1. The Physics Of Everyday Things: The Extraordinary Science Behind An Ordinary Day [Book]

Product Details:
Physics professor, bestselling author, and dynamic storyteller james kakalios reveals the mind-bending science behind the seemingly basic things that keep our daily lives running, from our smart phones and digital “clouds” to x-ray machines and hybrid vehicles. most of us are clueless when it comes to the physics that makes our modern world so convenient. what’s the simple science behind motion sensors, touch screens, and toasters? breaking down the world of things into a single day, kakalios engages our curiosity about how our refrigerators keep food cool, how a plane manages to remain airborne, and how our wrist fitness monitors keep track of our steps. each explanation is coupled with a story revealing the interplay of the astonishing invisible forces that surround us. through this “narrative physics,” the physics of everyday things demonstrates that—far from the abstractions conjured by terms like the higgs boson, black holes, and gravity waves—sophisticated science is also quite practical. with his signature clarity and inventiveness, kakalios ignites our imaginations and enthralls us with the principles that make up our lives.

4. The Edge Of Physics: A Journey To Earth's Extremes To Unlock The Secrets Of The Universe [Book]

Product Details:
In this deeply original book, science writer anil ananthaswamy sets out in search of the telescopes and detectors that promise to answer the biggest questions in modern cosmology. why is the universe expanding at an ever faster rate? what is the nature of the "dark matter" that makes up almost a quarter of the universe? why does the universe appear fine-tuned for life? are there others besides our own? ananthaswamy soon finds himself at the ends of the earth—in remote and sometimes dangerous places. take the atacama desert in the chilean andes, one of the coldest, driest places on the planet, where not even a blade of grass can survive. its spectacularly clear skies and dry atmosphere allow astronomers to gather brilliant images of galaxies billions of light-years away. ananthaswamy takes us inside the european southern observatory's very large telescope on mount paranal, where four massive domes open to the sky each night "like dragons waking up." he also takes us deep inside an abandoned iron mine in minnesota, where half-mile-thick rock shields physicists as they hunt for elusive dark matter particles. and to the east antarctic ice sheet, where engineers are drilling 1.5 miles into the clearest ice on the planet. they're building the world's largest neutrino detector, which could finally help reconcile quantum physics with einstein's theory of general relativity. the stories of the people who work at these and other dramatic research sites—from lake baikal in siberia to the indian astronomical observatory in the himalayas to the subterranean lair of the large hadron collider—make for a compelling new portrait of the universe and our quest to understand it. an atmospheric, engaging, and illuminating read, the edge of physics depicts science as a human process, bringing cosmology back down to earth in the most vivid terms.

5. What Is Real?: The Unfinished Quest For The Meaning Of Quantum Physics [Book]

Product Details:
"quantum mechanics is humanity's finest scientific achievement. it explains why the sun shines and how your eyes can see. it's the theory behind the leds in your phone and the nuclear hearts of space probes. every physicist agrees quantum physics is spectacularly successful. but ask them what quantum physics means, and the result will be a brawl. at stake is the nature of the universe itself. what does it mean for something to be real? what is the role of consciousness in the universe? and do quantum rules apply to very small objects like electrons and protons, but not us? in what is real?, adam becker brings to vivid life the brave researchers whose quest for the truth led them to challenge bohr: david bohm, who picked up einstein's mantle and sought to make quantum mechanics deterministic, all while being hounded by the forces of mccarthyism; hugh everett, who argued that everything, big and small, must be governed by the same rules; and john bell, who went to great lengths to eradicate the power of the god-like observer from the core of quantum physics. and they paid dearly, their reputations, careers, and sometimes lives ruined completely. but history has been kinder to them than their contemporaries were. as becker shows, the brave intellectual giants have inspired a growing army of physicists and philosophers intent both on making a philosophically more satisfying theory of the universe and a more useful one as well. a gripping story of some of humanity's greatest ideas and the high cost with which many have pursued them, what is real? is intellectual history at its passionate best"–

This writer make the complex easy to understand. I never thought I would have any insight to quantum physics. My idea of fun might be different than other people, but this was a fun read.risingmtn
The most insightful work on Quantum Foundations yet. The author has done his research and told the history with brutal honesty and deep insight. Some Physicists feel that our lack of understanding of the phenomena themselves is not a problem. That is a matter of opinion. What is not an opinion is that we have not been able to explain what the subatomic entities are or how they can behave in such strange ways. This book really takes an honest aim at our inadequacies in attempting to explain these foundational questions.paulpinelle

