other in their endeavours; Jack in his efforts to command a new ship and cope with the tasks the Admiraly give him , and Stephen in his work as a spy and able surgeon . The story flows and I was sorry to come to the end. O'Brian wrote one more book in the series ( Blue at the Mizzen ), but there will be no more from his pen as he is now dead. I urge everybody with adventure in their soul to read the books , they are to be cherished.5379anthonyc

The Aubrey/Maturin series of sea stories by Patrick O'Brien are simply the best sea adventure stores I have ever read — and I have read a lot of them. I read this entire series several years ago — borrowed every one of them. I am now building my own complete collection of them so that I can read them again and so that my 13 year old boy might come to treasure them as I do.p3a

An interesting and compelling historical fiction account of a little known campaign during the Napoleonic Warsnewpawpaw
This series of historical fiction is the best of it's kind on the naval life in 18th and 19th century England. There is a lot of commentary on medical practice, political intrigue, natural history discovery of the times and of course, all facets of naval life. The skillful writing and suspense, development of the characters keeps you reading. A great series!dbsunshine

Great action stories with excellent character development. Another excellent episode on O'Brian's classic series about Captain Aubrey and his friend Dr. Maturin in the English navy during the Napoleonic era.mjohnm
Girt for some one who loves this series of booksMary
What's not to like when you can take a large chunk of replacing a stolen collection of Patrick O'Brian's Jack Aubrey books for a bargain price and get several hardback copies included. To those who love the stories no reason is needed. For those who have not I will simply say this – If you love C.S.Forrester's Hornblower saga or any historical fiction concerning the Naval wars between the British and the French during the period of 1776 to roughly 1815 then you will really want to take a good look at these every entertaining and incredibly accurate stories. Master and Commander, the first book in the saga, I found not that easy to read as I usually do, but stick with it and see the writing and the story telling improve rapidly in the following tomes – unlike many historical fiction series which were written from the middle out, O'Brian starts at the beginning and follows his cast of characters through a saga that has many levels to follow. Finding out that Jack is an incredible mariner shouldn't be a surprise anyone who likes theses tales, but finding out just who hopeless he is on land is simply a good time to observe. That I love these types of stories should be clear enough, and O'Brian's works are among the very best to be found. Start with Master and Commander, or at least rent the film of the same name, and keep going afterward as you will be glad that you did. Find your comfy chair grab the beverage of your choice and enjoy.phoenix5805

Reviews:
I haven't read much of the Aubrey-Maturin novels at this point, only just now nearing the end of the fourth. But this book has already helped me make sense of a good few naval and medical terms, thanks to it's large glossary, and I imagine it will help me many more times before I have completed the series. It also contains articles that give an overview of the wider conflicts going on between nations during the events of the novels, about medicine as it was practiced then, information on important institutions and key historical figures, and ship diagrams and pictures of various types of ship. I would say this is something you should purchase as soon as you know you want to keep reading the novels, which I think will be before too long. You can still read and greatly enjoy the series (well, the first four books anyway), without knowing much at all about how sailing and victory are achieved on the high seas, but if you want to develop a reasonable understanding and gain even more enjoyment from these sublime novels, I don't know if that's possible just reading the books themselves – a flaw perhaps? In summation, this is a fantastic companion book to have, and due to it's nature as a compendium of naval knowledge, an interesting read in and of itself – get a copy as soon as you intend to stay aboard for the long haul!ny66yn
I am reading through all the Patrick O"Brian Aubrey/Maturin novels and have frequently had to refer to a dictionary with only varied success as most of the words etc are now out of use. This book more than adequately fills that gap. For example I now have a far better understanding about what is going on aboard ship especially the references to sails and lines etc. Excellent – I would be lost without it. Highly recommended.gordon7807
If you are a fan of O'Brian's Jack and Stephen Books (am currently on my 8th reading of the 20 book series). THIS book is excellent to have. My Latin is a bit rusty from high school, and i never learned French, and my knowledge (prior to reading the series) 19th Century British Naval warfare and warcraft was just about nil. The website that used to explain this stuff has gone away, so now this book is a must, as well s being really nice to have right at hand when you come across a term or bit of hardware you do not understand (cheeks, knees, dogs, horses, mice I KNOW what those things are now aside from body parts and fuzzy animals)….Buy it…. jim in gold barjimb.cac
15. The Thirteen Gun Salute (Vol. Book 13) (Aubrey/maturin Novels) [Book]
Product Details:
"in length the series is unique; in quality—and there is not a weak link in the chain—it cannot but be ranked with the best of twentieth century historical novels." —independent captain jack aubrey sets sail for the south china sea with a new lease on life. following his dismissal from the royal navy (a false accusation), he has earned reinstatement through his daring exploits as a privateer, brilliantly chronicled in the letter of marque. the journey of the diane encompasses a great and satisfying diversity of adventures. maturin climbs the thousand steps of the sacred crater of the orangutans; a killer typhoon catches aubrey and his crew trying to work the diane off a reef; and in the barbaric court of pulo prabang a classic duel of intelligence agents unfolds: the french envoys, well entrenched in the sultan's good graces, against the savage cunning of stephen maturin.

