1. My Utmost For His Highest [Book]

Product Details:
My utmost for his highest has been a proven, best-selling devotional for many years. over the past century, oswald chambers's writings have inspired countless people to drink deeply from the biblical truths that he so passionately championed. his words are simultaneously penetrating and invigorating, and they trigger something in your soul leaving you forever changed. the biblical thoughts and themes that chambers delivers in this updated-language edition will resonate with you as you seek to grow your faith.
Reviews:
This is one of the best books ever written. Chambers was a true prophet of God. Like the Bible, the truths written in the text are ageless. The book expands on many of the scriptures of the Bible to the deeper spiritual levels. This would not be a book for new Christians, but for Christians who have walked with God for a while and are seeking to become one with Him. If you are serious about making a full commitment to God, this is the book for you.ralphandbeau2011
It can be a great QT book for people who can only spare 5 minutes a day. Though it is a short page read, it is quite profound in a simple kind of way. For a new believer, I think this book will help him/her understand the "relationship" factor between the reader and the Christ. For the seasoned believer who may have lost their way because of doctrine and therefore, it has caused an heartache, this book can help you feel Jesus the way you first met Him.ablelife
This book gets you closer to God and helps you understand what a relationship with God truly is. Chambers was a man of God in a deep and profound way. Charles Stanley said that this book was one that had the greatest impact on his life after the Bible. Chambers makes you want the deep relationship he has with God, He inspires and motivates you to be a different person. When I first read this book years ago, I marked passages and had ? there. I didn't "get" those things, but I knew I wanted to. Over the years, I have read and reread this book and the ? go away and I am blessed.ibsmiley

4. Mere Christianity By C. S Lewis

Product Details:
In 1941 england, when all hope was threatened by the inhumanity of war, c. s. lewis was invited to give a series of radio lectures addressing the central issues of christianity. more than half a century later, these talks continue to retain their poignancy. first heard as informal radio broadcasts on the bbc, the lectures were published as three books and subsequently combined as "mere christianity." c. s. lewis proves that "at the center of each there is something, or a someone, who against all divergences of belief, all differences of temperament, all memories of mutual persecution, speaks with the same voice," rejecting the boundaries that divide christianity's many denominations. this twentieth century masterpiece provides an unequaled opportunity for believers and nonbelievers alike to hear a powerful, rational case for the christian faith. with a new foreword by lewis's stepson, douglas gresham, this illustrated gift edition evokes the historic time and place of the book's creation.
Reviews:
I love reading books cover to cover, so I always read the forward and intro’s. So worth it and helpful to understanding Lewis’ context and where the book is coming from. He’s been my favorite author since I was a kid yet I hadn’t gotten around to reading all of his titles. So this is helping me on my way. Format is lovely, the pages alternate in width in a nice pattern that’s comfortable for my fingers to skim through, the font size is easy to read and it reads like a bit of a conversation (which was the intent, being transcribed from a radio broadcast series).Cass M.
How many of us are prepared to answer the hard questions of life? So many times when people ask difficult questions about Christianity and the way Christians see the world we are not ready to give an answer This classic book by CS Lewis can help remedy that issue Although the book was written way back in the 1940's the contents are timeless After all the condition of man has changed little over the centuries We still wrestle with the same issues and questions that men have struggled with through the agesIs there a God? Why should we believe in Him? If he is so good why does he allow so much bad in our world? Is Jesus really the Son of God? Why did Jesus have to Die? All these hard questions are answered in Mere Christianity Not only are the answers there they are remarkably easy to understand given the weightiness of the topics These topics were originally a series of BBC discussions; later in life CS Lewis added to them and published them in book form However he attempted to keep the informal tone to his works to keep them as down to earth and understandable to as many people as possible It is my opinion that he succeeded This would be a great resource for older teens and young adults going away to college In the society in which we now live where the basic tenets of Christianity are under continual attack it is essential that young and old alike be well grounded in the faith Many times Christians may have great faith but lack the ability to explain it to others This book by CS Lewis will help with that While this paperback may be inexpensive the contents are quite valuable
Clive Lewis is an amazing layman Christian. If you are already a Christian you will find insight and understanding for living the life and walking the walk. If you are a seeker and not yet surrendered you will find encouragement for your journey. In this book he presents the argument for the golden rule of doing unto others as you would have them do unto you. It is not "In your face, repent or suffer." He presents the Christian walk with common sense and day to day living. I love this guy.navion01

