4. The Book Thief By Markus Zusak
Product Details:
The extraordinary #1 new york times bestseller that will be in movie theaters on november 15, 2013, markus zusak's unforgettable story is about the ability of books to feed the soul. it is 1939. nazi germany. the country is holding its breath. death has never been busier, and will become busier still. liesel meminger is a foster girl living outside of munich, who scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she cant resistbooks. with the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the jewish man hidden in her basement. in superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author markus zusak, author of i am the messenger, has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time.
Reviews:
This book was simply amazing. It has a unique narrator perspective who will surprise you by how sympathetic he is. That is to begin. Then, you will become entirely entranced by the characters. This book being about WWII, it deals with difficult themes, but it is careful to avoid dwelling too long on horror; it is a beautiful book that avoids cliches and stereotypes. Although it is hard, ultimately it is redemptive. It is full of compassion and love as well.gretchen.w
I was surprised when I opened the book, and on the first page death was the narrator. The fact that death is a narrator could have been a fun twist to story, but sadly it only decreases the reader's interest, because he always tell you what is gonna happen in advance. In the first chapter he spoiled the end of the book. That was a really negative and annoying feature of the book. It is based on the Holocaust, but doesnt add anything more to your knowledge than a middle school class experience. I think that it has some advantages because it doesn't give to much detailed about the war (I have started a similar holocaust a book, which I couldn't finish, because it was to graphic about the camps and the war. ) and I think that it brings awareness to history, for especially who do not live in Europe (the writer is Australian). As for the German of the book, I was expecting something more to be honest. It only uses minimum amount of German words and even those are always followed by a translation. It can be my bad for expecting too much. I think that this a book is for teens and not young adults. It is definitely a long book, that might scare some kids away, but overall based on the content this is better for a younger audience. There are no really horrific pictures, so it is not damaging to younger readers. Overall it was ok, but I would recommend instead The diary of Anne Frank to read.kandence
I Adore this book! First of all, let my say that I actually saw the movie before reading this book. I enjoyed the movie, but the book (of course) is soooo much more. The way the author writes the entire book from deaths perspective is genius! Especially in A dark time such as Nazi Germany. The book follows the life of a young girl who loses her brother and gets her hands on her first book. Throughout the story readers are on the girls journey; The people she meets, friends she makes, and her love of books. Every character brought into the story just adds more depth to hers. For me, this book was amazingly written and left a footprint on my heart. 💜carrissa.b

For a few years I was told about this book, how it would capture me from the very beginning… and it absolutely did! Mark Zusak pours his entire heart and soul in the writing process and makes it all just come alive, has become one of my favorite authors. The scariest thing about this book… is the ending. the last page. the last sentence. CHILLING but brilliant.Annie
A beautifully written novel. Very real characters, absorbing, the pages filled with a full spectrum of human emotions. It touched me deeply, as heartfelt as Cafe Francaise, (the latter all the more poignant, because its author, who ceaselessly toiled through her handwritten manuscript, was taken away to die in a concentration camp before its completion). Thank you, Mr Zusak, for a very fine read.compwoman4

You was interesting and highly engrossing from the very beginning. I enjoyed that the story is from 2nd narration. The story is a little bit creepy, but not too creepy. It does feature lots of stalking, violence, and murder, just so people are aware before starting the book.Peppermint1991
This was definitely very different than what I have ever read before. Creepy. Odd. Messes up with your mind but addicting. This book is not for everyone. *Note: I read this way before the TV series came out. Still haven't watched it yet.I am so conflicted in whether I like or hate Joe Goldberg. He is a creepy, smart, psychotic stalker. I should dislike him for that but sometimes I don't. He is a hopeless romantic that needs help. But I don't think any help will actually help him. He knows what he is doing therefore none of his actions are acceptable. Joe meets Guinevere Beck at the bookstore he works at and is instantly obsessed. He will do anything for her, and he does. Every other character in this book isn't any better than him in a way. Yes they don't stalk and hurt people but their actions and personality aren't the greatest either. This book is a crazy read. It will make you so conflicted because you will hate yourself for liking this guy.tiffany.l
Received a copy of this novel as an advanced reader edition in my store a month or two before the release date. While I lay hands on nearly every new release of the year, this one immediately caught my attention and I took it home to read. I found the use of the 2nd person pov a refreshing perspective and was instantly caught up in a love affair with the narrator – his keen wit, unconventional viewpoints and social awkwardness were very endearing. A little into the novel, I started thinking "This guy might be a little creepy." A little further, I started thinking, "Yeah…this guy is kinda creepy.". A little further, and I realize, "Yes. Yes, this guy is definitely a creeper," but yet I'm still somewhat enthralled. His actions and conclusions seem so normal and such a matter-of-course to him, it's very easy to sympathize and see him as the victim rather than the victimizer. I sometimes hesitate to recommend this book to customers as it's so incredibly creepy, but if you are a mature reader with a love for psychological thrillers, this book is an absolute must read!Lisa, GM

Beautiful writer, great storyMARIA
I love Ms Woodson's style of writing. Her use of foretelling kept me intrigued to learn how each life event would unfold and affect the future. I love the way she entwined historical events of 9/11 and Greenwood into her character's fate. Her portrait of an African American family across generations was authentic, inspiring, and heartbreaking.Retired to Read
The book arrived promptly and was brand new, however I personally just didn't find the book compelling or engaging. That's not the book's problem, just mine–I love reading and try to include a variety of books in my selections but this one just didn't fit my taste somehow–I'm sure others will find it more to their tastedyannamom

Phyllis A. Whitney was one of my first favorite authors. Back in the day, I could hardly wait for her new releases to show up in my dad's monthly book club mailings. He would always buy them for me because, of course, he wanted to encourage a lively interest in books. Phyllis Whitney fueled my love of reading then, and now, years later, she fuels my love of writing. Her "Guide to Fiction Writing" covers all of the basics including plot, characters, outlines, research, conflict, suspense, revision, etc. She delves into the craft of writing and expounds on the finer points such as "show, don't tell." The whole book is written in a comfortable, casual style, as though she is having a private discussion with the reader-who she clearly respects as a fellow writer. She's not sitting on a high horse looking down her nose at all of us. It feels more like she's sitting on the other end of the sofa. What I like best about this book is the way the author projects enthusiasm for the business of writing and stays positive about finding success. "Good fortune and opportunities are always coming along," she writes. "Perhaps opportunity is like a train on an endless track. Now and then it makes a stop at your station, often without fanfare, and without warning…When the breaks came for me I was doing the right thing. I didn't know it was the right thing, but even when there was no opportunity in sight, I was working. You, who may be just beginning: What you do now counts. Never mind the rejections, the discouragement, the voices of ridicule (there can be those too). Work and wait and learn, and that train will come by. If you give up, you'll never have a chance to climb aboard." Although it was written over twenty years ago, this book is timeless…as is Phyllis Whitney herself. –Lana Jordan, author of "Journey to Motherhood" and "The Sleepytime Ponies Trick a Trickster"flyingponies
