Great introduction to buddhist themes and practice – specifically Nichiren Buddhism as practised by the lay organisation Soka Gakkai (society for value creation.) For those wanting practical spiritual guidance and a practise that can be used to overcome challenges in everyday life, I recommend reading this introductory book. Reviews:
[Volume 1: Four Noble Truths] This is one of Geshe Tashi's six books in the Foundation of Buddhist Thought series. These books were developed from a 2-year course that he teaches at the Jamyang / Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FTMP) centre in the UK. The course is also available online (for a fee). This book, like the others in the set, is quite comprehensive but eminently readable. The books suit those new to Buddhism as well as more experienced readers. They are so good that they prompted me to enrol in his online course.

11. Zen Buddhism: Selected Writings Of D.t. Suzuki [Book]
Product Details:
No other figure in history has played a bigger part in opening the west to buddhism than the eminent zen author, d.t. suzuki, and in this reissue of his best work readers are given the very heart of zen teaching. zen buddhism, which sold more than 125,000 as an anchor paperback after its publication in 1956, includes a basic historical background as well as a thorough overview of the techniques for zen practice. concepts and terminology such as satori, zazen, and koans, as well as the various elements of this philosophy are all given clear explanations. but while suzuki takes nothing for granted in the reader's understanding of the fundamentals, he does not give a merely rudimentary overview. each of the essays included here, particularly those on the unconscious mind and the relation of zen to western philosophy, go far beyond other sources for their penetrating insights and timeless wisdom.what is most important about d.t. suzuki's work, however–and what comes across so powerfully in these selections–is his unparalleled ability to communicate the experiential aspect of zen. the intensity here with which zen philosophy comes to life is without parallel in the canon of buddhist literature. suzuki stands apart from all teachers before or since because of his exceptional ability to eloquently capture in words the seemingly inexpressible essence of zen.
Reviews:

Never have reflections of Buddhism been massaged so intimately with Shakespeare's colossal understandings of human nature. Shufran weaves Buddhist principles and Shakespearean wisdom with tender dexterity to elucidate the readers mind and liberate their soul. While the author is quick to acknowledge that "neither Buddhist practices nor reading Shakespeare are passive undertakings", Shufran nonetheless creates a seamless and accessible guide for any novice or master to enjoy. Whether confronted with death as a subject matter or anger, hatred, or other forms of human suffering as explored by Shakespeare, the Buddhist antidote is an infallible source of comfort throughout every chapter. The Buddha and the Bard will appeal to the intellectuals as much as it will to those who thrive on absorbing conscious literary masterpieces.Sin

The most prominent expert on Tibetan Buddhism in the West offers a translation of this essential book of Tibetan philosophy that captures the true spirit and poetry of the original work–a profound book that reveals the nature of the mind and its manifestations and offers pure enlightenment.lasonic09
There are some who argue this might not be the most faithful translation of the Bardo Thodol (Tibetan Book of the Dead), but it certainly is one of the most friendly and understandable. This is a complex subject matter, even for those who follow Tibetan Buddhism. As a Professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies at Columbia University, Thurman has made The Tibetan Book of the Dead quite accessible and fairly easy to understand, by first taking the reader through a brief Tibetan history lesson before delving into the worlds of The Between (the Bardos). Highly recommended.pillman

Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi (an American Buddhist monk) illuminates the Dharma to westerners. We can be grateful for his many Dharma efforts.plentyzero
First of all, you don't need to be buddhist to gain something from this book. Second, there are a few parts near the end that deal with monastic life (monks) but as stated in the book can mostly be applied to the average life. I didn't start with texts like this. I started straight with the Pali Suttas no problem. I was purchasing the english translations from Target and decided to grab this book to read when I have short free periods. I wouldn't let reading the suttas straight-up scare you if you intend to study buddhism but for new folks potentially interested in buddhism and older alike, this is a great book. Each section is has it's own introduction. The introduction gives some background/explanation of the suttas that will follow in the pages to follow as well as Bhikku Bodhi's own insight on the matters when applicable. I mention "Morality" in my headline title. How can you have social or communal harmony without morality? You can't. From newcomers to buddhism the things I see most often are questions such as "how do I deal with X in life?", "how do I respond when [name] does Y to me?", "how do I handle this feeling?" and alike. Those are properly addressed without having to dig through the massive sutta collections to find what you're looking for. It has a special section on anger in itself which makes sense as it's one of the easiest emotions to give way to and can cause the most problems. Not just crazy anger however, even subtle. It's a good read for what you pay, especially for those just wanting to get an idea of some buddhist ideals and not focusing on meditation or alike. This book truly focuses on what it's title implies. Best Wishes.JA

