2. India After Gandhi: The History Of The World's Largest Democracy [Book]

Product Details:
From one of the subcontinent's most important and controversial writers comes this definitive history of post-partition india, published on the 60th anniversary of independence told in lucid and beautiful prose, the story of india's wild ride toward and since independence is a riveting one. taking full advantage of the dramatic details of the protests and conflicts that helped shape the nation, politically, socially, and economically, guha writes of the factors and processes that have kept the country together, and kept it democratic, defying the numerous prophets of doom. moving between history and biography, this story provides fresh insights into the lives and public careers of those legendary and long-serving prime ministers, jawaharlal nehru and his daughter, indira gandhi. guha includes vivid sketches of the major "provincial" leaders, but also writes with feeling and sensitivity about lesser-known indians–peasants, tribals, women, workers, and untouchables. massively researched and elegantly written, this is the work of a major scholar at the height of his powers, a brilliant and definitive history of what is possibly the most important, occasionally the most exasperating, and certainly the most interesting country in the world.

4. A Brief History Of India [Book]

Product Details:
An updated look at more than 5,000 years of india's history. as recently as the turn of the century, western images of india pictured it as a land of religion, luxury, and desperate poverty—holy men sitting cross-legged by the roadside, fat maharajas on bejeweled elephants, or poverty-stricken beggars picking garbage for scraps to eat. now that image has started to change. today americans are more likely to imagine indian workers in call centers taking jobs needed in the united states or kids winning fortunes on quiz shows as in slumdog millionaire. admired for its spiritual traditions (two of the world's major religions—hinduism and buddhism—originated here), for its peaceful struggle for independence led by mohandas k. gandhi, and for its vibrant culture (from bollywood and spicy cuisine to classical music and world-renowned authors), india has had a long and fascinating history. however, while most people are familiar with certain parts of indian history and culture, the roots of the country's contemporary society and politics are not always well understood in the west. covering approximately 5,000 years of history, a brief history of india, second edition offers an accessible, reliable introduction to the rich and diverse history of india.coverage includes: caste, kings, and the hindu world order gandhi and the nationalist movement constructing the nation bollywood and beyond india in the twenty-first century.

9. The North American Indian: The Complete Portfolios [Book]

Product Details:
At the turn of the 20th century, the american photographer edward sheriff curtis (1868-1952) started on his 30-year project to produce a monumental study of north american indians. using an approach that was both artistically and scientifically ambitious, he recorded, in words and pictures, the traces of the traditional indian way of life that was already beginning to die out. – with tireless personal commitment curtis visited 80 american indian tribes from the mexican border to the bering strait, gaining their confidence through his patience and sensitivity. his work was printed in 20 volumes between 1907 and 1930 as the north american indian, but with only 272 copies, originals became extremely rare. – this book gathers curtis's entire american indian portfolio into one publication, offering renewed access to and appreciation of his extraordinary achievement, which is as much a precious historical document as a triumph of the photographic form. – about the series – bibliotheca universalis — compact cultural companions celebrating the eclectic taschen universe!
Reviews:
Edward S Curtis and his lifelong photography has long been an interest and this book brings together his complete works in much more detail than I had first thought. The layout of tribal groups is especially helpful and the story behind his pursuit of his subject is fascinating. Perhaps a slightly larger book would have helped show off the images to greater effect. But the print quality is easily sufficient for the sizephpalex300
Fabulous book at a remarkably low price, however…. WoB think that a thin plastic bag is 'packing' . Result; Sadly, a good 600+ page book arrived with most of the corners bashed beyond repair. I didn't give the best feedback, I thought understandably, so received none myself ! A typical Amazon / World of Books / World Control attitude. ~ I'll most likely be prevented from ever buying again as a result of this….. 1984 or what !bazhome
Beautiful book. In better condition than described. It's perfect. I absolutely love these gorgeous portfolios.gcm8870

13. The History Of The American Indians [Book]

Product Details:
James adair's superb accounts of the native americans are derived from his personal experiences meeting and interacting with the various tribes during the 18th century colonial era. james adair was a passionate chronicler, explorer and trader who ventured through north america in an effort to discover new lands and exchange goods with the native peoples. he spent decades traversing what is now the deep south of the united states, and was among the first white men to discover certain tribes, distinguishing between their behaviors and customs with a depth no historian had managed. although an amateur scholar, adair meticulously recorded his observations. as a result, this book contains both mundane and profound facts – the sum combining to form an evocative picture of peoples now lost to time. the joys of community and traditions such as dancing and ceremonies are tempered by the inter-tribal conflicts, murder and blood feuds, incipient alcoholism and increasing threat of european settlers. close to half of this book is dedicated to the notion that the native american tribes are descended from the 'lost tribes of israel'. now discredited after anthropologists determined the original migration routes, it is thought adair inserted these analyses in part to cater for popular demand at the time. from the mid-17th to the early-19th century, the notion that the native americans were directly descended from the israelites of ancient times was a popular phenomena. many scholars postulate that the book of mormon was partly inspired by adair's history. the rest of adair's work however contains insights that can never be rediscovered or elaborated upon. the wars and gradual conquest of the native american tribes by white settlers left precious little of their culture available for scrutiny by subsequent generations of historian. as such, this book remains one of the most valuable and cited primary sources on the subject.

Product Details:
An entirely new history of india; indian history needs to be re-examined and freed from colonial biases and error. driven by christian belief in a 6000-year old planet, british scholars, and their indian hires, post-dated indian history to fit into erroneous western conceptions. for their own agendas the manufactures theories such as that of an "aryan invasion" and dismissed vast evidences, such as the existence of the river sarasvati, as "mythical", even though it was mentioned more than fifty times in the vedas. the colonial gaze also erroneously represented events such as the invasion of india by alexander the great in the year 326 bce and fabricated myths such as the conversion of emperor ashoka to buddhism, purportedly due to "remorse" after the terrible battle of kalinga, when ashoka already a buddhist at the time of the battle. thus this book rewrites indian history based on new evidence including new scientific, linguistic and genetic discoveries. it seeks to dismantle the cliches, to clarify the controversies, and to retrace, as accurately as possible, the most significant periods of indian history-history much older than previously thought

15. A Concise History Of Modern India [Book]

Product Details:
Metcalf, has become a classic in the field since it was first published in 2001. as a fresh interpretation of indian history from the mughals to the present, it has informed students across the world. in the third edition of the book, a final chapter charts the dramatic developments of the last twenty years, from 1990 through the congress electoral victory of 2009, to the rise of the indian high-tech industry in a country still troubled by poverty and political unrest. the narrative focuses on the fundamentally political theme of the imaginative and institutional structures that have successively sustained and transformed india, first under british colonial rule and then, after 1947, as an independent country. woven into the larger political narrative is an account of india's social and economic development, and its rich cultural life. throughout, the authors argue that despite a powerful historiographical tradition to the contrary, no enduring meaning can be given to categories such as 'caste', 'hindu', 'muslim', or even 'india'.
