3. Alpha-Phonics A Primer For Beginning Readers [Book]
Product Details:
This is the new 2019 version of alpha-phonics. now at a sensationally low, low price. the one & only original alpha-phonics used by tens of thousands since it was introduced in the late 1970's. alpha-phonics is probably the simplest, most effective, wonderfully priced phonics instruction programs available. here is why it works so well: it is simple there are only 44 phonograms (sounds) the child needs to learn in order to read. reading, contrary to what you have been told, is easy to teach because all you have to do is teach the student to sound out the words they want to read. at first they sound the words out aloud, later they do it in their head silently. that is all there is to teaching reading. mom get this: all 128 lessons in alpha-phonics are covered in only 14 pages of instructions for you. students begin with short vowels putting together simple words (like a with m = am or a with s = as) and progress to the more advanced words. with alpha-phonics the beginner can be reading simple sentences by lesson three, and that can even be on the first day other reading instruction programs try to do way too much. they inject grammar, pictures and other material, needlessly complicating the task. alpha-phonics just teaches reading only. alpha-phonics has as a bonus: you teach spelling easily as you go (through simple dictation). alpha-phonics easily introduces over 3,500 words in its simple 128 lessons. some students can learn to read in only months. alpha-phonics also works very well for older students, even grown adults who need remediation. is there a negative about alpha-phonics? yes. it is: some moms say they think their child can become bored when taught by alpha-phonics. why? parents have been convinced that learning has to be fun-time. they have been led to believe games, card decks, cartoons/pictures, spin the needle tricks, etc., make it fun. they feel they have to entertain their kids while teaching. but, this unnecessarily slows down the process. with alpha-phonics the student can actually be reading simple sentences even day one students do see lists of words in alpha-phonics lessons, but they quickly are actually reading those words; they are accomplishing, instead of being entertained. the bells and whistles in other programs slow the process and cost time and money $$. the huge sense of success in actually reading quickly overcomes any other consideration. nothing need be copied on separate paper. makes everything much easier than if it were on 5 x 8 pages. alpha-phonic is highly recommended by leading homeschooling curriculum reviewers such as mary pride, cathy duffy, karen andreola. there are two digital versions of alpha-phonics: cd rom version and flash drive version sold separately on amazon for only $ 9.00. the new flash drive version isbn: 9780941995412. both digital versions contain everything you find in the book plus sound of the author reading the instructions. amazon also has a set of practice readers and a practice phonics workbook to accompany alpha-phonics. the alpha-phonics and how to tutor little companion readers (10 books combined into one handy book): $ 19.95 (isbn 9780941995344). they are specifically designed to follow along with the alpha-phonics book as you teach from it. the other resource is the alpha-phonics and how to tutor phonics companion practice workbook: $ 19.95 (isbn: 9780941995337). designed to accompany the alpha-phonics book as you go through the lessons.note: the digital versions are for windows only.
Reviews:
My kids were really dragging their feet with reading lessons until I got this. My daughter likes to have an option between this and the Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching ReadingElizabeth
Alpha-Phonics is a book that teaches children to read in a series of lessons that increase in difficulty What makes this different from many other reading programs is that it is just reading no bells and whistles no cartoons no fancy color pictures just combining sounds to form words That is the beauty of Alpha-Phonics because there is very little to distract a wiggly 5 year old To use this program effectively a child does need to have some knowledge of letters but they will learn the letter sounds as they go There are even some pages for kids who need to learn the letters firstFor example in Lesson One the child sees the a and says the a sound then sees a t and says the t sound then sees the a and t together and blends the sounds together to say at This is repeated several more times The child learns that reading is simply putting the sounds together to make words Since each lesson is short this book is appropriate for young children who don t have the attention span to sit for too long This is a book that goes along well with just about any reading program or curriculum since it is so simple and can be used in short sessionsThis program proves that you don t need hundreds of dollars to teach children to read! In the age of Hooked on Phonics and other reading programs that cost hundreds of dollars Alpha-Phonics is a breath of fresh air and hearkens back to a simpler time where reading was more about letters and sounds and less about frills and games I am using Alpha-Phonics right now with my son who is 4 and it is a great way to introduce the basics of reading in a way that is clear an not frustrating and confusing
