I had started this book a few years ago but I never finished because life got in the way. So in 2020 I decided that this year is the year to restart books I had never taken seriously. The January chapter is complete and I have taken steps to declutter not only my mind but also my physical surroundings. It’s a great book and I’m excited to see what the February chapter has in store.maria.d
An easy read as you go month by month. Gretchen explores things which I can relate to but makes the things that are irrelevant to my life still readable. A different thought provoking book. A nice change from a "how to" follow these instructions approach but a more warts and all approach that makes you think about your own journey.Kirst
Gretchen Rubin has come to the realization that she is not focusing on the things in life that really matter. While riding the city bus one day she looks out the window to see a woman about her age trying to balance an umbrella look at her cell phone and push a stroller while carrying a child. The site of it gave her a jolt. She saw herself riding the same crosstown bus everyday back and forth; This is my life-but I never give any thought to it." She realized she was suffering from a midlife malaise; although she lived a very fortunate life something was still missing. As she states early in the book she had everything she could possibly want but failed to appreciate it. Like most of us she was caught up in the day to day routine of life. We just go through each day and take for granted the things in life that are most important. The more she thought about this she realized that something needed to change and thus began her year long happiness project. Rubin creates a list of resolutions to focus on each month known as The Twelve Commandments. There is a list of what she calls The Secrets of Adulthood and along the way discovers Four Splendid Truths. She reads countless books on the subject of happiness by the likes of Dalai Lama Martin Seligman Aristotle Elizabeth Gilbert The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin Samuel Johnson and many others. She studies current scientific research tries meditation begins a strength training exercise program studies various spiritual leaders and their philosophies tries journaling and many other ideas in the pursuit of happiness. It is obvious that Rubin is very passionate about this project. At times a bit too analytical however I found it to be very enlightening and I really enjoyed the book. While reading "The Happiness Project" I was inspired by much of the wisdom she shared from the various books she read on the subject; I have added several of the books mentioned to my personal book list. I think anything that promotes the pursuit of a happier more fulfilled life is definitely worth reading."GerrBeck
3. The Architecture Of Happiness [Book]
Product Details:
The achitecture of happiness is a dazzling and generously illustrated journey through the philosophy and psychology of architecture and the indelible connection between our identities and our locations.one of the great but often unmentioned causes of both happiness and misery is the quality of our environment: the kinds of walls, chairs, buildings, and streets that surround us. and yet a concern for architecture is too often described as frivolous, even self-indulgent.
Reviews:
The book is used in a design office for all to see and read.Jenny
Really enjoyed reading there is a lot area covered concern about architecturerida8235_nvtpgcib
This book is written in a fantastic witty and almost poetic style, de Botton has a very unique approach to architecture and design. It is educational historically, but more than that the author explains many concepts that people rarely consciously consider. Architecture's importance is undeniable, it affects our deepest instincts whether we realize it or not – our sense of self, place, identity, security, happiness and hope. Such a deeply practical, even sensible form of design has a very real impact on us intuitively. De Botton explores these concepts in this simple, beautifully illustrated, and often funny book. Highly recommended.

The Dalai Lama is certainly a force to be reckoned with! This book is very inspiring and I loved how Howard Cutler questioned the Dalai Lama's Tibetan philosophy to our Western style of living. This book is one to keep on hand even after reading to refer back to when life has you down. OR pass it along to co-worker, friend, loved one; anyone who needs inspiration in their lives and/or loves to inspire others.wendgran7
I purchased this title after I borrowed it from someone and read it. I had to have a copy of this in my personal library. This is an GREAT book filled with very basic teachings about why, we as people, should be happy, yet often, so many of us are not. Anyone who is trying to make a positive change in their life and be happier should read this book. This book will give you very solid information about how we need to turn away from things like anger, resentment, and jealousy, while building patience, tolerance, and love. This is the type of book that can change your life if you WANT to change. A+steve_cleveland

