Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi (an American Buddhist monk) illuminates the Dharma to westerners. We can be grateful for his many Dharma efforts.plentyzero
First of all, you don't need to be buddhist to gain something from this book. Second, there are a few parts near the end that deal with monastic life (monks) but as stated in the book can mostly be applied to the average life. I didn't start with texts like this. I started straight with the Pali Suttas no problem. I was purchasing the english translations from Target and decided to grab this book to read when I have short free periods. I wouldn't let reading the suttas straight-up scare you if you intend to study buddhism but for new folks potentially interested in buddhism and older alike, this is a great book. Each section is has it's own introduction. The introduction gives some background/explanation of the suttas that will follow in the pages to follow as well as Bhikku Bodhi's own insight on the matters when applicable. I mention "Morality" in my headline title. How can you have social or communal harmony without morality? You can't. From newcomers to buddhism the things I see most often are questions such as "how do I deal with X in life?", "how do I respond when [name] does Y to me?", "how do I handle this feeling?" and alike. Those are properly addressed without having to dig through the massive sutta collections to find what you're looking for. It has a special section on anger in itself which makes sense as it's one of the easiest emotions to give way to and can cause the most problems. Not just crazy anger however, even subtle. It's a good read for what you pay, especially for those just wanting to get an idea of some buddhist ideals and not focusing on meditation or alike. This book truly focuses on what it's title implies. Best Wishes.JA

Reviews:
Bhikkhu Bodhi does an excellent job of bringing the Suttas to life. The world-reknowned Buddhist Scholar-monk has produced an anthology of discourses from the Sutta Pitaka, arranged by a framework he has devised, which introduces the Suttas from a 'happiness in the here and now' right through to the ultimate happiness of Nibbana. There is an excellent introduction to the text, where you get a good idea of Bodhi's reasons for compiling this text, the framework of the text and also his suggestions on how one should go about reading it. In the introduction is a detailed account of the history of the Pali Canon, and why it is so important. The beginning of each chapter also is marked by an introduction by Bodhi which further outlines the importance of each Sutta and how should go about interpreting it. As with any of Bhikkhu Bodhi's works, there are abundant notes to accompany any passages one might have trouble interpreting, although it must be mentioned that some of the notes will only appeal to those with a scholarly bent. My personal opinion is that this text is well suited to anyone who has been introduced to Buddhism and is looking for a deeper knowledge and understanding of what the Buddha actually taught. It's also great for anyone who already has a good understanding of the Buddha's message and is looking to deepen their understanding. Venerable Bhikkhu Bodhi mentions in his introduction that he hopes that reading this book will spur on the latter group of readers to 'take the plunge' into the Sutta Pitaka proper, and that's certainly something I now intend to do. So thank you Venerable Bhikkhu Bodhi, for all your hard work.

11. The Numerical Discourses Of The Buddha: A Complete Translation Of The Anguttara Nikaya [Book]
Product Details:
Discover with the original teachings of the buddha in this thorough translation of some of the oldest buddhist texts in the world. like the river ganges flowing down from the himalayas, the entire buddhist tradition flows down to us from the teachings and deeds of the historical buddha, who lived and taught in india during the fifth century b.c.e. to ensure that his legacy would survive the ravages of time, his direct disciples compiled records of the buddha's teachings soon after his passing. in the theravada buddhist tradition, which prevails in sri lanka and southeast asia, these records are regarded as the definitive "word of the buddha." preserved in pali, an ancient indian language closely related to the language that the buddha spoke, this full compilation of texts is known as the pali canon. at the heart of the buddha's teaching were the suttas (sanskrit sutras), his discourses and dialogues. the suttas were compiled into collections called "nikayas," of which there are four, each organized according to a different principle. the digha nikaya consists of longer discourses; the majjhima nikaya of middle-length discourses; the samyutta nikaya of thematically connected discourses; and the anguttara nikaya of numerically patterned discourses. the anguttara arranges the buddha's discourses in accordance with a numerical scheme intended to promote retention and easy comprehension. in an age when writing was still in its infancy, this proved to be the most effective way to ensure that the disciples could grasp and replicate the structure of a teaching. here’s what makes the numerical discourses special: insightful commentary from eminent scholar-monk bhikkhu bodhi its comprehensive translation of the anguttara nikaya, part of the pali canon teachings specifically for lay people and families themes including family life, right livelihood, friendship, and meditation techniques laid out in a carefully organized thematic guide in 2013, venerable bhikkhu bodhi was awarded the 2013 khyentse foundation prize for outstanding translation. bhikkhu bodhi’s translation and compilation also includes a useful thematic guide to the anguttara nikaya, so that readers can browse the volume by topic. find the teachings to further your practice and bring clarity to your life today by diving into this rich treasure of the buddhist literary tradition. with this volume, readers can learn about the life of the buddha, instructions for maintaining a harmonious household, monastic practice and lifestyle, meditation practice, and the sangha (buddhist community).

13. The Buddhist Psychology Of Awakening: An In-Depth Guide To Abhidharma [Book]
Product Details:
"from the introduction: it was written primarily for those who have or might develop an interest in the very basic buddhist teachings associated with what tibetan traditions call the "first turning" of the wheel of the dharma. here is grouped teachings on proper conduct (vinaya) and discourses (sutras) and commentaries (shastras) on basic teachings which came to be gathered together under the rubric of higher dharma (abhidharma). the teachings on higher dharma have, to date, are, for the most part, rather technical, consisting of main points and enumerated lists of basic factors (dharmas) of phenomena mentioned in the buddha sutras. there is a rich codification of such teachings preserved in the pali language, and thereafter in the theravadin abhidhamma literature. in addition, there are a different set of texts used by the living traditions associated with indo-tibetan buddhist lineages, preserved in sanskrit (and, also in translation into tibetan, chinese and mongolian languages). it is the indo-tibetan traditions which are explored in this book. i have chosen to give an account, an approach which strives to bring out a lively, relevant and novel way to apply some of the key approaches of the higher dharma to a contemporary non-specialist readership"–

This book is exactly what I need right now. If you're interested in "twin flames" also known as "telophilia" in kundalini; Then this book is for you! Though the terms used may not be exactly the same, you will see that at the end names are not at all as important as the meaning. It applies to any ideas previously given to you – whether it be twin flames, soul relationship, soul recognition, telophilia, and in most recent/modern term "limerence"… It tells us how to deal with the overwhelming waves of emotions that are usually wasted by unproductive actions/vices. There is so much to learn here…peatear42
15. The Buddha's Teachings As Philosophy [Book]
Product Details:
A shorter and less technical treatment of its subject than the author's acclaimed buddhism as philosophy (second edition, hackett, 2021), mark siderits's the buddha's teachings as philosophy explores three different systems of thought that arose from core claims of the buddha. by detailing and critically examining key arguments made by the buddha and developed by later buddhist philosophers, siderits investigates the buddha's teachings as philosophy: a set of claims–in this case, claims about the nature of the world and our place in it–supported by rational argumentation and, here, developed with a variety of systematic results. the buddha's teachings as philosophy will be especially useful to students of philosophy, religious studies, and comparative religion–to anyone, in fact, encountering buddhist philosophy for the first time.
