Reviews:
When I first had kids, I felt so clueless and I tried to read everything I could get my hands on, plus ask other parents people lots of questions. It’s kind of a cliche that in our culture to say that kids don’t come with a manual, so I sure appreciate that the folks at Quirk took that thought seriously and published Stuff Every Mom Should Know. It is written by the authors of the blog RookieMoms and has real world advice, not pithy or unhelpful ideas, but suggestions that I would definitely use, from the baby years up to teens. They answer all kinds of questions, like how to take care of a baby on an airplane or how to rid a bedroom of monsters. They also give tips for things like what foods your teen should know how to cook or how to put a positive spin on what you say in front of your kids. For example, instead of saying, “Charlie’s mom is an idiot”, you could say, “I don’t agree with Charlie’s mom’s choices”. I can really relate to having to stop myself and trying to say things in a way that would set a good example and I appreciate their hints. What I also found in reading through Stuff Every Mom Should Know, is that the principles of what they are getting at really shine through and not just the specific practices. That is a help to me to know what to do in any situation, even those not listed in the book.Michelle

Just recently purchased this book and I am very excited to read a more modern, “today’s” view of pregnancy. Fingers crossed!Rachel K.
I got this book for a friend and she adores it. It is very homeopathic forward but backs her claims up with evidence. Everything you want in a pregnancy book. I’m excited to read it myself when it’s my time.Robin C.

Reviews:
I did like this book. Some of the things that the author suggests are just easier said than done. What I enjoyed the most about it were the "Dirty Little Secrets" that were shared every few pages, because I have a list of my own that would be liberating to share as well. I believe all mother do. I originally sought out this book because I felt trapped by motherhood, and I just wanted reassurance that I wasn't the only mom out there who was not in love with being a parent. Still searching for that book that clicks.mainomccraney
I am a new mom as of August 07. This book was an easy read, funny, to the point and helped me relate and relax at times when I thought for sure I was going to lose it!girl1123
This book was much better than her follow up book. I loved reading other moms honesty about their struggles to be a good mom. This book was humorous and was well written and did not make motherhood sound like it was all sugar, spice and everything nice 24/7. I would recommend it.collectingharmony

12. I'm Glad My Mom Died (Hardcover) Simon & Schuster

Product Details:
Jennette mccurdy details how she overcame harrowing struggles as a child tv star—including anorexia and bulimia, addiction, severe obsessive-compulsive disorder and a traumatic relationship with her mother. a heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by icarly and sam & cat star jennette mccurdy about her struggles as a former child actor—including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother—and how she retook control of her life. jennette mccurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. so she went along with what mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. she endured extensive at-home makeovers while mom chided, “your eyelashes are invisible, okay? you think dakota fanning doesn’t tint hers?” she was even showered by mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. in i’m glad my mom died, jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail—just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. cast in a new nickelodeon series called icarly, she is thrust into fame. though mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (“hi gale!”), jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships. these issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the icarly spinoff sam & cat alongside ariana grande, her mother dies of cancer. finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants. told with refreshing candor and dark humor, i’m glad my mom died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.
Reviews:
The story of the struggle for success in Hollywood, particularly that of a reluctant child and an obsessed stage mother is well-worn territory. So what made this worth reading? Ms. McCurdy spent several years as a Nickleodean star in the early 2000s, even dabbling in a recording career. What makes this so compelling is her ability and willingness to share painful and unique details of her life, as well as that of her families' struggles, and how she was manipulated by her Mother and other adults at the network. She draws you in with a competing conversational style, and doesn't hold back on anything. By the end of the book, the reader is left feeling both moved and pleased with her decisions and intelligence in deciding to move beyond the grief left behind by her experiences. I was drawn from page to page and finished it in one sitting. I'll probably reread it more slowly, to be able to contemplate her unsparing exposition of the path she took to reach this point in her life. I wish her well. Buy it!fisheye
How does one begin to describe a woman who was a writer from birth but forced into acting but a complicated and narcissistic mother? Make no mistake, Jennette is aa wordsmith with a gift for dialogue. As a counsellor, I often see these memoirs end at the rick bottom stage and then go in with a sweeping epilogue if health abd wealth. Jennette us having none of that. She's done the work and writes of how hard it was to recover from mother. I've not been so struck by a voice in many years. Thank heavens Mom's death made way for Jennette's true colours. How bright and alive they are.

Reviews:
Becoming a mother is a huge transition and our expectations may be different from what we experience. It can feel isolating especially if we feel like what we’re experiencing is unique or “not normal” when in fact many moms are feeling or thinking the same things. This book does a wonderful job of normalizing the very real challenges of motherhood. For me it is like a scrapbook of the influential moments that I had with other mothers along the journey when they helped me to realize that I was not alone. Even better, it includes conversations about topics that I haven’t had but needed. I loved that these pages validated my own experience and that I could share this book with my husband to help him understand what I was experiencing so we could better support one another. I wish I’d found this sooner and was so happy to share it with my sister and a friend when they became mother’s themselves. Share this with a mom even if she seems to have a wonderful support system.MN
it’s a great book for new moms and even experienced moms! – i’m not a mom, but i wanted to read it for educational purposes. i am buying the book for a friend!tb
16. I Am Not Your Baby Mother: What It's Like To Be A Black British Mother [Book]

Product Details:
When candice fell pregnant and stepped into the motherhood playing field, she found her experience bore little resemblance to the glossy magazine photos of women in horizontal stripe tops and the pinned discussions on mumsnet about what pushchair to buy. leafing through the piles of prenatal paraphernalia, she found herself wondering: "where are all the black mothers?". candice started blogging about motherhood in 2016 after making the simple but powerful observation that the way motherhood is portrayed in the british media is wholly unrepresentative of our society at large. the result is this thought-provoking, urgent and inspirational guide to life as a black mother. it explores the various stages in between pregnancy and waving your child off at the gates of primary school, while facing hurdles such as white privilege, racial micro-aggression and unconscious bias at every point. candice does so with her trademark sense of humour and refreshing straight-talking, and the result is a call-to-arms that will allow mums like her to take control, scrapping the parenting rulebook to mother their own way.

As a first time mum I found this book really useful however I can imagine if you already have a child it might not be such a great buy. I didn't find it patronising either as I've read in other reviews.marie9414
