5. I'm Glad My Mom Died (Hardcover) Simon & Schuster

Product Details:
Jennette mccurdy details how she overcame harrowing struggles as a child tv star—including anorexia and bulimia, addiction, severe obsessive-compulsive disorder and a traumatic relationship with her mother. a heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by icarly and sam & cat star jennette mccurdy about her struggles as a former child actor—including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother—and how she retook control of her life. jennette mccurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. so she went along with what mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. she endured extensive at-home makeovers while mom chided, “your eyelashes are invisible, okay? you think dakota fanning doesn’t tint hers?” she was even showered by mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. in i’m glad my mom died, jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail—just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. cast in a new nickelodeon series called icarly, she is thrust into fame. though mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (“hi gale!”), jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships. these issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the icarly spinoff sam & cat alongside ariana grande, her mother dies of cancer. finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants. told with refreshing candor and dark humor, i’m glad my mom died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.
Reviews:
The story of the struggle for success in Hollywood, particularly that of a reluctant child and an obsessed stage mother is well-worn territory. So what made this worth reading? Ms. McCurdy spent several years as a Nickleodean star in the early 2000s, even dabbling in a recording career. What makes this so compelling is her ability and willingness to share painful and unique details of her life, as well as that of her families' struggles, and how she was manipulated by her Mother and other adults at the network. She draws you in with a competing conversational style, and doesn't hold back on anything. By the end of the book, the reader is left feeling both moved and pleased with her decisions and intelligence in deciding to move beyond the grief left behind by her experiences. I was drawn from page to page and finished it in one sitting. I'll probably reread it more slowly, to be able to contemplate her unsparing exposition of the path she took to reach this point in her life. I wish her well. Buy it!fisheye

14. For White Folks Who Teach In The Hood… And The Rest Of Y'all Too: Reality Pedagogy And Urban Education [Book]

Product Details:
A new york times best seller – merging real stories with theory, research, and practice, a prominent scholar offers a new approach to teaching and learning for every stakeholder in urban education. – drawing on his own experience of feeling undervalued and invisible in classrooms as a young man of color and merging his experiences with more than a decade of teaching and researching in urban america, award-winning educator christopher emdin offers a new lens on an approach to teaching and learning in urban schools. for white folks who teach in the hood…and the rest of y’all too is the much-needed antidote to traditional top-down pedagogy and promises to radically reframe the landscape of urban education for the better. – he begins by taking to task the perception of urban youth of color as unteachable, and he challenges educators to embrace and respect each student’s culture and to reimagine the classroom as a site where roles are reversed and students become the experts in their own learning. – putting forth his theory of reality pedagogy, emdin provides practical tools to unleash the brilliance and eagerness of youth and educators alike—both of whom have been typecast and stymied by outdated modes of thinking about urban education. with this fresh and engaging new pedagogical vision, emdin demonstrates the importance of creating a family structure and building communities within the classroom, using culturally relevant strategies like hip-hop music and call-and-response, and connecting the experiences of urban youth to indigenous populations globally. merging real stories with theory, research, and practice, emdin demonstrates how by implementing the “seven c’s” of reality pedagogy in their own classrooms, urban youth of color benefit from truly transformative education. – for white folks who teach in the hood…and the rest of y'all too has been featured in mother jones, education week, weekend all things considered with michel martin, diverse: issues in higher education, pbs news hour, slate, the washington post, scholastic administrator magazine, essence magazine, salon, color – lines, ebony, huffington post education

Great read for anyone working in the urban public school system!drdesmond7
The Book is filled with racial stereotypes of white people. Does not help anyone become a better teacher. Seems the author is intent on telling his own story, maybe he needs to get published to get tenure. Seems to me he hasn't been in an inner city High School classroom in a very long time. This book is a waste of time and money.porthurontennis