If your kid isnt getting this yet just wait a little longer. I have had two of my kids teach themselves to read at 3 and one who didnt read till 10 and two who are on track and one who is just starting to get this at 7. It varies but the program is great. If you push your kid too hard they can shut down and it can be worse for them in the long run.Emily

Reviews:
"Something In the Water" by Catherine Steadman is a tale of love, greed, betrayal, mystery and murder. All those things that make a great book! Erin is a documentarian and she has thought of a great idea… interviewing three inmates who are getting ready to be released soon. She will interview them inside prison, film their release and interview them after. During this process, Erin and Mark finally get married and take a dream honeymoon to Bora Bora. However, while deep sea diving, they find a mysterious bag that changes their lives forever… and not in a good way. Spoiler Alert! I loved this book. It had a great beginning and I was hooked from the first sentence. It kept me entertained and I have never pondered the difference between flotsam and jetsam so much. 😉 In the end, my only issue was that I was not 100% sure about the wreck and when Mark became involved. I think that he was tangled up in the mess from the beginning. He was an experienced diver and it was quite coincidental that they just happened upon the wreck, he found the bag, and he dove to the wreck alone. In the final chapter, Erin is pondering how everything happened and she recounted the huge blow up with Mark the night they slashed the wedding cost. I also thought it odd at the time that they cut the wedding expenses so much but still went to Bora Bora for two weeks. I think I know why; he was involved from the get go! Also, he had not seen Hector since before the wedding. He was busy planning something for all that time & his persona changed quite a bit. I think that deep down Erin knew that there was something "off" with Mark and that is why she chose not to tell him about the baby. I loved how all three of her interviewees became a part of her life, especially Eddie. I still wonder if Eddie might have been involved somehow in the whole mess or was he just somewhat of a father figure/helper t to Erin. He obviously liked her since he assisted her in the sale of the diamonds and the ensuing coveruTDdo
Lots of twists and turns about a couple who marries, goes on their honeymoon and discovers an unknown bag in the water. Once they get the bag open, the characters change in many unexpected ways. I enjoyed the journey of the entire book. Read it.NANCY
I found the book very boring and repetitive. I read constantly and enjoy a good thriller but I guessed how this would end and found the main characters unbelievable. I would rate this a 4 out of 10 for reading; I was very disappointed with the book.. I do not recommend.maryann4929

6. A Little Life: A Novel [Book]
Product Details:
National book award finalistshort-listed for the man booker prizebrace yourself for the most astonishing, challenging, upsetting, and profoundly moving book in many a season. an epic about love and friendship in the twenty-first century that goes into some of the darkest places fiction has ever traveled and yet somehow improbably breaks through into the light. truly an amazement—and a great gift for its readers. when four classmates from a small massachusetts college move to new york to make their way, they're broke, adrift, and buoyed only by their friendship and ambition. there is kind, handsome willem, an aspiring actor; jb, a quick-witted, sometimes cruel brooklyn-born painter seeking entry to the art world; malcolm, a frustrated architect at a prominent firm; and withdrawn, brilliant, enigmatic jude, who serves as their center of gravity. over the decades, their relationships deepen and darken, tinged by addiction, success, and pride. yet their greatest challenge, each comes to realize, is jude himself, by midlife a terrifyingly talented litigator yet an increasingly broken man, his mind and body scarred by an unspeakable childhood, and haunted by what he fears is a degree of trauma that he’ll not only be unable to overcome—but that will define his life forever. in rich and resplendent prose, yanagihara has fashioned a tragic and transcendent hymn to brotherly love, a masterful depiction of heartbreak, and a dark examination of the tyranny of memory and the limits of human endurance.