Reviews:
About this Book: Point blank this is a punchy no-holds-barred book for young men. Laying out the challenges to be disciplined godly and sold-out for Jesus the authors talk about purity in your thought-life cultural pressure and perserverance as a Christian. Let father and son Ken and Carey Hughes help you live a life of integrity and become the man God is calling you to be. Our Thoughts: I have to be honest and tell you that when Disciplines of a Godly Young Man arrived in the mail I handed it to my husband and asked him to read it for review so this review is all his thoughts on the book. As parents to a son we would love nothing less to see him grow up in the Lord get saved and live sold-out for Jesus in everything he does. This book covers 14 disciplines such as friendship prayer work our speech witnessing tithing and more that all Christian men (regardless of age) need to have in their lives. Each chapter contains not only their thoughts/writings but also includes Food for Thought" a life application that summarizes what you've read in that particular chapter and even a list of additional resources for the discipline you've just learned about. My husband said this book was filled with lots of "sports stories" and since it is written to be geared toward young men and their fathers I guess that is why they chose sports stories. However if you are not a big sports fan (like my husband who prefers the outdoors to a sports event) you quickly get tired of the sports illustrations. Thankfully he said there were a few non-sports related illustrations but sports seemed to be the theme of illustrations and stories in this book. At 180 pages this book is very easy to read and written in a manner that young men could easily understand as well. Disciplines of a Godly Young Man is available through Crossway and not only makes a great father/son study but would make a great small group Bible study as well. It would also be a wonderful homeschool Bible study for middle and high school age young men as well."RollTideGirl
Good price on a book I was looking for.tn-boilerman
What is discipline? For many people the first answer that comes to mind is punishing a child to correct a wrong. That's part of it but there's so much more. The basic meaning of 'discipline' is training. 'Train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value godliness is of value in every way as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance' (2 Timothy 4:7-9). Based upon this passage Disciplines of a Godly Young Man encourages young men to develop and nurture twelve different disciplines grouped in four categories in order to be godly. After a couple of introductory chapters they are Relationships: Purity Friendship; Soul: Mind Devotion Prayer; Character: Tongue Work Perseverance; and Ministry: Church Giving Witness Ministry followed by a concluding chapter on the 'Grace of Discipline.' The theme of the book is found on pages 22-23: 'Understanding this we now get down to the reason for this book which is that in today's world and church young Christian men who are disciplined are the exception not the rule. Why? The answer is that the popular politically correct culture of the new millennium suppresses manliness and especially the manliness and leadership of young men who attempt to follow Christ. The reasons are several (feminism entertainment and legalism) and together they are daunting.' Under 'Purity ' the talk about sex is frank though certainly not salacious but it is very true and needed! There are some excellent comments under 'Mind' about television and movies under 'Work' about the need for a spiritually disciplined work life and under 'Church' about the importance of church attendance and the benefits of worship. Also the Hugheses have a great discussion about the difference between discipline and legalism. I will say that the use of all the sports examples apparently cited to make the book appealing to young men in our athletic-saturated society leaves me somewhat cold because I am totally disinterested in sports. However I suspect that many readers will find them meaningful and other kinds of illustrations are provided for those who are not into athletics. Depending upon their religious background there may be a few word usages and theological concepts with which some may disagree. However these differences are minor to the purpose of the book and I think that Disciplines of a Godly Young Man would make a great resource for use in a 'life curriculum' for a homeschooled teenage boy. R. Kent Hughes who authored Disciplines of a Godly Man is 'Senior Pastor Emeritus' of College Church in Wheaton IL and his son Carey Hughes is 'Senior Pastor' of Christ the Redeemer Church in Spokane WA. Kent's wife Barbara wrote Disciplines of a Godly Woman and together they produced Disciplines of a Godly Family.Home School Book Review

8. Manual For Men [Book]

Product Details:
Manual for men is for men who are in the arena, warriors for christ and his church. it is for those men who battle daily for their souls and for their family. in part i, bishop thomas olmsted calls for catholic men to step up and "into the breach" in service to god, their families, parishes, and wider communities. in part ii, cook presents a treasure trove of prayers, church teachings, and writings from the saints that serve as a tremendous source of inspiration for men seeking to become better men of god. it is at once an essential guide and a profound book of prayers designed specifically for men. now, perhaps more than ever, men need to be men. but what it means to be a man has been twisted into a pale and mangled image of true manhood. manual for men serves as a field guide and instruction manual for those husbands, fathers, sons and brothers who would become real men of god– men who protect, physically and spiritually, those entrusted to them; men who sacrifice, pray, fight, love, and live by the example of christ. there is a battle for our souls, our families, our world, and our lord calls us men to fight. are you ready to answer the call? will you accept bishop olmsted's plea to "engage in the battle that is raging around you"?
Reviews:
”]An inspiration every time I open it . I am working on daily reading. Love the messages.”[email
I chose the audiobook for practical reasons. The book would probably work even better as a physical book, where it really is a manual, a "hand-book," that you have "at hand," so you can look it up and use it in your daily life. In terms of content, the book is excellent and a real help in my life as a Christian and as a man. The content also has a freedom and some surprising qualities that I find fascinating. You should hear it several times so that it sits on your spine, not to mention in your soul.René Y.
9. The Year Of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble Quest To Follow The Bible As Literally As Possible [Book]

