1. Codependent No More: How To Stop Controlling Others And Start Caring For Yourself [Book]

Product Details:
The #1 bestseller that has helped heal millions of readers, this modern classic holds the key to understanding codependency and unlocking its hold on your life. melody beattie's compassionate and insightful look into codependency–the concept of losing oneself in the name of helping another– has helped millions of readers understand that they are powerless to change anyone but themselves and that caring for the self is where healing begins. is someone else's problem your problem? if, like so many others, you've lost sight of your own life in the drama of tending to a loved one's self-destructive behavior, you may be codependent–and you may find yourself in this book. with instructive life stories, personal reflections, exercises, and self-tests, codependent no more helps you to break old patterns, maintain healthy boundaries, and say no to unhealthy relationships. it offers a clear and achievable path to freedom and a lifetime of healing, hope, and happiness. this ground-breaking book is even more relevant today, as readers confront new, urgent challenges with greater self-awareness, than it was when it first entered the national conversation over 35 years ago.
Reviews:
Great book… if you're having difficulties with personal relationships no matter how hard you try, then chances are you will find this book a real eye opener. If you are getting upset in personal relationships this book is a great SELF help, focusing on Self and Self within a relationship. I liked it was written in a non confrontative manner but also not supporting of black and white thinking (you are great, they are bad or vice versa) and the authour seemed open and honest about her own experiences. The negative of this book is that it is aimed at partners/children/families of alcoholics, and though she does state that its not Just Alcoholics which contribute to this type of disfunction but any addictive behaviours (in the other person) be it workaholic, drug addiction, self absorbed hobbies, personality problems/disorders, emotionally distant/non communicate partners, the book doesn't make it that clear. co-depandant was originally the term for the partner of an alcoholic, but the alcoholic (workaholic, tvaholic, computerholic whatever) is also a co-dependant but rather than using 'good' deeds and trying hard to please others toimprove their self image, the holics simply find a drug/drink/distraction to divert from their own poor self image. There are many 'alcoholics' who have a different 'drug' of choice, and it may be as simple as being 'forgetful' or 'withholding' or 'having to work 80 hours a week to get ahead'. Being partnered to one of these people can be mind bendingly horrible experience… but there's help! Great book! bought for my studies in counsellingtaralafashion
This book came quickly and arrived in good condition and was a very easy read. I read it over a weekend and was surprised how digestible the content was. Codependent No More was insightful in that it made me feel validated in ways I never have before by discussing different personal struggles while giving lists of typical behavior traits people with codependency exhibit and offered exercises to dive into my own experience with codependency. This book does well at not having a pity party and was a bit of a wake up call by discussing cycles of behavior I hadn't realized I participated in for years. It emphasizes an individual's responsibility in becoming (and continuing participation in being) codependent in a relationship and the aspects of closeness and intimacy that codependency ultimately will deprive a relationship of, such as raw honesty (vulnerability), boundaries, reflection, and self-esteem.grga-16
This was a very good book for breaking down how we get from Point A to Point B, or why we act and react the way we do. It explains the influences and nuances of the words and deeds exchanged in our relationships and the effects these have on our minds, bodies and souls. The author has a treasure trove of suggestions for improving, healing and solving problems within yourself and with others. It is written from the perspective of a recovering addict and alcoholic, but the no-nonsense, common sense approach taken by the author can be beneficial to anyone, as long as you can concentrate on finding the parts that apply to you. This book will have you laughing, crying, nodding your head, and maybe even having a revelation or two about yourself and the people in your life. The book can be a bit confusing in that you'll be reading along applying the author's words to your life, then the descriptions start to sound like someone else or seem not to apply to you at all. This book is not intended to be a one-size-fits-all cure. Generically written so it has mass appeal, you will have to remember that not all of the presentations, vignettes, self tests and suggestions will apply. It's up to you to figure that out. Nonetheless, this book is very thought-provoking and is presented in a clear, concise, logical way that seems to leave no stone unturned. It makes you think. Recommended to me by a holistic psychotherapist and life coach, I recommend this book for anyone struggling with an addict/alcoholic, is an addict/alcoholic, views themseles as a victim or as an abuser, or for anyone just struggling in some area of their life. It is a great 'workout' for your mind and spirit, and it may help people not only understand, but make strides to heal, improve and become a better, happier person in mind, body and spirit.ngetek
2. Facing Codependence: What It Is, Where It Comes From, How It Sabotages Our Lives [Book]
Product Details:
Traces the origins of codependency back to childhood, describing a whole range of emotional, spiritual, intellectual, physical, and sexual abuses. because of these earlier experiences, codependent adults often lack the skills necessary to lead mature lives and have satisfying relationships. recovery from codependence comes from clearing up the toxic feelings left over form childhood and learning to reparent oneself by intervening on the adult symptoms of codependence. central to mellody's concept is the idea of the 'precious child' that needs healing within each adult. she creates a framework for identifying codependent behavior and describes an effective approach to recovery that includes both therapy and self-help processes. designed to be used with the author's workbook for codependents entitled: breaking free.
Reviews:
This book has helped me and many people that I have loaned it to or bougtht them a copy. Seems like I am always having to replace this book. I found it not only helps people with their own problems, but explains what behaviors come out of us and how it affects others. When I first read this book years ago I found myself and all those around me, famiy included, in the descriptions of peoples behaviors. It truely changed my life and I have watched it change others lives. It is nice to have answers and to understand our behavior better. We can't change what we don't know or understand about ourselves. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to change and who want to understand why they behave some of the ways we do! We are all Co-dependent on some level.petrasplace
Pia mellody has written a book stating co-dependence is a result of child sexual abuse and I feel such fault at this book and this author as co-dependence comes in many forms and stems from many experiences and can not just be put down to being sexually abused. Obviously as the writer believes that sexual abuse in childhood produces co-dependent adults she focuses solely on this and her evidence is aimed at only proving this theory, disregarding evidence that supports other claims (such as co-dependency due to being abandoned by a parent or due to a parent dying etc etc). Due to this narrow minded view I have to rate this book as a very low 3 out of 10.
Helpful for understanding relationships and how people in your life shape your experience of emotions and your expression. Examples of nurturing family relationships are given as well as examples of toxic relationships. The cover picture is interesting, it is a corner room with two windows but there is only a shadow facing one direction, symbolizing point of view can be influenced.rivkafreeman
3. The New Codependency: Help And Guidance For Today's Generation [Book]

