Thanks to NetGalley & Doubleday Books for a digital advance reader's copy. All comments and opinions are my own. This novel, a debut no less, was all over the place for me. Funny, satirical, sad, ironic, entertaining, witty, with elements of fantasy and feminism. And don't forget the magic realism of the dog. So did I like the novel and how would I rate it? I'm giving it 4 stars – read my review to find out why. Cleverly written with a quirky and memorable heroine, this is the story of chemist Elizabeth Zott. In the 1950s, when the story begins, it was very nearly impossible to be anything but a housewife/mother, nurse, or secretary. But Elizabeth fights against stereotypes throughout the novel – whether it's cooking, rowing, motherhood, or chemistry. Elizabeth's on-the-spectrum personality (literal, headstrong, blunt) propels the plot. And the plot is brilliant – things happen and people connect (and reconnect) in ways that both surprised me and had me admiring how the author fit everything together. There were several provoking aspects to the story – some of which were the way people misunderstood each other, the sexist attitudes, and how some characters fought against and often overcame the 1950s cultural norms. What gives the novel depth is that the story is told from different characters' points of view, including Six-Thirty, the dog. And these characters were compelling. The reader learns what each is thinking, and why, and we can often anticipate the way things will be misunderstood, which makes for laughs as well as sighs. While the book contains a great deal of wit, as another reviewer mentioned, there are serious issues including brutal abuse which is described in detail, and a suicide due to homophobia. And the sexism is rampant which unfortunately was how it was back in the 1950s, with some areas still troublesome today. But in the end the bad guys get their comeuppance, with loose ends tied up, providing a satisfying conclusion.PhyllisE

The story of the struggle for success in Hollywood, particularly that of a reluctant child and an obsessed stage mother is well-worn territory. So what made this worth reading? Ms. McCurdy spent several years as a Nickleodean star in the early 2000s, even dabbling in a recording career. What makes this so compelling is her ability and willingness to share painful and unique details of her life, as well as that of her families' struggles, and how she was manipulated by her Mother and other adults at the network. She draws you in with a competing conversational style, and doesn't hold back on anything. By the end of the book, the reader is left feeling both moved and pleased with her decisions and intelligence in deciding to move beyond the grief left behind by her experiences. I was drawn from page to page and finished it in one sitting. I'll probably reread it more slowly, to be able to contemplate her unsparing exposition of the path she took to reach this point in her life. I wish her well. Buy it!fisheye

Anthony Doerr has written an amazing a gem. At first, the book was confusing, moving back and forth in time and between characters. However, the more I read, the more engaged I became in the intriguing tale. CLOUD CUCKOO LAND is a book within a book filled with a cast of well developed characters, each in their own story. The characters are so well developed — Omeir and his animals, Anna, Konstance, Zeno and even Seymour — I loved them all, and appreciated how their stories contributed to a satisfying conclusion. I would not change anything in this amazing book about the past and present. I will soon be reading this book again. It is that good!!!Linann

