I replaced the anode on a 3 year old AO Smith power vent water heater( a pretty expensive unit). I have a private well and use a water softener and my hot water had become very smelly with what I think was Hydrogen Sulfide gas. Cold water has no odor. The smell kept getting worse. Flushing the water heater out would only offer short term relief so after doing some research I decided to switch to a powered anode. The effect was immediate, no more smell. I have only had it installed for about three weeks but it is working wonderfully. The only problem is that it was a little difficult to remove the old anode. This eliminated all sulfur smell almost immediately. I had extreme difficulty in removing original rod on a newer state water heater. Never did get it out. After checking with Corro-protect customer service to see if new rod would work with existing magnesium still in place. I installed new rod in a different spot. Removed t/p valve and installed it there. Installed new, longer correct rating t/p valve in tee at hot water outlet.

Allow water to run until all air is forced from water lines, then close the faucets. Water heater should now be full, (9) Examine the RV Anode Rod for leaks and tighten if necessary. Camco recommends inspecting your anode rod monthly. Over time, minerals can build up around the drain plug opening making removal of your anode rod difficult, and frequent inspection will help prevent this. For maximum performance, replace your RV Anode Rod when less than one half of the rod remains.

I know it's time to replace when temperature recovery slows. 7/8" socket, 6 inch extension and a 24 inch breaker bar make easy replacement. Be sure to power flush the magnesium hydroxide/carbonate gel from the heater. There will be a lot of it in the heater, this takes space, reducing the capacity. Just replaced my hot water heater and bought this to hopefully extend the tank life. A little tape on the threads and it goes right in. I hate the way Atwood has the gas line running right across the front of the drain so you can't get a tool in there without a hassle, but that is not the fault of the anode rod. I've used these in the past and based on the degradation on the rod, they certainly do their job. Just remember to check it, it does get used up.Bubba

Arrived quickly, in sturdy cardboard tube, and fit the tank as expected. Although this rod is the replacement part number recommended in my water heater manual, I was surprised to find that the original rod in the tank was longer and had to be cut to remove it due to ceiling clearance. If this happens to you too: lift old rod part way, clamp vise grip on rod near tank, tape around rod to prevent debris from falling into tank, use hacksaw to cut above the vise grips, clear debris, lift remaining partial rod using vise grips, being extra careful not to drop partial rod into tank. I used a 1 1/16" impact socket with an impact driver to loosen the old rod, but used a socket wrench to manually tighten the new rod to make sure I didn't over tighten.Piper

Perfect fit for our 17 year old Lowe's Whirlpool 30 gal. electric water heater. The diameter of this anode rod is thicker/larger than some others I've researched, which is great because it will last a little longer. The old rod in my water heater was totaled…calcified, and eaten away. Taking the old anode rod off was easy with an impact gun and 1 1/16" socket, which is standard for all anode rods. It is NOT necessary to use the impact gun to tighten the new rod. I used a socket wrench and tightened it by hand, be sure it's tight! If you think you can flush out the accumulated cr_p at the bottom of the tank by removing the top or bottom covers, you can't. Just wanted to save you some time if you were thinking of doing this. The only way to flush it out completely, is via the drain plug at the bottom of the tank. Our heater had a lot of what looked like chunks of calcium…big chunks…at the bottom, because I had never changed the anode rod. Luckily, blasts of water from the hose were able to break the chunks up and our heater is now beautifully clean. The best way is to completely drain the tank, and unhook it so you can take it outside. The reason for this is so that you can move the tank around (to swirl the accumulated debris towards the drain). When you're done with this, it's a good idea to also replace the nipples, the T&P valve, and the heating elements (purchase heating elements with the same voltage and wattage). You can find all the supplies you need for this particular water heater on Home Essentials Direct. I don't believe in buying a new water heater or anything for that matter, if the current one is working fine. They don't make things to last anymore, but this particular water heater is glass lined, and I guess that's why it continues to work, and work well. Regular maintenance is the key. Good luck.S.S.