Reviews:
Haven’t read the book yet but this was highly recommended by my friends that’s why I bought it. The copy I got was in pristine condition. I always worry about ordering books online since most of the time they get damaged during delivery. However, this wasn’t the case for this one.Marie
i bought this book having high hopes for it. I am not happy with the way it came, the spine has awful cracks all down and the pages are bent meanwhile the front cover has bends through it too. Not pleased and i will never buy from here again. do not reccomend thisbecamp-5493
I was looking for something new to read and saw this book on a 'Top 100 Must Read' type online site. So thought I'd give it a go. It took a short while to get into the characters and remember who was who (as there were quite a few to begin with). But once in… I was gripped. Such a beautiful, thought provoking book. So sad and distressing at times, but done in such an empathetic way, it didn't upset me too much. The characters are so individually great that you genuinely can't wait to read another page. I have already recommended this book to a friend and bought it for another. This book is so different to your usual 'easy read' type of book and extremely addictive once started. I honestly couldn't stop reading it. Some days, for hours! The content of the book could be too much for some people, but the way the writer portrayed such sadness and badness, made it that much more interesting. Certainly a 5/5 book. Buy. I know you won't regret it.jesslovesmax
7. The Silent Patient [Book]
Product Details:
**the instant #1 new york times bestseller**"an unforgettable—and hollywood-bound—new thriller… a mix of hitchcockian suspense, agatha christie plotting, and greek tragedy."—entertainment weekly – the silent patient is a shocking psychological thriller of a woman’s act of violence against her husband—and of the therapist obsessed with uncovering her motive. – alicia berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. a famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of london’s most desirable areas. one evening her husband gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word. – alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts alicia into notoriety. the price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the grove, a secure forensic unit in north london. – theo faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with alicia. his determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations—a search for the truth that threatens to consume him….
Reviews:
A well done psychological thriller. This might even be my favorite psychological thriller book! A woman commits a horrific crime and then goes silent, and is placed In a psychiatric ward. Everyone has given up on trying to reach her except for one young therapist. I love how the author dives into such a serious psychological response and helps us all try to understand it as we read. There's no judgement for those with mental illness and he tries to paint a picture for us what it would be like and to what extents humans will go to when they are fearful and scared. It was amazing to see how the author could develop a character so well even when she didn't speak! There are many surprises, that's probably all I should write! You'll love this!ajskid
This book is an easy and pleasant read. There is little to no suspense, horror or macabre. The "twist" will please some, but will be a bit disappointing to others. The middle of the book is very interesting, moves well, and is the main reason that I pushed my review to 4 stars. The rest of the book (chapters 1-3 or so, and the final twist and conclusion portions) were very run of the mill. This was the first book I purchased in a few years. I am trying to get back to my tradition of buying a bestseller written by an author I am unfamiliar with over the holidays. (This is how I discovered Dan Simmons, whose book "The Terror" stands as one of my most rewarding choices so far). This one was mostly a disappointment. My advice is to find it cheap or even shop for a used copy. There's a good chance you won't hang on to this one.Father Wolverine
Storyline/Overview – Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist and he is interested in Alice's story who has murdered her husband. He is determined to get to the details behind the crime. Even though the patient (Alice) is Silent throughout the narrative, the story progresses to spotlight her complex characteristics. "Unexpressed emotions never die. They are buried alive, and will come forth later, in uglier ways" BEST Psychological Thriller I have read in a long time! My opinion – Very well researched topic and the quotes at the start of every part of the book make sense at the end Every scenario described feels so realistic and I was amazed how much engrossed I was in this book Nice pace and a very easy to understand and read kind of language used The plot has a nice edginess and it wants you to keep turning pages to figure out what happens next! I was amazed at the flawless development of the characters, outstanding buildup and curiosity maintained and in fact increasing as pages turned! The final twist is the unique climax and no matter how much aware you are of the story, you'll still not be able to predict it and I was mind blown by that sole fact The chapters are well divided and the engrossing fast-paced read makes it a page turner for sure! I enjoyed this wonderful psychological drama ride and cannot believe it is debut novel by Alex. Kudos!! Conclusion – It is definitely a clever and intriguing story with a mind-blowing twist to enjoy! The Silent Patient SPEAKS a lot 😉 It is for sure one of my favorite reads of 2019!TheAvidBookerfly
8. The Pillars Of The Earth: A Novel [Book]
Product Details:
#1 new york times bestselleroprah's book club selectionthe “extraordinary . . . monumental masterpiece” (booklist) that changed the course of ken follett’s already phenomenal career—and begins where its prequel, the evening and the morning, ended.“ follett risks all and comes out a clear winner,” extolled publishers weekly on the release of the pillars of the earth. a departure for the bestselling thriller writer, the historical epic stunned readers and critics alike with its ambitious scope and gripping humanity. today, it stands as a testament to follett’s unassailable command of the written word and to his universal appeal. the pillars of the earth tells the story of philip, prior of kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest gothic cathedral the world has known . . . of tom, the mason who becomes his architect—a man divided in his soul . . . of the beautiful, elusive lady aliena, haunted by a secret shame . . . and of a struggle between good and evil that will turn church against state and brother against brother. a spellbinding epic tale of ambition, anarchy, and absolute power set against the sprawling medieval canvas of twelfth-century england, this is ken follett’s historical masterpiece.
