4. The Cambridge Concise History Of Astronomy [Book]
Product Details:
Astronomy is one of the oldest sciences, and one which has repeatedly led to fundamental changes in our view of the world. this book covers the history of our study of the cosmos from prehistory to a survey of modern astronomy and astrophysics. it does not attempt to cover everything, but deliberately concentrates on the important themes and topics, including stellar astronomy in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries–the source of many important concepts in modern astronomy–and the copernican revolution, which led to the challenge of ancient authorities in many areas other than astronomy. this is an essential text for students of the history of science and for students of astronomy who require a historical background to their studies.
Reviews:
Hans
5. Principles Of Astrophysics: Using Gravity And Stellar Physics To Explore The Cosmos [Book]
Product Details:
Provides a physics-centered analysis of a broad range of astronomical systems that appeals to a large audience of advanced undergraduate students in physics and engineeringthis book gives a survey of astrophysics at the advanced undergraduate level. it originates from a two-semester course sequence at rutgers university that is meant to appeal not only to astrophysics students but also more broadly to physics and engineering students. the organization is driven more by physics than by astronomy; in other words, topics are first developed in physics and then applied to astronomical systems that can be investigated, rather than the other way around. the first half of the book focuses on gravity. gravity is the dominant force in many astronomical systems, so a tremendous amount can be learned by studying gravity, motion and mass. the theme in this part of the book, as well as throughout astrophysics, is using motion to investigate mass. the goal of chapters 2-11 is to develop a progressively richer understanding of gravity as it applies to objects ranging from planets and moons to galaxies and the universe as a whole. the second half uses other aspects of physics to address one of the big questions. the goal of chapters 12-20 is to understand the physics behind the remarkable story of how the universe, earth and life were formed. this book assumes familiarity with vector calculus and introductory physics (mechanics, electromagnetism, gas physics and atomic physics); however, all of the physics topics are reviewed as they come up (and vital aspects of vector calculus are reviewed in the appendix).
6. Cosmology: The Science Of The Universe [Book]
Product Details:
Cosmology: the science of the universe is a broad introduction to the science of modern cosmology, with emphasis on its historical origins. the first edition of this best-selling book received worldwide acclaim for its lucid style and wide-ranging exploration of the universe. this eagerly awaited second edition updates and greatly extends the first with seven new chapters that explore early scientific cosmology, cartesian and newtonian world systems, cosmology after newton and before einstein, special relativity, observational cosmology, inflation and creation of the universe. all chapters conclude with a section entitled reflections containing provocative topics that will foster lively debate. the new projects section, also at the end of each chapter, raises questions and issues to challenge the reader.

9. Endless Universe: Beyond The Big Bang [Book]
Product Details:
Two world-renowned scientists present an audacious new vision of the cosmos that “steals the thunder from the big bang theory.” —wall street journalthe big bang theory—widely regarded as the leading explanation for the origin of the universe—posits that space and time sprang into being about 14 billion years ago in a hot, expanding fireball of nearly infinite density. over the last three decades the theory has been repeatedly revised to address such issues as how galaxies and stars first formed and why the expansion of the universe is speeding up today. furthermore, an explanation has yet to be found for what caused the big bang in the first place.in endless universe, paul j. steinhardt and neil turok, both distinguished theoretical physicists, present a bold new cosmology. they recount the remarkable developments in astronomy, particle physics, and superstring theory that form the basis for their groundbreaking “cyclic universe” theory. according to this theory, the big bang was not the beginning of time but the bridge to a past filled with endlessly repeating cycles of evolution, each accompanied by the creation of new matter and the formation of new galaxies, stars, and planets.endless universe provides answers to longstanding problems with the big bang model, while offering a provocative new view of both the past and the future of the cosmos. it is a “theory that could solve the cosmic mystery” (usa today).

12. Accessory To War: The Unspoken Alliance Between Astrophysics And The Military [Book]
Product Details:
New york times bestseller an exploration of the age-old complicity between skywatchers and warfighters, from the best-selling author of astrophysics for people in a hurry. in this fascinating foray into the centuries-old relationship between science and military power, acclaimed astrophysicist neil degrasse tyson and writer-researcher avis lang examine how the methods and tools of astrophysics have been enlisted in the service of war. "the overlap is strong, and the knowledge flows in both directions," say the authors, because astrophysicists and military planners care about many of the same things: multi-spectral detection, ranging, tracking, imaging, high ground, nuclear fusion, and access to space. tyson and lang call it a "curiously complicit" alliance. "the universe is both the ultimate frontier and the highest of high grounds," they write. "shared by both space scientists and space warriors, it’s a laboratory for one and a battlefield for the other. the explorer wants to understand it; the soldier wants to dominate it. but without the right technology—which is more or less the same technology for both parties—nobody can get to it, operate in it, scrutinize it, dominate it, or use it to their advantage and someone else’s disadvantage." spanning early celestial navigation to satellite-enabled warfare, accessory to war is a richly researched and provocative examination of the intersection of science, technology, industry, and power that will introduce tyson’s millions of fans to yet another dimension of how the universe has shaped our lives and our world.

