Ross is an expert in cults, he has worked personally with 1000s of cults from small to large and it was very helpful for me, to have the core characteristics of cults identified and clearly explained. What I learned is that all cults have the same characteristics, whether they are spiritual or political, or even marketing based, they all use similar techniques and have the same core underlying philosophy of training their members the "surrender" to the key directives and authority of the leader or the group. A cult will also "unfreeze" "rewrite" and the "refreeze" members, by creating conditions that encourage them to become open and receptive, and will replace their "map of reality" with a new version that is in alignment with the group values, and "refreeze" that map, giving a member a new identity and frame of reference, in such a way they do not even realize it has happened. The book is academic, and based on the best available research, and also gains from Ross's intervention work, with examples provided of his personal interactions as an intervention consultant with people from numerous cults. One of the key methods used to help "wake" people up is to help them to identify how the cult deceived them from the beginning, often disguising that the cult leader even exists,and not revealing the true purpose of the group, or the groups philosophies and belief system until the member has undergone a series of secret rites of initiations, ones they were often lead into blind, without full consent simply by erroneously placing their trust in the more senior members of the group. It has taught me that it is important to use your brain, be aware, and just because something "feels good" doesn't necessarily mean it is good for you. A majority of cults will use emotional regulation techniques such as yoga, meditation, relaxation exercises which provide real benefits, but they are in actuality a grooming process, that brings you into the right degree of receptivity so that the indoctrination or thought reform process can begin. I have recently left the Irman Effendi, Reiki based cult, and this book helped me to identify the techniques that were used to obtain increasing control over me and my life. Effendi uses a controlled walking technique, called Secrets of Natural Walking, meditation, relaxation guiding, trance states, prayer, long retreats, past life regressions, confessions, increasing daily practice requirements as methods of both mental, physical and energetic control through the "spiritual heart". It was illuminating to read that the techniques,philosophies and practices taught by Effendi in the Padmachaya, Padmachaya, Open Heart Meditation, Reiki Tummo, "Natural Way of Living" group, are all text-book techniques of control and manipulation and all identified in Rick Ross's book.colliespock

Cultish the language of fanaticism is a FANTASTIC book about the depths of how our language is manipulated to draw and convince as marketing strategies but how did we get here? We all undeniably follow some form of Cult and they all stem from the methods used by the 'Cults' we usually associate with the term. Obviously if you are interested in Cults this book is a great read about the psychological aspect of them however, it is not a step by step re-telling of these genre. Rather this book about how we as ordinary humans adopt new forms of languages/words to reel people into our world. I rate this 4/5 stars purely for the density of the book. I required breaks in between reading as a I needed to reflect on what I was reading. It was not necessarily a strain on the brain but not the easiest read. Nevertheless, Montell's writing is super accessible and you don't need any prior knowledge to read it. Would for sure read again and I think it is such an interesting thesis regardless.Leila

It is a fantastic resource for both adults and for homeschool use. From a homeschool standpoint, it is probably best at a high school level. There are multiple authors and I feel like this gives a much more well-rounded viewpoint on the various religions. I think this is a must-read for Christians today. This was an interesting, well thought and written book on the various cults in our society. Martin describes the criteria that he used to distinguish a cult from mainstream religious, and based the ones he listed upon that. Each chapter was interesting and provided the belief system and how it compared with modern day Christianity and their beliefs. In the appendix, are a few religious, such as Seventh-day Adventist, that doesn't quite hit the cult status, but yet tiptoes on the edge. He gives his reasonings why and how they fit in his book from years prior. All in all, a very interesting read in learning about alternative religions, also known as cults. As a pastor for over 25 years I have had my share of having to correct the misinterpretations applied to the Bible by the cults, world religions and Christian sects. However I don't always remember every misinterpretation there is from the variety of cults there are today. I find that this book is a indispensible tool for every Christian to use not only for themselves as they grow in faith but also for witnessing to their friends and their neighborhood cults. It is of particular value not only for its thorough treatment of scripture misrepresentations and theological deceptions but also for its handiness. You can quickly find the answer to what ever scriptre is being misinterpreted though its sequential, Biblical layout from Genesis to Revelation, which I deem as being of inestimable value when you have a cult member at your front door and you need a quick answer. The information is concise and theologically correct. I plan on using it as a reference tool for my own cultic encounters but also promoting it as a handy reference tool to my congregation and in my New Christians and discipleship classes. It has a great bibliography if one wants to follow up on a particular theme, cult or sect to gain more understanding and a quick topical index to zero in points of interest. My advise is to buy it, study it and keep it handy.trafford50
