1. Hawaii By James A Michener

Product Details:
Hawaii is part of the rookie read-about geography. in hawaii, pulitzer prize-winning author james michener weaves the classic saga that brought hawaii's epic history vividly alive to the american public on its initial publication in 1959, and continues to mesmerize even today. the volcanic processes by which the hawaiian islands grew from the ocean floor were inconceivably slow, and the land remained untouched by man for countless centuries until, little more than a thousand years ago, polynesian seafarers made the perilous journey across the pacific and discovered their new home. they lived and flourished in this tropical paradise according to their ancient traditions and beliefs until, in the early nineteenth century, american missionaries arrived, bringing a new creed and a new way of life to a stone age society. the impact of the missionaries had only begun to be absorbed when other national groups, with equally different customs, began to migrate in great numbers to the islands. the story of modern hawaii, and of this novel, is one of how disparate peoples, struggling to keep their identity yet live with one another in harmony, ultimately joined together to build america's strong and vital fiftieth state.

3. Kaaawa: A Novel About Hawaii In The 1850s [Book]

Product Details:
"as beautiful as hawaii itself, this novel approaches epic magnitude. the narrator is hiram nihoa, through whom the author pours his love for hawaii. nihoa tells the story of his travels around the island of oahu a century ago, evoking the scene and the people as he saw and loved them. nihoa's narrative is taken up by a strange new englander in the second half of the book. saul bristol, a sad and bitter man, reveals hawaii through the eyes of a newcomer. the two narratives embody the conflict between the old and the new which has had so much to do with the way hawaii has developed…. in some ways … a lament, but overall a mele aloha, a song of love." –publisher's weekly

This is a good "nutshell" of a history read BUT I got it for a person that would not enjoy the tediousness of the stated facts, so I returned it. If you retain easily and are reasonable intelligent, and very interested in a short but factual history, this will be okay for you BUT do not buy it for someone with a short attention span. This book would be too intense for them.gibittome.2013

Nice clean copy. Excellent. Thank you.bcbatt52
I recalled this book from when I was quite young frequenting a library with my dear old Dad, sadly, now, long gone. He always went for the big tomes. Fifty years on, I thought Id see what he liked about this book and so found this copy. I have thoroughly enjoyed the fictional journey behind the formation of Hawaii. Thanks Dad for introducing me to this classic novel albeit decades after I remember you sitting by the open fire, feet up, cuppa in hand, engrossed in reading it. I have now ordered a copy of Shogun, another of your favourite novels. Theses are not modern books and the authors are deceased but nevertheless their novels are worth a read, after all, your Dad is seldom wrongcastlebarnes

Reviews:
I am moving to Hawaii in a few months because my husband is in the Navy and we will be stationed on Oahu for 3 years. I just wanted to get prepared to know as much as possible about the islands and what to expect for our life there. The author is pretty thorough about many aspects of the island and there is even a whole chapter on military. The author does spend a pretty large amount of time warning people NOT to move to the islands because of the cost of living and other factors that make life in Hawaii difficult (racial tensions, unemployment, bad school system etc.). I think she could have done a better job illuminating these issues without trying to "scare folks" into not moving there. But if I were some wacked out hippie just going to Hawaii with a head full of dreams and no job planned ahead, I would need to get scared out of moving there. It is a disaster waiting to happen! I guess it depends on your mindset, but it is overall a very good reference book. Oh, but I disagree with her views on going to the islands to have a romantic fling or affair. BAD IDEA! I am excited to go with the man that I love and that I am already committed to and I hope that the romantic atmosphere just makes our love that much stronger.dorothymmcdowell

Hawaii is one of the most beautiful places i've ever had the opportunity to photograph! it is exceptionally stunning and reminds me of fantasy place of "never never land" from disney story peter pan. this coffee table book includes images from the big island, maui and kauai. of the islands i visited, i enjoyed photographing the island of kauai the most. it's known as the "garden isle" since the majority of the island is covered with tropical rainforest. i had the luxury of photographing the famous "na pali coastline" from two perspectives. one from a zodiac in the water and then another hiking the 35.4km trail.
