its in good conditionamipatha-27
I have this book for my class and found it to be very dense. I have to read the chapter 4-5 times before I can understand just the basics. Compared to another book I used, University Physics, I felt that this book lacked a certain dimension making it difficult for students to learn. There is no chapter summary, which would have helped a lot.ccro

7. Special Relativity: For The Enthusiastic Beginner [Book]
Product Details:
This book is written for high school and college students learning about special relativity for the first time. it will appeal to the reader who has a healthy level of enthusiasm for understanding how and why the various results of special relativity come about. all of the standard introductory topics in special relativity are covered: historical motivation, loss of simultaneity, time dilation, length contraction, velocity addition, lorentz transformations, minkowski diagrams, causality, doppler effect, energy/momentum, collisions/decays, force, and 4-vectors. additionally, the last chapter provides a brief introduction to the basic ideas of general relativity, including the equivalence principle, gravitational time dilation, and accelerating reference frames. the book features more than 100 worked-out problems in the form of examples in the text and solved problems at the end of each chapter. these problems, along with the discussions in the text, will be a valuable resource in any course on special relativity. the numerous examples also make this book ideal for self-study. very little physics background is assumed (essentially none in the first half of the book). an intriguing aspect of special relativity is that it is challenging due to its inherent strangeness, as opposed to a heavy set of physics prerequisites. likewise for the math prerequisite: calculus is used on a few occasions, but it is not essential to the overall flow of the book.

9. What Is Real?: The Unfinished Quest For The Meaning Of Quantum Physics [Book]
Product Details:
"quantum mechanics is humanity's finest scientific achievement. it explains why the sun shines and how your eyes can see. it's the theory behind the leds in your phone and the nuclear hearts of space probes. every physicist agrees quantum physics is spectacularly successful. but ask them what quantum physics means, and the result will be a brawl. at stake is the nature of the universe itself. what does it mean for something to be real? what is the role of consciousness in the universe? and do quantum rules apply to very small objects like electrons and protons, but not us? in what is real?, adam becker brings to vivid life the brave researchers whose quest for the truth led them to challenge bohr: david bohm, who picked up einstein's mantle and sought to make quantum mechanics deterministic, all while being hounded by the forces of mccarthyism; hugh everett, who argued that everything, big and small, must be governed by the same rules; and john bell, who went to great lengths to eradicate the power of the god-like observer from the core of quantum physics. and they paid dearly, their reputations, careers, and sometimes lives ruined completely. but history has been kinder to them than their contemporaries were. as becker shows, the brave intellectual giants have inspired a growing army of physicists and philosophers intent both on making a philosophically more satisfying theory of the universe and a more useful one as well. a gripping story of some of humanity's greatest ideas and the high cost with which many have pursued them, what is real? is intellectual history at its passionate best"–

This book offers a very good historical review of quantum reality and does so quickly and concisely.eprtheorem
The most insightful work on Quantum Foundations yet. The author has done his research and told the history with brutal honesty and deep insight. Some Physicists feel that our lack of understanding of the phenomena themselves is not a problem. That is a matter of opinion. What is not an opinion is that we have not been able to explain what the subatomic entities are or how they can behave in such strange ways. This book really takes an honest aim at our inadequacies in attempting to explain these foundational questions.paulpinelle

11. The Trouble With Physics: The Rise Of String Theory, The Fall Of A Science, And What Comes Next [Book]
Product Details:
In this illuminating book, the renowned theoretical physicist lee smolin argues that fundamental physics — the search for the laws of nature — is losing its way. smolin offers an unblinking assessment of string theory and encourages a new direction for where the next big idea may lead. ambitious ideas about extra dimensions, exotic particles, multiple universes, and strings have captured the public's imagination — and the imagination of experts. but these ideas have not been tested experimentally, and some, like string theory, seem to offer no possibility of being tested. yet these speculations dominate the field — attracting the best talent and much of the funding. modern science has created a climate in which emerging physicists are often penalized for pursuing less popular avenues. as smolin points out, the situation threatens to impede the very progress of science. with clarity, passion, and authority, smolin charts the rise and fall of string theory and takes a fascinating look at what will replace it. smolin not only tells us who and what to watch for in the coming years, he offers novel solutions for seeking out and nurturing the best new talent — giving us a chance, at long last, of finding the next einstein.
Reviews:
Fascinating read for a non academic.tallships28
This is the book about modern physics that I have been waiting for. Lee Smolin published in the field of string theory for many years and has written this book that explains the problems with it and modern physics in general. Understanding the book requires an understanding of basic physics. There is no math but every problem is explained in detail. He compares the types of problems that modern physicists are experiencing with the problems that previous generations of physicists had with their own discoveries. By analogy, the problems are similar. He is thus implying that there are major problems with string theory and also with the direction modern physics is heading. I found the book very informative and very well written.edwardkrivoniak

Product Details:
A world-class physicist and a citizen scientist combine forces to teach physics 101–the diy way the theoretical minimum is a book for anyone who has ever regretted not taking physics in college–or who simply wants to know how to think like a physicist. in this unconventional introduction, physicist leonard susskind and hacker-scientist george hrabovsky offer a first course in physics and associated math for the ardent amateur. unlike most popular physics books–which give readers a taste of what physicists know but shy away from equations or math–susskind and hrabovsky actually teach the skills you need to do physics, beginning with classical mechanics, yourself. based on susskind's enormously popular stanford university-based (and youtube-featured) continuing-education course, the authors cover the minimum–the theoretical minimum of the title–that readers need to master to study more advanced topics. an alternative to the conventional go-to-college method, the theoretical minimum provides a tool kit for amateur scientists to learn physics at their own pace.