Product Details:
Now a tv series living biblically streaming on cbs all access! from the new york times bestselling author of the know-it-all comes a fascinating and timely exploration of religion and the bible. jacobs chronicles his hilarious and thoughtful year spent obeying―as literally as possible―the tenets of the bible.raised in a secular family but increasingly interested in the relevance of faith in our modern world, a.j. jacobs decides to dive in headfirst and attempt to obey the bible as literally as possible for one full year. he vows to follow the ten commandments. to be fruitful and multiply. to love his neighbor. but also to obey the hundreds of less publicized rules: to avoid wearing clothes made of mixed fibers; to play a ten-string harp; to stone adulterers. the resulting spiritual journey is at once funny and profound, reverent and irreverent, personal and universal and will make you see history’s most influential book with new eyes. jacobs’s quest transforms his life even more radically than the year spent reading the entire encyclopedia britannica for the know-it-all. his beard grows so unruly that he is regularly mistaken for a member of zz top. he immerses himself in prayer, tends sheep in the israeli desert, battles idolatry, and tells the absolute truth in all situations—much to his wife’s chagrin. throughout the book, jacobs also embeds himself in a cross-section of communities that take the bible literally. he tours a kentucky-based creationist museum and sings hymns with pennsylvania amish. he dances with hasidic jews in brooklyn and does scripture study with jehovah’s witnesses. he discovers ancient biblical wisdom of startling relevance. and he wrestles with seemingly archaic rules that baffle the twenty-first-century brain. jacobs’s extraordinary undertaking yields unexpected epiphanies and challenges. a book that will charm readers both secular and religious, the year of living biblically is part cliff notes to the bible, part memoir, and part look into worlds unimaginable. thou shalt not be able to put it down.
Reviews:
i have been a practising Christian for very many years and am a member of the Methodist Church. this book gave me a much better insight to the practices of people who follow the Jewish faith and the relevance (or otherwise!) of the teachings of the Old Testament in the 21st Century. This should be a set book for all people training to be Methodist Local Preachers and other Churches Members who take on the responsibility of leadership in Churchesmichaelclark42
This is one of the most profound books I have read. Through the careful deployment of humour Jacobs is able to drive home points that are sorely needed in today's harried and secular society. I currently do not own a copy of this book as I have given away every copy I have bought. In addition, I have recommended this book to many friends and colleagues. The light and chatty style of the book makes for easy reading. The comical, often absurd, antics of Jacobs throughout his year compel you to keep reading, wondering what bizarre situation he will find himself in next. It is the little reflections that Jacobs drops in that make the book so significant. I have often paused while reading to reflect on the true power of what he has just "discovered" through his experiment.
I was very dissappointed in this book. I couldn't even finish it. I felt the only reason the author wrote to book was to make some money. It is like he had no real interest in the subject. He just wanted to come up with a hook to sale books. I thought this book could have been so much more. He is a good writer and he could have written some-thing exciting and interesting.natasha

Product Details:
His god given vision to challenge men to stop being spiritual sissies, man up and except gods challenge to be "the light of the world" inspired him to put this vision in a book to share with others. jody's self-described "damascus road transformation" led him on a journey to search the scripture to find what he had been missing his whole life, jesus christ. in this journey, the word if god took over in a way he never expected. searching for men in the church to help in him in his walk, he found very little help and in the process found men that needed the same kind of help. "church had become a religion, not a relationship" says jody in his book. the relationship he is talking about is the relationship with jesus christ and it seemed as if men in the church had become complacent and not living up to the challenge to live a separated life.

Are you going through a difficult time of some sort? Or do you know someone else who is? Max Lucado's new book You'll Get Through This is full of hope and encouragement for someone who is walking through challenges. You'll Get Through This brings the story of Joseph from the Bible alive though Max Lucado's way with words. Joseph's story is brought to life from the time he was that pain-in-the neck little brother until God ultimately puts him in charge during famine. A lot of ground and a lot of time goes by. Times where it was hard to see that God was working on Joseph's behalf. Still Joseph holds fast to his belief in God. In the end God does make good from the evil intended for Joseph in this life and rewards his faith. Max Lucado says that God can do in your life and my life what he did in Joseph's life when Joseph felt forgotten by God in the waiting. But in the meantime we have to not be foolish or naive and we must not despair . . .Max Lucado says those are the important things. It probably won't be painless and it likely won't be quick but God will work it out for your good in the end if you will continue to have faith in Him Lucado says. There is no doubt that Max Lucado is a gifted storyteller from his previous books. However I think this is one of my favorite Lucado books. Perhaps because I have been going through hard times and I lean towards despair in dark times. This book helps me visualize God working on Joseph's behalf and ultimately on my behalf as well. Throughout the book there are also many other stories of people that have gone through hard times and Lucado shows that God was working in their life or through their life for someone else. It is simply one of the most hope-filled books outside of the Bible that I've read in recent times as I continue to hold on to my faith some days quite small but I hold on. I also found the questions in the back of this book to be very helpful and thought-provoking–they are worth taking the time to think through. I highly recommend it. I received this book at no charge to me from Thomas Nelson. I was not required to write a positive review.Monica H
Excellent book. I'm facing a very serious and scary medical issue right now, where they still don't have all the answers. This book helped me tremendously to deal with my fears and "what-ifs." Very simple and to the point. I wasn't a big Max Lucado fan before, but I AM NOW.Sharon H.