7. Einstein's Unfinished Revolution: The Search For What Lies Beyond The Quantum [Book]

Product Details:
A daring new vision of quantum theory from one of the leading minds of contemporary physics quantum physics is the golden child of modern science. it is the basis of our understanding of atoms, radiation, and so much else, from elementary particles and basic forces to the behavior of materials. but for a century it has also been the problem child of science: it has been plagued by intense disagreements between its inventors, strange paradoxes, and implications that seem like the stuff of fantasy. whether it's schrödinger's cat–a creature that is simultaneously dead and alive–or a belief that the world does not exist independently of our observations of it, quantum theory challenges our fundamental assumptions about reality. in einstein's unfinished revolution, theoretical physicist lee smolin provocatively argues that the problems which have bedeviled quantum physics since its inception are unsolved and unsolvable, for the simple reason that the theory is incomplete. there is more to quantum physics, waiting to be discovered. in this vibrant and accessible book, smolin takes us on a journey through the basics of quantum physics, introducing the stories of the experiments and figures that have transformed our understanding of the universe, before wrestling with the puzzles and conundrums that the quantum world presents. along the way, he illuminates the existing theories that might solve these problems, guiding us towards a vision of the quantum that embraces common sense realism. in einstein's unfinished revolution, lee smolin brings us a step closer to resolving one of the greatest scientific controversies of our age.
Reviews:
The extraordinary power of Mr Smolin’s intellect is well demonstrated here. A lesser mind will struggle with some of his arguments. As a general rule do not read more than two pages at a time, before re-reading them. Make make sure you have fully understood, before venturing further into the strange world that he portrays.

8. The Trouble With Physics: The Rise Of String Theory, The Fall Of A Science, And What Comes Next [Book]

Product Details:
In this illuminating book, the renowned theoretical physicist lee smolin argues that fundamental physics — the search for the laws of nature — is losing its way. smolin offers an unblinking assessment of string theory and encourages a new direction for where the next big idea may lead. ambitious ideas about extra dimensions, exotic particles, multiple universes, and strings have captured the public's imagination — and the imagination of experts. but these ideas have not been tested experimentally, and some, like string theory, seem to offer no possibility of being tested. yet these speculations dominate the field — attracting the best talent and much of the funding. modern science has created a climate in which emerging physicists are often penalized for pursuing less popular avenues. as smolin points out, the situation threatens to impede the very progress of science. with clarity, passion, and authority, smolin charts the rise and fall of string theory and takes a fascinating look at what will replace it. smolin not only tells us who and what to watch for in the coming years, he offers novel solutions for seeking out and nurturing the best new talent — giving us a chance, at long last, of finding the next einstein.
Reviews:
Fascinating read for a non academic.tallships28
This is the book about modern physics that I have been waiting for. Lee Smolin published in the field of string theory for many years and has written this book that explains the problems with it and modern physics in general. Understanding the book requires an understanding of basic physics. There is no math but every problem is explained in detail. He compares the types of problems that modern physicists are experiencing with the problems that previous generations of physicists had with their own discoveries. By analogy, the problems are similar. He is thus implying that there are major problems with string theory and also with the direction modern physics is heading. I found the book very informative and very well written.edwardkrivoniak
If you're interested in the development of String Theory and it's pitfalls this is a book worth getting to grips with. Yes it is a hard read, but if you're interested in String Theory you're probably able to get to work your way through it.redcarbatterystacks

This is an excellent little text. There are some minor errors here and there but they do not detract from big picture science.
Discovery Channel has just released 25 episodes TV series based on this book – and what a book it is. Don't you ever wish that a top class scientist that is just as big of a Science Fiction fan as you are come and explain how things work? Is it possible to create a solid sword based on light beam like Star Wars' light sabers? Apparently it is not that easy once you learn that light beam tend to stretch forever – and light (which, obviously, travels at the speed of light) is impossible to solidify. Perhaps they should try plasma sabers instead. How hard is it to create invisibility cloak of in Harry Potter series or Romulan starship? Apparently some scientist already created metamaterials that bend light around 2 dimensional objects! Based on quite recent research (up to mid 2000s), Prof. Michio Kaku explains in layman term the most groundbreaking scientific discoveries – and how it impacts your chance of owning your own Teleportation device. It is a great read.
This book is a very good overview of a bunch of modern theoretical physics concepts. Kaku does an amazing job of explaining tough concepts (quantum physics, wormholes, ect.) with good examples & quotes from some of the most brilliant people on the planet.dukeabu2

Very interesting scientific approach to the concept of Immortality and Almighty God!!!software786
This book is funny and pretty good for having been written by a non-believer. I like how he backs up what I already know using observations in the universe that are not so obvious to most of us lay-persons. I bought the book because it was recommended by a time-travelling friend who says the author is correct in his hypotheses. He may be correct but what he says is still slightly "One Step Beyond" when he does mathematical equations. I like reading the book.phylenna

Reviews:
Discusses how the world of modern physics has shown not to be as absolute as classic physics, and that future development of physics looks a lot dile Taoism. Its easy to follow. It is written for the average reader. The CD audiobook is rare. Its an easy listen if you get a hold of a copy.mschnittker