17. A Global History Of Buddhism And Medicine [Book]
Product Details:
Medicine, health, and healing have been central to buddhism since its origins. long before the global popularity of mindfulness and meditation, buddhism provided cultures around the world with conceptual tools to understand illness as well as a range of therapies and interventions for care of the sick. today, buddhist traditions, healers, and institutions continue to exert a tangible influence on medical care in societies both inside and outside asia, including in the areas of mental health, biomedicine, and even in responses to the covid-19 pandemic. however, the global history of the relationship between buddhism and medicine remains largely untold. this book is a wide-ranging and accessible account of the interplay between buddhism and medicine over the past two and a half millennia. pierce salguero traces the intertwining threads linking ideas, practices, and texts from many different times and places. he shows that buddhism has played a crucial role in cross-cultural medical exchange globally and that buddhist knowledge formed the nucleus for many types of traditional practices that still thrive today throughout asia. although buddhist medicine has always been embedded in local contexts and differs markedly across cultures, salguero identifies key patterns that have persisted throughout this long history. this book will be informative and invaluable for scholars, students, and practitioners of both buddhism and complementary and alternative medicine.
18. The Gateless Gate: The Classic Book Of Zen Koans [Book]
Product Details:
In the gateless gate, one of modern zen buddhism's uniquely influential masters offers classic commentaries on the mumonkan, one of zen's greatest collections of teaching stories. this translation was compiled with the western reader in mind, and includes koan yamada's clear and penetrating comments on each case. yamada played a seminal role in bringing zen buddhism to the west from japan, going on to be the head of the sanbo kyodan zen community.the gateless gate would be invaluable if only for the translation and commentary alone, yet it's loaded with extra material and is a fantastic resource to keep close by: an in-depth introduction to the history of zen practice lineage charts japanese-to-chinese and chinese-to-japanese conversion charts for personal names, place names, and names of writings plus front- and back-matter from ancient and modern figures: mumon, shuan, kubota ji'un, taizan maezumi, hugo enomiya-lasalle, and yamada roshi's son, masamichi yamada. a wonderful inspiration for the koan practitioner, and for those with a general interest in zen buddhism.
Reviews:
It's a great book for anyone. I would recommend it to anyone. This book is fantastic. It keeps you interested and captivated. Whether it be for yourself or others, it's a must have. I hope you will like this book just as much as me. It is definitely worth buying. If you are looking for a good book then this is it. Perfect.
Timeless book of Zen Koans. Think if a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound or what is the sound of one hand clapping – only more complex and thought provoking. The added commentary in this edition helps give both background and interpretation to the Koans, while still leaving the ultimate solution and potential spiritual fulfillment to the reader.njsports

19. The Lotus Sutra: A Contemporary Translation Of A Buddhist Classic [Book]
Product Details:
The lotus sutra is regarded as one of the world's great religious scriptures and most influential texts. it's a seminal work in the development of buddhism throughout east asia and, by extension, in the development of mahayana buddhism throughout the world. taking place in a vast and fantastical cosmic setting, the lotus sutra places emphasis on skillfully doing whatever is needed to serve and compassionately care for others, on breaking down distinctions between the fully enlightened buddha and the bodhisattva who vows to postpone salvation until all beings may share it, and especially on each and every being's innate capacity to become a buddha.gene reeves's new translation appeals to readers with little or no familiarity with technical buddhist vocabulary, as well as long-time practitioners and students. in addition, this remarkable volume includes the full "threefold" text of this classic.
Reviews:
A very interesting translation of the Buddhist classic – The Lotus Sutra. It is most difficult to uderstand, most difficult to believe. Through Reeves' eyes the sutra takes on a new shine, as such, it reflects a more scholastic interpretation of the abtruce meaning(s) of the Sutra. Contrast sharply with that of Burton Watson classic work. Suffice it to say it is a close match for Kumarajiva's 5 century work (from Sanskrit to Chinese). Well done professor Reeves. The appendix is also an informative revelation of time lines and obtuse explanation of many deities (Buddhist or Hindu or otherwise) Well worth a read. The book also covers the sine qua non threefold Lotus Sutra. To include the prologue (Unlimited meaning Sutra) The Lotus Sutra proper and the Sutra of Bodhisattva Universal worth (epilogue). A must read for all interesting to know more about this Classic.x511
