This is a nice little paperback picture book from the perspective of a young boy whose neighborhood friend has autism. It is well told and the illustrations are fun. The boy talks honestly about how his friend Matt sometimes "acts weird" and what he does to help Matt cope with situations that come up in their time together. For example, when Matt has a meltdown because the pool is closed, his buddy invites him over to his house to run through the sprinkler and play fireman with the hose. There are probably at least a half-dozen tips that could be picked up from this book that would help a neurologically-typical kid know how to be a good friend to a kid who has autism. This book does not teach autism acceptance. It teaches your Autistic child to mask. It teaches them how to act more like their neurotypical peers, which leads to serious mental health issues. It teaches them that their Autistic behaviours are an issue that should be controlled and reduced for the comfort of everyone around them. It is an absolutely horrible resource that no one should ever read, let alone an Autistic child or parent of an Autistic child. If you want to create permanent damage to your Autistic child, give them this book. It refers to gifts showing pictures of parcels which a autistic child would see as presents not gifts in eg memory, extra sensory issues.