Reviews:
This book has made my understanding of the reasons behind why people became Christians in the first place clear. It is a profound factual book which lays out the historical evidence of all that Jesus did and people who knew Him did at that time. It also includes references to historical texts existing at the time the bible was written that support the bible as evidence. Well worth the purchase. I am so grateful to have read it. John Rosemond referenced it in "Parenting By the Book" and after implementing the practical advice in the latter and reading the former; my life has become so much easier and happier. It has been an amazing change, and I wish all the same happiness to all who read it.Mother = Leader
This book was an immense help to me in coming to faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. I was over 50 years old before I accepted Jesus as my Lord. Like so many people wrestling with life's problems and questions I had many things which I wanted to know about the truth of Jesus. This book was written by a journalist who started out from an atheist point of view to investigate and disprove the existence & claims of Jesus . Did he really exist ? If so, can we believe his claim to be the Son of God? and did he rise from the dead? Our external fate rests on believing in him – this book brilliantly talks through the doubts many have. The answers shocked the author and changed his life forever.flickydog
The Case for Christ uses scripture and commentary to explore the existence of Christ and how to prove it to oneself or others. The author uses theologically sound arguments based on a series of questions listed below: Questions raised: Can the biographies of Jesus be trusted?Do the biographies of Jesus stand up to scrutiny? Were Jesus' biographies reliably preserved for us?Is there credible evidence for Jesus outside his biographies?Does archaeology confirm or contradict Jesus' biographies? Is the Jesus of history the same as the Jesus of faith? Was Jesus really convinced that he was the son of God?Did Jesus fulfill the attributes of Gof?Did Jesus-And Jesus alone-Match the identity of the Messiah? Was Jesus' death a sham and his resurrection a hoax? Was Jesus' body really absent from his tomb? Was Jesus seen alive after his death on the cross? Are there any supporting facts that point to the resurrection? What does the evidence establish–and what does it mean today? In reading reviews of this book, I noticed that many who are non-believers did not feel that it convinced them of Christ's existence. They felt the book was only useful to Christians. I personally feel that this book would be a helpful tool for Christians to study for the purposes of witnessing to non-believers. Expecting non-believers to voluntarily pick up this book to read it is likely unrealistic if they simply do not care to know as many did state was the case for them. I give this book a 5-star rating and recommend it for seekers and for believers as tool to study or to witness. I received a copy of this book from netgalley. I was not required to write a review. This is a great book! It is a bible study book for men and it is very useful for a men's bible study group. I highly recommend that this book should be purchased because it points out a lot of questions that men think about, however, they may not always express these questions.cupcakedavis
First things first, this is not a football book or a traditional self-help book. This is the story of Tony Dungy's journey from high school to the Super Bowl and everywhere in between. It recounts his life based on his Christian faith and the incredible opportunities God has blessed him with. He implores the reader to trust God's plan in every single aspect of life, demonstrated by his story and rewards through faith alone. From playing for the Steelers, to the suicide of his son Jamie, to being the first African American coach to win the Super Bowl, the book is nothing short of spectacular. It is filled with principles of faith and words to live by. I could not recommend it more. Do yourself a favor and read it. You will not regret it, trust me. Psalm 27:1myfavoritethings0922

19. The Masculine Mandate: God's Calling To Men [Book]

Product Details:

Reviews:
There is so much bad information and male bashing in the marketplace, it was refreshing to read a book that actually helps today's men understand and be secure in their masculine roles. The author was typically clear and on target throughout the book, although in a couple of areas it seemed a little labored, like he stayed a too long on one point. Phillips helped me focus on what it takes to be a better man, a better husband, a better father, and a better all around person. "The Maculine Mandate" is a good book with a sound biblical perspective for men. It would be a good read for women to better understand their men.tkavadas
I use The Masculine Mandate as a text for my teaching in a men's recovery program.petedor_21