This was fun to work through with on my own and with my wife. Illustrations are so colorful and detailed with kooky character designs that really are enjoyable to look at. Twenty puzzles are plenty to make this unique puzzle book worth the purchase. However, some murder or finder puzzles are so difficult, even with a hint, that it took several hours over a couple nights before I gave up and looked at the solution (this is with the help of 2 or 3 people too). This contrasts with some that are too easy and can be solved in a couple minutes. I think what could have helped balance the difficulty of the more challenging ones was to include more details in the set-up stories. The hints were only helpful in some instances but most of the time they didn't help me to get started if I was really stuck. #sweepstakesfocuspocus
I love mysteries that you can actually solve so was excited to order this book. The stories are very entertaining. I didn't realize that the mysteries are solved using the illustrations and not the text. It makes it unique but I would prefer having clues in both text and illustrations. I have to admit that I had put this book off for a long time when I found out that Robert Galbraith was a pseudonym for J.K. Rowling. I had liked her Harry Potter books at the beginning, although the terrible grammar made my head spin at times, but ended up putting that series aside when I connected some subtle dots between some characters of Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” and “Harry Potter”. I didn’t like it. And so I lost respect for her as an author. But that was my opinion that was not shared by everyone and I accept that. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion right? I dare say yes. And then this year I was asked by a lovely lady if I would read “The Silkworm” for their book site and so I said ‘Sure’ because she has given me other fantastic books to read and I trusted her judgement perfectly. And not to mention, if I want to be an unbiased reviewer I can’t be picky, now can I? So I decided to start from the beginning and read “The Cuckoo’s Calling” because as far as I’m concerned you can’t read a second book in a series without reading the first. There could be some important information in there and it gives you more time to get to know the characters of those stories. And I wasn’t disappointed! My first impression of the book was one of annoyance. The sentences seemed to go on forever and have so many commas that made it rough to read – having to go back to the beginning of the sentence to figure out what I had just read. I might have been in the wrong frame of mind, or have read too many books where sentences are shorter and less theatrical: like as if I was watching a dramatic play or something. But after a while I got into the flow of it and the sentences started to run smoothly, the description painted a clearer picture and ultimately I got dragged into those poetic sentences. Strike was a fascinating character but at the beginning he didn’t stand out much at all. Nothing set him aside from Joe Blow down the road and so he kind of melted into the background for a bit even though the whole story was based around him. But as the story went on, I got to know him a bit more, even found myself liking him. He doesn’t like to stand out in a crowd, he’s calm, quiet and very perceptive. So my initial thought of him of blending into the background is him…down to a T. And no matter how Galbraith tried to make him look “unattractive” to the reader, I completely forgot about his scruffiness, bulky size and receding hairline. Those (except for the limp) were the last things I would associate with Strike. The story itself was a fantastic read. I myself, have never read many “mystery novels” having stopped short of them by reading “mystery crime” ones like those written by Kathy Reichs. And so this was my first real taste of a mystery and I was along for the ride. At so many turns you could second guess the ending but only be thrown off course by something else. And so the tragedy of becoming a detective myself was realised. I hadn’t a CLUE who was the killer and yet, I shouldn’t have, shouldn’t I? The answers were probably written right there in front of me and yet I was enjoying the book so much I couldn’t see it. That was the brilliance of this story: the killer could have been ANYONE, literally, anyone! It was brilliant! So two thumbs up to Robert Galbraith for a wonderful novel and the next one (I imagine) is going to be just as great!
As her seven Harry Potter & her Casual Vacancy books, this author is a master at creating the most interesting people and their behaviors. To me, her books are "the masterpiece theater" of the reading world. Love this mystery so glad there are more! …The Silkworm and Career of Evil to follow. J.K.Rowling has proven that she can venture into territories other than fantasy. This book is a huge leap from the Boy Who Lived. The mystery she has setup around the murder in the book compels you to read the whole book in one seating. She has masterfully created characters and brings them to reality in Cuckoo's Calling. You feel for some characters and then there are others who keep you guessing that maybe, maybe he/she is the murderer. But, with Rowling, nothing is that easily predictable until you get to the end. You think you know whose the killer but she gets you off that wagon and creates a huge twist. A recommended reading for those who are into crime fiction..and for those Rowling fanatics who are willing to stick with her through and through all her works.Ashneel

This book illustrates three concepts: Cooking a full meal isn’t difficult or expensive, that we can be inventive with leftovers, and because of those first two, you can entertain people in your home more often. So there are full menus for meals, though you can be “inventive” and mix-and-match things however you can, like, or need. The recipes come from around the world, with lots of variety for today’s palate. I love the cilantro and coconut chutney, which reminds me of one of my favorite “salsas” when I taught overseas. That chutney is served on a breakfast menu with scrambled eggs, flatbread, and a mango dish, which for leftovers, is repurposed into egg salad, little pizzas, and a mango chutney. I use this book every day!! It's funny, easily to understand, helpful, creative ad has amazing dishes. Majority are for the everyday but then there are some recipes that are good for if you want to impress those that think being vegan is boring! Without this book I think I would have been eating the same thing most of the time. There are even meal ideas at the back of the book that put recipes together (eg. a Mexican themed meal). The recipes may have some ingedients that aren't in you pantry but they are easy enough to buy at the supermarket or local health food store.Go Vegan