Product Details:
#1 new york times bestseller winner of the 2014 living now book award for inspirational memoir"an enormously smart, clear-eyed, brave-hearted, and quite personal look at the benefits of meditation."—elizabeth gilbertnightline anchor dan harrisembarks on an unexpected, hilarious, and deeply skeptical odyssey through the strange worlds of spirituality and self-help, and discovers a way to get happier that is truly achievable.after having a nationally televised panic attack, dan harris knew he had to make some changes. a lifelong nonbeliever, he found himself on a bizarre adventure involving a disgraced pastor, a mysterious self-help guru, and a gaggle of brain scientists. eventually, harris realized that the source of his problems was the very thing he always thought was his greatest asset: the incessant, insatiable voice in his head, which had propelled him through the ranks of a hypercompetitive business, but had also led him to make the profoundly stupid decisions that provoked his on-air freak-out.finally, harris stumbled upon an effective way to rein in that voice, something he always assumed to be either impossible or useless: meditation, a tool that research suggests can do everything from lower your blood pressure to essentially rewire your brain. 10% happier takes readers on a ride from the outer reaches of neuroscience to the inner sanctum of network news to the bizarre fringes of america’s spiritual scene, and leaves them with a takeaway that could actually change their lives.

I was a fairly even-keeled and happy person to begin with but now I understand how we function and when things do go south, I can stay centered. good book to look into the scientific basis of happiness.dmuthukumaruk
I am studying a Masters in Applied Positive Psychology where the "How of Happiness" is a prescribed text. I found the book very readable with great exercises to try for myself and detailed references to follow up. It strikes a great balance of scientific rigour and readability for those without a psychology background. I would highly recommend it to clients, friends and fellow students of psychology.Tanya eternal Student
I found this book extremely enlightening and educational and full of helpful links to follow up on ideas/claims made. It is based on empirical research and therefore has credibility. It is highly effective and calming. I would highly recommend it. The language is very clear and explanatory yet concise and easy to read. I (and other people) have noticed changes in my way of thinking already; subconscious changes in my responses have happened just by reading it through before I have even started in earnest to work through the practical suggestions! The practice of reflecting and keeping a record of positive things that have happened, or have been achieved, or positive interactions with other people, things that you do have rather than the usual writing about all the things that went wrong, what you don't have or what didn't happen, etc is extremely effective – especially when looking back over it as you are just reading about good things that have happened to you/you have achieved rather than dwelling on all the bad things.0033sara

Reviews:
as a state expert in behavior and behavioral change, 20 professional presentations, six years teaching psych, twenty years of helping folks overcome addiction and trauma, I know a little bit about this topic. I do agree with the authors that a weekend experiential seminar is not worth much, however, their very independent or anti-dependent, focus on 'autonomy' is similar to the eighties and the kind of new aged woo woo that is preached in those types of seminars. the book is boring, the typical self help story-line, an imaginary teacher and student. humans are a combination of nature, nurture, and self choice, to state that trauma has no impact is dangerous, read up on the ACE study to learn more. Our genes play a large role in personality, like my mom said, all three boys (sons of hers), came out different, one now has a ph.d. in math, one a masters in education and a bachelors in biology, and of course me, masters in counseling/psychology. Can obstacles be overcome, of course they can, we can change, about a third of who we are, but//and our general nature of who we are, will also remain the same. self help books like this are worthless, try a group experience, Alanon, AA, NAMI, on a regular, at least weekly basis, others, anything from ballroom dance to yoga to karate, and therapy, and guaranteed, in about a years you will see some impactful change. don't buy into the simplistic, dichotomous, viewpoint of a book like this one.lewigalwa-0
Easy to read self-help book. I'm halfway through and I like that the book keeps its focus on a central principle – the Adlerian psychology. I've read and liked so much the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People which according to the this book is also following principles from Alfred Adler. Knowing this made me more interested in this book and curious as to how the youth will transform his views towards the end. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about life and wanting to learn how to live simply and happily.marap-ric
Good book but not sure I've changed how "pleasing" I tend to be. Guess I lack courage! The humble will inherit the earth … if it's alright with everyone else.Mr. Despicable