Product Details:
In codependent no more, melody beattie introduced the world to the term codependency. now a modern classic, this book established beattie as a pioneer in self-help literature and endeared her to millions of readers who longed for healthier relationships. twenty-five years later concepts such as self-care and setting boundaries have become entrenched in mainstream culture. now beattie has written a followup volume, the new codependency, which clears up misconceptions about codependency, identifies how codependent behavior has changed, and provides a new generation with a road map to wellness. the question remains: what is and what is not codependency? beattie here reminds us that much of codependency is normal behavior. it's about crossing lines. feeling resentment after giving is not the same as heartfelt generosity. narcissism and self-love, enabling and nurturing, and controlling and setting boundaries are not interchangeable terms. in the new codependency, beattie explores these differences, effectively invoking her own inspiring story and those of others, to empower us to step out of the victim role forever. codependency, she shows, is not an illness but rather a series of behaviors that once broken down and analyzed can be successfully combated. each section offers an overview of and a series of activities pertaining to a particular behavior — caretaking, controlling, manipulation, denial, repression, etc. — enabling us to personalize our own step-bystep guide to wellness.
Reviews:
This book offers clear, manageable steps to improve your life by learning to trust your instincts and stand up for yourself. Learning that you can only change and control yourself–and just how to do that–is an integral part of the book.newme28
A therapist recently recommended this book to us; it is extremely helpful and applicable to probably everyone! It helped me understand what is and isn't healthy in relationships, in general.traci1018

Reviews:
Easy to read and understand. Pleased with my purchase and BAM's speedy and convenient service.Cheryl
This is a very useful book for those who are trying to understand codependency. Whereas there are a lot of references to codependents who are enabling drug or alcohol addicts, the book is broader and allows the reader to understand the sources of codependency as well as a range of behavioural and relationship outcomes. Well recommended as a starting point, most likely needs to be followed through with conversations with a trained therapist.dhawillis2015
Have only read the first two chapters which explain what codependency is and what it's not, and the issues that codependency brings. I wasn't sure if I could identify with the ideas in this book but in actual fact I can see myself in many of the typical traits described. It does say that recovery is possible but as yet I haven't read enough to be able to comment. There are various exercises that can be carried out, but again these come later on. So far it is a compelling and informative read and I hope it proves useful.stev7770