New york times best seller from the author that brought you 6 new york times best-selling books including the harbinger, the book of mysteries, the oracle and the harbinger ii is it possible that behind what is taking place in america and the world lies a mystery that goes back to the gods of the ancient world…and that they now have returned? the return of the gods is the most explosive book jonathan cahn has ever written. it is so explosive and so revealing that no description here could do it justice. jonathan cahn is known for revealing the stunning mysteries, many from ancient times, that lie behind and are playing out in the events of our times. but with the return of the gods, cahn takes this to an entirely new level and dimension. the return of the gods, cahn takes the reader on a journey from an ancient parable, the ancient inscriptions in sumer, assyria, and babylonia that become the puzzle pieces behind what is taking place in our world to this day, specifically in america. the mystery involves the gods. who are they? what are they? and is it possible that these beings, whose origins are from ancient times, are the unseen catalysts of modern culture? is it possible that these gods lie behind the most pivotal events, forces, and movements taking place in our nation and around the world at this very moment? are the gods at this very moment transforming our culture, our children, our lives, and america itself? could this mystery have even determined the exact days on which supreme court decisions had to be handed down? what is the dark trinity? who is the possessor? the enchanter? the destroyer? and the sorceress? could a sign that has appeared all over america and the world be linked to the gods of mesopotamia? and if so, what does it actually mean? could the gods have returned to new york city and an ancient mythology played out on the streets in real time? is it possible that the gods lie behind everything from what appears on our computer monitors, our televisions and movie screens; to the lessons given in our classrooms; to the breakdown of the family; to wokism; to the occult; to our addictions; to the supreme court; to cancel culture; to children''s cartoons; to every force and factor that has transformed the parameters of gender; to that which appears in our stores, on our t-shirts, and on our coffee mugs–to that which is, at this very moment, transforming america and much of the world? is it possible that behind all these things are ancient mysteries that go back to the middle east and ancient mesopotamia? is it possible that the gods are even affecting your life right now? how can you recognize it? and what can you do about it? the return of the gods is not only one of the most explosive books you''ll ever read but also one of the most profound. it will reveal the most stunning secrets and truths behind what is happening before your eyes in america and the nations. you will see things, even in your world, in a whole new light. with such chapters as "the house of spirits," "the avatar," "the masters," "the deep magic," and "the day of the goddess," the return of the gods will take readers on a fascinating, unforgettable, and mind-blowing journey that will leave them stunned and with the ability to see the world as they never have before. be prepared to be blown away as you open up jonathan cahn''s most explosive book ever, the return of the gods!
Reviews:
This is another great book by Rabbi Cahn and as always, his research is impeccable. Some may read this book and consider it a stretch to associate ancient Israel to America today. To me it was not a stretch at all. One need only listen to the news for a day to see that we are indeed watching the return of the gods. I consider this book to be a valuable resource for what is yet to come. Watch, learn and be prepared.AnnC
I have read several of Jonathan Cahn's books and have always enjoyed them. They are intriguing and very thought provoking. This one is essential reading as it explains why things are happening as they are in today's world. It's easy to read but full of information, well researched and will give you lots to think about.Molly
I could not put this book down! It explains the exponential rate of the downward spiral of our nation and the spirits who are behind it. This is the exposing of the gods "behind the curtain." Through the reading of "The Return of the Gods," I have gained a higher level of understanding of what has really been going on behind the scenes so I can better process all of the destruction I have seen in our land. This book has helped me tremendously and I would highly recommend it to others who are trying to make sense of the lunacy they have witnessed over the past several years.Margaret

I think so far its helped me a lot and also some other of his books can help you realize your mistakes and fix them. Always trust in god for Satan has his ways to manipulate you and some of them are: he starts with fear, then anxiety which leads to depression then anger combined with stress Satan likes to see us suffer and worry and be unfaithful and sin. I advise you to watch what you say for when you say some things he learns how to defeat you. don't just say anything out loud for before you say it he knows nothing and once you say it he knows how to defeat you. Hopefully PPL get this message and follow it. IM still a teenager and i encourage you to know god when you are still you for if you have God you have everything.AN