In this refreshingly clear book, brian greene, a leading string theorist, relates the scientific story and the human struggle behind the search for the ultimate theory. string theory, as the author vividly describes, reveals a vision of the universe that is sending shock waves through the world of physics. thrilling and revolutionary ideas such as new dimensions hidden within the fabric of space, black holes transmuting into elementary particles, rips and punctures in the space-time continuum, gigantic universes interchangeable with minuscule ones, and a wealth of others are playing a pivotal role as physicists use string theory to grapple with some of the deepest questions of the ages. with authority and grace, the elegant universe introduces us to the discoveries and the remaining mysteries, the exhilaration and the frustrations of those who relentlessly probe the ultimate nature of space, time, and matter.
Reviews:
This book was for my son. He loves it, so I guess it is a wonderful book.Sara
I have read many books on relativity, quantum mechanics and string theory, but never have I read a book about all three of these subjects, at least, not until this book. The first part of the book deals with relativity and has some of the best explanations I have ever read. In the shorter middle section, quantum mechanics is discussed and gives a good but not too lengthy description of its weirdness. The third section merges these two theories together in what could turn out to be the grand theory; strings. Unless you know something of these theories, you can't begin to appreciate the grandness of the universe. This book tells it all, and, by the way, with no math!scottgull

14. The Privileged Planet: How Our Place In The Cosmos Is Designed For Discovery [Book]
Product Details:
Earth. the final frontier contrary to popular belief, earth is not an insignificant blip on the universe’s radar. our world proves anything but average in guillermo gonzalez and jay w. but what exactly does earth bring to the table? how does it prove its worth among numerous planets and constellations in the vastness of the milky way? in the privileged planet, you’ll learn about the world’s life-sustaining capabilities, water and its miraculous makeup, protection by the planetary giants, and how our planet came into existence in the first place.
Reviews:
Although this book is a bit dated now, it was carefully researched and incredibly well annotated. While I'm not associated with any organized religion, this book certainly gives cause for thought about how well positioned is the earth and solar system to learn about celestial physics. The gist of this book is that there is a very high likelihood that there was intelligence in the creation and placement of our solar system. As an engineer [MSEE] I'm pretty much a skeptic, but the tenets of this book are hard to refute. Since this book was written, the exoplanet discoveries have shown us that the assumption that our solar system is a typical example is incorrect… strengthening the author's arguments for intelligent design. A fascinating and thought provoking read.terryatsbe
Full of questions that the evolutionary textbooks convieniently (and always)ignore. The most common ideas are "How could a planet and universe so complex, with so many interdependent systems, all essential to life at the same time, have developed by chance when the ommission or weakness of just one system would be fatal?" and "How is it that man seems to be so perfectly positioned for discovery?" When the DETAILS are examined, planetary/astrophysical evolution starts to look ridiculous. This series is delightful, awe inspiring, and even shocking. Yet it doesn't mention a god, just the facts. Ah, if only every student could just be exposed to the other side of the story. With all we know today, no one could continue believing the evolution fairy tail, (except of course those educators who would lose their jobs if they gave up on it).2003_ub313

17. Mapping The Heavens: The Radical Scientific Ideas That Reveal The Cosmos [Book]
Product Details:
If you want to understand the greatest ideas that shaped our current cosmic cartography, read this book."–adam g. riess, nobel laureate in physics, 2011 this book provides a tour of the "greatest hits" of cosmological discoveries–the ideas that reshaped our universe over the past century. the cosmos, once understood as a stagnant place, filled with the ordinary, is now a universe that is expanding at an accelerating pace, propelled by dark energy and structured by dark matter. priyamvada natarajan, our guide to these ideas, is someone at the forefront of the research–an astrophysicist who literally creates maps of invisible matter in the universe. she not only explains for a wide audience the science behind these essential ideas but also provides an understanding of how radical scientific theories gain acceptance. the formation and growth of black holes, dark matter halos, the accelerating expansion of the universe, the echo of the big bang, the discovery of exoplanets, and the possibility of other universes–these are some of the puzzling cosmological topics of the early twenty-first century. natarajan discusses why the acceptance of new ideas about the universe and our place in it has never been linear and always contested even within the scientific community.

18. The History Of Astronomy And Astrophysics: A Biographical Approach [Book]
Product Details:
The history of astronomy and astrophysics ranges from antiquity to the landing of spacecraft on the moon, mars, venus, and even an asteroid. since early times, human beings have sought to understand what they see in the sky. the invention of the telescope opened new avenues of observation and research. speculation about life on the moon and other planets became a hot topic, and theories about the evolution of the universe were developed. new investigative tools, such as spectrometry and photometry, were used to determine spectral characteristics and brightness of cosmological objects. then scientists began to detect electromagnetic radiation other than visible light from the sky, such as infrared, ultraviolet, and x-rays. this book approaches the history of astronomy and astrophysics from a biographical point of view, considering people to be more interesting than things, and the combination of the two more interesting than the sum of the individual parts. after a brief overview of classical astronomy and modern astrophysics, 293 one-page biographies of individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of astronomy and astrophysics are presented.

19. The Discovery Of The Universe: A History Of Astronomy And Observatories [Book]
Product Details:
Like time machines, observatories reveal distant objects as they once existed, almost too far away to imagine. they are our portals to the universe, to let us understand how it began and how it works. this book charts the progress of astronomy through the observatories used throughout history, from the earliest such as stonehenge to places like birr castle with its leviathan telescope used by herschel, places where the secrets of the universe were first unlocked by science. carolyn collins petersen then describes instruments now in use around the planet. these technological marvels range from the mauna kea observatories in hawaii to the south pole telescope in antarctica that hunts for the faint emission of the cosmic microwave background (cmb). in addition, astronomers today use an array of orbiting observatories – the most famous being hubble of course – and launching in the near future will be the james webb space telescope. ground-based observatories can now attain near 'hubble' standards of accuracy, despite peering into space through our atmosphere. astronomers can now routinely look across the cosmos at objects that existed at nearly the beginning of time. they have studied distant earth-type planets, delved into stellar birthplaces, examined the minutiae of stellar explosions and galaxy collisions, and searched out the signatures of chemical elements that form the basis of the planets and ourselves. the discovery of the universe looks at the amazing science that has been done using the world's suite of observatories. it presents examples of astronomical discoveries made across the widest spectrum as observatories extend humanity's vision across the depths of space and time.
