What an epic book “The Greeks” by Roderick Beaton turned out to be! I picked it up on the appeal of the cover and a reflection of late that my history lessons at school were decidedly selective and predominantly focused on what the English did and didn’t do. The Greeks, having had a massive impact on religion, culture and language, piqued my interest. Beginning right at the beginning may seem logical but is often not the way of historical books and I so appreciated the context set in this one. The formation of what is now seen as “Greek”, it’s influences and why it came about are given an unbiased account. Equally I liked how the writer, at times, admits we don’t know before offering the current theories. Despite being considered by some a dry topic, I found this book scintillating especially when it covered elements of how our language today was formed and elaborated on global happenings which I was unaware of. Each chapter is a chunk of time, an era for the Greeks, unpacked whilst still keeping the holistic thread. It makes them long so I found setting time to finish each section in one go helped me follow the history especially with all the unfamiliar names and places. The book doesn’t focus on the Greece of today or the land it now covers but the history of the Greek-speaking people and where they have been and are now. It goes right through to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the refugee crisis. Better understanding the past has helped me comprehend the complexity of the those seeking asylum in Greece and why accepting the volume arriving is so challenging. As it is the Greeks, the book is made up of artistic reflection and war strategy, massive upheaval and beautiful poetry. The contrasts are amazing and interesting, I am most grateful I read this one and if you enjoy a well-told historical overview with nuggets of interesting facts tucked in this is one for you! This is a gorgeous book from National Geographic that covers so much more than just the history of ancient Greece. It is really a cultural exploration of all of the aspects of the ancient Greeks that made them so famous that we still read about them today. The book is written for everyone in the family, not just children and not just adults. It is also a nice gift because it's so elegant. It's a little small for a coffee table book but it is a very pretty hardback. This is written as a companion to the three-part series called The Greeks shown in 2016 on PBS.heyitsminebub
A quality publication by National Geographic,full of magnificent colour photographs, and has been produced as a companion to the DVD of the same name. It is not, however a deep history of the Greeks, and those wishing for a more intense understanding of the Greeks should look elsewhere. This was somewhat disappointing, considering the publishers pedigree, but it does provide an overview of Greece from it`s earliest developments through to modern times, and therefor act as a springboard for further study.

I am certainly not a Classical scholar yet I found Mythos surprisingly easy and enjoyable to read even though I will always struggle to remember many of the names of the Ancient Gods and lesser deities involved. This is a very interesting book, though not as wonderful as I had anticipated considering Fox's previous works (especially the brilliant "Alexander the Great"). It is still compelling and highly readable, though his thematic treatment of the topic does feel highly episodic, and the short length of the chapters, though making for easy reading, does make you cry out for a strong, relentless narrative at times. Still highly recommended, just not quite up to his usual standards.
This book is an excellent starting point for any student taking Classes on Ancient Greece or Rome, or anyone who wants to learn about them. It's well-written and well organised, its easy to read and the information is very easy to find, and there is a lot of information packed into it. As a student of both Greece and Rome I have used this book constantly throughout my Classics degree. It covers a huge range of topics whilst still managing to retain depth in each topic, and sure beats carrying around two seperate books instead.Brydee Penlain

This is a very interesting book, though not as wonderful as I had anticipated considering Fox's previous works (especially the brilliant "Alexander the Great"). It is still compelling and highly readable, though his thematic treatment of the topic does feel highly episodic, and the short length of the chapters, though making for easy reading, does make you cry out for a strong, relentless narrative at times. Still highly recommended, just not quite up to his usual standards.
This book is an excellent starting point for any student taking Classes on Ancient Greece or Rome, or anyone who wants to learn about them. It's well-written and well organised, its easy to read and the information is very easy to find, and there is a lot of information packed into it. As a student of both Greece and Rome I have used this book constantly throughout my Classics degree. It covers a huge range of topics whilst still managing to retain depth in each topic, and sure beats carrying around two seperate books instead.Brydee Penlain

The empire of trebizond or the trapezuntine empire was a monarchy that flourished during the 13th through 15th centuries, comprising the far northeastern corner of anatolia and the southern crimea. original formed during a revolt against the usurpation of the imperial throne by the grandsons of emperor andronikos i komneos, trebizond (current trabzon, turkey, with which the name of the empire is a cognate) became a byzantine greek successor state established after the fall of the earner roman empire (byzantine) in the fourth crusade, along with the empire of nicaea and the despotate of epirus. the emperors of trebizond pressed their claim on the imperial throne for decades after the nicaean reconquest of constantinople in 1261. the trapezuntine monarchy survived the longest of the byzantine successor states. the despotate of epirus was slowly decimated, and briefly occupied by the restored byzantine empire c.1340, thereafter becoming a serbian dependency and later inherited by italians, ultimately falling to the ottoman empire in 1479, having long ceased to contest the byzantine throne. while the empire of nicaea had become the resurrected byzantine empire, it came to an end in 1453 with the conquest of constantinople by the ottoman empire. the empire of trebizond continued until 1461 when the ottoman sultan mehmed ii conquered it after a month-long siege and took its ruler and his family into captivity. the crimean principality of theodoro, an offshoot of trebizond, lasted another 14 years, falling to the ottomans in 1475.