Reviews:
Ken Follett is a master story teller; and "The Pillars of the Earth" is a fascinating insight into the medieval world. This is carried on in the sequel. This book my wife bought me for our 18th wedding anniversary; although I'd read it some years previously. The accuracy of his knowledge of the medieval world is wonderfully demonstrated in "The Pillars . ." A great book, which I would recommend to any lover of historical fiction.nobby0183
I read this many years ago. Though fiction, much if that mentioned in the book was factual – characters, language, behavior and more in and around the era of 12th century Britain. It took me back to a time in history that I had rarely investigated before, The main characters were engaging and elicited my emotions and caring for them. This was a powerful novel that would require me to write something nearly as long, in order to do it justice. The best I can, or want, to do is to say, "Go buy it." You won't be disappointed. PS I loved this book so much, but had lost the original copy (it was damaged), so was ordering this just so that I would always have a copy to read and reference. Unfortunately, the supplier had run out, so could not fill my order. I will look for it again.chapinfo1
This book is my favorite ever. I keep buying them as gifts for others The condition of the book was excellent, but if it was just good I would be happy. Great gifts. If you like history, although its not a history book, it goes back to the knights and Masons. I hated when I was done reading it. I wanted more. Just a hint about the second book written a few years later… I totally didn't connect with anything, big disappointment.eves_world_2005

Reviews:
Poor quality and over-priced.Tiny-sized books; small print and printed on cheap paper in cheap ink. Very "unappealing"presentation negates the valuable content: the phonics method of teaching children to read. I returned this item.Retired educator
BOOKS ARE SMALL SEEM TO BE GOOD FOR THE LITTLE ONES JUST LEARNING TO READ. MY PROBLEM IS THE BOX WAS DAMAGED PRETTY BADLY SO WE HAVE NO WHERE TO STORE THEM NOW. It took awhile longer than it should have to get the items sent and even longer to get them delivered. Overall I needed the books so I guess I got what I needed.morehkathl
My 6 year old really likes this series and the phonics books are really helping her get better at reading. I read each story to her first and then I have her read them. There are instuctions that come with it on how to use the books to teach your child how to read as well.verowag11

Reviews:
2/5 Steam Rating Bi & BIPOC Rep; 3rd Person POV I went into this story blind, as I do most books. What I assumed would be a romance, turned out to be so much more than that! Yes there’s romance within these pages, but what this book is really about is life after losing a spouse. It’s about the hold that grief can have on your life and how finding yourself again can be messy and imperfect. This book is deep and full of feelings, but I wouldn’t have expected anything less from Akwaeke Emezi. This is one author that has quickly become an auto-buy author of mine, it seems that they can do no wrong.Rhi

Reviews:
Wow. This book made me laugh, cry, scream, and tear up with happiness all at once. That is so rare in a book, and Laurie Frankel captures it all in this book. It was so engaging, even when I didn't have time to read, I was thinking about the book. Incredibly written and so very important to have such a book for people to read. Loved every minute.Rach C
Nothing I say could do this novel justice: it is the first book I've read in years that I want to hand out on street corners and force all my friends and family and neighbors to read IMMEDIATELY. It is profound and hilarious and uplifting and thought-provoking and page-turning. I fell in love with the entire family: parents, five kids, and grandma. The writing made me laugh out loud and stay up late for just one more chapter. The story made me think about society and gender in a way I never had before, impressing upon me how absurdly preoccupied we are with what happens to be in other peoples' pants (or skirts). There are fairy tales and horror stories, parenting tips and transformations. Read it!!!!Becca
This book is so honest and real and deals with being different in today's society. It's so raw and definitely a book I couldn't put down. I would read it again. And again.Kadybug
14. Fairy Tale [Book]
Product Details:
A #1 new york times bestseller and new york times book review editors' choice! legendary storyteller stephen king goes into the deepest well of his imagination in this spellbinding novel about a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higher—for that world or ours.charlie reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. but he carries a heavy load. his mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. when charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named radar and her aging master, howard bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. sometimes strange sounds emerge from it. charlie starts doing jobs for mr. bowditch and loses his heart to radar. then, when bowditch dies, he leaves charlie a cassette tape telling a story no one would believe. what bowditch knows, and has kept secret all his long life, is that inside the shed is a portal to another world. king’s storytelling in fairy tale soars. this is a magnificent and terrifying tale in which good is pitted against overwhelming evil, and a heroic boy—and his dog—must lead the battle. early in the pandemic, king asked himself: “what could you write that would make you happy?” “as if my imagination had been waiting for the question to be asked, i saw a vast deserted city—deserted but alive. i saw the empty streets, the haunted buildings, a gargoyle head lying overturned in the street. i saw smashed statues (of what i didn’t know, but i eventually found out). i saw a huge, sprawling palace with glass towers so high their tips pierced the clouds. those images released the story i wanted to tell.”