16. The Final Unfinished Voyage Of Jack Aubrey [Book]
Product Details:
At the time of his death, patrick o'brian had begun to write a novel to follow on from blue at the mizzen, the twentieth book in the classic series. these are the chapters he had completed of the final voyage of jack aubrey and stephen maturin — the greatest friendship of modern literature the story picks up from the end of 'blue at the mizzen' when jack aubrey receives the news, in chile, of his elevation to flag rank: rear admiral of the blue squadron, with orders to sail to the south africa station. this novel, unfinished and untitled at the time of o'brian's death, would have been a chronicle of that mission, and much else besides.

Reviews:
This is the last book in the series, which I enjoyed immensely. Read them all!Margaret
To me the title suggested the possibility of our hero being "hit on the head" (killed) during this final tome. In reality the Author passed away while writing this book so there are only the few early chapters with no one attempting a completion. They fill it out with copies of his actual handwritten notes of these earlier chapters giving an insight into his craft. This may be useful to a budding writer. All in all I felt conned. Patrick O'Brian was a master writer and this smells of others profiting from his demise.Derek the Synchronist
17. The Yellow Admiral [Book]
Product Details:
Life ashore may once again be the undoing of jack aubrey in the yellow admiral, patrick o'brian's best-selling novel and eighteenth volume in the aubrey/maturin series. aubrey, now a considerable though impoverished landowner, has dimmed his prospects at the admiralty by his erratic voting as a member of parliament; he is feuding with his neighbor, a man with strong navy connections who wants to enclose the common land between their estates; he is on even worse terms with his wife, sophie, whose mother has ferreted out a most damaging trove of old personal letters. even jack's exploits at sea turn sour: in the storm waters off brest he captures a french privateer laden with gold and ivory, but this at the expense of missing a signal and deserting his post. worst of all, in the spring of 1814, peace breaks out, and this feeds into jack's private fears for his career. fortunately, jack is not left to his own devices. stephen maturin returns from a mission in france with the news that the chileans, to secure their independence, require a navy, and the service of english officers. jack is savoring this apparent reprieve for his career, as well as sophie's forgiveness, when he receives an urgent dispatch ordering him to gibraltar: napoleon has escaped from elba.

I have read the Aubrey Maturin novels in order 5 times and am still amazed by their depth and relevance. Much more than a set of stories but an accurate reflection of men and their trials in life. Please read them in order and do not give up when the reading gets difficult, it will be well worth your patience.nelsonpf

Reviews:
Great series of books, but very technical. You will learn the way it was in Britain's Navy "back then". You will learn the differences between mid-shipmen, lieutenants, master and commanders, post captain, captain and the many types of Admirals. You will be put in many sea battles. Unless you are into sailing in the early 1800s you will need the companion books; (1) "A Sea of Words" a lexicon and companion for Patrick O'Brian's books and (2) "Men of War", Life in Nelson's Navy. Both of these books describe the system of officer's ranks, ships, weaponry, sails, sailing techniques, traditions and the Naval vernacular is use at that time.wljordanlinda

The exciting sea battles are historically accurate…taken from actual ship's logs and truth is stranger than fiction. It's so compelling I'm going to read the entire series.seequest
These are a series of books linked together. Once I started to read the first book, I can't put them down. They are excellent reading.
I started reading O'Brian's series on Jack Aubrey after seeing the movie "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World." If you're not familiar with nineteenth-century British nautical terms and other jargon, then you either have to resign yourself to the fact that you won't always entirely understand what's going on, or find yourself frequently running to the dictionary. Mostly, I chose the former strategy, and it has worked out very well. O'Brian does an excellent job of showing you what life was like in the British Navy and British society of that time. Sometimes the novel reads like Horatio Hornblower, and sometimes like a Jane Austin novel.bsquared18