I first learned of this book in 1989 after my divorce. My therapists still rings in my head after all these years. One good parent is better than no parent at all.it has conitinued to help through many other life problemsguidrbarba
For the price, this book is excellent. It opens doors of self-evaluation and means of strength that anyone who struggles with this type of issue can. gain a better understanding and ways to cope with necessary changes.docba-21
I am an adult child of an alcoholic/addict, have been married to an alcoholic for 22 years, who I am currently going through a divorce with, and have a 16 year old recovering addict/alcoholic. I have been a member of Al-Anon, which is a group for those affected by another's alcoholism. I have had a copy of this book for several years and just hadn't gotten around to reading it. For some reason, on a particularly bad night, recently, I was led to pick this book up. Over the next few days I devoured the book, underlining like a madwoman. It's not that I had never heard the concepts before, but that she put them together and presented them to me in a way I finally UNDERSTOOD. She spoke my language in both this book, and the companion book, equally good, called "Beyond Codependency". I have passed the original book along, and had to order myself another copy. It is a book I know I will read and re-read many times as I continue to recover from the effects of being codependent to alcoholics and other dysfunctional people, have had on my life. I am learning it is not helping anyone to do so much for them that it drains me to the point I am in the hospital. Codependency had its hooks into me pretty heavily, hopefully you will find this book, and follow its advice earlier than I did, and before it nearly kills you. The author wholeheartedly supports 12-step groups, like Al-Anon, AA, Narcotics Anonymous, and they myriad of other groups that have sprung from AA. She also explains them accurately, dispelling many of he myths about them. Even if you don't think you have alcoholism or addiction in any of your family or friends, but perhaps you don't understand someone else's crazy behavior or your crazy reaction to it, read this book. I have learned there are many other disorders which create the havoc which can breed codendency in others, as we attempt to survive. We aren't bad or weak because we are codependent. We learned certain behaviors and techniques to survive the unsurvivable, which are not good for us, or helpful to the alcoholic. We can't help it if we have never seen normal, so we don't know what it is. Read this book. You will see a light at the end of the tunnel, or may be able to recognize someone else who needs the light. No matter how bad the situation, there is hope. I understand why I could never leave my husband, no matter how badly he treated myself or my children. I am learning to let go of the resentments and shame that froze me. I am learning to look outside myself and the sick people around me for answers so I can get well, which will help my children break the cycle of the disease.franstuff

**updated march 2020 error free version**can you think of anything more difficult than trying to cope with your own mental illness? how about while doing that, trying to deal with a significant other's problems as well? if you can relate to this, then keep on reading… for the first three decades of my life, i was hopeless at relationships. a natural empath, i felt all the pains of my mother's codependent existence with my father. at school or on the streets, i was attuned to every row and argument, and i felt small each time i witnessed them. as i grew up, my mood was determined by the moods of others around me. i felt happy when others were happy, and i was irretrievably sad when others around me were sad. worst of all, i could see beyond even their masks of happiness to their innate sadness. my daily routine was essentially a series of sad mood after sad mood. i wanted so badly to be the hero for everyone around me, and that led me into a codependent relationship with my ex-husband. built upon a less-than-ideal childhood, i grew to love the feeling of being needed to clean my husband's life up. – i became addicted to him so much that i lost who i really was. in the process of caring for him, i forgot to take care of me. the result was that i suffered severe mental break-downs regularly. for two full years, i was a nervous wreck seeking appreciation and understanding from the same narcissistic people who fed off my insecurities. – it was not until i learnt to cut them off that i was able to return to being me. i only started to enjoy myself when i went for therapy and learnt to rebuild the boundaries i had lost in my relationship. – in "cure codependency and conquer as an empath" here's just a fraction of what you will learn: what a day in the life of a true empath consists of – the 7 main foundations that lead us to codependent relationships later in life – the top 5 ways narcissistic partners seek to manipulate you to do their bidding – an acid-test for knowing if your relationship is toxic or not – the 6 main differences between healthy and unhealthy relationships – the flow of energy that allows empaths to get absorbed in other people's emotions – why mindfulness is the way back to taking back control of your life – step by step how to redraw boundaries and start the rebuilding process now – why therapy is the surest path out of toxic relationships – how to stop feeling bad about what is essentially a superpower and focus on using your healing powers to help others without getting destroyed in the process. – and so much more. – are you interested in limiting the effects of narcissism directed towards you? do you want to learn why you get absorbed in other people's emotions and lose yourself even in strangers? do you want to know how to take back control of your life and love yourself every moment? take this chance to finally become master of your life once again by clicking the 'add to cart' button! it is the first step to learning to live for yourself! take it now before it's too late.

I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and have used this book with my clients for over 15 years. It is by far one of the best books written on the subject of codependency. Most self help books are big on describing the problem and small on offering solutions for overcoming the problem. This book covers both with plenty of examples. If you think you are suffering from codependency issues, then this is the book for you.huntergreg777