Reviews:
This book was fantastic. The story is gentle whimsical and character driven. I loved the story and was moved by the journey of the characters and read the book in three days. Easy to read, enjoyable and moving. Less a traditional horror and more a comment on the strength and love that and people can hold onto throughout even the most difficult of timesJackie
Only one of three novels by King that I enjoyed. No let me be clearer; one of the best novels out of ten that I have ever read. BTW the other two were the one about the Kennedy Assassination and the novel he collaborated on with Peter Straub. I can't wait for the movie; hope they don't spoil it I wouldn't change a thing.Rosemarie
I have to admit this was my first Stephen King read! I like many have seen and know all of the movie adaptations based on his books. However, I had never read a single King novel until Fairy Tale. I loved this book and would recommend to anyone! I usually prefer quick reads, books that are fast paced, and no more than 300 pages. Like my mom told me “if it’s good you will want to keep reading no matter how many pages.” She was right and that might be why I have never picked up a Stephen King book until now. I am excited to read his other works now. Fairy Tale keeps you engaged and excited to get back to reading. 🙌Livvynme

Reviews:
this book was good! the second i got it i was so excited to read it! however, i was partially disappointed and DNF'ed around page 200 but later picked it up again. on my second try, i was invested and the reveal had me SOBBING! (UPCOMING SPOILERS WATCH OUT!!!!) i feel like pip changed personality too quick at the end, being a good girl obsessed with her grades and then blandly coming out super publicly that she cheated on her EPQ (i don't actually remember what it was called…) is just out of character and it's a really quick behavioural change….
A good girls guide to murder started off strong and ended with such an unexpected scene that I couldn't wait to pick up the next book. I loved Pippa and Ravi's dynamic friendship and how it played such a heartwarming role in the story. Even when the crime was solved, I had a hard time believing how Holly perfectly fit him as the villain while making him seem innocent and detached from the crime. I am very excited to continue the series and read more of Holly Jackson's books I one hundred percent recommend this series. Please put it in your book list or read it! It is the best murder mystery I have read❤️Reading is life
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I absolutely adored this book. It is a YA mystery/ thriller. With that being said, this is one of the best YA books I have read. The plot and character development were amazing. There were multiple characters throughout the book, but they were really easy to keep track of. I really enjoyed seeing the emails and interview transcripts throughout the book. It made me feel like I was Pip trying to solve this mystery. And let me tell you, I was totally shocked by whodunnit. I am a HUGE true crime podcast lover, so when I started this book it really reminded me of the podcast serial when they cover Adnan Syed’s case. I highly recommend this podcast to anyone, especially if you liked this book. And vice versa. I was please that this book did not seem like it was modeled exactly from this real life case though, and just had some similarities.jordan.w

This entire series is wonderful. My child was ready to start reading but found the set I used with 'brother' boring so she wouldn't try. These books are colorful and fun. Rules are kept consistent as to not confuse the budding reader and there is a lot of repetition to help reinforce word recall.sunjnky
